  1. Hart is definitely undervalued around here, you'd miss his bat if it was gone. I'd value Hart more if he could put up the same numbers hitting 5th or 6th. I think he lowers his own value by having to bat first or second. His power would look a lot better lower in the lineup where it would result in more runs driven in. I also think he took a big step back last year in terms of speed, defense, and base running. I just wonder how well he is going to age and if his value might be at its peak right now. Melvin missed out on trading guys like McGehee and Turnbow at their peak. I don't want to see the same thing happen with Hart. He's not the outfielder you trade if you have to trade one. The problem is if you trade Gomez or Morgan you aren't going to get anything of substance in return. Gomez can't hit and Morgan is a little on the older side whose clubhouse antics have already lead to trades from two other organizations. You wouldn't get much more than a mid-ceiling prospect for either one. At that point you'd just be trading an outfielder for the sake of trading an outfielder. I don't want to trade Hart just because we have other capable outfielders. But if you can get an Arodys Vizcaino, a Randall Delgado or a Mike Minor, I think you do it.
  2. Has anyone seen "The Son of No One"? I never even heard of it until it came out on DVD last week but it seems cool. I am a big AL Pacino fan (not to mention Katie Holmes is gorgeous). I'll eventually get it at the redbox but what should I be expecting?
  3. And hard not to agree that the Braves would be a logical target if Melvin would totally break character & deal a veteran for a young, cost-controlled player [smile] This would be a really smart move in my opinion. Let's say you can get Delgado for Hart. Stick him in Nashville with Peralta and Rogers this season. One of them would probably be the first or second option (behind Estrada) should one of your starters go down. Then after the season is up you can decline the option on Wolf, opening one spot, and you have more insurance should Marcum and/or Greinke leave, and let's face it, the Brewers won't be able to afford both. As much as I like Jungmann and Bradley, they haven't even pitched in the minors yet and I don't think you can count on them for 2013. A 2013 rotation of Greinke, Gallardo, Narveson, Peralta, and Delgado/Vizcaino would look pretty good and help you get your finances back in order a bit. I really wish Melvin would explore this possibility.
  4. Is Atlanta still looking for outfield help? If so they'd be an ideal trade partner. I count 8 starting pitchers they currently have that could be considered major league ready (Jurrjens, Hanson, Delgado, Minor, Beachy, Teheran, Vizcaino and Hudson). I doubt they get Teheran Hanson or Beachy. Jurrjens and Hudson I don't want. But perhaps Hart for Vizcaino, Minor or Delgado? I think I'd be ok with an Aoki/Gomez option for RF. You could always sign a veteran to be that 6th outfielder and have Schafer and Gindl right there in Nashville. You could stash Vizcaino or Delgado in the minors for a year or Minor (or Narveson) in the bullpen. If Atlanta doesn't want the salary maybe we could pay some of the salary and get them to throw in a low level prospect.
  5. Is it a given that Diekroeger can't play shortstop? Some of the scouting reports I've read suggest he could at least be an average fielding shortstop. I know average fielding isn't exactly what you are looking for in a shortstop but if he can hit like he did his freshman year his value would certainly go up. And I think shortstops are one thing you can't have enough of in the system. Milwaukee has replenished that position a little bit lately but McFarland and Rivera are a LONG ways away and far from sure things. If he falls to #38 do you jump on him?
  6. Don't they only have 5 divisions for basketball?
  7. http://www.wiaawi.org/results/basketballboys/2012/d1bracket.pdf Brackets are out for this year's tournament. I'm not sure how many people follow high school basketball but I am really excited about some of the possible matchups in the state tournament. Germantown, Madison Memorial and Milwaukee King are all undefeated in the state (King lost to a team from Arkansas and Memorial lost to a team from Minnesota). I don't know much about Memorial, but I know Germantown and King have beaten some pretty good teams. I really hope we get to see Germantown play Memorial in the semi's and King in the state finals. I think those three teams stand out a level above the rest of the teams in the state. The only thing that really bothers me is the fact that the regional championship games (i.e. the final round before the state semi-finals. I think that's what they call them) aren't played at bigger locations. They are still played in HS gyms. You'd think that at the very least they could play games in college gyms with much larger seating capacities. The Al Mcguire Center was a great location for the tournament in my opinion. This year that regional is at West Allis Central HS. Is anyone else excited about the tournament? Teams that you follow? Games that you want to see?
  8. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/rankings/top-100-prospects/2012/2612998.html Peralta comes in at #56. Jungmann at #70 and Bradley at #71. I think all three have the potential to make big jumps this season. I am really excited to see these three, plus Thornburg and Mark Rogers, this year.
  9. I don't follow college baseball much and I don't pay much attention to draft prospects until about a month or so before the draft. I was wondering if someone could comment on how likely it is that the following players would fall to the Brewers picks at 27 and 28. Kenny Diekroeger SS Stanford Victor Roache OF Georgia Southern Stephen Piscotty 3B Stanford Michael Wacha RHP Texas AM Trey Williams 3B HS Max Fried LHP HS Just comparing this to the Baseball America top 100 if we can walk away with Diekroeger and Williams/Piscotty I'll be very happy.
  10. Now I don't know a whole lot about the Bucks and I haven't followed this thread at all so I apologize if this has been brought up already. But in my opinion, the Bucks need to blow up the roster and start over. This is the year to do it because the draft should be the strongest in recent years, especially front court wise. Andrew Bogut can't stay healthy. Jennings has already said he wants to play in a bigger market. If I were the Bucks, I would trade them both and try to get additional first round picks in this draft. The team is going nowhere. Their attendance is pathetic. The roster gets turned over so much every year that the casual fan barely recognizes anyone. They need to do something major, especially now that Seattle is looking like they are going to build a brand new arena to get a team back. Trade Jennings and Bogut and whoever else you can and see if you can get some more lottery picks. That's what I would like to see them do. It might even get me to start following the Bucks again.
  11. Peralta doesn't seem to get much respect. He's still pretty young and gets it up there in the mid 90's on a consistent basis. Are his secondary pitches so average that scouts just aren't that impressed with him?
  12. They aren't kids but to expect them to produce like anything other than rookies, when only Gamel could truly be referred to as a one time top prospect, is unrealistic. Schafer would be much more highly looked upon if it weren't for his injuries. His defense is well above average and he has hit at every level he's been in. His OBP was over .400 last year in AAA, his first year at that level. I do think another year would do him well, but I also wouldn't be overly concerned about using him as a platoon player at the major league level if need be. Surely he'd hit at least as good as Gomez does and nobody seems to have a problem with Gomez playing. Schafer's defense isn't as good as Gomez's (whose is?) but it's better than Morgan's from what I hear. I understand the hesitance to play three "rookies" but I also don't like this idea that veterans will automatically be better. Quite honestly there are plenty of players whom I'd be more concerned about playing center field than Logan Schafer and plenty of players I'd be more concerned about playing first base than Mat Gamel.
  13. I've always believed we should look into trading Corey Hart. I think we could get a very good pitching prospect back for him, and it would save a bunch of money. Of course if Braun is suspended 50 games you are kind of stuck.
  14. I'd look into this. Maybe they are still interested in Green. If the Indians signed Kotchman because they don't have faith in LaPorta then no way should we give up Green for him. LaPorta has yet to put up an OBP over .308 despite being given ample opportunity. The only thing I can see him being useful for right now would be a power hitter coming off the bench and part time fill in when your starter needs a day off. There were a lot of people, myself included, who were willing to hand third base to Green this offseason. I'd take my chances that he can put up at least similar major league numbers to LaPorta. Plus if you make that trade and Ramirez gets hurt, who plays third? Cesar Izturis? Jeff Bianchi? No thanks.
  15. BA posted a top 100 prospects list on their website if anyone is interested. http://www.baseballameric...review/2012/2612884.html
  16. I think another thing to consider is that this will likely lead to fewer compensation picks between the first and second rounds, which I think is good. In the 2011 draft the Pirates drafted first then had to wait for the 61st pick to get their second choice. That's absurd. In the 2012 draft, it looks like there will be 30 compensation picks between the first and second round. Teams shouldn't be getting such high picks for losing guys like Rod Barajas, Mark Ellis, or Jose Molina. I like the idea of limiting the number of compensation picks and giving the worse teams a chance to draft sooner. The way I understand the new rule is that all Type A's are now the same. There is no more arbitration. If you want to receive a compensation pick for them, you have to offer them a specific contract, which is something like the average salary of the highest paid 125 players in baseball. So if the rule were in effect this year, the Brewers would have had to offer Hawkins the same one year contract they would offer Fielder to get picks for him. Obviously the Brewers would not offer Hawkins a one year deal worth $10 million, or whatever that average is, so he'd become a free agent without any compensation. Assuming I am understanding this rule correctly, I like it because it saves the comp picks for the best players. Now players like Barajas, Ellis, and Clint Barmes won't be bringing back compensation picks and pushing back the start of the second round. But the really good players like Fielder, Pujols and Reyes will still bring back some compensation.
  17. I don't think there is any way in which he can succeed. I think he has been set up for failure by the organization. He's been up and down for so long but has never really been given a prolonged chance. It's been said that pinch hitting is one of the most difficult things to do in baseball. You sit on the bench all game and then are expected to come in in the 8th inning and face a guy throwing 92-95 miles an hour and then do it all over again the next game. Now when he finally has been given an opportunity there is no room for error. I think he'll be a .250-.270 hitter but that won't be good enough. The first time he goes three games in a row without getting a hit he'll be benched.
  18. Where are we expecting Jungmann and Bradley to start? I hope the Brewers are aggressive with them. Both start out in Wisconsin and if they are pitching well after 5 starts move them up to BC. I thought the Brewers waited way too long to move Thornburg up last season.
  19. The Brewers really need to hit on their top 3 picks this June. Last year's draft got some nice arms and depth in the pitching ranks. Hopefully we can do the same with the bats this year.
  20. Yeah I really, really hope the Brewers veer away from the typical big bodied college pitcher with their picks. I'd love to see a third basemen, a shortstop and a high school pitcher taken with these three picks. Or maybe a catcher. Obviously best player available but I wouldn't mind them seeing them going for a higher ceiling higher risk guy. I have mentioned this before but I haven't been overly impressed with their last couple of drafts, though last year's has a chance to be pretty good.
  21. This is the lineup I'm favoring right now: 1) Morgan/Gomez 2) Gamel 3) Braun 4) Ramirez 5) Weeks 6) Hart 7) Lucroy/Kottaras 8) Gonzalez I know the problems with Gomez leading off, but I don't think its a good idea moving people all over when a lefty pitches. I think Gamel would benefit from hitting in front of the big boys because he'd see better pitches. If Braun is suspended 50 games I'd probably set it like this for those games: 1) Morgan/Gomez 2) Gamel 3) Weeks 4) Ramirez 5) Hart 6) Aoki 7) Lucroy 8) Gozalez
  22. They already have Izturis, though, who is better defensively and can play 2B, SS, and 3B. Touche. I forgot about him. He can't hit for squat but at least we have someone who can play shortstop. Let's just hope he doesn't ever have to be our starter for a prolonged period of time.
  23. If someone like this existed don't you think he would have been signed by now? I'm not describing a perennial all star here, just someone who is ok offensively and can physically play shortstop when Alex Gonzalez needs a day off. Just looking over the remaining free agents I'm talking about someone like Ryan Theriot. He can play short and second and he hit .271 last season. To me that's more important than finding a 5th (6th once Braun gets back) outfielder.
  24. Pat Burrell, Xavier Nady, Marcus Thames, Jonny Gomes, are all still unsigned. Once Braun comes back though you'll be stuck with 6 outfielders (Brau, Hart, Aoki, Gomez, Morgan + whoever you sign). Assuming you go with 12 pitchers and 2 catchers that leaves room for only 5 infielders which probably isn't good enough. The position I'd like to see addressed is backup infielder, preferably an offensive first player who can play shortstop. I'd rather see Taylor Green in AAA than as the 24th or 25th man on the roster playing once a week. Although I suppose we need to get used to that idea since Ramirez and Weeks aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Maybe Green could even spend some time at first base in Nashville in case Gamel doesn't work out.
  25. Wow.....huge deal. You don't see many like this anymore. I'd love to see more prospect for prospect trades.
