  1. Thornburg SHOULD start the year in Huntsville. He has very good all around numbers in BC. Looking at his numbers, I'm surprised his ERA is as high as it is at 3.57. 68 IP. Only 45 hits. Walks are a bit of a concern at 33 but he had 84 K's and only gave up 5 home runs. No reason for him to continue in BC, especially if the Brewers are serious about pushing their starters. Depending on how they perform in the AFL, I wouldn't mind seeing both Jungmann and Bradley start in Wisconsin. Put them on a similar path as Thornburg. If they are dominating at the break, promote them. However, looking at the rosters it pains to see how few impact bats we have left in the system. Next year's draft is going to be as important, if not more so, than last years. We need bats.
  2. They give out 40,000 plus bobbleheads 6 times a year. Those things have to cost more than t-shirts. You'd think they could splurge one night for some cheapo t-shirt with a sponsors logo on the back. Another weird thing about the Brewers "gold" is that they never seemed to settle on a shade. The gold on their jerseys is actual gold looking. But all the memorabilia they sell is more of a bright yellowish type gold. And of course the Cerveceros Jerseys which are mustard yellow.
  3. 2. Keep him, have him be the part of a really solid rotation next year and get two really good picks in the draft I just hate this option. If it always worked out where you'd get a first round pick, it'd be ok. But with what happened with Sabathia and the possibly of a team with a protected pick (Chicago, Baltimore, LAD) signing Fielder and not giving us their first round pick I am not as ok with this scenario as I used to be. I just hope whatever decision is made is not made with the thinking that they'll get two first round picks for him. I also haven't been all that thrilled with Milwaukee's drafts since Jack Z. left.
  4. What they've done with Gamel is an absolute shame. Next year he should at least be given a chance to claim first base. Forget free agency. You have three guys for two positions. Money needs to be spent elsewhere. Green, Gamel, and McGehee can handle first base and third base. The one who isn't starting (hopefully McGehee) should be a backup playing 2-3 times a week either at first or at third.
  5. Wow Latroy Hawkins isn't even a type B huh? How is it possible that Frankie De La Cruz has a higher ranking than him?
  6. Ah...I did not even realize that. Thanks
  7. The Brewers will regret signing Marcum to a long term deal. I would rather trade Marcum than sign him to a long term extension Marcum is just not someone who is going to age well. He has a fastball like Suppan and will have to rely on locating very well. I think it depends on how long you sign him for. I'd be okay with three, maybe four years. Anything longer than that then I'd agree. But his fastball already is like Suppan's and he already has to rely on the change and location. He's been fine up til now. Teams may figure him out sooner or later but you can say that about any pitcher. He has had a sub 4 ERA three years in a row now which is pretty good. That being said, if you get a get a good deal you take it. Nate you mentioned a SS. Do you have anyone specific in mind? Would you trade him straight up for Reuben Tejada?
  8. Paul, that will be us next year if we deal Marcum. We'll be desperate to add a front/middle of the rotation starter, and they're not easy to add (seeing as we've managed to get one every 5-6 years it seems) Well right but unless we re-sign both Marcum and Greinke we'll be in the same boat anyway, just a year later and for longer. If they do resign them like I hope , that's the best case scenario. But if not all you get is picks for him, quite possibly a sandwich pick and a second rounder and I do not like relying on that option. Like I said, if we can get a young top prospect or a combo of two above average prospects then I'd do it. The system, while having a few guys shining, is still very thin. A deal with the Yankees for Montero and Banuelos or Bentaces is the kind of deal I am thinking about. It may be a lot to ask for but the Brewers are in a position where they can ask a lot in return. Maybe a deal with the White Sox revolving around Eduardo Escobar. Or the Mets. If they resign Reyes maybe Reuben Tejada would be available. He seemed to handle SS pretty well and he's not even 22 yet. But ideally you can get a pitcher with #2-#3 upside, which will help Milwaukee in the long run. I'm not necessarily calling for the Brewers to do it, but it wouldn't hurt to look around.
  9. I think we need to find a team that is desperate for pitching and thinks that with it they are a playoff contender. Just like the boat Milwaukee was in last season. Granted he had 2 years left on his contract last off season but Toronto got Brett Lawrie in return. At the time he was a top 30-40 prospect an by now he's probably top 10. I don't know which teams are looking for pitching as much as we were last year but I think if you can get a top 30 prospect who is either major league ready or close to you do it.
  10. The Green guess was debunked by Tom H numerous times, but some just refused to believe him. The thing about Tom H. is that 1) When it comes to minor leaguers, I trust certain people on this board much, much more than I trust any of the JS beat writers. It seems like everything they write or bring up I already know because I read the message boards on this site. And when I read some chat transcripts, I just don't get the feeling that they care (or know) all that much about the minor leagues. And 2) The way I always took his statements was not so much that he was telling us it specifically wasn't Taylor Green. He said it wasn't Green but then he always added something to the extent of it not being a top prospect. Well as others have mentioned, just because you or I think Green is a top prospect doesn't mean Melvin or Ash does. So I guess I didn't know if he actually knew 100% that it wasn't Green or if he was just speculating because it wasn't a "top prospect" and he considered Green to be a top prospect. Also, considering how long it took to call Green up a lot of us kind of got that sense of something bad happening. But in general, I certainly don't take what JS writers say as gospel when it comes to the minor leagues.
  11. I have two tickets to the Thursday game vs Philly that I can't use. They are in section 228 row 2. I checked the Brewers website and you couldn't get two tickets together in the loge outfield anymore. The face on them is $30 each but I'm just trying to get rid of them so I'll take $50 total. I can meet in person any day near Milwaukee. Let me know.
  12. I don't know about you guys but I'm just enjoying the success of the 2011 bobbles.
  13. If the Brewers don't trade Marcum or Wolf I don't see how the Brewers are going to be competitive after 2012 especially if Greinke and Marcum leave through free agency. I think if they resign Greinke and Marcum they'll be fine after 2012, with additional moves of course. Trade Corey Hart (I'm still upset they didn't trade him for Beachy, which was the rumored deal last season). Allow Green and Gamel to be full time players. Hopefully arbitration eligible players Hawkins, K-Rod, Fielder and Saito will bring in at least 4 extra picks which they really need to use on hitting prospects. But Gindl could probably replace Hart in 2013. By the time hopefully Green and Gamel will be every day players. Schafer can replace Morgan (if needed). Shortstop still needs to be addressed long term but other than that you have a pretty regular lineup including Lucroy, Gamel, Weeks, Green, Braun, Morgan/Schafer, and Gindl. Maybe Hart or McGehee could be traded for a SS. The rotation would be ok with Gallardo, Marcum, Greinke then hopefully some combo of Peralta, Fiers, Narveson, Scarpetta and maybe even Rogers.
  14. I'd prefer trading Wolf as well, I'm just not sure you'll get much for him. Don't get me wrong, I'd prefer re-signing Marcum, but I think with the emergence of Peralta and Fiers this season it wouldn't hurt to look around. While Peralta may not match Wolf next season, I think his ceiling is much higher and he needs to get his feet wet in a low pressure situation like the #5 starter because he may need to replace Wolf in 2013 anyway. Or worse yet, he may have to replace Greinke or Marcum.
  15. I wouldn't say it's "super important" to stay ahead of Arizona. We will without a doubt have to play Philadelphia anyway Not necessarily. With the way Arizona is playing they may very well beat Philly. They split the season series 3-3. I think there's a huge difference in getting Atlanta with home field vs having to go to Philly.
  16. If you called up Gamel where would you play? I never meant to imply he should start or get a bunch of playing time. It's super important the Milwaukee stays ahead of Arizona in the standings. I just don't want people to hold it against him if he gets called up and goes 1-7. Until he gets regular playing time for 5-6 weeks I don't think anyone should say he hasn't taken advantage of an opportunity.
  17. Yeah he'll come up and not start at all. He'll get a pinch hit opportunity every 3 games then people will say that he didn't take advantage of the opportunity. It's just amazing to me how little faith the Brewers have shown their minor league prospects the past few years.
  18. So.......can he be a #3? I"d seriously consider making a trade if I were Milwaukee. I think Peralta or Fiers could be an affective #5 next season and would allow them to pitch without the pressure they'd potentially have if they have to come up in 2013 and replace Greinke Marcum and Wolf.
  19. I'd definitely make a play on Reyes. Even with Fielder leaving, Milwaukee has plenty of power. Braun, Weeks, Hart and potentially McGehee and Gamel are 20 home run guys. This lineup needs more balance....more on base guys. A 1-2 of Reyes and Morgan would set up Braun/Weeks/ McGehee/Gamel pretty well. Plus the defense is improved at both SS and 1B which is a big help. And don't forget Wolf is a free agent after next season so we can save money by letting him go. Hart could be traded after 2012 to save money. McGehee could be traded before he gets expensive. Peralta/Thornburg/Fiers could be inserted into the rotation in the next year or two to save money. Even with having to sign Greinke I don't think a Reyes contract would hold us down too much.
  20. I personally like the gold jerseys, but as someone else mentioned I'd prefer them to be less mustard colored and more actual gold....like the gold Marquette uses. For next season I'd ditch one of the two blue alternative jerseys (preferably the one that says "Milwaukee" since I own a replica of the other one http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif and go with one gold alternative and one blue alternative. They can do home/away if they want or just go with four jerseys.
  21. Wow this has got to be one of Melvin's best trades (up there with the Morgan for Cutter Dykstra deal). And the fact we can still (and should assuming the new CBA doesn't change the FA comp) offer him arbitration makes it all that much better.
  22. The move to promote Schafer puzzles me. With both Morgan and Gomez, and probably Hairston, ahead of him in centerfield, he's not going to get any starts. He's missed a ton of at-bats due to injuries over the past few years. I can't see him getting any playing time in the outfield and he'll be buried behind about 4 guys for pinch hitting duties. Why not let him just finish the season in Nashville and make up some of those at bats?
  23. Sorry to interupt the Gindl/Green/Gamel talk but I didn't want to start a brand new thread on this. Can someone comment on Michael Fiers ceiling? He seems to be one of the most underrated prospects, numbers wise, in the system. He's definitely old for still being a minor leaguer and I hear his fastball only tops out in the low 90's, but he's had more K's than IP's in every level he's been at, including now in AAA. Is there any chance he can be a major league starter and if so what does he top out at? Does he have any plus pitches? Can he be a #3 or is that asking too much? With him and Peralta having good showings in Nashville, it may make sense to trade a Wolf or a Narveson after the season to bolster the system a bit and/or save some money.
  24. At the time of the deal Khris Davis was absolutely mashing it in A+. While he's struggled in AA so far I'll still be upset if he's gone. As sad as this is to say, he's still probably the best hitting prospect in the system below Nashville.
  25. I don't see anything wrong with Taylor sitting the first few games and getting used to the atmosphere, etc. Any ideas that he was going to take over for Casey obviously were not based on anything we've seen this year. He'll get his shot. Let's just relax a bit and let the kid relax. Let's windle the magic number down and see how much playing time Taylor gets. People can enjoy the team and still be frustrated with how the lineup is being handled. Milwaukee hasn't won anything yet so we still need to put the best lineup out there. It's not like Taylor Green is some feel good story who we want to see play because he is a 35 year old journeyman who's finally making it to majors after 12 years in the minors. The guy is a good player and he can hit. Nobody is calling for him to be the new every day third basemen. But Roenicke would apparently rather waste his backup catcher as a pinch hitter to lead off an inning than give Green an at bat. Is George Kottaras really that much better of a hitter that he'd risk not having a backup catcher if the game goes into extras as opposed to letting Green hit?
