  1. Sunday 9/17: Latest Milwaukee Tailgate Podcast - "The guys discussed what was a pretty outstanding week for the Brewers, David Stearns finally landing with the Mets, how things are setting up for the playoffs and of course those stinkin' patches." Via the Journal Sentinel Podcast: "Milwaukee's superb 5-2 week at home has the Brewers cruising toward a division title; are the bats really turning the corner, or does the offense still have issues to solve? Brewers reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe discuss a week of big homers (including Mark Canha's unforgettable grand slam on Saturday). Should Mark Canha come back in 2024? Joey Wiemer's struggles resulted in getting optioned to AAA; what's the concern level with the rookie players' improvement over the season? Josh Donaldson arrives. The pitching, specifically Brandon Woodruff and Freddy Peralta, continues to be lethal. And David Stearns is officially headed to New York. Remembrew When goes back in time to the Milwaukee Braves and perhaps the greatest pitching performance ever. Curt Blanche questions a popular belief about the Brewers' struggles on offense. Then, JR has a conversation with 2023 first-round draft pick Brock Wilken, who appeared in Milwaukee early last week before heading to Class AA Biloxi. They talk about his penchant for power, his defense at third base and his first season of organized baseball." *** Postgame Shows for the 2-1 loss to the Nationals -- WTMJ with Dom Cotroneo: - Jerry Augustine is the guest Via 97.3's Baseball Postgame Show - Tim Allen hosts; this program aired on WOKY due to Packers coverage on 97.3 The Game. 5. Wish we had better news out of Saturday's results. We can't fault the efforts of a Biloxi club that fought valiantly throughout the second half, but just had to compete side-by-side for months with a Montgomery Biscuits team that simply would not fully step aside. Hold your heads high, Shuckers, but yeah, it's a sour Sunday morning recap. There are interesting tidbits below, so let's dig in. Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic TRANSACTIONS: LHP's Josh Shapiro and Fraudy Maldonado were released by the organization. For background on the two southpaws, please visit our transaction thread post here. Bottom of the 8th, Biloxi facing the same 2-1 deficit they had since the 4th inning. Tampa's uber-prospect, third baseman Junior Caminero (0-for-5 on the game) committed an error on an Ethan Murray grounder with one out. Speedster Eric Brown Jr. pinch-ran for Murray. Leadoff man Isaac Collins has been so strong in 2023, a real breakout season, including a .919 OPS in ten September games. Collins kicked off the Biloxi at-bats thusly: Our @Joseph Zarrwas among those watching live in the 8th: "Collins fouls off two heaters - the second one was a meatball and he regretted getting under it. He then goes down looking on a dead center curve. EBJ takes second and the throw goes into CF. Now on 3rd. Two down. Chourio to the dish." Jackson Chourio, up to this point, had been working a strong on-base game. He lined a single in the first, but was gunned down trying to steal to end the inning. Chourio walked with two outs in the 3rd (followed by a Brock Wilken base on balls), but both men were stranded. Chourio led off the 6th with an infield single but was immediately eliminated on a Wilken GIDP. A week grounder to second base off Jackson's bat ended the 8th. There was a very eventful and unfortunate sequence in the bottom of the 4th involving catcher Jeferson Quero and Manager Mike Guerrero. We have it detailed for you here, please review. Zavier Warren attempted to rescue the Shuckers with a two-out double in the 9th. Is Warren that "slow"? With Guerrero out, the Shuckers bench chose to pinch-run for Warren (6-for-9 in SB attempts this season) with Ernesto Martinez. That left only OF Lamar Sparks on the bench. Seldom-used catcher Nick Kahle had entered the game for Quero after the injury you read about at the prior link. Sparks could have been utilized with designated hitter Wes Clarke moved out of the DH spot to move behind the plate in the 10th inning. Or better yet, Martinez could have simply pinch-hit for Kahle. When Kahle popped out to end things, one wondered what impact the Mike Guerrero ejection had on those late bench decisions. No matter how you shake it, this defeat, like the Carolina loss Friday night to end their season, was very frustrating. Kudos to TJ Shook, James Meeker, and Cam Robinson on their mound efforts. Sigh... Despite a 38-29 record in the second half, the Sounds elimination number with seven games remaining is down to just three, because, of course, the Rays' minor league rolling pin saw Durham win yet again. Feel free to peruse the box for a few nuggets of positivity, but in actuality, not much. The Biloxi season finale is at 1:05 Central, the Sounds play at 4:05. Enjoy your Sunday, thanks for reading! 7. Brewers have released LHP's Josh Shapiro and Fraudy Maldonado, as per MiLB's Transactions Page. It would be easy for many fans to not be familiar with this pair of southpaws. Shapiro has not pitched since his draft season of 2019 (34th round out of Marshall). The entirety of Shapiro's pro career will be his 12 appearances in Maryvale (three starts). The pandemic eliminated the 2020 season, and Shapiro underwent Tommy John surgery early in the 2021 season, though we don't know the surgery month. We also don't know the circumstances (follow-up procedures, other setbacks?) that have prevented Shapiro from taking a mound in earnest since that rookie campaign four years ago. We hope Shapiro, now 26 years old, is fully healthy at this point. Maldonado was signed by the Crew in May of 2021. The 6'0", 155 lb. (listed at the time) Dominican native originally signed with the Mets in the July 2019 signing period. However, he was released before ever suiting up for the Mets' organization. Maldonado would make 32 relief appearances across 2021-2022 with a tough 1.76 WHIP (35 walks and nine HBP's in 38.2 IP). He would strike out 52 in those innings, so the arm was there, but not in 2023, when he was sidelined from the start with an undisclosed (but obviously serious) injury. Maldonado is still just 20 years old, and we wish him well, whether his pro baseball journey ends here or not.
  8. Brewers have released LHP's Josh Shapiro and Fraudy Maldonado, as per MiLB's Transactions Page. Each name has been removed from the initial post in this thread. Before the weekend is out, we'll write up some backstory info on each and wish them well (within our Transaction Thread).

  13. Young players need to learn valuable lessons along the way, and since championship trophies are hard to come by, season-ending disappointments are something to gain experience from. Such was the case with the Carolina club Friday night down the road in Kinston. In Biloxi, the Shuckers gave fans and most importantly themselves a boost with a decisive win keeping their own playoff dreams intact. While only on the fringe of qualifying, Nashville put forth a fine effort as well. Image courtesy of Brewer Fanatic TRANSACTIONS: OF Garrett Mitchell sent on rehab assignment to AAA Nashville Final: Down East (Rangers) 4, Carolina 3, 11 innings; Carolina loses best-of-three series two games to one Via the Mudcats' site, we encourage readers to review each of the affiliate write-ups as part of your season-long Link Report routine: Mudcats Fall 4-3 in Extras in Playoff Series Finale Pregame Media Notes Box Score / Wrap First off, thanks to Voice of the Mudcats Greg Young Jr. for coordinating audio broadcasts for these two games in the technologically-barren landscape of the Wood Ducks home ballpark. I, for one, was diligently listening while my iPad streamed the big league action from Milwaukee. History will indicate that the Mudcats were foiled by their inability in the 11th to bring in any of their three baserunners, but you could argue that the game was lost in the first inning. In 49 games in 2023, infielder Juan Baez committed 18 errors, though only one error in eight games since his August 29th promotion to Carolina. Playing third base for a second straight night Friday, Baez (who only turned 18 years old in June, mind you) had a one-out throwing error. Starting RHP Yorman Galindez couldn't pick up Baez and allowed a two-run double. The Mudcats were fortunate to limit the score to 2-0 as LF Jace Avina nabbed a runner at the plate when the next batter singled. And there it would remain through seven innings as Galindez worked three frames and RHP Jeferson Figueroa was perfect through the three middle innings. The best Carolina opportunity came in the 6th as the game log will show. Runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs, when Luke Adams, DH'ing in this game, grounded into a forceout at third base and the inning fully fizzled shortly thereafter. Adams would not miss his opportunity when it came around again in the 8th with a man on: Adams himself is only 19 years old, and hasn't even cracked the 19-and-one-half-mark yet, so we can allow for the teenage enthusiasm. Safe to say he knew it was gone off the bat. Imagine the celebration if it was a go-ahead blast. If this was a big-league playoff game, there would have been no zombie runners during the final two innings. But there were, and it was so for both teams. Let's hear it for RH reliever Chase Costello. In Game One Tuesday, he threw 37 pitches in two innings (one run allowed). He managed 3.2 scoreless innings in fewer pitches here (35), and stranded two inherited runners upon entering. This report will focus on this one game, and is not meant to be a post-mortem on the Mudcats' fine season. A disappointing way to say goodbye to Carolina for now, but the experience gained throughout will prove valuable for a talented crew. It should be a fun summer of 2024 in Appleton. Though the Sounds are still alive in the postseason chase, the Shuckers are really alive in a much more time-sensitive way, so we venture to Biloxi next. Final: Biloxi 9, Montgomery 2 Via the Shuckers' site: Tobias Myers Strikes Out Eight, Shuckers Keep Playoff Hopes Alive - Biloxi smashes three homers in 9-2 win, Wes Clarke falls a triple short of the cycle Pre-Game Media Notes Box Score / Wrap What is less daunting than having to win three in a row against your primary rival to reach the postseason? Having to win two in a row. Nine runs? How about nine video clips from the Shuckers' media feed? We'll post two here, symbolic of being able to breathe from the start: Manager Mike Guerrero has a wealth of riches to choose from for his Saturday night lineup against RHP Cole Wilcox, who has made 24 starts for the Biscuits but hasn't dazzled with a 5.40 ERA. It's a free MiLB.TV game, by the way. Wes Clarke aids in that lineup flexibility. Behind the plate while Jeferson Quero rested, it allowed for Zavier Warren and his 1.269 (!) September OPS and Brock-Freakin'-Wilken to both be in Friday's lineup, at third base and DH, respectively. Mix in Ernesto Martinez at first base and one of those five will begin on the bench Saturday. Via MiLB Pipeline's Sam Dykstra, in Biloxi for the weekend: Junior Caminero squares off against Tobias Myers. The two were traded for one another in Nov. 2021. Caminero is a beast of a prospect, just 20 years old, right up there in the Jackson Chourio realm. (Chourio walked and singled here, by the way.) The Guardians wish they had that "give up a lottery ticket" trade back. The Brewers will benefit from grabbing Myers after an ultra-disastrous 2022 and inking him to a rare two-year minor league deal. In this game, Caminero reached twice vs. Myers, 1-for-2 with a walk. So the stakes remain high on Saturday night, and the Biloxi backs are still up against a wall, but staying alive is fun. Final: Nashville 8, Charlotte (White Sox) 2 Roller's Six RBI Carries Sounds Past Charlotte - Nashville outfielder leads offensive charge, Sounds rout Knights 8-2 Pre-Game Media Notes Box Score / Wrap MLB White Sox: 58-92 AAA White Sox: 49-93 AA White Sox: 49-87 So yeah, be thankful you're here at Brewer Fanatic. With a win and a Durham loss vs. Louisville, the Sounds are within 4.5 games (with 8 games remaining) of the Bulls in the International League second half title chase. So who is this Chris Roller cat? Four years in the Dodgers' system as a 30th round pick out of a Texas JUCO back when they had more than 20 draft rounds. Grabbed in minor league Rule 5 by Cleveland (December 2020), and acquired for cash by the Crew to fill a needed gap with a month left in this season, all he's done with Nashville is post a .405/.542/.676 line in 11 games. Will the Brewers bring the soon-to-be 27-year-old back this fall, away from minor league free agency? Stay tuned. We see you, Garrett Mitchell. Three K's as part of an 0-for-4? No matter, welcome back. Tyler Black - heating up, getting more comfortable each night. With each game summary out of Nashville, we can't help but be reminded that Abraham Toro has had a pretty spectacular AAA season. His 40-man roster spot isn't going anywhere.
