  1. I'm really totally and completely fine with the approach Stearns took this year to the trade deadline. He was very aggressive, but stopped short of letting real assets go for short term help. The rotation figures to be even better next year, we can use some of our available money to shore up the bullpen during the offseason, and maybe trade for a 2nd baseman (or maybe see what Dubon can do there full time). At this time next year, I'd expect we're going to be in a better position than we were this year and have a better chance at the playoffs. If that's the case, Stearns should still have a lot of trade chips to go out and get us what we need. My only disappointment this deadline was that we didn't get Quintana. I think he would've been worth the price, but even if we did get Quintana there's no guarantee that would've woken up our bats like it did for the Cubs and we could still be in relatively the same position. Next trade deadline and especially the crazy free agency offseason of 2018-2019 should be interesting to see what Stearns/Attanasio do to put this team into contention.
  2. Verlander would retain his right to veto, so if we claimed him and the Tigers wanted to just drop him for nothing, he'd still have to approve it, which I doubt he would do under those circumstances. Kind of a moot point, the Tigers won't let Verlander go for nothing.
  3. Ok so who predicted the three man rotation of Nelson/Suter/Davies for August 1st?
  4. No offense clancyphile, because I did enjoy reading your list, but I wouldn't even know how to begin discussing your list with you.
  5. Might also be interesting to see what they do with Tristan Archer. His stats and consistency seem impressive, but not hearing much buzz about him beyond that, so not sure what his likelihood of being a major league contributor is.
  6. Wilkerson just might end up being one of those guys who we lose due to too much talent in the system. It would suck that we traded for him, he pitched great, and we never really gave him a shot, but something tells me that the upper brass wasn't impressed with his post-trade performance last year, even if it was at CS, and he's very old for AA so maybe not that impressed with his performance there either. As it stands right now, I'd guess that Dubon is pretty close to a lock for a September call up. He could be very useful as a pinch runner, and if we don't do an August trade for someone like Kinsler, he could stand to get some starts at 2B if Villar/Sogard keep struggling. He can take Rivera's spot on the 40-man. Susac/Espino's days on the 40-man are likely numbered as well. With Nottingham needing protection, they won't have 5 catchers on the 40-man, and they'll need a spot for Freddy Peralta too. Swarzak and Sogard will be gone at the end of the year, and Jeffress may not work out either, so there is some more flexibility to protect players if they want to protect someone like Wilkerson, but that will probably have to wait until the offseason.
  7. I see no reason why Brett Phillips couldn't have a long, successful career in Milwaukee. I'd be willing to give Brinson a nice, long leash for the rest of the year, but if Phillips comes up in September and Brinson is still struggling I'd have no problem giving Phillips time out there too. Either one could still yet be the CF of the future for the Brewers, and while I'd place all my money on that being Brinson at this point, that's far from a sure thing. On the other hand, we ARE only 2 1/2 games behind the Cubs, so August is likely to be a month where winning is more important than prospect development. If Stearns/Counsell think that Broxton is ready to come back up and have an impact, then Broxton should be back up and taking time away from Brinson until one of them distinguishes themselves.

Also avoided DSL prospects because I just have no idea.
  9. Zimmerman and Braun are nowhere near the same.
  10. I do think that if Swarzak makes a good impression over the next 2 months, it would make sense to try to resign him. I also think we should be trading for Justin Wilson if the acquisition cost can be mitigated by taking on Ian Kinsler since he will be available next year as well. I know this thread says "2017 bullpen" but I'd appreciate some forward thinking here that we're going to need to seriously improve this bullpen next year and acquiring bullpen pieces now that will be around next year would be much appreciated. Webb was a good start but far from a guarantee, Swarzak is no guarantee to be here next year, it'd be nice to have someone to back up Knebel locked down for next year.
  11. Only way this makes sense would be as a replacement if we trade an outfielder, or if Granderson salary relief is combined with another asset from the Mets (a pitcher). Kinda sounds like something that was brought up in passing and some source thought they'd impress a reporter by saying "hey the Brewers asked about Granderson". Nothing to see here.
  12. I'd honestly be kinda surprised if they weren't DFA'ing Peralta today. His time is up. Bring up Espino and Wang and see what they can do. Espino is certainly a much better option than Peralta for the long man, and Wang can fill in for Blazek for a while.
  13. I think our biggest problem (before getting Swarzak hopefully) was no true 8th inning guy that can be counted on. Hughes and Barnes have both had extended runs of brilliance, but neither is consistent enough to be trusted in close games, and Barnes has shown that games can get away from him in a hurry. Barnes is still young and has a much higher ceiling than what he has done this year, but I do worry that after the failure of Feliz we rushed him along a little too much by making him the set 8th inning guy. Making him the setup man is great if you're rebuilding and want to get him experience for next year, but not so great in a playoff run. Hopefully now that we have Swarzak, some pressure will be taken off Barnes and he can perform a bit better in the 7th inning, and Hughes can go back to being a fireman when we need a double play ball.
  14. Ortiz is a better prospect than Cease by a long shot to be sure, but Jimenez blows Ray out of the water. Good for the Cubs for recognizing an opportunity and going out and getting Quintana. It has made a world of difference and completely swung the momentum of the division. I hope the Brewers don't go out and get Gray at this point, Quintana was the much better option and rumor has it they want Brinson for Gray and that's just madness to me.
  15. Seems pretty obvious Espino is on the way up, but I'd really prefer that they just DFA Peralta and leave Blazek in the pen even if he can't pitch for a few days. Blazek was doing just fine in the bullpen and I hope they don't hold this one horrible start against him too much.
  16. Also, as bad as the umpires have been calling things recently (Shaw's strike 3 was just awful), that Hader pitch was a perfect pitch right at the bottom of the zone and should've been calleda strike and was. If anything, the umpire was being kind to Harper by not throwing him out after THAT pitch.
  17. Brewers are being patient with Scherzer, almost 40 pitches in the first 2 innings. Best chance at a win today would be chasing him after 5 or 6 innings.
  18. People want to act like Hader should've been in there instead of Barnes, but Barnes pitched well enough to get out of that jam last night and got insanely unlucky. He got the weak bunt, he made good pitches and got two weak grounders, and got unlucky in that one bounced a little too high and one found a hole. If there wasn't a runner on 1st base, Aguilar is playing back and gets that bouncer easily. Personally, once Hader was in, I would've either had him pitch to Zimmermann or just walk him and face Murphy, but it's not like Hughes hasn't been very good lately and even when guys are making contact against Hughes it's on the ground which could've limited the damage a bit more.
  19. Assuming we stay with a similar batting order for the rest of the year (which we probably won't but whatever), our #7/#8 hitters are now our back-to-back top prospects. They should be able to regularly turn over the lineup and hopefully kickstart the offense a little. I also think that last night was Hader's coming out party. Embarrassing Harper so badly that he gets tossed from the game has got to be a HUGE confidence boost for the guy, especially in front of a huge crowd of friends and family. I know it's just one batter, but it was the biggest out of the game for the Brewers and he absolutely dominated one of the top 3 best hitters in the game today, if not the best. As for Davies, he has really turned a corner lately and if he keeps getting run support like he has (which is obviously a big if), a 20-win season could actually be possible which would be absolute insanity. I think the Brewers are a Justin Wilson/Ian Kinsler package away from looking like a really solid team. A bullpen of Knebel/Wilson/Swarzak/Barnes/Hader/Hughes/Blazek/Torres looks like a playoff-ready bullpen. Surprised I could muster up this much optimism after last night but there's still a lot to be happy about with this team.
  20. Matt Garza said he only plans on missing one start, so for now I'd bet on him returning to the rotation over Woodruff (who needs to get his pitch count up and his control back before playing in meaningful games down the stretch).
  21. His FIP is 4.21, DRA is 3.81, so that would indicate that he has gotten a little unlucky and maybe defense has hurt his ERA some. I do think moving to a contender would help his motivation. I still think Verlander would be a great pickup, but I also think figuring out a trade for him is going to be super tricky (much like it has been with Braun).
  22. Off the current 40-man, I'd guess that Woodruff, Jungmann, Lopez, Espino, Webb, and Broxton are likely call ups, plus Vogt once he's healthy (which might be before September 1st, in which case Bandy would be the call up). Dubon has to be added this winter so I'd expect he'll get a call up, even if most of his game action ends up being as a pinch runner (plus maybe a spot start or two). Rivera's time on the 40-man should come to an end when they add Dubon, so with the 40-man still at 39 after that swap, I'd give Wei-Chung Wang a shot also. I'd like to see a spot open up for Ivan De Jesus also, as I'd like to see him at least competing for the 2B job next Spring and if we don't add him this year and see what he's got I'm guessing he'll just get signed somewhere else in the offseason. I'd let Archer/Derby come to ST next year as a NRI and see if they can find a spot in the bullpen, but too many arms out there right now ahead of them. Angel Ventura I believe would need to be added to the 40-man this winter so he's another possible add, but not sure I see that happening. Wilkerson should be interesting here too. He's a Stearns pickup, so I'd expect he gets a chance at some point and he's pitched very well this year. Maybe he can take Espino's spot on the 40-man? I'll stop with the commentary but Nick Ramirez, Kyle Wren, and Freddy Peralta are also possibilities. Lots of talent to call up, but nowhere near enough room for them all. Should be an interesting Spring Training next year for the bullpen though.
  23. If Brinson is being traded (which seems unlikely), who would you guys be ok with getting back in the deal? I'd personally want someone with at least 3.5-4.5 years of control who projects to at least be a #2 rotation guy during that time. Basically someone like Fulmer is the only way I'd be happy with trading Brinson at this point. But I'm sure we're all overreacting and he's just headed for Washington, probably will be in the lineup tonight. Honestly, now that we know Swarzak isn't available until tomorrow, it seems possible that Brinson was originally not supposed to start at all and would be called up to replace a reliever for tonight's game. Maybe Cordell's medicals delayed things and they decided to let Brinson go ahead and start, then things got figured out during the rain delay so he was pulled? This scenario only makes sense if they plan on keeping up Phillips too, otherwise they could've just kept Brinson out of the lineup and then sent down Phillips if the Swarzak deal fell through. But with Swarzak, maybe they plan on getting rid of the 8th man in the bullpen for now (but not without him). Anyways, there's one possible scenario that doesn't involve another trade, complicated though it may be.
