  1. Good stuff, even though the bold part made me cringe a bit... Ha! Yet Melvin is easily a top 2 GM all time for the Brewers franchise. Right now anyway, DS looking like he should surpass him. And yeah that's not saying much about the other GMs.
  2. Per Rosenthal: Sources: #Orioles close to agreement with free-agent RHP Alex Cobb. Expected to be at least three years. Sides had been talking about deal in range of three years, $50M. Possibility of deal first mentioned by @JeffPassan. Frankly, I'll be impressed if those numbers are accurate. Good for Cobb for sticking to his guns if he gets that deal. Not sad at all the Brewers skipped on that.
  3. I don't see a lot of panic from the Packers about their defensive backfield. If the Packers were panicking they would have absolutely overpaid for some of the guys that went elsewhere for not a lot of money. They would have stepped up and brought Burnett back. They have a plan, I'll wait a while longer before I get really concerned. I am concerned, but I have to believe that BG is not an idiot.
  4. Maybe he's willing to wait until after the draft so that a team that signs him doesn't lose a draft pick/slot money. Didn't Kendrys Morales do that a couple seasons ago? Looked it up, the draft in 2014 ended on June 7th and Morales signed a 1 year deal with the Twins on June 8th. Not sure this strategy would be smart for Cobb since he would miss out on 2+ months of whatever salary he signs for. I'd just sign a one year offer to start the season unless he's really being low balled. I gotta think he's being offered money similar to Lynn at least.
  5. I honestly don't see a bad stretch like that happening again unless something drastic changes. This team went 25 seasons between playoff appearances. A lot of that had to do with the Selig ownership group. They did not have a winning mindset, after 1992 all they ever did was make excuses about why they couldn't spend money to compete. Some of the excuses were based in truth, but they showed almost zero ability to think outside the box to try to piece together competitive teams. With the way MLB is structured today with revenue sharing and with the current ownership group that kind of ineptitude should be easier to avoid. It's still difficult for Milwaukee to field consistent winners year after year after year but the dips into losing shouldn't be as long and terrible.
  6. Rick and Morty - lives up to the hype. Smart, crude, irreverent, hilarious. Westworld - season 1 - early episodes do a lot of world-building and set-up, so it may feel slow but the payoff in the last few episodes make it so worth it. Also, Anthony Hopkins, need I say more? - Season 2 coming in late April, can't wait! Game of Thrones - duh LOST - recently re-watched this, remembered it being really good but re-watching it was even better than I expected. I think binge watching improved the experience. It had been long enough for me to forget a lot of how things went down the first time I watched it. Great, great show. The Good Place - Few episodes in and liking it. Same dude that wrote for The Office and that was writing and in charge of Parks & Rec is running this show. The Magicians - Angsty grad-school aged millennials in the real world that can do magic. A grown up, harsher Harry Potter type show. With sex, alcohol and drugs (college kids doing college kid things) and a cable network (SYFY) that doesn't mind using uncensored F-bombs. Really. Fun show if you like that kind of thing.
  7. A Win a dang 'ship. The franchise nearing 50 years without one is too long already. I'm an 80s kid, I've already weathered a longer drought than a measly 9 seasons, all without having a WS title in the pocket to look back fondly upon. I would argue that since MA became the new owner in 2005 following this franchise has been fun. Don't need playoffs to have fun being a fan. Building the team up, peaking in 2011, having a couple seasons of getting off to good starts but falling off at the end and missing the playoffs. It's been eventful. I've enjoyed it. B is tempting though. Maybe try asking some Buffalo Bills fans which outcome they'd take.
  8. [insert Price is Right Fail Horn Here]
  9. It might be the first time a legit source said the Brewers had interest. But you're right, it could be Heyman just connecting the same tired dots we have here for months. Hmmm, I thought Heyman had reported the Brewers as in on Cobb before. There was a report back on Dec 31 on MLB.com, I believe from Jon Morosi, that the Brewers had been "in contact" with Cobb's representatives. I remember searching in the last week or so for something more concrete than rumor tying Cobb and the Brewers together and that was the only mention by a reputable source and it never really said that negotiations were occurring, just that there had been contact.
  10. Saw that. I also thought it was interesting to read that the punt return for a TD he had against Cincy in his rookie year, probably his most memorable play as a Packer, was the only TD he ever scored on a punt return in his career.
  11. Wolf probably started that due in no small part because he got burned by 5' 10" Terrell Buckley with the 5th overall pick in 1992.
  12. Packers traditionally have gone for taller DBs, are they going to be cool with a 5' 9" guy? If Pettine feels he can play in his defense that's good enough for me, I just wonder if they shy away from him because of size.
  13. They obviously think that Cain is going to age well, otherwise they wouldn't have given him a 5 year deal. If they're not willing to talk to Lynn, who wouldn't be leaving his division, and signed a 1 year deal, they clearly think he's going to play well throughout his contract. The front office has a clear, concise plan, and I feel that is comforting. None of us know what that is, because we each all know what we want, but they know much better since they see everything first hand. Whether it's you want Santana or Broxton traded, or Cobb signed, Stearns already has his dominoes laid I feel. Right, but I think he changed his domino pattern right around the time the Archer trade talks ended. It's possible (likely?) he decided to wait and see how the season goes and make moves for starting pitching as the season progresses (and if the team is contending) rather than do it up front. Thus, no Lance Lynn, no Alex Cobb, no Lucroy, no Walker. I still like the Cain signing while at the same time understanding why others feel it may not have been the best thing for the team as it's currently constructed. Time will tell if it works out or not.
  14. I think that's a valid opinion about Cain. I also think that the crazy market may have fooled Stearns into thinking he really could swing a trade for Archer or another upgraded starter. Clearly he thought he could trade Santana and part of me is still in disbelief that he couldn't.
  15. In the deep, dark recesses of my brain the thought has blossomed that Stearns and the FO are not overly concerned about the wildcard/playoffs this season. I feel like last year was a pleasant surprise and they're trying to build on that, but they're not necessarily going all out for it yet either. The Cain and Yelich additions look like win now moves but even if they miss the playoffs this year those guys will still be around for several more years. I think next year is the year they're really going to push for it. This year is a wait and see and hope to catch lightning in a bottle... again. This is only my opinion and it's only one possibility that's bounced around in my slightly crazy attic of a mind. It does not mean that that's what I think they SHOULD do. I have no real basis for this other than the fact they have NOT signed one of the big free agent starters. In a year where not only does it make sense for them to sign one, but the big markets are generally staying away, which only heightens their chances of actually getting one of them to agree to come to Milwaukee and at a price that fits their market.
  16. I don't really have strong feelings about where he goes. I just don't think it will be Milwaukee.
  17. My feeling is he gets around 3 years $39 million. With Lynn getting $12 million and Chatwood's 3 year deal coming in a little over $12.5 million per year, $13 million per year for Cobb seems about right. Unless he can get a couple clubs to engage in a minor bidding war, him being the last guy standing.
  18. Cobb just needs to sign, so we can finally end this thread and move to Major league forum. Which is really what my original post was about. Lol. Didn't mean to start a whole new bout of rumor speculation, just trying to gauge how long others here felt it would take Cobb to sign somewhere now that he's the last man standing (of the significant FAs). Some industry people were saying players should sign by Friday of last week if they wanted to be ready by opening day, Lynn trickled in on Saturday and Arrieta on Sunday. It's now Tuesday and Cobb is still out there. I half expected him to sign somewhere yesterday. Leading me to wonder if he's juggling two or more teams in negotiations right now. Maybe this works out for him.
  19. I was looking at his Lynn prediction, it would have held more water with me if it was closer to when Lynn actually signed instead of a couple weeks before.
  20. So with Cobb generally considered the last big FA remaining, does the longer he go unsigned signify he's getting multiple offers or is he just wishing really hard he's going to get the money he wanted? Once Arrieta's decision got made I thought Cobb would get signed fairly quickly so even this couple of days feels like a long time for him to be still out there.
  21. Rosiak tweet: Stephen Vogt is scheduled to see the doctor regarding his throwing shoulder later this morning. He said yesterday wasn’t a setback, per se. “I’m going in the right direction but I’m just not there yet.” Maybe he gets back on the field healthy enough to be cut for performance based reasons...
  22. Sogard is a giant overpay and I can't really figure out why they signed him immediately after the season ended. He's a replacement player, nickel a dozen.
  23. Got it. Welp, I had tweeted Tom for an explaination now I'll say none needed lol.
  24. This is take from yesterday's article in the JS. https://www.jsonline.com/story/sports/mlb/brewers/2018/03/12/stephen-vogts-comeback-attempt-suffers-setback/412158002/ "Vogt signed a one-year, non-guaranteed contract with the Brewers on Dec. 1 for $3.065 million. He could be released before opening day with the Brewers responsible for paying one-quarter of his salary, but only if the decision was performance-based, an issue that likely would need to be determined by Major League Baseball." To me this means the injury means he will be paid. Haudricourt posted this on Twitter "#Brewers have two weeks to figure out Vogt situation. Players without guaranteed deals can be released and get paid one-fourth of salary. Injured players can be released as long as not performance based." So this says NOT performance based. Rosiak and Haudricourt need to get on the same page.
