  1. Gotta be an awesome experience for: - 28-year old LHP Darrell Thompson, who’s yet to make his affiliated debut - 25-year old RHP Kaleb “Bo” Bowman, who’s also yet to make his affiliated debut - 19-year old OF Hendry Mendez - 23-year old OF Je’Von Ward, who missed the 2022 season with injury

  4. Nice to see RHP Moises Gomez back in action after taking last season off. He's still just 26 years old. And then 25-year old RHP Justin Yeager was part of the William Contreras heist. Yeager K'd 178 batters in 117.2 innings over three active minor league seasons (2019-2022) with the Braves.
  5. I suspect some behind-the-scenes discussion on whether franchises will be allowed to have 2 state-side rookie teams, like the Brewers, Giants, Diamondbacks and Astros did last year. The D-backs only announced minor league staff for full-season levels, while the Astros published a similar graphic as the Brewers (one state-side rookie level manager, but a lot of extra coaches). Don’t be surprised if they’re arguing about it with MLB and we may not know definitely ‘til May.
  6. Zamora, Valerio, Black, Brown, Moore, Garcia, Murray, Acosta and Raabe all vying for middle infield time in AA / High-A. Exciting times.
  7. We can be so cheap at times (e.g. no 2022 deadline bat, declined Boxberger option, DFA of Lamet, etc.), but then make a maddening decision like putting Jose Urena at $1.25 million on the 2022 OD roster. But my guess is we'll opt to be cheap again, thus keeping Hiura and his guaranteed $2.2 million salary and even refusing to send Varland back to Dodgers after paying $100k to get him (though $50k can be retrieved). I predict we'll option Voit (after adding to 40-man), Cousins and Turang, even though they're likely amongst our top 26 players. And we'll trade Payamps if there's no other pitcher injury. C: Contreras, Caratini IF: Adames, Tellez, Urias, Brosseau, Hiura OF: Yelich, Mitchell, Taylor DH: Winker UT: Anderson, Toro SP: Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, Lauer, Miley, Houser RP: Williams, Bush, Strzelecki, Milner, Guerra, Wilson, Varland
  8. Voit would likely exercise a spring training opt-out if we don’t add him to the 40-man roster by an agreed date. Same reason we added Travis Shaw in March 2021 and were going to add Wade Miley in March 2018 before he suffered a late Spring injury and we agreed on an alternative plan.
  9. I think Voit is 3 days short of attaining 5 years of service. And I think that anyone who makes the OD roster gets their salary guaranteed for the year. Assuming those things are true, the most likely scenario would seem to be to add Voit to the 40-man roster in mid-March, option him to AAA to start the year, then add him to the MLB club during the season with the hope that he can stick for good.
  10. Looks like Ethan Small will be the first man up if Hoby Milner suffers an early injury.
  11. RHH Voit's reverse splits are pretty pronounced, with a higher OPS against righties (combining MLB/MILB stats) all 5 seasons from 2018-2022. Hmmm...who does this remind us of? I can't help but imagine there's a bizarre passive-aggressive dance going on between Counsell and our GMs. GM: Play Hiura against righties! C: Never!!!!!! C: Hiura's on a little hot streak. Trade him! GM: Never!!!!!! In fact, we'll burn his final option, thus forcing you to have him on your roster NEXT season too!! C: At least we can save money by not tendering him. Just trade him for scraps like we did with Chase Anderson a few years ago. GM: We've just guaranteed Hiura a $2.2 million salary for 2023. He WILL be on your Opening Day roster!!! C: I'll NEVER accept that a major leaguer has reverse splits! GM: Here, have Luke Voit! 124 OPS+ in 1,838 MLB PAs. MLB home run leader in the 2020 season. Reverse splits for 5 consecutive years! Now you must CHOOSE between Hiura and Voit!!!! Ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!!!
  12. No, we burned Hiura's third and final option on July 13, 2022 when he was in the midst of a 1.026 OPS stretch (.324 AVG / .432 OBP / .595 SLG) in 44 PAs (12 games) from June 17 through July 10. Of course, the 16 Ks and .500 BABIP during that stretch were frightening, but I fear this was our last glimpse of Hiura having a bit of trade value. Naturally, forfeiting the last option reduced his trade value (and self-confidence?) even further.
  13. Thanks for this. 33-year old NRI Eddy Alvarez has mainly played SS/2B/3B while hammering AAA pitching from 2018-2022. I’m not sure why we’ve listed him as an outfielder. Hopefully he has some more good years in him.
  14. Well, we signed LHP Justin Wilson, though he'll be out until July which means the Brewers could still add another lefty in spring training or early in the season. If the remaining free agents are too rich for our blood, then we may wait-and-see which NRIs aren't selected by their clubs and thus choose to opt out in late March, e.g.: Danny Duffy - Rangers Sean Doolittle - Nationals Daniel Norris - Reds Chasen Shreve - Tigers Ryan Borucki - Cubs Danny Coulombe - Twins Alex Young - Reds Ryan Sherriff - Red Sox Caleb Smith - Pirates Sean Newcomb - Giants
  15. With LHPs Ashby and Wilson on the shelf early in the year, we’ll have to keep a close eye on Ethan Small, Thomas Pannone and Alex Claudio in spring training and AAA ball, as any of them could easily see an early-season call-up if there’s an injury to Lauer, Miley or Milner.
  16. $3.35 million for ~1.4 seasons probably looks attractive compared to whatever Smith, Hand and Britton are asking for: - $850k guaranteed in 2023 - $2.5m club option for 2024 OR $150k buyout https://apnews.com/article/mlb-sports-milwaukee-brewers-cincinnati-reds-jason-alexander-3bd9473b0b87d6bd5133f847fe397c58
  17. I’d imagine Alexander and Ashby could be candidates for the 60-day injured list. Hey Matt Arnold: that means you should add 1-2 MLB players:
  18. After Hader lost an arbitration case, the relationship was strained and he became a one inning guy (almost exclusively for save opportunities), which was less valuable to the club than a 2-inning fireman role, in my opinion. What’s in store for Burnes? Throw 80 pitches every 6th day?
  19. One of the undesirable lefty relievers is off the board: Reds Sign Daniel Norris To Minor League Deal Still waiting on the solid short name guys to find landing spots: Matt Moore, Will Smith, Brad Hand...
  20. Thanks. Was going off memory reflex, since Bleday and Puk were both ranked highly for a few years recently. For his part, Puk did put up solid MLB bullpen numbers in 2022, but apparently he only nets a former top prospect in return.
  21. In the last few weeks, at least 7 teams have added a left-handed reliever that I think are worth noting when considering our current 40-man roster: Diamondbacks - Andrew Chafin (FA signing) Marlins - AJ Puk (trade for a top prospect) Royals - Aroldis Chapman (FA signing) Rangers - Danny Duffy (MILB signing, but presumably with expectation to be added to 40-man shortly after Brett Martin goes on the 60-day injured list) Cardinals - Anthony Misiewicz (traded for cash considerations in DFA window) Astros - Matt Gage (claimed for $1 in DFA window) Mariners - Tayler Saucedo (claimed for standard fee in DFA window)
  22. I guess we didn't want LHP Matt Gage either. He was claimed by the Astros. It appears that Gage was initially placed on Outright Waivers by the Blue Jays, but unclaimed over the first few days, meaning that nobody was willing to pay the standard $50,000 claim fee. But then part-way through DFA limbo, they switched him to Release Waivers and he was selected by the Astros for a $1 claim fee. Gage then had 5 days to accept or reject the claim, ultimately accepting. MLB.com can now update the example they use in their Release Waivers definition.
  23. Diamondbacks To Sign Andrew Chafin https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/02/diamondbacks-agree-to-sign-andrew-chafin.html
  24. Day 8 (Thursday) of the 2023 Caribbean Series – Semi-Finals Powerhouses Venezuela and the Dominican Republic maintained their momentum, qualifying for the semi-finals with Wednesday victories, then defeating Columbia and Mexico, respectively, in the single-elimination semifinals on Thursday. No Brewers played in the semi-finals, but RHP Arnaldo Hernandez may play for Venezuela in the Championship Game against the Dominican Republic scheduled for Friday, along with old friends Orlando Arcia and Hernan Perez Scores from Day Eight: Venezuela 7, Columbia 5 Dominican Republic 8, Mexico 3
