  1. I didn’t mind losing Joe Gray Jr. in 2023, but I’m not pleased with what transpired today. Shane Smith was a top 3 pick (#1 overall actually), as expected. The only rational explanation I can imagine for leaving him unprotected is that there’s a secret, looming injury risk. Briceno seemed like a team leader on an incredibly young Mudcats’ team. In reality, he was still slightly underage for the level and posted an above-league average OPS (.685 vs. 661) without excessive luck (BABIP .309). Sure, Briceno is not likely to ever make the Majors (so few actually DO make it and he only hit 3 HRs in 2024), but he looked like someone worth keeping in the clubhouse and on the field for a while. Go make your families proud, gentlemen!
  2. In the minor league phase, we picked up RHP Zach Peek (Orioles) and OF Garrett Spain (Blue Jays), but lost INF/OF Miguel Briceno.
  3. I’d figured we may try to get a LHH catcher on a minor league contract or split contract: - Reese McGuire - Tucker Barnhart - Omar Narvaez (if we think we can fix him)
  4. I think our best hope is that Smith is selected by an incompetent organization who gives up on him too soon:
  5. While we await Jackson Chourio’s stint with Aguilas del Zulia (Venezuela), here are the Winter League stats-to-date of active Brewers: INF Andruw Monasterio - Caribes de Anzoategui - .825 OPS in 157 PAs, 18 RBIs, 7 SBs OF Hedbert Perez - Tiburones de la Guaira - .858 OPS in 88 PAs, 10 RBIs, 2 SBs INF Eduardo Garcia - Cardenales de Lara – 1.201 OPS in 19 PAs, 5 RBIs INF Daniel Guilarte - Caribes de Anzoategui - .584 OPS in 43 PAs, 2 RBIs Dominican League: INF Oliver Dunn (didn’t play this week) - Gigantes del Cibao - .322 OPS in 26 PAs, 1 RBI OF Bladimir Restituyo (his team has apparently been playing in the Titans of the Caribbean Series in Puerto Rico this week, so his league stats haven’t changed) - Aguilas Cibaenas - .267 OPS in 16 PAs Puerto Rico: RHP Justin Yeager - Indios de Mayaguez - 11.2 IP, 4 R, 9 H, 7 BB, 14 K, 5 Saves C Ramon Rodriguez - Senadores de San Juan - .795 OPS in 33 PAs, 1 RBI, 1 SB C Victor Torres - Senadores de San Juan - .000 OPS in 3 PAs, 1 RBI Mexico: LHP Jesus Broca - Algodoneros de Guasave – 12.2 IP, 6 R (4 ER), 10 H, 10 BB, 10 Ks
  6. I worry that Wednesday is Lose Shane Smith Day, forever replacing Lose Miguel Diaz Day.
  7. I was happy that the Cobra was on our side in this brawl. See him at the 3:47 mark. You don't want to upset that man. Congrats Mr. Parker!!
  8. Aren’t we just raising the price the Cubs will pay?
  9. Jeez - doesn't this mean that the Yankees and Diamondbacks (losing Bell, Pederson, Walker, Grichuk) now need to sign every decent position player?
  10. INF Eduardo Garcia started at shortstop in both ends of a doubleheader for Cardenales on Thursday, going 3-for-5 with a homer and two doubles before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the second game:
  11. INF Andruw Monasterio was finally back in action for Caribes after sorting out a visa issue:
  12. Jackson Chourio hit 12 homers in the derby semifinal, but only managed 6 in dropping the finale to Eugenio Suarez.
  13. Since Hope can drive a man insane, I can’t mentally process having over $27 million to spend on the likes of Bieber, Bohm and Santana. Heck, I’d be thrilled with just Bohm and Santana. Make it happen! After letting go respectable pitchers like Rea, Milner, Wilson, Shane Smith (yeah, I’m resigned to his selection on Dec 11), Paredes, Herget, Zastrzyny, White, Meeker, etc., then seeing the rich deals just signed by Montas and Boyd, I’m not expecting anything on the pitching front.
  14. The various Winter Leagues keep rolling along, with Hedbert Perez still putting up solid numbers: Venezuelan League: INF Andruw Monasterio (still idle while renewing US visa) - Caribes de Anzoategui - .884 OPS in 133 PAs, 15 RBIs, 7 SBs OF Hedbert Perez - Tiburones de la Guaira - .851 OPS in 82 PAs, 7 RBIs, 1 SB INF Daniel Guilarte - Caribes de Anzoategui - .584 OPS in 43 PAs, 2 RBIs Dominican League: INF Oliver Dunn (didn’t play this week) - Gigantes del Cibao - .322 OPS in 26 PAs, 1 RBI OF Bladimir Restituyo - Aguilas Cibaenas - .267 OPS in 16 PAs Puerto Rico: RHP Justin Yeager - Indios de Mayaguez - 9.0 IP, 4 R, 7 H, 6 BB, 12 K, 4 Saves C Ramon Rodriguez - Senadores de San Juan - 1.000 OPS in 22 PAs, 1 RBI, 1 SB C Victor Torres - Senadores de San Juan - .000 OPS in 3 PAs, 1 RBI Mexico: LHP Jesus Broca - Algodoneros de Guasave – 12.2 IP, 6 R (4 ER), 10 H, 10 BB, 10 Ks
  15. That Brewers team had easily the best record in the Majors that year, a .653 winning percentage (Tigers second at .605)…in games that Paul Molitor played (77-41). The team was 18-2 when Molitor suffered his first injury of the season in late April and didn’t bother calling up the guy who’d just hit 4 consecutive homers in AAA ball.
  16. We may be hoping to land a left-handed hitting catcher with MLB-caliber defense on a minor league contract or split contract, e.g.: - Reese McGuire - Tucker Barnhart - Omar Narvaez (if we think we can fix him)
  17. What about Langhorne, Seppings, Hostetler, Hodges and Gillis? Hopefully there’s another non-drafted gem in there.
  18. Closing my eyes and hoping for a Winkeresque bounce-back.
  19. Hold back the Great Luke?!? Dem’s fightin’ words! But yeah, I really hope he adapts and doesn’t fizzle out like Corey Ray or Mario Feliciano.
  20. Here’s a stats compilation update of our nine (9) remaining active Winter League players: Venezuelan League: INF Andruw Monasterio (idle while renewing US visa) - Caribes de Anzoategui - .884 OPS in 133 PAs, 15 RBIs, 7 SBs OF Hedbert Perez - Tiburones de la Guaira - .820 OPS in 68 PAs, 5 RBIs, 1 SB INF Daniel Guilarte - Caribes de Anzoategui - .675 OPS in 36 PAs, 2 RBIs Dominican League: INF Oliver Dunn - Gigantes del Cibao - .322 OPS in 26 PAs, 1 RBI OF Bladimir Restituyo - Aguilas Cibaenas - .286 OPS in 15 PAs Puerto Rico: RHP Justin Yeager - Indios de Mayaguez - 7.0 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 4 BB, 9 K, 3 Saves C Ramon Rodriguez - Senadores de San Juan - 1.367 OPS in 12 PAs, 1 RBI, 1 SB C Victor Torres - Senadores de San Juan - .000 OPS in 2 PAs Mexico: LHP Jesus Broca - Algodoneros de Guasave - 10.1 IP, 6 R (4 ER), 9 H, 7 BB, 8 Ks
  21. Thank you for highlighting a pioneer that I'd sadly never heard of. I'm sure this 1971 incident (Carty, Eye Damaged, Charges 3 Policemen Blackjacked Him) contributed to some down years, but he hit the cover off the ball from 1975-1978.
  22. OF Yhoswar Garcia has apparently exited Tibirones de La Guaira. I wonder if it’s he’ll hang around as a reserve. We’ll see.
  23. And RHP Dikember Sanchez has left Tiburones de La Guaira.
