  1. Vogt had a setback today and is scheduled to get an MRI on his shoulder.
  2. Why do you think it’s a joke? I mean it sucks to see them get more picks (they have something like 4 picks inside the top 90 with their own picks and picks for Davis/Arrieta) but the compensation for losing a FA has been a thing for a long time in various forms. I think its strange to get an incentive to buy a FA and not keep your own. The comp picks in NFL make sense. You lose guys and dont sign guys you get comp picks. Getting a pick for Davis and Arrieta I see no issue with. Getting Darvish instead of Arrieta and still getting a pick is strange. It's a pretty clear reward and a reason to go after Darvish over Arrieta. Got it. That makes sense. They probably should change the rules they don’t lose nor gain a pick in a scenario like this. Don’t lose one for signing Darvish and don’t gain one for losing Arrieta. They’d probably have to go back to the old way of A/B level FA the league determined or allow guys traded at mid season to either be Q0’d or still cost a pick

  4. Probably? Could see 3-4 years at $13-16 aav being what it takes. I’d be shocked if he takes or the best offer is a Lynn deal. Us, Orioles, Padres, Cardinals, Nats, Red Sox I think all still could be in and maybe a “mystery team” like Mariners, Angels or Rangers.
  5. That's fine but I'm expecting a 76 to 82 win season then
  6. To take the payroll to $125-130m? With significant arbitration raises (Shaw, Nelson, Davies, Knebel, Santana) as well as some upcoming salary increases like Yelich. $125m is probably doable in and of itself, but leaves the Brewers walking a rightrope, with no flexibility whatosever, and likely being forced to non-tender/trade players they'd really like to keep. If Cobb can be had for Lynn-like AAV, something like $12m-15m then that's probably doable assuming Attanasio is willing to go to $120m+, but I'm honestly still not sure Stearns would go for that. Fair enough. I hate to keep repeating myself and I’ll stop. But again, if this is the concern then signing Cain was even dumber than I originally thought. Easily could’ve fit Arrieta and Cobb in without signing him.
  7. Compare what Lynn and Arrietta do this year and I bet it's not 37 million better than our 4/5. I don't think the back end of our rotation will be that bad. That's 1/3 of our payroll and your really only getting the difference between them and our 4/5 Arrieta isn’t a 4/5. He’s projected to be 1+ win better than any starting pitcher on our roster.
  8. You think that our current roster doesn't even put us in ballpark of contention? Could easily see us 5+ back of WC at deadline and it being “don’t want to go all in” on a guy like Archer or Stroman or whatever and wait for the offseason. Just seems like we totally half-assed this offseason with what these pitchers are going for. Could’ve added 2 of Lynn, Cobba and Arrieta.
  9. The SP market isn't all that spectacular next offseason, Kershaw is the only guy and really it's probably back to the Dodgers or Yankees huge payday. Keuchel is the next best guy I'd guess and he can barley get by 140 innings the last 2 years and will be 31 or 32. Let's go get Cobb at $15-20 million this year and hope he thinks he can prove it for a bigger deal next year and call it an offseason.
  10. It’s not about comparing players. It’s about allocating Capital properly, or at least more efficiently, and looking at opportunity cost. 1 of Dyson/Jackson/Gomez+ 1 of Lucroy/Avila+Walker+1 of Chatwood/Cobb>Cain. Let alone passing up Cain and any FA all together and just going to what was needed to get Darvish.
  11. Cain seems to be a pretty bad deal at this point. The OF was mostly fine but even if they wanted to add an OF Dyson, Jackson, Jay, etc on one year deals could have given us just as much this year when platooned right and not committed big, long term, money to a 32 year old who depends on athleticism to be good. Could’ve had 1 of Dyson/Gomez/Jackson/Jay, Lucroy or Avila, Walker and Chatwood or likely Cobb for what we gave Cain and for way less years
  12. If it's for 1 year you're going to have to pay a high number but you avoid the long-term commitment. $20-30 million just this year isn't going to kill anything with the team to help stabilize the rotation.
  13. I don't like Lynn much at all but I'd be open to a 1+1 deal for him. 1/20 guaranteed with a team option for like $15 million in 2019 and a $3-5 million buyout. Similarly I'd like to go the same route with Cobb or Arrieta. Go like 1/25 guaranteed for Cobb and 1/30 guaranteed for Arrieta with the option year being about $15-20 million with $5 million buyout
  14. He was kinda like their Sogard last year. He put up a good slash line but it required like a .360+BABIP. Don’t blame them for preferring to play Happ/Almora/Schwarber over him but agree they could miss him. Always was a thorn in our side
  15. Are their numbers better with him catching them than vs him not catching them when they are on the team? The Yadi makes pitchers great thing is such a load of BS to me. It also seems like the pitchers that leave are hitting the backside of the aging/performance curve and they don’t seem to have a lot of under 30 year old pitchers ever hit FA. I don’t think most of their FA leaving and sucking is because they left precious Yadi, it’s because they got old and/or hurt.
  16. Going to be 31, had TJ lately, stuff was never great, FIP/xFIP in the high 4s last year, velo down from “peak years,” always walked guys at a higherish rate, HR rate exploded last year, he is/was looking for one of those 3/4 year deals for $15-20 mil+ a year, former Cardinal pitcher, gotta give up a pick. Just no thanks.
  17. Could’ve just signed Sogard to a minor league deal for backup SS worries. Doubt he would’ve got a major league deal this offseason or else find some AAAA filler that’s always out there willing to be the backup SS on a minor league deal
  18. It’s Monday Morning Quarterbacking but man we probably could’ve got Cobb, Walker, Lucroy and a Austin Jackson, Jarrod Dyson, etc type as a 4/5 OF if we felt we wanted one instead of signing Cain, Sogard and Vogt for around the same money. The latter gives us a better team than the former and it isn’t all that close, IMO.
  19. I agree this is probably what I’d do if no pitcher is added, though I’d like to add one. Miley/Guerra 4/5 rotation spots, Suter in pen and Woodruff in AAA to stay stretched out. I’d also try and sneak a Gallardo on in the pen in favor of Drake.
  20. It’s fully guaranteed. He gets $150K for 30, 50, 70 and 90 games played as well. So he’ll likely cost $3 million by years end
  21. This would worry me if it’s the case with Cain being 32 already and Braun to a lesser degree being on the wrong side of the age/performance curve already I really don't think there will be any "going for it" years for awhile. I think we may make small moves to help increase our odds of making a run, but I don't think you'll see a CC Sabathia type move. With us being a small market team, I really think slow and steady, accumulating talent, is the way to do it. I generally agree with the slow and steady thought but you don’t sign a 32 year old CF for 5 years and significant money if you are not “going for it.” The Cain move just makes less and less sense for me as the offseason goes on and we haven’t added a significant pitcher(s). It seems so half assed.
  22. He’s a better baseball player than any 2B option currently on the roster by a lot especially when you factor in how cheap he will be and we have 2 potentially (likely with Sogard) replacement level or worse options at 2B right now. He’s exponentially better than Sogard, 2 of the last 4 years he’s put up more WAR in a single season than Sogard has for his entire career and he’s more of a sure bet than Villar. You might lose upside with him vs villar but you are locking in a solid floor.
  23. Overall don’t care about lineup construction as long as like Yelich isn’t hitting 8th or whatever but vs RHP I would actually like Walker as a leadoff hitter. He had better OBP than Cain. I also like the idea of a contact hitter like Cain hitting behind the OBP/slugging guys. Vs RHP Walker 2B Yelich RF Braun LF Shaw 3B Cain CF Thames 1B Arcia SS Vogt/Pina C P
  24. This would worry me if it’s the case with Cain being 32 already and Braun to a lesser degree being on the wrong side of the age/performance curve already
  25. Eh, Villar has to get on base (and get starts) to use that speed so overall don't really care plus "speed" is a little overrated in todays game (IMO) in terms of base stealing just have to be a good baserunner. Plus Yelich and Cain help make up for any "speed" lost if/when Villar goes.
