We get requests for merch, we should probably just get on it. The problem with merch is management and opportunity cost. But I'm adding it to the list of things to seriously consider again. Over the past several months, I've been automating a ton of daily tasks to free up more time for stuff like this.

Thank you for giving us money. 😁 But more seriously, expect big changes to caretaking, in a positive way. That's part of what we're still arguing about behind the scenes.

This is absolutely our feeling as well. We're circling the wagons, so to speak. Where we once spent time creating dedicated, specialized posts for social media, it's all automated now and we put that effort into community-building.

This is pretty accurate, though we tested premium membership and the numbers didn't move significantly enough to justify continuing to pay for it.

X and Facebook, far and away the two largest social channels, have spent the past 3-4 years choking out any post with a link in it. Your normal posts (sans link to your content) appear as usual, but if there's a link in your post, that reach plummets. Facebook and X simply don't show it. Using fake numbers for an example. Let's say you have 1,000 followers. You post something that's just text, no link. 200 of your followers see it. You post the identical thing, but attach a link. 20 of your followers see it. The ratio has increased incrementally over the past four years. Now we're literally getting less than 10% of the traffic we used to get from these platforms. Once we would bring in six figures of clicks per month, now it's like 50k a month.

This is actually something we've been talking about for a couple of years. Implementation and scope is the sticking point, and then we got close enough to this redesign that we had to temporarily shelve it. But expect to see this at some point.

Our google traffic is decent. It could be better, and I'm going to take a look at the tech side during this redesign, but our content is also NOT written around SEO as it often it with those platforms you just listed (other than MLB.com, they just have massive authority on the subject). And we won't be writing to SEO any time soon, I've always believed that's short-sighted, and given how google is screwing publishers right now, that approach is proving correct.

So on chrome when you open a new tab, the recommended articles are dominated by RTB? Want to be clear I’m understanding the situation. And our traffic here is good, better than most of our other sites. It’s just that the tech giants have turned the publishing market toxic. Their behavior has been abhorrent, frankly. We’ve been given a fast lesson in never relying on anyone but ourselves because corporate behemoths are vile.

This website is getting a little long in the tooth. The basic design dates back to 2021, when our only site was Twins Daily. Since that redesign, we've added nine (!!!!) sites and crammed in more new features than we can count. It's time for a ground-up rethink of everything about this website, and we need your help to do it right. A lot has changed over the past half-decade, especially for independent publishers like us: social media has throttled our reach to near-zero, Google is replacing search results with AI summaries, and economic uncertainties continue to loom over us all.
