  1. Amen for optimism. Why put yourself through hell sweating the small stuff when the team is in first place? For me the silver lining is the team's youth. Despite still learning how to play at this level the team has managed to stay above .500 and in first place. These bad stretches may actually help in the long run. If they go through a stretch like this and eventually work through it they will learn how to successfully work through tough stretches quicker in the future. With pretty much the entire team coming back next year it not only looks like a first place club this year but a legitamate contender for a while. For the first time in a long time the core they are building around have the potential to max out as a top level team.
  2. That's very nice of you. While I have no problem with killing squirrels and have even hunted them it is differant watching something frantically struggle to stay alive without doing something to help. Suffering is suffering and it is only humane to stop it when possible.
  3. It really depends on what your aspirations are. If a comfortable job with a limited ceiling is fine then why mess with a good thing? If you want to climb the ladder then you have to play the game. More money and better company also involves higher expectations. There is nothing wrong with liking an easy job and if you earn enough money at your current job be happy and enjoy the life you have outside of work. If you are the type that places a high priority on your carreer it sounds like you may have to bite the bullet and take on the bigger challenge. It may also be wise to look at each company's history of "right sizing". If the one you are going to has a history of hiring then firing a couple years later tread carefully.
  4. Should warn you there is smoke in the roasting process itself. That was not the aroma I was talking about. If you have a vent on your stove that works fine. Otherwise if the wind is right point it out a window. Doing it outside is preferable in the summer. Any questions about it feel free to ask. I'm no expert but I have roasted my own for about 10 years.
  5. I don't know if anyone else roasts their own coffee but if you do I found a great place to find a large variety of green beans. Not only do they offer good beans but the website is very helpful in sorting the type of bean you might want. I've tried about 20 differant types. All of which match pretty well with the reviews they gave them. If you love good coffee and don't roast your own I highly suggest trying it. Beans start to lose their flavor in a few days. Once you start it would be hard to go back to anything store bought. Even the gourmet stuff takes a back seat to fresh roasted. If you are interested the site also has roasters and pretty much everything you need to get started. The aroma of fresh beans itself is enough to make you change what you drink now. www.coffeebeancorral.com/
  6. sorry mothership but 25-30 tops isn't very good. I get that in mixed driving with most of it coming from city driving. Last I checked when I drove only hwy I got 40. That was real mpg not the inflated dealer rating. The real problem with everyone driving short busses is it effects all of us who drive normal sized vehicles. Air quality and gas prices alike. It is funny how people complain about the high gas prices and live 100 miles away from the main place they drive to though isn't it?
  7. He made the decesion he was going to get drunkl get high and drive around Not to nit oicj but he had dope in the car and I don't think they have determined he had actually smoked it that night so far. The lawyer may have decided the bar knew he was too drunk to drive because they offered him the cab. If I'm a lawyer I certainly would use the offer as evidence they knew him to be too intoxicated to drive. Then agian if I'm the bar I'm going to say we offer that to anyone who had more than one drink of some such thing. Ulitmately there are very few things that are 100% one person's fault. Usually it is a combination of little factors that, combined, make a deadly combination. I kind of think his dad knows his son screwed up but would like to know all the factors that caused his death. If indeed the tow truck driver did not follow the perscribed proceedures he could have been a contributing factor. I drive about 30,000 miles a year much of it at night. I know for a fact sometimes lights appear further away than they are. He may have seen those lights but thought they were further away or moving instead of stationary. As Bwaz said we don't know all the circumstances. If indeed the driver was not following legal proceedures he could have caused the death of someone who had nothing to drink and simply didn't interpret the opitcal illusion correctly.
  8. The term arrested development comes to mind when I read about him.
  9. I'm not really talking about that, more about how people get attached to these specific animals (ie, name them, care for them, play with them, etc.) and then send them to the fights or the slaughterhouse. Got ya. I grew up on a beef farm and can tell you most animals never get named. Dairy cows sometimes do but then they are not going to the slaughter house anytime soon. Quite frankly most animals are not nearly as cute and cuddly as one would think. Having to clean up after them, feed them and chase them back in the yard at 2am when they get out makes one far less interested in saving them from the slaughter yard.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif As far as the varying degrees of suffering they have before d-day I know our animals had a far better life than nature would have provided for them though I cannot speak for all farmers treatment of animals. I also think there is some amount of differance between raising animnals for food, which is necessary, and raising them to abuse for entertainment.
  10. The differance between raising animals for slaughter and raising them for fighting is one lives without pain and suffering then dies relativly quickly and far less painfully than it's equivelant does in the wild. The other lives a life of pain getting beaten and beat up healing it's wounds only to be subjected agian to a beating. Animals die an every death has some amount of suffering I suppose. Not every animal lives a life of suffering before it eventually becomes dinner though. When it comes to food I look for free range chicken and the only veal I eat is from animals who were not mistreated before slaughter. (Yes there are ways to raise veal humanely. Unfortunately it's not quite as prime as the malnourished white stuff most people want.)
  11. cost" is the wrong word for abermueller... In this case cost has a subjective value. Obie would have been no worse than Lil' Ben, JDLR or Eveland were last year. So it did cost us one more person to try before CV and Zak Jack came up earlier than the Brewers would have liked them to.
  12. So, with the crummy pitching from Aquino of late, any chance Capellan gets called up soon? We'll know a lot more about how unhappy the Brewers are with Capellan's antics if they call up someone other than him. It'd be pretty telling if they called up Sarfate or traded for another journeyman.
  13. I still think he was a complete steal for Dan Kolb, and has already more than justified that trade. He sort of cost us Obermeuller as well. Kolb sucked so bad that Melvin did them a favor and traded Obie for Kolb who was not going to be tendered anyway. So he cost us two guys who couldn't pitch. At least they tried to pitch and didn't just take their ball and go home.
  14. If we are able to give 110%, I'm sure we can make turn this site into the steamy, smelly pile of worthlessness that we all want it to be. Shouldn't that be -110%? How can you expect to lose if you can't give anything less than zero? That's why Jose never got the stikeout record he failed to miss the ball too many times.
  15. Saw him once at the old Foxes stadium don't remember the name of it off hand I think it was Fox stadium or Pierce park but not sure. He was the best player I've seen go through Apple-ton. He was the main selling point that season, which was the last as the Foxes. That whole season was like a rebirth of minor league baseball in the city. It was the first time I remember actually hearing commercials about the team and people talking about the team. In some ways he was the usher to a new era in Apple-ton minor league baseball. The stadium was a dump and the team was basically an after thought in the Apple-ton sports scene. A-Rod was promoted pretty quickly to a higher level then to the majors in the same year. I remember thinking how similar the start of his career was to Yount's.
  16. When the optimists don't seee them losing many more than 100 it doesn't bode very well does it?
  17. Well at least groin injuries heal quickly and never linger.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  18. I wonder how much that team suffered behind the scenes without true ownership. Don't they look like a team that may have a antied up for a major league payroll but skimped on player development and scouting? It looks like it's at the point where it will take a Breweresque five to six year rebuild from top to bottom before they will have a chance.
  19. $16 million for a 43 year old who showed signs of his age last season can't really be all that attractive can it? Even if he is a sure fire hall of famer he had and ERA of 5 last year. His strikeouts dropped below 200 and his walks increased. If that doesn't lead one to believe there is little or nothing left in the tank I don't know what does.
  20. I don't know it the Orioles are the team but you make a real good point about the team needing to keep the minor league stocked. Jenkins would be one way to do that. On the other hand I'm not so sure we couldn't still use Lopez. He would be a good option in the pen. A team can never really have to many good arms there.
  21. I think I'd have liked Clerks 2 better if I hadn't seen Clerks so many times. It was ok but not nearly as fresh as Clerks was at the time.
  22. If you like the South Park guys check out Cannibal the Musical. Hilarious.
  23. A lot of catchers hit better later in their careers, Rivera has never been known as a hitter during his career. I see him regressing before Zaun. I would think if the first was true the 29 year old may just be hitting his stride. Why would he regress before Zahn?
  24. I still have serious doubts as to whether Rivera can actually hit. He swings at everything, and it seemed to me that teams realized that after a little while. I'd much rather have Zaun and have Rivera back in AAA. He hit for a 778 ops the last two weeks of the season playing everyday. If teams realized that it they sure didn't adjust very well to it. Even if we did want to demote him to AAA I doubt a player his age, at a position in demand, with better numbers than many major leaguers at his postion would accept the demotion. We either keep Rivera on the 25 man roster or lose him. All things being equal I'd rather have the proven commodity. Things aren't equal. In fact they are several million away from equal. So I'd vote for the $400,000 calculated risk if it meant we could get a better centerfielder or another pitcher.
  25. You've got the wrong senario Big Reed. If you have to put together a company picnic and are given half the money another person gets to do the same thing but whom ever puts together the best party gets promoted. In that senario are you going to pay more at an upscale gocery store for the same product because it's easier or closer to pick up on your way home? No you would get the best value for your dollar. If you had the choice of buying coke and not have money left over for hot dog buns or buy generic soda and get buns as well which is the better way to go? It's the same with small market teams. They simply don't, and never will, have the same budget. Yet they are expected to put out a comparable product. It is possible to do. It just takes smarter shopping and coupons.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
