  1. Would appreciate it if one of the Brewer Fanatic minor league gurus could throw out a scouting report on Thompson. Signed out of indy ball, he's thrown just over 11 innings for the Shuckers & allowed 1 hit. He's 29, so you would think a bump to Nashville could be forthcoming sooner rather than later if they're serious about him.
  2. In the days before the DH in the NL that's something we've done. String of games vs AL clubs, bring up someone to DH. Since then the NL has added the DH, and we've seen Hiura try to hit lefties. I imagine Perkins will be here until they deem Taylor ready.
  3. LH Justin Wilson is expected to be able to pitch sometime in July. That could be another lefty option for the pen that might keep Andrews in N'Ville. Don't shoot the messenger.
  4. I seem to remember Ted Simmons would DH some days when he didn't catch. Bottom line, Counsell is one of those managers who, when he gives his starting C a day off, wants it to be a TOTAL day off. Which knowing him isn't surprising. I don't have a dog in the fight except that I like to see Voight get some ABs to see if he can get in a groove. Wiemer had a couple ABs today where he looked not-at-all ready for big league pitching. Yet he also homered & doubled. As talented as he is defensively I like the idea of him getting 4 ABs a game from the 8 or 9 hole. His throw to 3B today was some impressive stuff. Didn't even set himself up perfectly momentum-wise and still almost picked up an assist.
  5. I actually still see a semblance of guys trying to go oppo. The putting the ball in play part, totally agree. Without looking at the numbers, it also seems like they aren't walking as much as earlier, too.
  6. My oversimplification is that like Ned Yost used to say, starting pitching is your momentum. Failed ABs aside, the starts in the last 4-5 games have been subpar with tonite maybe being the worst. Offensive shortcomings? Sure. All the more reason you can't keep playing from behind. Also, you were building some momentum by coming back, you get a leadoff double in the 8th, and Adames promptly turns in a horrible AB. Things just seemed to turn southward from that point on.
  7. Not that he'll be out there every day like he is now, but that's what I anticipate. We're still about run prevention and the way folks are rotating around like a volleyball team isn't helping that. Once they get a little healthier hopefully that will change.
  8. That's what I'm expecting. Still, I applaud him for the commitment.
  9. Cousins looks the same to me. He can be dominant if he can get ahead in the count. Didn't do enough of that tonite but managed to turn in a scoreless outing. Wiemer looked bad at the plate tonite. But let's remember he was ticketed for AAA at the beginning of the season & is now being thrown out there every day. That's a tough position to be in & still keep your head above water. I'm thinking/hoping at least one of Frelick or Taylor will be here in maybe a couple weeks. I think Joey benefits from sticking primarily in RF.
  10. Yeah. I was actually surprised he sent him up in the ninth once Yelich was retired.
  11. I see he's walked four in 5 innings so far this season. That won't cut it up here unless he gives up virtually no hits, which is what he's pretty much doing in Biloxi. I'll defer to you since it sounds like you've followed him more closely while I'm just looking at the numbers. Better slider command than FB command is interesting. Sounds like he might simply be a mechanical adjustment away.
  12. Guys in the clubhouse can now eat off paper plates & drink out of styrofoam cups without the danger of being preached to. Don't underestimate the value of that.
  13. In '21, '22 and so far this season he's thrown 41.2 innings and walked 33. I imagine it's due to him not having command of his off-speed stuff, which he'll need at least to some extent at the major league level even throwing 100+.
  14. Andrews has had a nice start to his season. But he threw a total of about 10 innings for the organization all of last year. He's also left-handed, which brings into question exactly what they have in mind for him. JMO but I think there's more "prove it" innings in his future. If he continues to do well I could see him as another LH option but I don't know about anything more substantial. I think Uribe is still a ways off but I'd love to be wrong about that.
  15. No sense in defending Bushs' outing today, obviously. I was pulling for him because he's filling an important role--whether it's the 7th or 8th--and there aren't a lot of other options. Varland looked promising but isn't available right now. Cousins needs to re-establish himself. Houser is being stretched out. Peguero had a nice day but you certainly need to see more. Despite what happened when we acquired Adames, substantial trades this time of year are rare. And no amount of struggling is going to make Cam Robinson or Uribe any more ready than they are (aren't). Usually, when fans start b****ing about a reliever, it's a high-leverage guy who's had success or he wouldn't be in the role. Like it or not, teams give guys like that more opportunities to "get right" than fans would. Bush certainly needs to work ahead & locate much, much better. He was 0-1 to Turner & basically threw him a 3-0 pitch. On a different topic-----it would be nice if your staff ace could take the mound w/o needing to take 50-some pitches to get his act together. The 8th inning rightfully overshadowed it but Burnes needs to be better.
  16. There are obvious holes to Taylors' game but this is why he's a little more valuable than many realize. Wiemer looks OK in CF. In RF he's terrific. Same with Anderson in RF as opposed to 3B. Miller didn't make what was an admittedly tough play tonight playing 3B, and it cost them. Taylor (if available) keeps other folks where they belong if you want your best defensive team out there. Sounds like TT will be available before Frelick. Watching this unfold will be interesting.
  17. I stopped watching Sportscenter many moons ago, then was flipping around one day just as it was starting. Thought I'd give it a try. I made it through maybe 30 seconds of self-promoting & "everyone listen to how clever I am" preening from whoever the host was before turning it off. I watch ESPN if there's a live event I want to see. The rest of their programming is painful.
  18. Yeah, I agree. I felt the game kind of hinged on that. Wiemer on 2nd with no outs & the top of the order coming up. Inning ends with Wiemer still on 2nd. That didn't help. Yelich is just confounding. He contributes---he did early tonite---but it's so incredibly odd to see the # of times he gets ahead 2-0, 3-1 & fails. I've seen a lot to like from Wiemer. But young man, you gotta take 2-0 when down by 2 runs & no one on base. I know, Jansen most likely isn't walking him. Still.
  19. Did he say anything about being blessed by the 2-3 weeks he spent as a Badger?
  20. I'm not a big apologist for Yelich & some of the pitches he swings through, but agree totally in this case. Hell of a tough pitch.
  21. I was OK with that decision. Miller is a contact guy who runs real well. Good qualities to have in a bases loaded situation. Just didn't work out.
  22. Really happy for Bush. Good to see him crawl out from beneath the bus that a lot of people threw him under. Turang is just so heady, such a gamer on both ends of the floor, to borrow a hoops term. I even loved his thought process when he popped up the bunt. Great idea, just poor execution.
  23. I thought Davis was slowly starting to turn a corner, but if all are healthy his chances for getting on the field weren't great in '23. I was thinking maybe he'd get some run in the bowl game, but that didn't really happen. Would not be surprised if he wound up at a MAC-level type program & was productive there.
  24. Was it risky to send Tellez? IMO no because you had a 3 run lead & there were two outs. Certainly he was throwoutable there with Kelenic winding it up but you have to force them to make a play. They couldn't. Plus, when you look at the replay Tellez was jogging to 3B, then turned it on when the SS whiffed. If he runs hard from the start he might make it even w/o the drop. Even if Burnes is pronounced good to go, I suspect they push him back.
  25. I absolutely love Mitchell single-handedly creating the winning run with his legs. If he ever gets ahold of the contact issues, the sky's the limit as to how he can impact games. I don't care if it's Machado, Arenado or Brooks Robinson at 3B. In the correct situation the bunt should always be in the back of his mind.
