  1. Gulp. Edgardo Ordonez walked and Miguel Briceno doubled him to third with one out, but neither run comes home. Now 1-for-8 with RISP. The D-backs actually played the match-up, bringing in a LHP to face left-handed hitting RF Reece Walling (strikeout) and CF Luis Medina (groundout), with the Brewers not subbing in any of the 6 right-handed bats on the bench. 21-year old RHP Brailin Rodriguez now comes in for the bottom of the 5th inning.
  2. KC Hunt got the two strikeouts, but they sandwiched a 2-run single to reduce our lead to 5-3 going into the 5th inning. The D-backs only have 3 hits but are 2-3 w/RISP vs. 1-for-6 w/RISP for the Brewers. That’s what’s keeping this game tight. Suggested strategy; let’s keep hitting and scoring.
  3. Trouble in the bottom of the 4th inning: back-to-back one-out walks from starting RHP Felipe De Los Santos prompt a mound visit, followed immediately by an RBI double and a pitching change. Undrafted 23-year old RHP KC Hunt enters with a 5-1 lead, runners on 2nd and 3rd base and one out in the bottom of the 4th inning. Hunt was last seen conceding two runs (one earned) in 1.2 IP in Thursday's playoff semifinal. Bear down, Mr. Hunt!
  4. Two 3rd inning singles didn't bring in any runs, so the Brewers got a double (1B Yeison Perez), single (SS Cooper Pratt) and sacrifice fly (2B Juan Baez) in the 4th inning to now lead 5-0.
  5. An RBI infield single from 1B Yeison Perez makes it 2-0, followed by a run-scoring GIDP, then a run-scoring error. It's 4-0 through going into the bottom of the 2nd inning. Go Brewers!!!
  6. And the ACL Brewers strike first blood, with three singles and a walk to open the 2nd inning. It's 1-0, bases loaded nobody out. C Edgardo Ordonez (single to CF) got things started and CF Luis Medina gets the first RBI (infield single). Let's put up a BIG number!
  7. No score through one inning: Eric Bitonti drew a walk. The Brewers conceded a harmless 2-out single, with Felipe De Los Santos recording one strikeout.
  8. It's ACL Championship Time. Manager Rafael Neda goes back to the lineup from their first two playoff games, with 20-year old RHP Felipe De Los Santos getting the start against ACL D-backs Red: Cooper Pratt - SS Juan Baez - 2B Eric Bitonti - 3B Satchell Norman - DH Edgardo Ordonez - OF Miguel Briceno - LF Reece Walling - RF Luis Medina - CF Yeison Perez - 1B Felipe De Los Santos - P
  9. So cool to have two flamethrowers. One malfunctions, just pull out the other one.
  10. AA Biloxi looks for a 2nd straight win to salvage a 2-4 home series loss to Pensacola. RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez makes his 2nd start of the week (6 IP, 4 R, 4 H, 0 BB, 1 HBP, 6 Ks on Tuesday). RF Carlos D. Rodriguez returns to the lineup after being a late scratch yesterday, while C Jeferson Quero unsurprisingly rests after a nasty foul ball off the mask yesterday.
  11. There we go: Hendry Mendez single, then 2-out RBI hits by Ben Metzinger, Eduarqui Fernandez and Eric Brown Jr. Rattlers cut the deficit to 4-3 in the 5th inning.
  12. Halfway through their game, the Timber Rattlers are being out-hit 9-1 and trail 4-0. Lots of work to do. C’mon bats!!
  13. Will Childers of the Mudcats pummeled: 8 R, 12 H (6 extra-base hits) in 4.1 IP. Just one K. I can’t help thinking that Lara (now with Wisconsin) must be a pivotal player/glue-guy. This team is too talented to be losing 9-0 to anyone. Time to turn over a better leaf next week.
  14. AAA Nashville aims to close out a 5-1 series win at Gwinnett, with RHP Janson Junk (4.37 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 6.0 K/9 in 111.1 IP) getting the start today. After a rest day, LF Keston Hiura and his 1.070 August OPS (84 PAs) return to the lineup.
  15. Low-A Carolina also strives for a series clinching home win today against Columbia. RHP Will Childers (5.26 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 6.9 K/9 in 49.2 IP) starts the finale. 19-year old CF Dylan O’Rae has hit safely in 18 of his last 19 games.
  16. High-A Wisconsin goes for a 4-2 home series win over Quad Cities, with 21-year old RHP Edwin Jimenez (4.09 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 8.8 K/9 in 101.1 IP) getting the start. 3B Mike Boeve has 29 RBIs in 25 games played.
  17. To me, there’s no point calling up Toro if we won’t play him at 3B/2B. If we’re calling up someone who’s not permitted to play defense (Toro, Hiura, Winker), then Hiura should come up by virtue of having the best bat. But if we intend to call up someone who can play in the field, then I guess the choice is between Owen Miller or Jahmai Jones. We’ll see…
  18. After using 14 pitchers and one position player to pitch over the past 3 days, it’s natural to wonder “Who’s left?” to pitch for the ACL Brewers in the championship game. Well, I see five guys left, two of which have thrown 4 innings in a game this year: - Brailin Rodriguez - 21 - 8.16 ERA - 4 IP max this year - Felipe De Los Santos - 20 - 7.71 ERA - 4 IP max - Anfernny Reyes - 19 - 4.85 ERA - 3.1 IP max - Craig Yoho (8th round pick - reliever) - 23 - 10.13 ERA - 1 IP max - Isaiah Jackson (undrafted signee - reliever) - 21 - 6.75 ERA - 1 IP max Of course, some pitchers used in prior games will likely be available for an inning or two - e.g. Mark Manfredi, Manuel Rodriguez, Blake Whiting. But if we expect/need anyone to go long, Brailin, Felipe and Anfernny are the logical guys. I’d predict that Brailin gets the start.
  19. Yeah, the team can go any number of ways with the Sep 1 call-up. My original comment above on Lauer was only in terms of MLB starter depth. I’m one of those who wanted to see Lauer limited to 2 innings/appearance in AAA, so as to develop him into a terrific MLB relief option down the stretch. The fact that we’ve opted for long outings for him makes me think that Lauer’s actually less likely to get the Sep 1 call-up, instead being held as reserve starting depth in AAA. But I won’t mind if he gets the call. I won’t get my hopes up on Gasser as a Sep 1 call-up after what happened with Frelick last year. That said, I’d love to see him get the call. He leads AAA in strikeouts and could be incredibly effective in relief, especially if it came with a slight velocity tick-up.
  20. WANT to see: Hiura, Gasser. THINK we’ll see: Miller, Andrews.
  21. To me, he’s like Brian Navarreto - AAA cap / future coach. This is Sibrian’s 8th season of MILB ball. He’s doing awesome things defensively for Low-A Carolina and also having a nice offensive season. This is helping player development at that level, but I don’t believe there’s any view of this carrying up to MLB, I’m sorry to say.
  22. He has the athleticism and raw power to eventually make the major leagues, starting against right-handers. It’s odd that it’s taken him 7 MILB seasons to finally play even a little bit of AA ball - this is a quirk of the Covid year, oddly-delayed promotion then late season injury while raking in 2021 Low-A, 2022 injuries, terrible start to 2023. He’ll reach minor league free agency this offseason and I don’t believe there’s much chance of us adding him to the 40-man MLB roster. So we’ll either re-sign him like Erceg and Sibrian last offseason or see him continue his baseball journey elsewhere.
  23. I’m speaking in terms of if/when the Brewers need a starting pitcher - I believe they’d want that starter to be highly capable of giving them 6-7 innings. Lauer’s not quite there yet, having gone 5 IP and 4.2 IP in his last 2 outings. He’s not reached 6 IP in any outing since April, whereas Rea (on MLB 40-man roster) and McKendry (likely 40-man add in Nov 2023, so could naturally be added now) have done it severally. For service time, my understanding is that Lauer’s been down long enough, so he can’t complete his 5th service time year if called up now. I believe that gives us the extra year of arbitration/control. Assuming no MLB starter is injured, any of Rea, McKendry, Lauer, Mejia (if healthy), Andrews, Small, Sousa, Bukauskas, Junk, Abad, Claudio or Vieira could be added on September 1st. But if we actually need a starting pitcher on relatively short notice, I believe that Rea is the man (at this immediate time), followed by McKendry, then Lauer, then Teheran, largely based on demonstrated ability to deliver a long start right now.
  24. It's looking like a complete reversal of the Brewers' Friday minor league results, as the Sounds fell tonight and ACL Brewers are down 7-1, but Carolina and Biloxi were victorious and the Timber Rattlers lead 12-4.
