1. Colin Rea makes his third start for Nashville, hoping to get his first win and avoid his 3rd loss! He was quite effective in 48 innings in Japan before returning state-side for personal reasons. Keston Hiura’s batting 5th, trying to snap out of a 1-for-20 funk:
2. RHP Brannon Jordan (9th round pick) assigned to ACL Gold. Missed this earlier: Je'Von Ward placed on Wisconsin's 7-day injured list.
3. Three moves involving AA Biloxi: - LHP Andy Otero transferred to Biloxi from Triple-A Nashville - OF Jesus Lujano activated from the Development List - RHP Carlos Luna placed on the injured list, retroactive to 8/26
4. In true upside-down bizarro world fashion, Biloxi are the sole winners amongst the MLB club and top 4 affiliates, easily handling Rocket City 6-2. https://www.milb.com/gameday/trash-pandas-vs-shuckers/2021/08/26/645079#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=645079 https://www.milb.com/biloxi/news/howell-s-career-night-powers-shuckers-to-6-2-victory The team had 9 hits by 7 players, but Korry Howell did most of the damage: 2-5, HR, 5 RBIs. Garrett Mitchell and David Hamilton were each on base 3 games, while Mitchell stole 2 bases and Hamilton stole one. Professional pitcher Lucas Erceg collected his second straight win, throwing 5 innings and only yielding one run (unearned). Braden Webb also threw two shutout innings in relief.
5. Nashville lost another close one, putting them on the wrong end of 11 of their last 13 games, this one 2-1 to Gwinnett. https://www.milb.com/gameday/stripers-vs-sounds/2021/08/26/647125#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=647125 https://www.milb.com/nashville/news/sounds-drop-third-straight-to-gwinnett Matt Lipka had 3 of the team's 6 hits (including a double), with Westbrook (single), Vogelbach (RBI single) and Dahl (double) collecting the others. Josh Lindblom took the tough loss: 2 earned runs in 6.0 innings with 8 strikeouts. Yardley, Alvarez and Torres-Costa pitched 3 shutout innings in relief.
6. The Timber Rattlers briefly held a 3-2 lead in the 5th, but gave it back the same inning and ultimately lost to Quad Cities 7-5. https://www.milb.com/gameday/timber-rattlers-vs-river-bandits/2021/08/26/643921#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=643921 https://www.milb.com/wisconsin/news/river-bandits-rally-past-rattlers Two hits a piece for Freddy Zamora, Kekai Rios and Carlos Rodriguez, with doubles for Rios, Rodriguez and Joey Wiemer. Is Joey Wiemer injured? He was due up as the tying run with two on and two outs in the 9th, but was instead pinch hit for (McClanahan walked, then Valerio had an RBI walk and Warren made the final out). Starting pitcher Nick Bennett can't seem to get going, losing his 4th in 5 games since coming back down from AA Biloxi. Nash Walters pitched 2 shutout innings in relief.
7. Rare back to back losses for the Mudcats, who fall 3-2 to Fredericksburg despite outhitting them 8-5. https://www.milb.com/gameday/mudcats-vs-nationals/2021/08/26/649121#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=649121 https://www.milb.com/carolina-mudcats/news/wilson-homers-and-campbell-collects-three-hits-in-3-2-loss Mike Wilson homered, Noah Campbell went 3-for-3 and Ernesto Martinez went 2-4 to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Tyler Black reached base three times, while Sal Frelick posted a rare 0-for-5 game. Jefferson Figueroa took the loss (4 innings, 3.earned runs), while Robbie Baker and James Meeker pitched 4 shutout innings. Thankfully Down East and Salem both also lost, keeping Carolina 2 games ahead of them for the 2nd playoff spot.
8. Over his last 17.0 innings of work, Lucas Erceg has perhaps changed his Rule 5 Protection Likelihood from "Hard No" (0%) to "Oh My, Let's Take a Look at This" (2%).
9. Lucas Erceg looks for his fourth straight solid appearance (1.50 ERA in 12.0 innings with 12 Ks) and the Shuckers aim for a second straight win: 1 - Hamilton - SS 2 - Howell - 3B 3 - Mitchell - CF 4 - Fry - C 5 - Palma - DH 6 - Longo - LF 7 - Lutz - RF 8 - Spanberger - 1B 9 - Devanney - 2B X - Erceg - P
10. Ernesto Martinez returns to the lineup after sitting out yesterday’s loss and Jefferson Figueroa makes his 4th start of the year (2nd at Carolina), as the Mudcats need to keep winning with Down East and Salem chasing us for a playoff spot:
11. Joey Wiemer’s the hottest hitter on the planet (1.595 OPS over last 83 PAs) and he’s leading the Timber Rattlers back to the .500 mark (presently 47-51): 1 - Wiemer - DH 2 - Valerio - 2B 3 - Warren - 3B 4 - Gray - CF 5 - Zamora - SS 6 - McGee - 1B 7 - L. Castillo - RF 8 - Rios - C 9 - Rodriguez - LF X - Bennett - P
12. Nashville’s in a rut (lost 10 of 12), but Josh Lindblom is going for his 2nd straight win after striking out 12 in 6.2 innings last time out:
13. All the more reason why we: - will probably protect Justin Bullock in the Rule V Draft - hope for a full recovery of Max Lazar and not to lose him in Rule V - hope for a full recovery of Clayton Andrews and not to lose him in Rule V - face a possibly tricky situation with Carlos Luna - he might be a free agent; if not a FA, then he's available for Rule V; he might be injured after leaving early last night
14. After winning Game One earlier today, the Timber Rattlers make three lineup changes for Game Two, bringing in LG Castillo, Nick Kahle and Antonio Pinero: 1 - Wiemer - RF 2 - Valerio - 2B 3 - Warren - 1B 4 - Gray - CF 5 - Zamora - SS 6 - L. Castillo - DH 7 - Rodriguez - LF 8 - Kahle - C 9 - Pinero - 3B X - Matulovich - P
15. First rounder Sal Frelick continues his torrid start (1.049 OPS in 59 PAs at Carolina). He and the Mudcats try for an 8th consecutive win:
16. Matt Lipka has been a nice addition to the team (.870 OPS in 154 PAs, with 14 SBs, principally playing center field). He leads the Sounds, which try to bounce back from a close loss yesterday:
17. David Hamilton has hit safely in 18 of his last 19 games. He leads the Shuckers, which aim to stop a 3-game skid: 1 - Hamilton - SS 2 - Howell - RF 3 - Mitchell - CF 4 - Fry - C 5 - Longo - LF 6 - Lutz - DH 7 - Dillard - 1B 8 - Holt - 3B 9 - Cantrelle - 2B X - Luna - P
18. After one game was rained out yesterday, Wisconsin tries again for a doubleheader today. Freddy Zamora makes his High-A debut as the team seeks a 4th victory in a row: 1 - Rodriguez - CF 2 - Valerio - 2B 3 - Wiemer - RF 4 - McGee - 1B 5 - Gray - DH 6 - Warren - 3B 7 - Zamora - SS 8 - McClanahan - LF 9 - Rios - C X - Knarr - P
19. 19-year old Venezuelan Catcher Manuel Ruiz released by DSL Brewers-1. He had originally signed in July 2019 and got his first action this year. He'd played in 6 games this year, with 4 starts at Catcher, producing a slash of .250/.438/.688 in 16 plate appearances. Hopefully he has other exciting opportunities in life and/or baseball lined up. Good luck to Manuel.
20. Noah Zavolas was terrific in his last start (6 innings, 1 run, 7 Ks). He leads the Shuckers, which host Rocket City this week: 1 - Hamilton - SS 2 - Howell - 2B 3 - Mitchell - CF 4 - Palma - LF 5 - Fry - 3B 6 - Lutz - RF 7 - Spanberger - 1B 8 - Dillard - DH 9 - Diaz - C X - Zavolas - P
21. Tyler Black (Comp A 33rd overall pick) and Zack Raabe (8th round) make their Low-A debuts, as Carolina aims to extend its 6-game win streak, playing at Fredericksburg this week:
22. Daniel Vogelbach continues his rehab, as Nashville hosts Gwinnett this week:
23. It’s essentially a doubleheader for Wisconsin in Quad Cities today, playing the remaining 8.5 innings of Game One, then a 7-inning Game Two. Ashton McGee makes his High-A debut in the opener: 1 - Warren - 3B 2 - Gray - CF 3 - McGee - 1B 4 - Pinero - SS 5 - L. Castillo - RF (to lead off 2nd inning) 6 - Valerio - 2B 7 - Rodriguez - LF 8 - Kahle - C 9 - Wiemer - DH X - Castaneda - P {UPDATE: they’ve now updated the box score to indicate Wiemer batting in the 3 spot and McGee in the 9 spot}
24. More moves: - RHP Ryne Moore (18th round pick) assigned to ACL Blue - RHP Lun Zhao assigned to ACL Gold - LHP Ethan Small sent on rehab assignment to ACL Gold
25.
