Tue. 8/6 - A Bit Much

Makes you appreciate the depth of talent throughout the system. It wasn't long ago an 18-yr-old putting up more than acceptable numbers in low-A would be heralded by folks who follow the farm. Now he's kinda flying under the radar. Damn, I love the depth they've built. -

Frankly, he's the guy I'd call on if Milwaukee needed to dip down for a catcher (IF we only had two C's & IF one of them had to go on the IL for a spell). In the mold of a Manny Pina or a Marty Maldonado. An underappreciated luxury in the system. -
Better wording on my part would be "I believe that's his primary role if he returns". There would be enough LHP starts that we'd see the others as well.

Since the deadline I expected Black to eventually return. Three 1B is just a little less silly than three catchers, but the DH role is open for him w/Yelich IL'ed. Was hoping for someone having a need for a catcher pop up at just the right time a la Alex Jackson (or us needing to acquire Caratini), but no such luck.

Mitchell profiles to me as a guy that can do a little bit of everything, now that his plate discipline issues have improved. I don't have major concerns long-term about Turang, but either Mitchell or Frelick leading off right now isn't a bad idea.

Yeah, in the case of Turang I think part of what's missing is not being as selective as he was earlier & chasing out of the zone more than he had been. One of his hallmarks earlier was getting 2-strike hits, which by definition puts him deeper into the count. @Jake McKibbinbrought up some good stuff in the article. To boil it down I think it's an age-old case of adjusting, adjusting to the adjustment, adjusting to the adjustment of the adjustment..............I'm not nuts about any of the other leadoff options as I don't care for Chourio in that spot. Maybe Frelick or Mitchell.

The "it was hot" & "3rd time through the order" arguments can be somewhat leaned on. But I was fine with the way he worked Abrams earlier, and Yepez swings from the right side. He needed two more batters at minimum, and a chance to work through the inning depending on how the first two hitters went. No, he probably wasn't going to go through the order a third time successfully, but I'm talking 2 or three hitters, not the entire order. IMO the bullpen being fresh & day off tomorrow are bad reasons. There is nothing that says you need to go to the bullpen just because you can, and we've been hearing a lot about them being overworked. So give yourself a chance to have to use one less arm that day by going a little further with someone who hadn't given up a run since the 1st inning. "Devin has to pitch today" was a silly thing to bring up. It's not like Myers was throwing a complete game. I do agree with him saying Milner didn't have the best of luck. The walk could've turned out better, could've gotten a swing on a different day. And the swinging bunt was typical.

One more snippet I'd like to add. From what I saw today, Contreras & Adames had six pretty bad ABs out of their eight total trips to the plate. That has to get better. Contreras had TWO 3-1 counts (one 3-0 actually) his first two times up & both ended with pop flies to the opposite field. When you combine that with Willy's patented strikeouts while seeing maybe one pitch in the zone (if that) you're going to struggle.

If you mean helping offensively RIGHT NOW, he probably is, if you're talking regular ABs. If he makes it back up here he has a regular LH DH role available that Yelich vacated. Earlier when he was here, some teams had fewer late-inning setup men than we had first basemen. If recalled, he should just be plugged in to the DH spot & see what happens.

If there IS such a mandate, then they're going to HAVE to rely on him & everyone else in the pen. He's had a subpar year, certainly. But his last, I dunno, 5 or 6 outing before today have been good. But I thought Myers made some nice pitches to Abrams, & Yepez is not someone I want a lefty pitching to. Should've gone at least two more hitters.

In his limited PT since his ML debut, Mitchell has hit fairly well, just not able to stay on the field. Actually, it took a couple months for Chourio to start to hit.

I'm sure it had nothing to do with pitch count. This was a one run game, the game in Detroit he had a huge lead. But yeah, I wanted him to stay, too. I get the reasoning, I just didn't agree with it.

Not necessarily agreeing with Murphy here, but he wasn't banking on a DP grounder on either of the next two hitters after Hoskins, and if Frelick was still at 1B w/two outs probably would've run then. Turang hit into the DP, which usually doesn't happen. Ruiz is about avg in throwing out runners, but that gets a bump due to Finnegan being, for a closer, very good at holding runners & preventing steals. Like pulling Myers, it's one of those things where you can see what he's thinking, but the way things are going right now it'll probably blow up in his face no matter what he does.

I get why he did it. Third time through the order thing, & mostly LHH coming up. But I was unhappy the moment I saw Myers in relax mode in the dugout & knew he was done. We're developing a starter here, and he's at 64 pitches. I let him go at least through Yepez, and possibly finish the inning if you get beyond Yepez & there's no RISP. Had Milner thrown a scoreless sixth I still wouldn't have liked it.

Yeah, more than a little surprised he's still in Grand Chute. I've been a Brewers fan since they've been in Milwaukee, and have followed the minor league system as closely as I could, going back to the days when it was really tough to do so. Not to diminish the talent in Nashville & Biloxi because it's substantial, but if you limit yourself to the two A-level teams & rookie ball, at those levels I believe they've never had the concentration of talent they now possess. Never.

Boeve just looks like one of those guys that can roll out of bed & hit line drives. Still up in the air which corner is the better home for him but in the meantime boy is it fun watching him hit.

I thought he was OK, actually more than OK the 1st time through the order. Then not very good. I agree though that he should be allowed to settle in, let the catchers get comfy with him & give Hook & Henderson a chance to pry open the top of his head & pour some of their stuff in.

Trade Deadline hindsight

Something that needs to be kept in mind, for sure. Fortunately the decision-makers did. I also agree with @LouisElythat they may have been toying with the idea of dealing from the BP before the injuries swept in. -
Henderson, Crow & Smith are my top three & I agree with Henderson being a lock. Patrick, I guess his status could change if he finds his way up here & does well, but I get the feeling the organization doesn't think his stuff plays up to the big league level. This is by far the best season he's had. I like Collins but when it's all said & done I don't think they'll have room for him. I compare him to another recent casualty I liked---Cam Devanney. I'd say Clarke is possible but pretty doubtful.

He's been very, very.......odd is the only word I can think of. Since rejoining the team, his plate discipline is miles better than it was the last two years. Very encouraging. but absolutely nothing was jumping off his bat. Now he's starting to make harder contact, but sprinkled in are ABs like today---three down the middle, 94-95, and he looks like it's 1969 & a pitcher is hitting. I'm wondering if the wrong voices are getting in his ear, and he's becoming way too much of a guess hitter. Because there's more guessing in this lineup than I'd like to see.

Maybe not actually luck per se, but I go to the beginning of that mess. Arcia bounces one right at Ortiz, who is probably playing too deep & then to compound it backs up, causing him to throw from the OF grass even if he DOES make the pick, which he doesn't. Cost you two runs. I know Arcia isn't bunting & may not even know how to, but unless the hitter scorches one right at you there was no reason for him to be that far back & invite a funny hop. That's what allows them to be in & win so many games--taking the outs that are presented. But yes, the Peguero roller coaster was back down the hill today. Then after the damage is done, makes some really nice pitches to get Ozuna. Just frustrating.

I'm as close as you can get to 100% sure they turned over every stone on the beach. Not making this or that move doesn't mean they spent the last 6 weeks eating jelly beans w/their feet up on their desks. The starter you described above was commanding more than they were willing to give up in what was a sellers' market. And taking in all the factors, I can understand it. Maybe I'm wrong & someone could've been had for a price I'd have been OK with. But we'll never know that.

That's where Black being such a tragedy at 2B & 3B comes in. I think he'll find his way here in August, but he doesn't provide the versatility they love to have.
