  1. I'll never forget the Doorman and his wife chanting "SWEEP! SWEEP! SWEEP!" at the Cubs as they walked off the MP field in '04...
  2. No one's saying Braun's analysis isn't correct; it's whether it was appropriate as a teammate (and one who hadn't been quite stellar himself this year so far) to call out other team members about their specific play.
  3. The problems we're talking about here as far as any of us know have nothing to do with "focus," however. If Suppan and Julio and McClung and whoever were rookies whose performance was suffering from "lack of focus" (off field distractions, unprofessional manner, muted desire, etc), it'd be one thing. But that doesn't appear to be the case, however. Will yelling improve their vision, their mechanics, their ability to read batters or individual strike zones? No. Exactly! Yelling doesn't work when you're dealing with veterans who either a) desperately need the job (Julio) or b) know they have total leverage but are otherwise professional (Suppan). I don't think anybody's saying pros can't be yelled at; what I'm saying here is that I believe yelling won't solve any of the issues at hand and in fact be harmful to clubhouse chemistry in the long run. Nothing has given me the impression that the pitchers think their performance has been acceptable, so let the coaches coach, and leave the reaming out to the fans.
  4. "It's frustrating," said Braun. "If you don't make them swing the bat, you don't keep your defense in the game. You don't give yourself a chance to get anybody out. It's not just the walks. We're falling behind every hitter." That's awfully specific for a cliche. Can you imagine if, after the Brewers lost a series of low-scoring games where Braun and Hart struck out several times (just try real hard to imagine!), one of the pitchers said, "If you keep swinging at that high fastball or that slider, you're not gonna give your pitchers a chance to help you win the game. And it's not just the being caught stealing. We're falling behind every count when they swing at that first pitch." I don't think it's a sign of discord (indeed, maybe the locker room is so tight that he feels comfortable saying it), I just think it's kinda inappropriate.
  5. Has being yelled at ever improved your focus as a grown man? Or would it just make you resentful and foster a bad atmosphere in the workplace? These guys aren't children--they're not going to be scared of hearing Macha getting loud and as such improve "their focus." I mean, I guess I'm confused as to what you think they're focusing on now if not painting the corner--a burger after the game? The girl in the second row?
  6. Agreed, Senator...I kind of like how he tried to say it was the entire team, not just the pitching, but he was awfully specific in his complaints about the pitching. Maybe he assumes Julio won't be around much longer--all the same, pretty inappropriate, I think.
  7. Strangely this only seems to affect the Brewers and not their opponents...talk about your microclimates! I don't know how I feel about the helpfulness of an "eruption"; I'm more upset that Doug and/or Mark A thought this staff as presently constituted was worthy of making a run in these precious few years we're gonna have the majority of our young offensive guns (I know, I know...).
  8. Oh man, I'm stuck with this one on Gameday and this is the only thing that could drive me further up the wall than Manny's performance this inning. I mean, it's not like they're playing 20 straight days starting today or anything.
  9. Ah, OK. I know who The Maniac is now, but the guy I'm thinking of definitely isn't him...this guy sits (or sat, I haven't been at a game at MP in close to three years http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif ) in the club seats and was HUGE and very hairy: beard, long hair, etc. Occasionally they'd show him on the board as well but he wasn't as, uh, demonstrative as The Maniac, just very, uh, "present." Always present. I'm sure someone knows who I'm talking about, but maybe he doesn't belong by virtue of me having to explain. I can also understand disliking the Iceman's schtick (and again, I haven't been to MP in years now and only saw about 10+ a year there when I lived in the Midwest), but I think it's hard to deny his addition to the humorous, tongue-in-cheek, ("$7?!? Ripoff!!!"), and yes, beery atmosphere of a summertime baseball crowd in Milwaukee. Anyway, another second for BtA...besides a longtime font of often-hard-to-get info for me, this site has really been a home away from home in more ways than one. Well done, to say the least, and Respect.
  10. Wow, you're a better man than I am...I certainly would have said something whiny and/or stupid to them at some point during the game. It's kinda funny how they kept to the party line though! Glad to hear they're good guys.
  11. Wow, glad I was out and missed this one. Sounds like a real wall-puncher.
  12. The Iceman rules...didn't know he had a nickname until now though! I wasn't sure if he was a fan legend as a vendor, but the fact that he goes to Maryvale makes me think he really cares about the team and knows and appreciates the "fan experience."
  13. The Maniac is the big bearded guy who sits up in the club seats, right? The Doorman and his wife are my favorites, jut because I can always spot them (and they've been there for what seems like forever), and their moods and demeanors usually match mine! The Doorman had this look on his face during Sunday night's Cubs' game that was like looking in a mirror!
  14. Man, that's a shame. I've got a great poster of the '76 Brewers on my wall that features caricatures of the team, and he's there interviewing Alex Grammas while wearing a plaid jacket. Some of my earliest memories. And, of course, the Fan Fair! RIP, Merle.
  15. If you go, clean the bugs out of those suckers!
  16. When I heard that crack, I thought yesterday was repeating itself. I'll take it, Big Red Now let's get something across here
  17. Here we go again! HBP-R or BB-R? You know it's gonna be one (at least!) of them!
  18. Yeah, this makes me think it really was about "pressure," which is still baffling to me when you're talking about a guy who started a playoff game last year. Yo knows who he is and what's expected of him this year. Frustrating.
  19. All my relatives in Vernon County do this; most of them hold on to them for themselves but a few sell them. My wife and I used to go up one weekend a year just to do it for her own edification, I personally could never stand the taste.
  20. Yep. Out-hitting teams but the offense can't keep up with the antics of the pitching staff. At least some of our big bats are down right now...hopefully soon we can win some of these slugfests.
  21. Haha what Beats the Kendall DP though...at first I thought we'd get an unlikely one
  22. Yeah, I hear you, the main problem I had with the walks was the aforementioned Kendall sighting we're about to experience!
  23. JJ has looked better the last few days, had hit a jack earlier in the game, and had better numbers against Weathers than Prince or Braunie, I didn't mind seeing him there.
