  1. And 2.5 behind Philadelphia, which I never would've expected. Murphy keeps using words like 'relentless' & 'hungry' to describe this group. Enjoying a division lead & at the same time having the home-field carrot dangling in front of you for the playoffs fuels that. You need to turn in a real sustained run to stick with the other division leaders & my focus is still on the Central. But it's a nice carrot.
  2. COOTER? Where did he grow up, Crabwell Corners?
  3. There's also been attention paid to the subject of foreign students & NIL eligibility. The way I understand it, a student visa would be jeopardized if a student-athlete received payments & he could be subject to deportation. Now that we're in a world where college athletes are professionals, I assume this will be worked around one way or another, probably through a non-student visa of some type, perhaps even a green card.
  4. Thanks for the info, first I've heard of this!! After getting the Bosnian kid, they received a commitment from Hayden Jones, a guard from New Zealand that Kirk Penney had a substantial hand in. Now this. New assistant Lance Randall has a lot of international connections; that's bearing quite a bit of fruit so far. It sounds like Andrija Vukovic is having travel (visa?) issues & may not wind up in Madison. Perhaps Greppi is taking his spot.
  5. I'd keep Turang up top vs RHP for now despite his admitted struggles. But if they move away from him Frelick IMO is the best choice. Maybe Mitchell (someday) if he gets the swing-and-miss a little more under control. I didn't research this so I might be wrong, but it seems like when Turang was hitting he was seeing a lot more pitches, going deeper into counts.
  6. Eh, Suter is fresher on everyones' memory banks. And he DID pluck a lot of carrion lol.
  7. Hopefully just getting a blow. Luis Pena stole two more bases today, giving him 39, to go with 36 RBI in 43 games. For someone to be just a little under one per game in those two stats---I mean, a video game featuring something like that would be panned for being too unrealistic.
  8. Forgot about '83, he was even more of a scavenger that year. Guys coming into a game in the 6th or 7th inning & winning that many games was a rarity at that time. In an era when W-L records meant a lot more for a pitcher, it's easy to understand why he took the good-natured abuse.
  9. Slaton was given that moniker decades before Suter. He was a long-time starter, then after they traded for Pete Vuckovich & decided to make a starter out of Bob McClure he went to mostly a middle-inning/setup role, starting seven games in '82 & none in '83. He then went on to start quite a bit for the Angels. He won ten games in '82, a number of them out of the bullpen which is what gave him the nickname, I suspect hung on him by Vuckovich or Gorman Thomas. You're right, he was very valuable. It was a real coup when they were able to get Oglivie for him, then after a year in Detroit get him back via FA.
  10. Ah, The Vulture. A master of picking up wins out of the bullpen & an unsung hero of the '82 team.
  11. I'll guess Made has the best chance of seeing a full season in Carolina, with Pena a close second & another strong possibility. Part of the equation might involve people like Adamczewski, Baez, Di Turi---will enough of them be clearing out & heading to Grand Chute? Also would like to hear if anyone has any background/info on Argenis Aparicio, the Venezuelan pitcher. Without having actually seen him, his numbers suggest someone who is pretty polished for a teenage hurler.
  12. Yes. If one of the four teams behind Milwaukee finds a way to go on a 12-3 run they'll probably separate from the other three.
  13. One award for each, and participation trophies for all the rest...........🏆
  14. Especially when there are other teams ahead of you or in a similar position that you need to deal with. Far from impossible but.........
  15. A lot of opinions here, and pretty much all of them have merit as there are so many different directions they could take. I think Ashby being dropped from the 40 is a real strong possibility, as well as Ross being released. Unless he suddenly gets religion w/regards to the command, and I mean to the extent none of us expect at this point in his career, I wouldn't even consider Misiorowski in 2024. If it's between the two IMO Yoho is a better option for the 40-man. I think a phantom IL stint would happen to Milner before he's simply released. But you have options from the left side--let's say they believe in Zastryzny or even Jay filling a role--that it's not out of the question. From the RH setup department, it looks like Payamps has firmly jumped over Peguero on the 'trust meter', so that increases the chances of Elvis' tour playing a short stint in Nashville (sorry, couldn't resist).😁
  16. The human body is a very intricate thing. You'd be surprised how easy it is to find something wrong with it that's IL-worthy if you look hard enough.
  17. The Mets OTOH must be gleeful. We've had more than our share of injuries to deal with but really, the stuff that's hit ATL this year, both position players & pitching, is unreal. The Metropolitans smell blood.
  18. Dillard just mentioned the Braves pitchers AVERAGED over 20 pitches per inning in the series. Love that. Do it in game one, bust up a BP for the duration. Montas----if he can get breaking stuff over early in the count, I think the cutter is not great but good enough to play off that, and he obviously throws the 4 seamer hard enough. Problem is he really doesn't seem to be set up to pitch that way. And the walks today were disappointing, and a little surprising. A lot of fun to have a day where it didn't really matter.
  19. Loved the effort the last two times we faced Sale AFA running up the pitch count. Hope to see more of that today as their BP has been pretty heavily used in the series.
  20. I knew he's had better success lately vs LHP but I never would've guessed that.
  21. If that happens, the team nutritionist should be DFA'd.
  22. If I had to pick out one positive from the last two days, it would be that Atlanta appears to be the site of the Welcome Back Joey Ortiz party. Also on the list is Perkins, of course. If anyone wanted to bet me that he'd have three hits from the right side in a game I'd have lost a lot of coin. Nice quiet approach, too, spraying the ball all over. So odd to watch Contreras & Adames look bad, put up monster numbers, then look bad again within a three game period. William, you were pasting balls to the right side all night on Tuesday. You go from doing that, to chasing stuff well off the plate INSIDE? Just weird. And no Vinny, Adames swinging 3-0 was NOT a good idea. All great ABs aren't base hits. Terrific job by Monasterio helping to move the line. When they face a LHP, the way the roster is constructed you pretty much have to play either Mitchell or Frelick. In that event it should always be Frelick, at least right now. Mitchell looking totally lost at the plate vs Sale was easily predictable. Baby steps for Peralta. I thought, even in the two run first, that his sequencing, pitch selection, command & location were much better. Pitch selection on the Riley HR, ummmm, no. Payamps looked good. Mears looked great.
  23. Sounds like a rough parallel to some of the things UW is doing/has done regarding the fan experience at the Kohl Center & Camp Randall. Not sure what their concept of an entertainment district would look like, but it sounds like a nice 'drawing board' idea.
  24. To answer the first question raised in the article, I'd say yes. If he stays healthy & makes more consistent contact He'll have some value even if he doesn't realize consistent power numbers. His raw BA & OBP are fine, enhanced by much, much better plate discipline. But he's still a work in progress, a guy the jury is still definitely out on. As alluded to by @Playing Catch, there are some really hittable pitches that he inexplicably swings through, oftentimes after working himself into a "hitters count". I certainly am not on board with him hitting 3rd like he did last night. But as long as we score ten runs I can live with it.😛
