  1. Fangraphs has Mears and Peguero instead of Yoho and Hall. They also have Dunn instead of Monasterio. I wish we’d pick up a starting 3B, so we’re not here debating Dunn vs. Monasterio. I also figure we’re expecting a Thomas vs. Alexander decision at some point relatively early in the season.
  2. - RHP Oliver Camilo released by DSL Brewers-1
  3. Not getting INF Kike Hernandez:
  4. We might choose to hold off on adding any more starting pitchers to our 40-man MLB roster until we’ve decided what to do with Connor Thomas (or if we face a distressing new injury). Until then; CF Rodriguez has already burned one option. Chad Patrick is already 26 years old, after throwing one very effective AAA season. We said that Rule 5 pick Connor Thomas will be given a chance to start. In October, Murphy talked about Ashby being a candidate to throw more innings. There’s been some speculation that Elvin Rodriguez could be a multi-inning guy. Logan Henderson has never struggled at any level and is already on the MLB roster. I’d imagine that these constitute the main starting pitching depth options which Murphy and Hook will have to sift through if there are injuries or any starters falter (Peralta, Civale, Cortes, Myers, Hall).
  5. INF Freddy Zamora is headed to Taiwan before 2026 WBC qualifiers against South Africa, Spain and Chinese Taipei later this month:
  6. Old friend OF Joe Gray Jr. has signed with the Lake County DockHounds of the independent American Association.
  7. The Winter League season concluded with the Dominican Republic 1-hitting previously-undefeated Mexico 1-0 to capture the Caribbean Series. 42-year old Robinson Cano knocked in what proved to be the winning run on a ground ball double play (no RBI) in the 3rd inning. 39-year old Esmil Rogers got the win and 33-year old Jimmy Cordero earned the save.
  8. In the wake of the Bucks’ trade deadline lowering expectations, a thought flashed through my dispirited mind: Would we possibly trade for INF Anthony Rendon and how much of his remaining 2-year salary would we be willing to take on?
  9. All 29 international free agent signings are on the MILB transaction log, with RHP Luis Aguayo and LHP Daniel Garcia added a few days after the main signing day (and back-dated on the log).
  10. Puerto Rico jumped ahead 7-1 over Venezuela in the 3rd place game and held on to win 7-4. RHP Justin Yeager conceded those 3 ninth inning runs (0.2 IP, 3 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 1 K). SS Eduardo Garcia pinch hit against Yeager, walking and scoring for Venezuela. Thus concludes the Brewers’ portion of Winter League ball. The Caribbean Series finale between Mexico and the Dominican Republic takes place tonight at 9pm CST
  11. Thanks for this interesting piece. Though by my count, we're already up to 57 MLB/AAA/AA pitchers in the organization, so I figure we're counting on the cream to rise to the top while Murphy and Hook work their magic. We still need a top infield bat o!
  12. SS Eduardo Garcia (1-for-4, 2B, walk) and Venezuela had plenty of chances (3-for-19 with RISP; 12 LOB), but ultimately fell 5-4 in 11 innings to the Dominican Republic in the semifinal. They had bases loaded, nobody out in the 8th inning (scored 1); 2-on, 1-out in the 9th (no runs); 2-on, nobody out in the 11th (no runs). Garcia doubled to lead off the 3rd inning (didn’t score), then later K’d on 3 pitches for the 2nd out of the 11th inning (crucial at-bat). He also misplayed a potential double play ball early in the game (no error charged). Mexico defeated Puerto Rico 3-1 in the other semifinal. RHP Justin Yeager did not play. Puerto Rico and Venezuela will face off in the third place match at 9pm tonight.
  13. I had wondered if the Meccages were related. Also, it's apparently pronounced "message":
  14. Some excitement for former Brewer RHP Tyler Thornburg (9 MLB seasons in all) joining Biloxi as an associate coach:
  15. @BrewersPD also unveiled our Player Development and Performance personnel for 2025. I note that Will Schierholz and J.J. Reimer were Biloxi's pitching and hitting coaches last year.
  16. 2024 Carolina League Manager of the Year Nick Stanley is also back, ready to coach the Low-A Carolina Mudcats again. They're going with two pitching coaches this year, including Paul Moeller (2024 Biloxi bullpen coach) and Blake Nation (2024 ACL Brewers pitching coach).
  17. 2024 Midwest League Manager of the Year Victor Estevez will helm the High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers again in 2025. It's worth noting hitting coach Evan Berliner's leap from the Arizona Complex League two levels to the cold north.
  18. Manager Joe Ayrault also returns in 2025 to coach the AA Biloxi Shuckers, which is great to see after he missed some time in 2024 for health reasons. As @Jim Goulart highlighted above, hitting coach Kevin Martir has joined from the Yankees' organization.
  19. Manager Rick Sweet is back to coach the AAA 2025 Nashville Sounds. We're going with 2 pitching coaches this year, including Justin Meccage coming over from the Pirates and Bryan Leslie (also Lead Strategist of Pitching Development) focusing on one affiliate for the first time. And we've got 2 hitting coaches again, with Tim Doherty bumping up 2 levels from Wisconsin and Zack Jones joining from the Phillies/Driveline.
  20. There’s no rest for the weary, as the clubs jump right into the knock-out semifinals later today: - Dominican Republic (2-2) vs. Venezuela (2-2) at 4pm CST - Puerto Rico (2-2) vs. Mexico (4-0) at 9pm CST
  21. 26-year old free agent RHP Jesus Vargas threw the 8-inning no-hit shutout against Japan. Here’s the RBI single by SS Eduardo Garcia:
  22. RHP Justin Yeager (1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 K) notches yet another save, this time helping Puerto Rico close out a 10-7 comeback win over the Dominican Republic. SS Eduardo Garcia (2-for-4, RBI) and Venezuela no-hit and demolished Japan 10-0 in the other contest.
  23. Under-rated terrific trade given $$$: Renfroe 2023 WAR: 0.4 Peguero 2023 WAR: 0.6 Wong-Winker trade might have looked better if Counsell played Toro during his season-ending 41-game on-base streak. Contreras and Payamps for a player we didn’t believe could play center field is spectacular. Missed it on Topa and Erceg, but got it back with Megill, Bryse Wilson and a bit of Owen Miller. Can’t feel bad about Tyson Miller, since the Dodgers, Mets and Mariners each let him go too.
  24. Maybe the upcoming 60-day IL placements will loosen up the free agent and trade market a bit:
  25. Venezuela recovered from their poor start (3 errors, down 5-1) to score 9 unanswered runs and defeat Puerto Rico 10-5. SS Eduardo Garcia went 2-for-5 with a double and 2 runs scored. Mexico defeated Japan 7-2 in the other contest. The Group Stage finishes on Tuesday with Venezuela (1-2) playing Japan (0-3) and P.R. (1-2) battling D.R. (2-1).
