  1. Did they make McClane into the terminator? I always liked the original "Die Hard" because he seemed mortal, but they seem to have progressed into this "he's a cyborg who will save the world" motiff.
  2. I posted this in another thread before I saw the Braun thread. I wouldn't be opposed to getting Prince some protection by batting Prince #3 and Braun #4 (a la Ortiz-Manny).
  3. I'm still concerned about who bats behind Prince, whether they start Gwynn or not. Would it be that weird to bat Prince #3 and Braun #4 (not that far removed from an Ortiz-Manny sort of thing). EDIT: I moved this question to the Braun thread because I think it would be better talked about there.
  4. A Washington Post Q&A from two years ago. 1. Can the Home Run Derby ruin a player's swing? This is a subject of much debate for it seems every year a handful of players who participate in the derby wind up in horrible slumps as soon as the second half starts. This year seems to be no exception. Bobby Abreu, the Phillies outfielder who rewrote the Home Run Derby record book in winning the event has tumbled mightily in the days after the event. Over his past seven games he is hitting .136 with 0 home runs, 2 RBI and five strikeouts. Milwaukee's Carlos Lee is hitting .160 with one home run and one RBI and five strikeouts. Jason Bay, the Pittsburgh outfielder who didn't hit any home runs in the Derby, is slumping at .185 with one home run and 2 RBI. So is Texas's Mark Teixeira, at .143 with 0 home runs and nine strikeouts in the past seven games. Atlanta's Andruw Jones has been hitting well at .292 as has Detroit catcher Pudge Rodriguez, the home run contest runner-up, who has torn into the second half at .370 with two home runs. According to Jim Powell, Lee claims that the HR Derby wrecked his swing. My concern is that those who do well in the 2nd half always seem to be veterans, with the exception of Ryan Howard.
  5. Bernard the number 2 gut in the bullpen? I would have thought he would be well after Fingers, McClure, Slaton, and Ladd.
  6. Well, if Gwynn is up then all the pro-TGJs and anti-TGJs can just watch and see how he does. Nothing said will matter now; only how well he produces from here on out. My concern is with protection behind Prince. Bill was ample protection, but now that has been extinguished. I love Corey batting leadoff, but the five slot is huge. We might have to move Corey there, though I don't want to (and from a personal achievement standpoint, batting leadoff would allow Corey more ABs while his hitting streak is still active). If I were a pitcher looking at Johnny, Geoff, or Mench in the on deck circle, why would I even think of giving Prince anything near his wheelhouse?
  7. Hey Bikeage, I was at that Cactus Club show. He spit his drink at me. I thought it was great. His schtick seems to be a satire on the garden variety of comedians. It's not like he's playing the Riverside or Overture Center. He's doing the High Noon and Cactus Club in front of people looking for an experience, not just an act. In person, he definitely delivers on that experience by having much of the audience wondering what is going on, the drunks enjoying the ludicrous jokes, and the rest thinking about the guts it takes to subject yourself to the riddicule. There are so many acts out there that are the same, but the difference he gives is in the eyebrow raise he produces.
  8. After Armageddon and Pearl Harbor, I don't care if it's a Godfather prequel, Michael Bay gets no more of my time.
  9. Cubs just scored 2 in the Top of the 7th. 7-2 Cubs.
  10. Probably his Hall of Fame Induction speech or any number of Johnny Carson interviews.
  11. They get thousands of votes no matter what they do. Does that mean they have to kill journalism with worthless subject matter and turn into a bunch of non-pithy....(can I say a word that starts with "wh" and rhymes with "doors".
  12. Jenkins went deep on a lefty.
  13. Brady Clark doesn't have a team right now, does he?
  14. Wow, a post before Hall is off the field.
  15. I know, but that is kind of the point. It becomes hysterical watching the audience trying to figure out what's going on- "Is this a gag, or is this guy for real?"
  16. Sabathia apparently doesn't want to start the AS Game. 7-2 Tigers. Enter Dan Haren.
  17. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- we go back in september and there is an off day between the pittsburgh trip and the next city, so we could loose an off day and avoid a dh. As was pointed out the other day, the players have a right to veto that game if they so choose because it would interfere with their right to a day off every 20 days. Don't know that they would choose to veto it, but they have the right to opt for a doubleheader instead
  18. I was all set for a Brewer game with a short day of work (half days on the 4th and 5th instead of a full off-day on the 4th) and now there's rain. Ah well, the Tigers are up 5-2 on Cleveland and I'm sure someone will want to mention here whatever happens in the Cub game later.
  19. Chris Saenz is getting shelled this year in the Angels' AA affiliate (Arkansas Travelers) 1-6 7.68 ERA 18 G 8 GS 43.1 IP 1.96 WHIP Too bad. I wanted to see him do well.
  20. You're either into this guy or your not. I think he's hysterical in an Andy Kaufman-esque way. Anyway, he will be at the High Noon Saloon on July 25th, with my friend's band Awesome Car Funmaker opening. Some of you will laugh, others will roll their eyes, but I love the behavioral science of it all (he had a brief cameo in the Tenacious D film). youtube
  21. I don't know if this has been posted, but I love The Onion's knock on ESPN. link
  22. Anyone see the ESPN "Who's Now," using tournament brackets to decide who the hottest athletic persona is right now? Why has ESPN turned into People Magazine? Whatever happened to sports analysis, and Xes and Os? I'm having a tougher time discerning ESPN from Mtv. In a nutshell, I don't care who you tell me is the hottest athlete today. Just show me a damn baseball game.
  23. Hope I'm not stealing your thunder Brian. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/46/I-74.svg/600px-I-74.svg.png
  24. #3, probably COOOOOOOOOP, but SS Ernest Riles & OF Ben Oglivie were also African-American LH batters that year... It's the stance that gives it away. #2 is Yount, no question It may be based off of Yount, but there are some differences to suggest that it is generic. (i.e. facially, short hair). Plus, if they really meant for it to be Yount, either his name or number would be put somewhere on that cover(or insert). It appears nowhere (my dad collected those things. Yount, Gantner, and Molly appeared on the next cover-unless I missed one-, name and everything).
  25. With the first baseman not holding the runner on and the pitcher not pitching from the stretch, a throw wouldn't matter. That makes sense, although I've seen some pretty slow guys going to second. Besides, some (most?) of our relievers who give up the defensive indifference always pitch from the stretch.
