  1. If it's a phone interview, write down what you want to say. Otherwise, be positive and say what you want. Right now, it's nothing for employers to get 75 apps for a single job. 3 interviews and no job offers is nothing. It ain't the late 90's when I'd apply for 8 jobs, get 5 interviews and 3 offers.
  2. I can't believe how people want to throw away $1-2M every year on someone all but certain to be injured. Unless you can get a guy like this on a minor league deal, let the risk takers throw their cash away. Healthy pitchers get hurt enough, never mind injured ones.
  3. Far too much is being made about who broke camp with the team. Sometimes you end up with a reserve like Almonte or Reed due to a variety of factors; injuries, major league time issues, options issues, and so on. You rarely have your best team at the end of March, the goal is to assemble that team in late September. The irony is, they signed Patterson to play LF in AAA, and he likely has Schafer and Gindl in front of him...though I could imagine them wanting to let Logan and Caleb play every day and allow Corey to get 2-4 PA's a week. Corey has a .290/.400ish career line, and I'd probably project Aoki around .330/.370...the difference is negligible. Corey has been in the major leagues for much of the past decade for a reason, he's about 40 OBP points away from being a very solid backup OF, even a passable starter in CF. If he gets 200 PA's, that means he'll get on base 8 fewer times a year...once every three weeks or so. He has warts, that's why he's not a starter, or at least a platoon guy. For AAA depth, he's superb, and he'll likely dominate that level. Pretending a guy who spent last season in TOR/SL is somehow so terrible he shouldn't be a AAA option is just not understanding the game. The difference between a solid AAA player and a normal reserve is opportunity and minute details (a step faster, able to play more than one spot, being a former high draft pick).
  4. Laporta (and Shelley Duncan, another CLE RH 1B/OF) has a reverse split, hits RHP far better than LHP. Laporta also has at least one option left, so CLE can just stash him at AAA and see what happens. Even if he hit both sides equally, it'd make perfect sense.
  5. No, another store manager's job.
  6. I did a decade ago, took about 30 minutes, basically same questions. They asked a couple things tryintg to get me to be critical of my boss.
  7. I'd tell her you're going to be in the area in a week and ask if you could set up a time to interview. This would be a good thing to put in a cover letter.
  8. Patterson is excellent for AAA depth. I'm sure he just wanted to play 5-6 days a week. Probably enjoyed his time with the team in '09.
  9. My hope for LF in AAA is Drew Locke, who is far better known as Danielle Lawrie's boyfriend.
  10. I sprained my foot almost 20 years ago and it hurts if I step wrong or have to stand on a ladder. It'll be as good as it's going to be soon, but it will never be what it was.
  11. http://www.youmail.com/co...eting/bob_uecker_hr_call Loud audio of the 2008 HR on the final day.
  12. Prince spent a decade in the Brewers' system and finally gets to go where he wants to. I'm not sure why anyone is unhappy or upset about it. Those that are, are they also unhappy Aramis signed with the Brewers?
  13. Pitchers often struggle to get loose in cold weather, which in theory causes more injuries. 7 inning games hurt the middle relievers, who are rarely prospects.
  14. Wheeler signed a min or league deal today, so I expect Doug to sign someone similar to a minor league contract with a late March opt-out, for bullpen depth. The top seven are very good, and there's at least a dozen candidates. That said, if 2 of the top 7 go down, that's trouble.
  15. I doubt they'll start any blue chipper at Appleton because of the cold weather. That's just common sensical.
  16. Morgan can't hit LHP and he's a starting CF. LH halves of the platoon get 500 PA's a year, and he's making $2M+ in his first year of arby. I think Schafer has a 50-60% chance to be equal to or better than Morgan, who was a late bloomer.
  17. A good defensive CF who can steal bases and hit for a decent BA will be a starter, without a doubt.
  18. I assume the bar on the club level serves many brands.
  19. It would be very uncomfy for all if a few morons started chanting something, or talk to Ryan about it after he signs stuff. It's a shame, but it only takes a few people to ruin it for everyone.
  20. Protection is mostly myth. Prince had a terrific year with McGehee struggling behind him for most of it. Braun will take more walks and possibly hit for less power, but there has never been a player so good that having a 1.000 OBP hurts the team offensively. That's why the IBB is rarely good strategy, unless the extra run(s) do not matter (already behind 5-3, 8th inning, it makes little difference if you give up a run or three).
  21. With the DH, the risk is minimal. Prince is still very young, and he's not going to forget how to hit. DET will like their deal far longer than the Angels like there's, as Pujols is at least 5 years older, and possibly 7-8.
  22. Never during Moneyball did I think I was watching Pitt and Hill do excellent work.
  23. I used to hire a ton of PT people, and admittedly, did not use letters and resumes, but certainly did not hold it against them.
  24. Decided to get everything ready to send out my cover letter/resume (or take them) to local hotels, and was surprised to read that cover letters for PT jobs are all but unheard of. In fact, sites say you really do not even need a resume, just go in or online and fill out the application. While I was aware this was what happens in the real world, I'm surprised that it's also recommended on employment/writing websites.
  25. In the poker world, this would be similar to losing on a one or two-outer...it can happen, but it is a longshot, so when it does, it's very frustrating.
