  1. My thoughts are: If all the expensive players like Greinke, Hart, Fielder, and Gallardo are going to leave, where are the Brewers going to spend all of their money? Surely they will sign someone other than Marcum. Also, I think you are forgetting a few players. K-Rod should be offered arby this season and he should net two more picks. And Randy Wolf may be a type A (though there are a lot of really good potential free agent pitchers that year) after the 2012 season. This is all assuming that the draft pick compensation stays the same with the new CBA. Quite honestly I'd rather eliminate it completely than to keep it the way it is now.
  2. I'd be more inclined to watch a "poseur playoff game" based on actual season results than a 2nd rate "bowl championship" game pairing based on money. The problem is I don't think the university presidents actually want a playoff. If they did, I imagine they could have one. Most schools realize there is no chance in you know what they'll ever win the BCS championship, so they'd prefer just to go to their stupid little bowl game with a 6-5 record. If you go to a 12 or 16 team playoff, even if you keep the rest of the bowls, they will become even more obsolete then they already are. Plus you'd probably have to cut back on the number of games they play if theres a chance you'd have to play 3 or 4 more to win a playoff. As much as I want to see one, every excuse I've ever heard from a coach or president to avoid a playoff makes me think they have no interest in one.
  3. That's why the Brewers have to play like the Cardinals are going to win the rest of their games. If the Brewers lose Friday's game, the noose will get tighter around their neck for each subsequent game. I think we want the same thing here. But what I DON'T want is the Brewers to enter this home stand with the idea that they only have to win 3 games.
  4. Let's make the playoffs first, then worry about the seeds. If we don't win 3 of the last 6, there is no guarantee we even make the playoffs. I guess what I was getting at was more of a "let's play like we are tied" as opposed to locking up the division then packing it in like Philly has. The Brewers are at home playing two pretty bad teams. There's no reason they shouldn't be able to take care of business on their own. Remember going 3-3 is only required if St. Louis wins their final 7 games, which is a pretty tall task. The Brewers need to be better than 3-3 though.
  5. Nevermind. Sold pretty quickly.
  6. The Brewers really need to play good baseball this week. They are playing two teams they should beat. And even though they are technically 1 game up on Arizona, they are essentially tied because Arizona holds the tiebreaker. That means if Arizona gains one game on Milwaukee Arizona has home field advantage. Short of a historical meltdown, I think the division is all but wrapped up. Let's focus on home field now.
  7. I have two tickets I can't use for Saturday, 9-24-11 vs Florida. Seats are in Section 431 Row 1 seats 11 and 12 (aisle). Face is $21 each I'm just looking for $21 total.
  8. If we had to go with a free agent I'd be ok with Berkman, but are we so against Gamel that we just have to go get a free agent? We'll let McGehee and Bentancourt go out there 5 days a week and suck it up but we won't give Gamel a shot in spring training to win first base?
  9. What is wrong with just regular colors? What's wrong with like.....green. Normal regular green. Why do new teams and teams that redo their logos always have to have to worst, ugliest combinations of colors? And that logo looks like it belongs in the 80's.
  10. He was drafted in the same range as recent draft picks Evan Frederickson, Cody Adams, Seth Lintz, Max Walla, Cam Garfield, and Jimmy Nelson. Those guys show us we should value high quality AAA players over players drafted after round 1. I don't know a lot about Lopez and if he's not a top 5 prospect that's fine, but what do Cody Adams and all the other guys you listed have anything to do with where Lopez fits on our current prospect list? When those guys were drafted our system was better and to be honest some of them were reaches where they were picked. Lopez was considered more of a steal than a reach, and this was in a very deep draft. If you want to argue that we shouldn't be too excited about him because recent second round picks haven't turned out, that's one thing. But I don't see how Lopez's status should be affected by the lack of success of other players. Those guys show us we should value high quality AAA players over players drafted after round 1. I can agree with that but I thought the power 50 was more about ceiling than success in the higher levels. If you emphasize ceiling, Lopez would probably be ranked higher than Fiers. If you emphasize success, it'd be the other way around.
  11. What I did say is that everyone seems to be afraid of the Phils. I say beat who you have to beat and don't worry about who you play. Losing in the NLCS is not significantly different than losing in the NLDS. The goal is not to lose in either. I want the Brewers to win those 11, but I also want the ride to the championship to be as entertaining as it can be. With all due respect pebadger, you just keep saying the same thing over and over again and don't listen to anything the rest of us say.
  12. I just read a little baseball rumor thing on CNNSI that the Royals are going to be looking for two viable starting pitchers in the offseason. Here's a interesting idea. How about Marcum for Odorizzi? I know that's not how the Royals usually work so I guess it depends on how badly they want a good starting pitcher.
  13. Banuelos is going to be a great pitcher Phil Hughes was supposed to be a great pitcher too. Let's just be careful not to overvalue someone who hasn't pitched a major league inning yet. Marcum is an established starter who has experienced a lot of major league success. The biggest issue with him is his contract status.
  14. I think a Catholic Conference is overdue. I wonder though how long Notre Dame is going to remain independent in football. I have to imagine they'll eventually join the Big Ten and the Big Ten will want them to play basketball in the Big Ten. It helps that Nova, Marquette and Georgetown have been playing really well lately and St. Johns is starting to get some good players. If this goes through, you'd have markets in Milwaukee, Chicago, DC, Philly, and New York. I'd have to imagine teams like Xavier (Cincinnati), Dayton and St. Louis would be interested as well because the tv contract would be better. This could work. But they need to be careful not to water it down with too many teams. I think that a conference with MU, Georgetown, Villanova, Depaul, Providence, Seton Hall, Xavier, Dayton, and St Louis would be fine. Other options could include Fordham, Creighton, Holy Cross, and Sienna. But again, don't water down to level of competition for the sake of numbers. I'm not sure Gonzaga fits because their travel costs would be astronomical.
  15. What would you characterize "not wanting to play somebody because they have a better chance to beat you than the other guy" as? I would call it playing the odds. And you're ignoring the home field advantage argument. If we play Philly we do not have the home field advantage. If we play anyone else (as of today), we do. What about this don't you get? Thinking we might not beat someone is not the equivalent of being afraid of them. If I am playing in a one on one basketball tournament where the winner gets a million dollars and I am in the finals, I'm going to hope that that 15 year old girl beats Lebron James in the other semi-final because I feel that I have a better chance of beating her than beating him. I want her to win because I want to win the tournament. That doesn't mean I am "afraid" of having to play Lebron James, it just means I don't think I have a very good chance of winning. If I could see the future and see that I was going to win, then yes I wouldn't care who I played. Dumb example I know but you get the point. If I knew the Brewers would win the World Series, then yes I'd prefer they beat Philly, Arizona and the Yankees. But it doesn't work that way. Instead of picking who we beat, we have to cheer for more favorable match-ups. I get what you're saying. You want them to win and you want them to beat the best teams. We all do. But I'd rather play teams I think we have a better chance of beating because a World Series Championship is a World Series Championship. It doesn't mater who you beat.
  16. I got really bored at work last night and this is what I came up with as my best guess for what the conferences will look like in a few years. Everyone says 4 super conferences and I think there will definitely be 4 big ones but I think there are enough teams left to form a 5th conference, which I tentatively named the Loser Conference: Big Ten: Michigan, Michigan St., Notre Dame, Ohio St, Penn St, Indiana, Maryland, Purdue Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, Nebraska, Texas, Illinois, Northwestern Pac 12: Oregon, Oregon St, Washington, Washington St, Stanford, Cal, USC, UCLA Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, Arizona, ASU, Utah, Colorado, Texas Tech, BYU SEC: Florida, South Carolina, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Georgia, Clemson, West Virginia Auburn, Arkansas, LSU, Alabama, Ole Miss, Miss St, Texas A&M, Va Tech ACC: Virginia, UNC, NC St, Duke, Miami, Wake Forrest, Georgia Tech, FSU BC, Uconn, Pitt, Syracuse, Rutgers, Louisville, Cincinnati, South Florida Loser Conference: Kansas, Kansas St, Iowa St, Boise St, Colorado St, Air Force, Nevada, Wyoming TCU, Baylor, Houston, SMU, Rice, San Diego St, Hawaii, Fresno St
  17. So in your opinion if the Brewers get swept in the first round of playoffs, is that any different than losing the World Series in 7 games? Would the season be evaluated the same either way? They made the playoffs but didn't win the World Series? I guess I view it like this. If the Brewers miss the playoffs, which seems unlikely, the season has to be considered a utter failure. If they lose in the first round, I still consider the season to be somewhat of a failure. They traded away three of their best prospects, including one whose looking like he may be a perennial all star, for this season and to a lesser extent next season. To me a first round loss doesn't cut it, not considering what you have and what you gave away. In 2008 they made the playoffs, and the standard should now be higher. You need to win I would consider advancing to the NLCS, even if they lose, to be somewhat of a successful season. Obviously advancing to the World Series would be a very successful season. But yes, to me it certainly does matter how far they advance when determining how successful to consider the season.
  18. What I don't understand is people actively hoping that the Brewers avoid teams, as if they are afraid. I personally hope they avoid teams because some teams are better than others. Philadelphia is a much better team than Atlanta is. So why wouldn't I prefer them to play Atlanta, particularly when they get to play them at home? I'm not "afraid" of Philly but I'm also not confident they can beat them. Milwaukee's offense is struggling right now and Philly has really good pitching. That's not a good combination. If the Brewers go to the WS by beating the Phils in 5 and then the D-Backs in 6 does the make the D-Backs season any better than the Phils, simply because of the somewhat arbitrary order in which they lost to the Brewers? Yes it does. Because Arizona won a playoff series and Philadelphia did not. To me, that makes it a better season. Just like if the Brewers lose in the NLCS, they would have had a better season than if they lost in the NLDS Once they reach the playoffs all outcomes short of winning the WS are pretty much the same to me. What I want to see is good baseball, win or lose. I guess that's the difference between you and me. I'd pick win first, good baseball a distant second. Every single sport ever invented has been designed around winning. That's why they keep score. If the Brewers win all three first round games because Atlanta commits 16 errors, I'd still rather have that than to lose to Atlanta with five 1 run games.
  19. So Brewers-DBacks wouldn't be possible until the 2nd round. Correct. Unlesss St. Louis passes the Braves. Then we would play either Philly or Arizona in the first round. Right now it seems like all of our possible opponents are hot, except Atlanta. That's why I am really hoping we hold off Arizona and Atlanta hangs on against St. Louis.
  20. I don't understand this thread. Of course we all want the Brewers to win the World Series. But it would likely be a lot easier to accomplish that if you don't have to play Philadelphia in the first round. And it likely be easier to accomplish that if they get home field advantage in both the NLDS and the NLCS. They've played better at home all season long. Their offense is better at home (.789 OPS vs .692 OPS) Their pitching is better at home (3.36 ERA vs 3.94 ERA). Just about everything about Milwaukee is better at home. The entire point of playing these 162 regular season games is not just to get into the playoffs, but to put yourself in the best position to win in the playoffs. That's what we all want. We want them to win, and in order to make it easier to win, we want them to have home field advantage and play the team with the worse record. I don't see that it matters where they lose when they lose. They lost. You can take some consolation in your team playing well, especially if they lose to a great team that is just better than them, but they still lost. If that's the attitude then what difference does it make if they lose in the NLCS or were the worst team in baseball? Either way they didn't win the World Series. If that's your only goal I have a feeling you're going to come away awfully disappointed with this season.
  21. The Big East needs to figure out if they want to be a football conference or a basketball conference. They can't be both because there aren't a lot of teams that would go additions to both, and the basketball side is already swelled about as much as it can be. I actually wouldn't mind a basketball only conference with teams like MU, Depaul, Georgetown, St. Johns, Providence, and Villanova, then maybe add teams like Xavier, Dayton and St Louis. As far as the Big 10 goes, there's a discussion about this on LambeauLeap but the team I'd really like to see them go after is Boston College. It's a great school academically and brings in a huge new TV market. If they go with BC, Notre Dame, Missouri, and Maryland, I'll be satisfied. It would add a of bunch of new markets like DC, KC, and St Louis and all schools are very good academically. Plus BC and Notre Dame would be great additions to Big Ten Hockey. I doubt BC will leave the ACC, especially now that it looks like Pitt and Syracuse may join, but I can dream.
  22. I'm excited to see how the top 5 turns out. I know Peralta will be #1 and Thornburg, Bradley, Jungmann and Lopez will make up the rest of the top 5, but I'm curious about the order.
  23. People are acting like we have been horrible Up until tonight the offense was horrible. Tonight was the first time in 8 games they score more than 3 runs. They need to find some consistency on offense. If they do they'll get back to playing the way they have been because the pitching has been consistently good.
  24. It is good to know that the Brewers will get at least 4 extra early round picks next season. If only K-Rod and Fielder sign with teams whose picks aren't protected.
  25. I think a 1-1 or a 1-2 swap involving Marcum and a pitching prospect would be ideal. I'm kind of in the middle about a trade with the Yankees. It seems to me that Marcum for Nova, Banuelos or Bentaces 1 for 1 would not be enough but asking for 2 of them would be too much. But then again, I really don't know much about them and am looking mostly at minor league numbers.
