  1. From Ballpark Digest: JJ Cooper:
  2. The CBA limits how much you can reduce a salary by. It is 20% of the previous season or 30% of the average of the previous 2 seasons and he could still challenge in arbitration. Any decrease more than that and they would have to non-tender him first and negotiate with him as a free agent.
  3. Sorry, my response did switch to BABIP. I can't defend my amplified statement though I still believe good defense is important. In 2019 per team per game the average number of ABs was 34.30, the average number of SOs was 8.81, the average number of HRs was 1.39, and the average number of SFs was 0.24. So the average number of BIPs was 24.34. All from https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/MLB/bat.shtml. For reference in 1999, the average number of BIPS was 27.17. That means on average the quality of defense comes into play 24.34 times per game. If a team was able to reduce the BIPs by half through strikeouts that would be an average of 20.98 strikeouts per game.
  4. I would argue the opposite. With how few balls are in play good defense is amplified. I'm trying to wrap my head around that. How is good defense amplified when there are fewer chances? If 100 defensible balls are put into play, and the defense makes 90% of the plays, there are 10 that aren't made. If by striking out an additional 50 of those 100 with no defense involved, and the defense still makes 90% of the remaining defensible plays, then only 5 plays aren't made. So defense is minimized, not amplified. The decrease in balls in play isn't because of strikeouts solely. It's also the result of pitchers inducing flyouts/groundouts and an increase in home runs. Even if in the shift a player still has to be able to make the play.
  5. Tom Hardicourt today: Tom had retweeted Matt Eddy's tweet:

  7. The deal is actually 10 years and then another 5 if the Brewers extend their lease for another 5 years. So get ready for new stadium talk.
  8. maybe you could create something like the WWE network? Obviously the brewers cannot create their own network with 24/7 programming. If they did create something that one could watch on their phones / computer or smart TV and have on demand content, it could work. The issue is that you have to make money somehow. Right now everyone that has cable pays for the brewers game whether you watch them or not. Now you are decreasing your customer base by just getting money from baseball fans. Also you have a massive upfront cost to create the app. I would think you need all MLB teams to work together to create one app for all teams. They would have to partner with the Bucks and Admirals and anybody else willing to be able to do that. MLB.tv and the MLB app is everything you are talking about. So if the Brewers created their own app they would be competing against that.
  9. Yes, they would.
  10. MLB.tv revenue is split amongst all the teams unlike the TV deals.

  12. Not a huge surprise but Nats let Hagerstown know they will not their Single A affiliate anymore. https://www.heraldmailmedia.com/sports/nationals-end-affiliation-with-suns/article_8ccf83de-2c5a-11eb-aae4-97eafc32de4d.html
  13. Okay then. Obviously see where I was mislead above. Sadly, I've found you can't trust one source for arb status, # of options, service time, contact $, etc. They all align for like 10 days in December during the Winter Meetings and then go to hell by the end of the season.
  14. Their deal ended after this season so they will have to negotiate something before the start of the 2021 season. I'm sure they already are working on it. One note with Sinclair: In the news articles talking about how they lost money on the Fox RSNs and had to write down their value by half it mentions that when the Royals renegotiated their deal with Sinclair they received part ownership. Sinclair has also indicated they are open to similar arrangements. I'm thinking - or hoping at least - that a similar situation could happen with the Brewers.
  15. MLBTradeRumors had him as arb eligible too with a $2.1MM – $3.9MM range. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/11/orioles-designate-renato-nunez-for-assignment.html https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/10/projected-arbitration-salaries-for-2021.html
  16. I get the bad blood with Nashville but it was the Brewers toward the Nashville ownership, correct? So the Brewers requesting - and getting - Nashville as their AAA affiliate really would be a FU to Nashville's ownership since they no longer have a say in affiliations. So from the Brewers perspective the history shouldn't really be a thing? Out of the box thinking - MLB's requirements for affiliation are about facilities for players and not attendance. Any chance Wisconsin or even Beloit get elevated to AAA?
  17. JJ Cooper updated his link with the Mariner sites. He found it in the job postings for coaches. LoA-Tacoma, HiA-Arkansas, AA-Everett, AAA-Modesto So watch for job postings?
  18. I was just searching for this to post it. It is much easier to read and he includes links to some of his sources.
  19. More: JP Hoornstra: The Dodgers will be affiliating with a High-A team in Spokane, Washington, as part of the broad changes coming to minor league baseball. An official announcement is expected on/around Dec. 1: buff.ly/2UFBtDh JJ Cooper: https://twitter.com/jjcoop36/status/1329546170675376130 JJ Cooper added this when retweeting JP Hoornstra's tweet: This is big because from all of my reporting, the Dodgers were quite happy in the Midwest League and Great Lakes. Them going out West shuffles a lot as far as HiA lines up. Robert Harding: .@SenSchumer was in my hometown (Medina) today and said he's working to keep the Auburn Doubledays and Batavia Muckdogs as Single-A minor league baseball teams. It's going to be tough. To make that happen, Auburn would have to become a full-season team. JJ Cooper: JJ Cooper added this when he retweeted Robert Harding's tweet: Schumer has worked hard to keep MiLB teams from N.Y. in affiliated ball. I would agree with the statement here that says that would be very tough to do. Batavia and Auburn are in small markets. The two have ranked at the bottom of lg. attendance each of the past 5 years. The Great Lakes Loons are in Midland, MI. EDIT 1: New tweet from JJ Cooper A source with direct knowledge tells me that the report of the Dodgers affiliating with Spokane for high Class A in 2021 is incorrect.
  20. I have watched that very thing develop more and more over the past 30 years in organizations and corporations. The only conclusion that I can come up with, is that executive management create additional levels of executive management so when things go wrong, there are more people to point the finger at and deflect blame to them. Maybe but some of it is the younger generations in the workforce aren't happy with just a salary bump every year. They expect to be promoted or they start job hopping. The loyalty to the company our parents/grandparents had went away when it was clear most corporations don't reciprocate that loyalty.
  21. It has to do with the contracts they sign and the rules around hiring from other teams when it is a lateral move versus a promotion. Teams can't stop other teams from interviewing for a Assistant GM for a GM position but they can stop them from interviewing a GM. Unless they fire Schlesinger they can't promote Stearns any more.
  22. Healy was sent to AAA and he elected minor league free agency. My guess, they tender Hader, Woodruff, and Narvaez and maybe Pina. Unless they can reduce the salary by enough through a contract, and that has a big caveat, everyone else is traded or non-tendered. The caveat is there is a clause in the CBA that limits how much they can reduce a salary by, which is 20% of the previous year's salary or 30% of the previous 2 years' salary. So with someone like Knebel they would still have to pay ~$4M which I don't think they do. I don't remember if it was here, Twitter, or somewhere else I saw this but for Knebel to come back with a $1M salary he would have to be non-tendered and become a free agent first.
  23. It's mostly about Schlesinger and what happened on the business side. He dodges any player payroll questions. They are trying to model different scenarios on how 2021 may play out and what that means financially. They did as much as they could do to cut expenses but they still had to let some people go. They rely on game revenue for 30-40% of their income so they did operate in the red (not in the article was the fact there was no revenue sharing this year either). Season tickets renewals are at about 90% for next year. In 2020 all fan engagement declined - viewership, social media, etc. All sports teams had engagement issues. He was disappointed they couldn't do the 50th anniversary celebration.
  24. From Jon Morosi ( ): Kim Ng has 3 World Series rings. She made 8 postseason appearances as an executive. She was assistant GM of the #Yankees and #Dodgers, then spent a decade in the Commissioner’s office. Objectively speaking, she has one of the greatest résumés of any first-time GM in @MLB history. From Céspedes Family BBQ ( ): active GMs/presidents of baseball ops who were still in or just graduated college when Kim Ng had her first GM interview in '05: Mike Elias Scott Harris Derek Falvey Erik Neander David Stearns an outrageously long time to be qualified and not get a chance. today is a good day!
