  1. Bringing up BA makes any discussion all but worthless to me. Pena made $10M this year, and was worth it, though he can't hit LH's at all. I get the feeling some here are still living in 2004 as to contracts and values. Most players get more than they should and more years than I am comfortable with. That's why developing your own players is so vital.
  2. Is an 800 OPS better than what you'd expect from a Green/RH 3B platoon? Headley will cost about $15M over the next 3 seasons, and Green will make minimum. I don't dislike Chase by any means, but he'd eat up a lot of the money available.
  3. He can't play SS every day, his metrics are awful.
  4. Lowrie has declining defense, higher than average injury risk, extreme splits (excellent vs LHP), and an expected decline once he leaves Fenway...and he's still above average at SS. There sure is money to be made at C and SS if you can hit at all. I added him at Misfit Toys, just above Hairston.
  5. DLC will only be back if he is kept on the 40 man this offseason, and remains up, as I assume he is option-less. He'd be a very popular minor league FA, might even garner a 40 man spot. Led the PCL in ERA, throws hard. Need about a dozen guys in the mix, and you need several to have options. Kintzler, Braddock, and McClendon do, so they'll be nice to utilize.
  6. Barmes has value, but he's a SS in his 30's with a career OBP of about .300 despite playing in plus hitters' parks his entire career. I'd hate to go more than a year or two, and that seems unlikely in this environment.
  7. Cuddyer isn't very good versus RHP. For $8-10M, that's a big flaw.
  8. In answer to the question from May, the Reds needed a 40 man spot, so they took him off the 40 and sent him to AAA. Because he had to clear waivers, he was exposed to the Crew. Odd that Narveson and Stetter both had hip issues. Must be the same reason LHP's cannot throw a ball straight.
  9. Axford would interest every team in MLB, as he's so cheap for two more years, he could easily be a set-up guy. Unless another cheap closer fell into their laps, it seems very unlikely they'd even consider dealing a healthy, effective Axford.
  10. NRI's are handed out like condoms to hookers. They aren't a sign of worth, but rather a simple way to get a minor league FA to come back and play at AAA.
  11. He was hurt last year, but both he and Loney will improve just by getting out of pitcher's parks. Both are plus fielders as well.
  12. Run scoring and run prevention are each half the game, so pitching plus defense equals 50%, meaning at most, defense is 10-15% of the game. SL has two terrible defensive OF's, range-wise at least, and the "good one" throws like Juan Pierre. The funny thing is, the Brewers are in the upper half of both UZR and DRS, yet many insist they are terrible...because they see it with their own eyes. That's the exact same argument they used in favor of metrics a few years ago, because they claimed the eye/scouting was biased. An e-mailer told me the other day the Brewers were actual best in the majors at DE in the 2nd half of the season. I think DE is a junk stat myself, as it seems to correlate nearly 100% with LD%, but some use it. Most every team in MLB, save the Rays, are within a couple wins of average defense. Add up all the above, I'd continue to build with pitching and offense, and focus on making the routine plays and hitting the cutoff man.
  13. If you don't like Carroll, you don't respect OBP, or not getting out. He's not going to be effective playing 155 games, but he can, and has been effective playing 120. He can also play any of the 2B/SS/3B spots. There's a reason Doug wanted him at the deadline, he's versatile, has OBP skills, and is a decent fielder. There were 31 players who had 350 or more PA's at SS last year, Carroll's OBP would rank 5th, and his OPS would be 16th. I'll take that at every spot I'm unsure of, to say the least. Some sort of Carroll/Hairston combo platter at SS would be more than fine with me. Scutaro and Furcal both project better than Rollins, and nearly as good as Reyes. I would not want them on a 3-4 year deal, but on a 1-2 year deal, they're very solid options.
  14. His OBP is about the same from each side, but his SLG is better from the left side. Still, he would have his uses, especially as a utility type player. They might even want to carry another C, and use him like they did Kotsay.
  15. Players improve defensively, especially with repetition and time. If you can't hit, you can't hit. The list of former players who topped at in A ball, or college, or AA that could not hit is a mighty long one. Lots of them could play a position just fine. Didn't matter, they couldn't hit. A guy like Scooter has always been the best player on his team, and was able to play 2B or SS plenty adequately just with natural ability. Now, he'll learn, and get better. That's what the minors are for.
  16. Scooter can hit. The silly things holding him back that they pick on him for, defense and baserunning, are things he'll get better at as he works his way to the bigs. As is, the kid can flat out hit, and for a middle infielder, take a gander at the bats you currently see...plenty of .270/.330 types. I still wish they'd let him play SS a couple times a week.
  17. Gindl's minor league stats almost mirror Hart's, and Doug even said he's not sure why Gindl gets overlooked. I know he's 5-9...that may make him a bit more injury prone, or limit his power a bit, but he'd probably be 3rd or 4th if he were 6-2, 195. He might well be penciled in to RF as early as 2013, or at least a platoon spot.
  18. No one knows if he'll get it, but many say Prince is hoping for 8y/$200M. Reyes will not be anywhere near those numbers, in years or money.
  19. There are maybe a dozen SS's that fit that description, and they are either unavailable or making $8M+ a season.
  20. Maybe he just missed an A, he surely knows that.
  21. I would certainly have Scooter higher than Green, and gindl a bit higher, but overall I agree with most.
  22. Where I'm from, $10K is a mighty expensive ring.
  23. Counsell turned down starting jobs to stay in MIL as a utility guy a couple times. Would Jerry rather get 500 PA's and make $4M or get 350 PA's and make $3M. Most guys would not choose the latter, so if the Crew doesn't want him as a starter, he may well go elsewhere, even if it's SEA or BAL. No player would ever say it, but many prefer the laid back atmosphere of a 70 win team, especially compared to the panic and negative fans in BOS or PHIL. Time will tell.
  24. Hairston compares well to all but the top 4 FA SS's available this offseason. He'd probably need a solid reserve, as 110-120 games might be his ceiling of effectiveness, but I think he'll get pretty good money, $3M+ per. Since he can play 2B/SS/3B, and the OF, he'll have a lot of demand, as over half the teams will think he's a solid option at one position or another. http://mlbmisfittoys.blog...ted-production-jose.html
