  1. I doubt Gamel will sit on the bench, he'll play somewhere most every day. A cheap LH bat off the bench is pretty easy to find.
  2. The texting law is meaningless, as pointed out, there is already a law in place for inattentive driving. Also, can't you delete texts as soon as they are made? Are we going to have CSI techs working to find them? Law makers need to concentrate on the big picture, not nitpick like this. It's movie of the week legislating, and it is pathetic. WI doesn't bother having a real penaty for DWI 1st offense, and it isn't until 4th offense DWI that it is more than a slap on the wrist.
  3. Marcum has 2 years before he's a FA, and TOR needs a 1B, and is looking to trade for Greinke. They are my top pick, other than TEX...and that depends on Lee.
  4. Lawrie was in AA at 20. Braun was still in college. Age versus level is probably the most thing to remember when looking at minor league stats. Cain is about the same age as Gomez, for example, and Bill James sees that, and projects them almost the same.
  5. He gets 400 PA's a year and makes $2.5M...he's at least a platoon guy, and he has an 800+ OPS. He'll get plenty of AB's, but since he's an awful fielder, has limited openings each season. He's kind of like Jim Thome now, as opposed to Thome 5 years ago. If I were an AL GM, I'd find my DH annually just by waiting and sifting through the chaff. Worst case scenario, you end up platooning a Gabe Gross type with a RH hitter until the deadline...heck, you'd still get 90% of the average DH production for a couple mil. DH is not a place to give a long-term commitment, as guys enter the DH fray every year, due to injury, age, and the simple loss of fielding skills.
  6. It's actually for 1.5 years of Grienke, unless you're willing to take a couple picks for him. I'm not sure if the Royals would feel any two pitchers in the system are what they are looking for, as I doubt if they really like Jake, who is probably 3 years away. 2 of Peralta, Rivas, and Jeffress, packaged with Cain, might be a place to begin. No way I would include Lawrie, as he's outperforming Braun in the minors, and he's very young for his level.
  7. No proven starting type player is going to come to MIL to sit behind Hart and Braun...that's a promise of 150 AB's, unless there's an injury. That's why Hinske was so nice, he's at the point where he'll take $1.5M to mostly sit. Cust won't, and eventually, he'll find at least a platoon gig.
  8. We have a warning of some kind and are only projected for 1-3".
  9. The thought of rent free living intrigues me enough to put up with quite a bit. I think you can check on that somewhere, like the clerk of court, as renters have many rights. Ask around.
  10. DLR was given $10M per based pretty much on short-term success and great LH stuff that has never led to good numbers...but he has the stuff.
  11. If they are going to trade Prince or Rickie, they may be looking to clear spots on the 40 man. It's at 35 now, but when Counsell (hopefully) and a couple more return, and then maybe a Rule 5 pick, it's darn near full again.
  12. Unless they see Loewen as some sort of mop-up man/reserve OF, I don't see him being traded for or a Rule 5 pick, as he's already not young and just learning to be a position player. However, if he would be willing and able to pitch the 7th, 8th, and 9th if the Crew was down 8-1 or 12-5, suddenly, a reserve OF that can save the bullpen is far more valuable than your average bench player.
  13. CV was awful after the first 40 games or so. He is still the same pitcher he was the day they brought him up, he has not matured at all. He has a plus curveball, plus change, and his fastball averages 91-92...he's got the stuff. He's just never developed into anything more than a decent middle reliever. Macha rewarded guys who pitched well with the higher leverage innings. CV never earned them.
  14. Here would the top 4 guys, if indeed it is a Rule 5 eligible, which Adam M also reported. My guess would be Frank Gailey, check out how similar to Braddock he is. http://albethke.blogspot....nandez-frank-gailey.html All 3 pitchers have more ceiling than CV, though I bet TOR thinks he can be a #4/5 SP. Looking at his stats, I'd agree, but he sure has sucked as a SP. If he'd use his fastball as anything except a waste pitch/down 2-0 pitch, he might still be. For $1.5-2M, I think the Blue Jays like his potential as an SP.
  15. I think you meant your army of little people, Nottso. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif I worked 70 hours a week for 3 years, and went to school while doing so a couple semesters. That was when I was 23-25. Now, sometimes I nod off playing poker online, only to be awakened when the time warning goes off. Heck, some days I get up and immediately try and find a spare hour or two when i can nap.
  16. He just was not suited for the media in NY, according to most. In MIL, with Tony and Tom asking the "tough" questions, I think he'd be fine.
  17. I would say he might well end up a #2 or #3, as he had success in AAA as a 22 year-old. He's got 4-6 seasons before he hits his mythical peak. He's not just one of the best pitchers available, he's one of the youngest. I'd look to trade up with the first team drafting, and offer them a decent guy like CV, or a solid prospect, maybe anyone out of the top 5. I think he can easily be hidden as the 12th man on the staff, even if he is not quite ready.
  18. Harden has been both ineffective and injury-prone. He would be cheaper, but that's because he last was good in 2008 and last threw 150 innings in...2004. Bedard has been solid when healthy, but did not throw a pitch last year, and has not pitched 84 or more frames since 2007. Webb has pitched one game since 2008. Any money you give any of those three is very likely to be 100% wasted...not get a single thing out of it. While they all will likely sign for one season, they are all likely to be complete wastes of $4M, 5M, or 7M, whatever they get. Sheets got $10M last season for example, but did pitch somewhat decently, though not for the whole season. Those guys are good risks for the Mets, Red Sox, Angels, or any team that gets big market TV money. If they miss on $5M, they write it off as a gamble worth taking. For doug, it's a huge chunk of his payroll.
  19. The teams losing those other 1B may be bidders as well. I don't really think it's a positive to have 3 rather than 1, but I suppose there's always room for a different outlook. As for the original post, Prince is looking to break the bank ASAP. Guaranteeing him a single year for less than he'll get in free agency (barring injury or his production falling off a cliff) is not even make him consider it. If you offered him 2012 only and $30M for it, that he might think about, but probably not sign.
  20. No doubt he improves the staff for '11, and probably '12, though as with all SP's, he's one pitch away from surgery, perhaps moreso because of his age. As with all long-term deals, there is risk. The irony I see is, many suggest Doug "has to take a risk" because no FA SP will come to MIL, but whether it's giving a guy like Pavano an extra year, DLR too much money (like most would say COL did), or signing a guy like Webb or a similar SP coming off an injury (who may be undervalued if he returns to health, or overpaid if he does not), no one wants to say this particular risk is probably the best one. Doug only gets to make one choice, and to be honest, all you can do is play the odds. Using poker terms, some times your opponent goes all-in with a gutshot straight draw, you make the proper call, but that 6 that comes on the river still makes you a loser. Whether or not Pavano is a key component to being a contender, or a guy who eats up payroll to keep from getting the key component is an unknown, and even if you play the percentages properly, you could easily end up being incorrect. This is the life of a small market GM. Theo can afford to miss on a $10M guy annually. Cashman can miss on a couple. Doug cannot.
  21. I would agree with Colby's ceiling, and to me, 175 innings far outweighs 70, though some would argue about how important those innings are when you're pitching the 7th and 8th, I suppose. Rodriguez is also 2-3 years younger, if memory serves. That alone puts him higher on my mythical list.
  22. He's a good defender, and does have power. As a stopgap, you could do worse.
  23. Pelzer looks to have a far lower ceiling than Rodriguez. Wynn was mentioned in most every Rule 5 preview though, so he'll be grabbed.
  24. I had him as my #1 guy last week as well, though I only looked at pitchers.
  25. I'll watch it on Netflix. He is one of my favorites, truly intelligent humor. He's the opposite of Leslie Nielsen/Zucker bothers, but funny is funny.
