  1. You know what the funny thing is? I wouldn't have caught it, anyway.--Moises Alou, 2008. He later said he did not recall saying that. Never looked close to me.
  2. Braun won the MVP when the Brewers clinched a playoff spot. With his numbers (high BA, HR's, RBI's), speed, ability to make a spectacular defensive play, and friendliness to the media, all he needed was to be on a "winner." Don't overthink it, guys like Tom H and Tony W decide who wins, and they don't overthink anything. It won't even be close. Braun will get the most first place votes and won't be below 3rd on a single ballot.
  3. Anyone with a pair of eyes could see Alou was not going to be close to the ball, which Moises admitted years later. And if Bartman doesn't touch it, 2-3 others would have. It was much ado about nothing. The old media just kept running with it, and fans intent on finding a reason for giving up all those runs found it easier to point fingers.
  4. I can't believe TBS cares at all about the few people in WI that may want to watch another event. The ratings on a national scale will not be affected enough to matter.
  5. That's another reason I don't think many respect Gindl enough. Go look at Caleb's numbers...they are nearly identical to Corey's, same levels and ages. I don't care if he is 5-9, he had very good numbers in AAA and is very young for that level. Even if he does not match Hart's production, top 50 in OPS is pretty darn good.
  6. Cheap seats are in LF and RF. They tried starting it both places when we've sat there.
  7. Hart and Weeks would be the best hitters for half the teams in MLB. They are undervalued in MIL because of Prince and Ryan. Years ago, Terry Ryan said the Twins needed a RH, corner OF bat like Hart. They still do. We don't realize how rarely those guys come along.
  8. I'd be shocked if they used Yo the last day. Their priorities will be to set them up for the playoffs, not to win home field, in my opinion.
  9. Yo and Greinke have been the best two pitchers of late, so they'll start the first two. I assume Marcum and Wolf would be next, possibly flipped if they play ATL, with the Game 1 guy going in Game 5. I assume that would be Yo. They may have Yo/Zach pitch a couple innings in the Tues/Wed game. They'll probably talk to them all today and adjust them, based on their preference. This time of year, they can probably all use some extra rest.
  10. The A's did pretty much find players with low BA and above average OBP, because that's what was undervalued then. As Doug said, they pretty much changed the game, and those players simply are unavailable now...Doug would know, he's brought in plenty during his tenure.
  11. Cuddyear isn't much better than McGehee of '09-10, which while solid, isn't very good 1B production. He's also RH and is very pedestrian versus RHP (granted, he destroys LHP).
  12. Aaron Gleeman's mom loved it. I think folks who thin k it's a baseball movie are not seeing how it was presented/promoted. It's a comedy, fish out of water tale.
  13. Yeah, I can't say many would watch a Baylor/UConn "title" game.
  14. Well, if you collect enough rake, you make up all that paid out to folks. I think that was the idea. As I said, when they ran their big Sunday tourney each week, they charged $16 to enter, and usually had about 5K entrants...that's $80K. They had SNG's going nonstop, and others starting every few minutes, so they had cash coming in. Was it as much as investors/pros were getting? Maybe not. But, the way ponzi was used is not correct, at least how we see it.
  15. I like Lee as a platoon half/veteran presence for a young LH 1B. Doumit and Nady are possibilities for that role as well, and have the versatility to play other spots as well. Also, I may be the only one, but I think next year at this time we'll all be talking about what a steal Loney was, probably on a one year, $3M deal. His production away from Dodgers Stadium is astounding, and no one ever mentions it. I see him as a guy a lot like Cameron, who played his entire career in pitcher's parks, and whose numbers could have been 20% higher. An 836 OPS with good defense is plenty solid, and Loney will still be at his peak next season, his year of 28. He also has a career 814 OPS vs. RHP. He's been miscast as an everyday player, and severely hurt by LA's ballpark.
  16. The Phillies have lost 5 in a row since clinching the other night. All teams have bad stretches and good ones. The irony to me is, no one, including the media, seem to be able to figure out why. BOS has a 6 ERA in September, yet the focus in on Carl Crawford and Reddick and Salty the C. Yes, Youkilis is injured, but it's tough to win when you have to score 7. To be honest, much of ATL's and MIL's "struggles" can be directly traced to who they've been playing, SL and PHIL.
  17. Berkman might well get some team to give him 3y/$50-55M, which will seem like pennies compared to the $150M+ Prince and Pujols will get. He may even pitch himself as willing to DH to get some of the big market clubs involved, or he seems like a perfect fit for TEX.
  18. I don't think they're using the proper definition of ponzi scheme, as poker sites make their money from rake. I believe what is being said is they did not have proper reserves, and because of the gov't shutdown, were caught without enough cash on hand. Now, is the reason they did not have the cash is because they were paying owners/founders/red pros a ton of money? Quite possibly. No excuses for that, as Poker Stars paid all Americans back every penny, including me. I have to think at some point, Tilt will say all would have been fine had they been able to continue to function and collect rake.
  19. Your body is not going to like swing shift no matter what you do, it goes against what the body wants. You might want to google it, or look to the military for tips, as the special forces (and everyone to an extent) can't use fatigue as an excuse.
  20. Top one, under .300 OBP is unacceptable. In AAA, especially so. Escobar hit ok in AAA, and he's struggling in his 2nd year. That kid would be lucky to have a Yuni OBP, with no power. Doesn't walk nearly enough either. Second one better, but no speed, walks, or power. PCL .328/.366 is horrible, even Farris did far better. Granted, these guys are young, but if you're talking next year, neither would be any better than Counsell. If nothing else, this exercise shows how tough it is to find a SS.
  21. Anundsen does not have a high ceiling. There are tons of effective A ball SP's that win but do not have the velocity that will be left unprotected, and quite possibly, none will be taken.
  22. With Texas looking around and a couple Big East teams looking to join the ACC, this deserves a bump. Figuring only TV market size, I'd try and add Texas, Missouri, Rutgers/Syracuse, and Notre Dame. Not sure who my next choice is if ND is still thinking they are somehow better than everyone else, I might look toward Maryland and Georgia/Georgia Tech (one was mentioned earlier) to bring in Baltimore, DC, and Atlanta, not sure if I'd leave out the NY schools or Mizzou.
  23. If you follow the game winning RBI stat, a HR hit in the 1st inning of a game in which the lead is never relinquished was a game winner.
  24. Argument with a flight attendant.
