  1. Are we supposed to assume Stewart is our big outfield acquisition if we do sign him? What if we make a trade at the winter meetings that brings in a big bat and Stewart becomes our 4th/5th outfielder alongside Gross? Depending on how much he signs for, I may very well prefer Stewart as our 4th/5th outfielder to Clark. Not to mention we'd then get a return on a Clark trade... I just think it's too early to decide whether or not this would be a good pickup. We don't know Melvin's plan and whatever additional information he may have concerning Stewart's health.
  2. Interestingly enough...a poster on the Bucks RealGM board mentioned "a friend" saying there was a Manny deal to Anaheim in the works and that the Brewers were somehow involved... But even he said it was likely BS, so I wouldn't count on it. But I thought it was interesting that you brought it up. Edit: I see Danzig beat me to it
  3. lol. This Google news search on "Craig Counsell" should clear things up: Counsell news search 37 minutes ago: "Report: Padres to ink versatile Counsell" 50 minutes ago: "Report: Brewers to sign Counsell" 1 hour ago: "Report: Padres to ink versatile Counsell" 1 hour ago: "Brewers closing in on Counsell" 4 hours go: "Craig Counsell: Reaches Agreement With San Diego"
  4. Bench Coach -- That was so this morning... Sounds like that was a false report and Counsell will be back with the Crew.
  5. I like it. Infield depth was a concern and even though Counsell's a Type B free agent, Graffi's potential 1st round compensation and sandwich pick, more than make up for it.
  6. Well I'm under the impression that Jenkins, Mench and Clark are being actively shopped (based on articles and rumors). So I wouldn't be surprised if at least two of those three are gone. That leaves us: Corey HartBill HallGabe GrossTGJLaynce Nix And I wouldn't be surprised if TGJ or Nix were included in a deal. It sounds like we've got a busy offseason still ahead for us. And we have several decent bargaining chips.
  7. An all right-handed platoon in leftfield with Mench is an interesting possibility. I have to believe that two of Jenkins, Clark and Mench will be dealt this offseason and if Mench is the one who sticks, I wouldn't mind a Stewart/Mench platoon in left with Hall/Hart/Gross covering center and right.
  8. I knew he had recent injury problems, but I hadn't realized it was a possibly chronic condition. I can't imagine we'd sign him if we thought he was still having problems, so hopefully Dougie checks his facts before agreeing to anything. That said, IF it hasn't become a chronic problem, I'd take him over Lofton...and I want NOTHING to do with Finley.
  9. 10. I've always liked the guy as he's always had a good average (.300+ in six of the last eight seasons and never below .274 in the last ten seasons). If he can get his OBP back up to his pre-2005 range (between .363 and .380) he'd be a great leadoff option for this team. Of course, this is all provided he stays healthy...
  11. This was mentioned in the Brewer Rumors thread, but according to Ben Maller, the Brewers are working on a one year deal for Shannon Stewart: www.benmaller.com/#123033 Edit: fixed spelling of last name
  12. I think Chad Moeller warped many of our minds into thinking Rivera is better than he really is.... 13. Here it is! HIGHLY unrealistic, but it makes me happy to think about: Sign SP Gil Meche - 3 years, $18mil RP Eric Gagne - 2 years, $8mil CF Kenny Lofton - 2 years, $8mil Trade CF Brady Clark to COL for minor leaguers OF Kevin Mench to ??? 14. Like Kevin Mench? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Seriously though...Although it'd be one expensive platoon, doesn't a Jenkins/Mench platoon make sense? Three year splits AVG OBP SLG OPS Jenkins .297 .366 .511 .877 (vs. righties) Mench .307 .379 .590 .969 (vs. lefties) If used properly (I know...a BIG if), these guys could boost their stats and provide some good trade bait at the deadline if Braun's ready to jump to the bigs.
  15. If Pierre's getting $9mil for possibly 5 seasons... I don't know if I want Roberts for what it might cost... Hopefully, if the Brewers are really pushing for his services, one of two things happen: Roberts age and lesser known name will drive his price down to something like 2 years $8-10 ($4-5 per). Or...Pierre's contract outprices Roberts for us and we consider alternative options. I really don't want to overpay for Roberts...especially when we have in house options.
  16. Reports indicate that the Brewers are attempting to stockpile starting pitching so they can trade Davis. I think most posters here assume that the Brewers will acquire some starting pitching before trading DD away.
  17. I think his performance and health in the first couple months of the season will have a lot to do with his trade value. He has a strong enough past to show that when healthy, he is a productive major leaguer. If he's healthy and playing well, a contender with a hole at third base (possibly via injury) may very well overpay for his services.
  18. Just for comparison sake, here's a few somewhat comparable trades: Corey Koskie (34 years old, $2mil in 2007) AB R HR RBI SB AVG OBP SLG OPS Previous year: 257 29 12 33 1 .261 .343 .490 .833 Joe Randa (35 years old, $2.15mil in 2005) AB R HR RBI SB AVG OBP SLG OPS Previous year: 485 65 8 56 0 .287 .343 .408 .751 Time of trade: 332 44 13 48 0 .289 .356 .491 .847 July 23, 2005: Traded by the Cincinnati Reds to the San Diego Padres for Justin Germano and Travis Chick. 19. Brit, I wasn't necessarily saying the team would be better with those moves. I was just pointing out that this could be an interesting offseason if the reports/rumors on what the Brewers are trying to do are true (i.e. trading for pitching to make Davis expendable; entertaining offers for Jenkins, Mench and Clark; trying to sign Roberts/Pierre; etc.). That said, I don't think these are moves just to make moves either. We currently have too much of our payroll dedicated to our outfield considering Hall (if that's where he ends up) and Hart are our best players out there and both will be paid less than three inferior players (Jenkins, Mench and Clark). After last season's debacle trying to find capable replacements for Sheets and Ohka, I have absolutely no problem trying to trade some of our excess outfielders for starting pitching. I think these moves set us up for a deeper, more well-rounded team. I'd love for the team to make some moves that drastically improve the starting group of guys, but from what we've heard this offseason so far, it looks like Doug will be tinkering the roster in other ways and hoping for the youngsters to develop into impact players.
  20. I can't say I disagree. However, where do you add the big bat? The only way I see us significantly improving the lineup is by putting Hall at short and signing a big bat for leftfield. That said, our team is so young, it's hard to predict what we already have. In a few years we may look back and wonder why a lineup that included Fielder, Weeks, Hall, Hart and possibly Braun could be questioned as much as it is. From what I've read, it looks like the Brewers are willing to take a chance on the youngsters stepping up.
  21. From the link above: It's interesting to hear that we're stockpiling arms, so we can trade Davis... Maybe we can do a contract for contract trade with Jenkins to get a little more quality insurance in the rotation. Staying with Baltimore, maybe they'd give up Benson (07:$7.5M, 08:$7.5M club option/$0.5M buyout) or maybe we could revisit Boston with Clement (07:$9.5M). What could we expect in trade for Davis? Getting a young, switch-hitting, prospect like Melky Cabrera from the Yankees could help make up for trading three outfielders (Jenkins, Mench, Clark). Add the addition of Roberts and this is a potentially interesting off-season for the crew: STARTERS BENCH/BULLPEN ON THE FARM ------------------ ------------------ ------------------ CF Dave Roberts C Mike Rivera C JD Closser SS JJ Hardy IF Jeff Cirillo 3B Ryan Braun 2B Rickie Weeks IF Vinny Rottino SS Yohannis Perez 1B Prince Fielder OF Gabe Gross OF Tony Gwynn Jr. LF Bill Hall OF Melky Cabrera OF Laynce Nix RF Corey Hart 3B Corey Koskie C Damian Miller SP Ben Sheets CL Francisco Cordero SP Carlos Villanueva SP Chris Capuano RP Derrick Turnbow SP Yovani Gallardo SP Benson/Clement RP Jose Capellan SP Zach Jackson SP Dave Bush RP Matt Wise SP Manny Parra SP Rodrigo Lopez RP Brian Shouse SP Tim Dillard RP Dennis Sarfate RP Dana Eveland -- Edit: Added Yohannis Perez to the farm. Hopefully he can surprise us in Spring Training and take a utility infielder spot
  22. I agree. Keep him at third. He's still growing into the position. That said...if we add a big bat this offseason, three likely spots to add it would be in leftfield, centerfield or thirdbase. If we lock someone up to play center or third, Hall could fill the other with Braun moving to left.
  23. Another update. I wanted to add Crawford as an offseason acquisition: Let'em walk: 3B David Bell SP Tomo Ohka (offer arby) SP Rick Helling RP Dan Kolb RP Jeremi Gonzalez Trade'em: SP Dana Eveland, SP Manny Parra, OF Charlie Fermaint (or similar package) for OF Carl Crawford 3B Corey Koskie, prospect(s) for 3B Morgan Ensberg OF Brady Clark or Kevin Mench, for prospect(s)/relief pitcher RF Geoff Jenkins, $4mil for prospect(s)/relief pitcher Sign'em: IF Tony Graffanino, 2 yrs $4.5mil (07: $2.0mil, 08: $2.5mil) Payroll: LF Carl Crawford 4.000 SS JJ Hardy 0.355 2B Rickie Weeks 0.500 1B Prince Fielder 0.329 3B Morgan Ensberg 4.500 RF Corey Hart 0.329 CF Bill Hall 3.000 C Damian Miller 3.750 C Mike Rivera 0.350 IF Tony Graffanino 2.000 IF Jeff Cirillo 0.800 OF Gabe Gross 0.355 OF Mench/Clark 4.000 SP Ben Sheets 10.000 SP Chris Capuano 4.000 SP Doug Davis 4.500 SP David Bush 0.352 SP Carlos Villanueva 0.350 CL Francisco Cordero 5.000 RP TRADE ACQUISITION 3.000 RP Jose Capellan 0.330 RP Matt Wise 1.000 RP Derrick Turnbow 2.300 RP Brian Shouse 1.500 RP Dennis Sarfate 0.350 -------- Payroll 56.950 OF Geoff Jenkins 4.000 -------- Total Paid 60.950
  24. I know it's impossible for us to fathom what would get a deal done (too many unknown factors on our end), but it's fun to speculate. I'd try to run a package of guys past the Devil Rays before offering up Gallardo. Maybe a combination of the following guys (with my preferred trade bait in each group listed first): Villanueva/Parra/InmanHendrickson/EvelandIribarren/Fermaint That being said, they could very well refuse any deal not including Gallardo and I would probably cave http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Potential Lineup (age on opening day 2007) LF Carl Crawford (25 years old) SS JJ Hardy (24 years old) 2B Rickie Weeks (24 years old) 1B Prince Fielder (22 years old) RF Corey Hart (25 years old) CF Bill Hall (27 years old) 3B Corey Koskie (33 years old) C Damian Miller (37 years old)
  25. That is a very VERY nice contract situation for a very good, young player. If we can get him for any pitcher outside of Sheets, Capuano and Gallardo, it's a no-brainer. That said, it'd be hard not to pull the trigger even with one of those three, with Gallardo being the best match.
