I was at the game tonight. I couldn't believe the lineup when I saw it. Counsell is getting lots of blame. I can see both sides of that. His lineup wasn't good. I mean someone under 200 batting cleanup??? Keeping your hottest hitter out of the lineup??? I have been a season seat holder in the past. I think 14 of the last 15 years I had some sort of season seat holder package. I didn't get one this year because I didn't think the Brewers did enough in the off season (and this is not on Counsell). They struggled to score last year and how did they fix it? Not by signing a big bat but rather by signing a couple of over the hill guys and hoping they could get the magic back.
The most frustrating thing about all of this is we have one of the best pitching staffs in all of baseball and we are wasting it because we can't hit when we need a basehit. Counsell doesn't do the hitting but he can put people in the lineup who are our best hitters.
What I predicted at the beginning of the year was going to happen is indeed happening. The Brewers are going to be enough in the race to keep it close and keep people interested but they will falter down the stretch because of an overused bullpen and an anemic offense.
What a waste of a manager who could do wonderful things if ownership would pay for one or two better than mediocre hitters.
Other than two games - 14-1 and 12-1 the offense has made very few games easy for the pitching staff. The mark of a good team is that sometimes the pitching carries it, sometimes the defense carries it, and sometimes the offense carries it. Other than the two games I referenced above, when has the offense carried this team?
I'm frustrated but I shouldn't be because I saw it coming and I did not have high expectations.
