  1. I really appreciate the analysis! Hopefully CF-Rod adjusts well to AAA ball in 2024 to set himself up to join the MLB rotation at some point in 2025. Marco Estrada produced over 11 WAR and made over $50 million in his career, so it would be quite respectable if Carlos F. Rodriguez achieves something along those lines. His youth means he could even have more solid MLB years than Estrada did, but let's get through 2024 first. Go Carlos!!
  2. From Thursday: Manager Victor Estevez's Escogido squad mustered only 4 singles and 1 walk in their 4-0 loss to Estrellas Orientales, falling short of their quest to reach the Dominican Championship Series. Better luck next winter RHP Christian Mejias' Aragua team defeated La Guaira 3-0, but were mathematically eliminated from reaching the Venezuelan Champion Series due to Lara's win elsewhere
  3. Rough Wednesday results: - RHP Christian Mejias - 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 BB, 0 Ks - in Aragua’s 4-2 loss to Caracas - Manager Victor Estevez’s Escogido team lost 4-3 to Cibao - C Brian Navarreto’s Carolina club lost Game 5 of their series 3-2 to Caguas
  4. Here's an article on catcher Brian Navarreto being absent on the field (due to a hand injury), but still making his presence felt from the dugout for Carolina in the Puerto Rico Championship Series. (English version using Google Translate) It mentions that Navarreto played with the injury for about 10 days before stopping and that the Brewers are recalling him today. As to game action, his Carolina teammates defeated Caguas 10-4 on Tuesday to even the best-of-9 series at 2 games apiece. Elsewhere, Manager Victor Estevez's Escogido Lions got a big 8-1 win over the Licey Tigers in the Dominican Republic. The two teams are now tied for second place with just 2 games remaining. I'm assuming that Escogido holds the tiebreaker (4-2 record vs. Licey in this Round Robin phase) so can clinch a berth in the championship series by winning out.
  5. I'm not surprised that we've kept our foot on the pedal in terms of the quality (3 highly-ranked studs) and size (35 players) of the international class. However, if MLB is really going to implement reduced aggregate MILB rosters this year, it likely means we'll see a LOT of cuts across MILB in early June. It also means the days of the vast majority of Brewers' DSL players getting two seasons to show their stuff may be behind us. I actually think that this constitutes a business opportunity (e.g. sign 120 available young players dirt-cheap every June, develop them in a new league for 2 years, then sell the best back to affiliated baseball), but I don't have the time or money to pursue it.
  6. Each of Junk, Patrick and Myers has a case to start or be in the ‘pen. With McGee perhaps still recovering from TJ surgery, I assume we’ll keep most of them stretched out. I also think it’s likely that one of Perkins, Wiemer or Mitchell starts the season in AAA, which only adds to the AAA OF glut. As usual, a few players will likely be stashed in April-May: Development List, injured list, ACL roster, temporarily inactive, etc.
  7. Summary of Sunday Action: RHP Christian Mejias - 2 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks - in Aragua's 3-2 loss to Margarita, which dropped Aragua to a 3-8 record in Round Robin play with 5 games remaining in Venezuela C Brian Navarrato was absent again, as Carolina fell 4-2 to Caguas. They now trail the best-of-9 championship series 2 games to 1 in Puerto Rico Manager Victor Estevez's Escogido Lions got a key win, 8-5 over the Licey Tigers. They now trail Licey by 1 game for second place (and a berth in the championship series), with 3 games remaining in the Dominican Republic
  8. On Saturday, C Brian Navarreto was absent again (right hand issue), as Carolina dropped Game 2 against Caguas, 13-4, levelling the best-of-9 championship series in Puerto Rico. Checking in on Manager Victor Estevez's Escogido squad in the Dominican Republic, they grabbed a 7-6 win over Cibao to improve to a 6-8 record in round robin play. They're 2 games behind 2nd place Licey with 4 games remaining, with a big match-up against Licey on Sunday.
  9. C Brian Navarreto is out nursing an injury to his right hand, but his Carolina teammates came through with a 3-2 victory over Caguas in 11 innings to take Game 1 of the Puerto Rico championship series. Elsewhere, RHP Christian Mejias couldn’t help Aragua from falling to a 3-6 record in Venezuelan round robin play: 0.2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 0 Ks - in their 9-6 loss to Lara.
  10. Would they eat a material chunk of Josh Bell’s $16.5m contract?
  11. On Wednesday, C Brian Navarreto had a rest day, but his Carolina teammates came through with a Game 7 semifinal series victory at home over Ponce, 4-3. Carolina's Best-of-9 Championship Series against Caguas in Puerto Rico will commence on Friday evening.
  12. From Tuesday's games: RHP Christian Mejias - 0.2 IP, 1 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 1 K - in Aragua's 7-2 victory over Caracas to improve their Round Robin (essentially the semi-final round) record to 3-4 with 9 games remaining in Venezuela Manager Victor Estevez's Leones del Escogido squad lost a key game against Tigres del Licey 3-1 to fall to a Round Robin record of 4-7 with 7 games remaining in the Dominican Republic
  13. Nobody can do anything until Keston Hiura signs in Japan or Korea. That's the real hold up.
  14. On Monday, C Brian Navarreto went 1-for-4 in Carolina's 8-1 loss to Ponce, which evened their semifinal series at 3 games apiece. Nobody attempted to steal on him. The series finale is scheduled for Wednesday evening.
  15. Sunday Winter League action: C Brian Navarreto - 0-for-3, with a sacrifice; no steal attempts against him - in Carolina's 3-0 loss to Ponce which reduced Carolina's semifinal series lead to 3 games to 2 in Puerto Rico RHP Christian Mejias - 0.1 IP, 2 R, 0 H, 2 BB - in Aragua's 10-3 loss to Lara. Aragua is one of 4 teams battling for 2nd place (i.e. a place in the final) with 11 games to play in Venezuela Manager Victor Estevez's Leones del Escogido squad defeated Tigres del Licey 12-8 to claw within 1 game of Licey for 2nd place (i.e. a place in the final) with 9 games to play in the Dominican Republic Earlier in the season, Manager Nestor Corredor's Aguilas del Zulia squad placed 6th of 8 teams in the Venezuelan regular season, then were eliminated by 5th place Aragua in the play-in series.
  16. - On Friday, C Brian Navarreto entered as a defensive replacement in the bottom of the 9th inning, as Carolina fended off a 2-on, nobody out (and bases loaded, 2-out) situation to defeat Ponce 5-3 and take a 3-1 semifinal series lead.
  17. I was expecting something along this line: below Haase in contract status, above Navarreto in MLB experience. I wouldn’t expect Quero to be promoted early in the season, so any injury time (God forbid) for Contreras or Haase in April/May would very likely see a Nola or Navarreto call-up for that period. Having retained Navarreto and added Haase, Nola, R. Rodriguez and D. Garcia, I think we’ve nearly re-established our catching depth, though we still need Jose Sibrian or another player for High-A Wisconsin (I think).
  18. Oh the knees, God help the knees! - C Brian Navarreto caught all 19 innings (yes, you read that correctly) of Carolina’s 3-2 victory to take a 2-1 series lead over Ponce in Puerto Rico on Thursday - Navarreto - 0-for-7 at the plate. Threw out 1 of 2 attempted basestealers. Also picked off a runner at first base. Carolina won on an Adeiny Hechavarria walk-off solo shot - In Venezuela, RHP Christian Mejias - 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 1 K - in Aragua’s 6-5 victory over Lara
  19. - Signed C David Garcia and assigned to AAA Nashville The switch-hitting Garcia spent 7 years (6 seasons) in the Rangers’ organization before reaching minor league free agency. He’ll turn 24 in February.
  20. On Wednesday, C Brian Navaretto went 1-for-4 with an RBI double, but it wasn’t enough as Ponce tied up the semifinal series 1-1 with a 3-1 win over Carolina. There were no steal attempts against him.
  21. C Brian Navarreto went 0-for-4, but nobody attempted to steal against him as Carolina won the opening game of its playoff semifinal series 4-2 over Ponce on Tuesday.
  22. On New Year's Eve, Brisbane won their series finale over Sydney 3-1 in extra innings. Box score. Gardner was a key contributor once again: RHP Sam Gardner - 1.2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K (0.00 ERA) 1B Tayden Hall - 1-for-4, run scored (.313 AVG) With a record of 17-11, Brisbane sits one game behind first place Adelaide and a half game ahead of third place Perth, with about 12 games remaining on the season.
  23. Brisbane split yet another doubleheader this morning, dropping the opener to Sydney 2-1 and winning the second game behind LHP Brian Fitzpatrick’s bounce back performance 6-2. - Fitzpatrick (Win) - 5 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 3 Ks - 1B Tayden Hall - combined 4-for-7 (all singles, though benefitting from some poor defense), walk, 2 RBIs Here are some video highlights from the victory - easy to spot the 6'7" southpaw Fitzpatrick within the clips:
  24. On Thursday, C Brian Navarreto smacked the tie-breaking double in the top of the 10th inning as Carolina defeated RA12 4-3: - Navarreto - 2-for-5, double, RBI, run - also threw out the only attempted basestealer
  25. 1B Tayden Hall has really turned things around after a slow start, while RHP Sam Gardner remains unhittable. On Friday, Brisbane defeated Sydney 9-7. Box score. - Hall - 2-for-3, double, 2 walks, RBI (.294 AVG) - Gardner - 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks (0.00 ERA) Catch Hall’s (jersey #48) double and one of Gardner’s (jersey #21) Ks in the video highlights.
