  1. The latest in our announcer series, our chat with Brevard County's Kirk Agius, now graces the home page. Good stuff and fun insights, but as Kirk will explain, some disappointing news for many of us, especially family and friends of the 2008 Manatees. The Florida State League is a tough cookie when it comes to maintaining long-term broadcast support, unfortunately. We'll be linking to some Manatee games in Link Reports this coming season, but it will be limited (probably about one-third of the schedule, if that), and it will be to the opponents' feed. Our thanks again to Kirk.
  2. I wish somebody had come up with "I Never Surrender My Sunglasses At Night". colbyjack, take a snapshot of your kid in a Hart jersey tugging at his Ray-Ban's as someone tries to pull them away. I just want to give kudos to those options not receiving votes, it's not because you weren't worthy of consideration. Nice job, all.
  3. RHP Dan Grybash last pitched in affiliated ball with Brevard County in 2005; he's been in indy ball since, and signed with Fort Worth of the American Association this week. Catcher Tim Marks, whose only taste of affiliated ball was with Beloit in 2004, was just placed on the inactive list of Sioux Falls (South Dakota), also in the American Association. Marks posted a .705 OPS in 82 games with the Canaries last summer.
  4. Jim Callis of Baseball America answers the question below in his latest Ask BA:
  5. Link to last week's thread and archive: February 9th Episode This week's show is from 4:00 - 6:00 PM Central. Not sure if we'll locate an archive for you again -- it appears Sports Bubbler's archive appears after a couple of days. Today Jim Powell's guests will be Jim Callis of Baseball America, Gord Ash, Manny Parra, and Tony Gwynn Jr. Pretty sure Jim will sprinkle in some of your calls. Listen Live Here on the 16th
  6. Former Brewer 40-man roster RHP Tim Bausher is set to pitch again in the independent Can-Am League in 2008. He was just claimed by the New Jersey Jackals off Can-Am waivers -- the Jackals play at Yogi Berra Stadium on the campus of Montclair State University.
  7. In mid-October last year, after clearing waivers, Jones re-signed with Milwaukee on a minor league deal. To be honest, I hadn't thought about that name in a while (only six starts with Huntsville in '07). Yeah, he could become an interesting story this season, or a spring training release. The answer most likely is smack in the middle.
  8. For me, having Ben Kingsley defeat Paul Newman for The Verdict was very painful. It was clear that this was Newman's very best and likely last chance for overdue Oscar gold, and it was not out of sentimentality that he was nominated, anything but -- he nailed the role. I remember the entire audience was just ready to explode if he had won, and if I remember, oddsmakers gave him more than a fighting chance. The movie itself was very good, and actually holds up well today. Here's to you, Paul!
  9. Only 35 available -- I realize you couldn't get it by Thursday.
  10. RHP Alec Zumwalt, at age 27 still on the cusp of that first big-league appearance, has signed a minor league deal with Colorado.

  12. Our home page has been updated with the second installment in our five part series, our chat with Huntsville's Director of Broadcasting and Voice of the Stars, Brett Pollock. After reading the Q&A, you can read more about Brett here with this June 2007 MILB.com profile, and if you wish to relive the Montgomery - Huntsville postseason finale in even more painful detail than Brett noted, the Biscuits' broadcaster, Jim Tocco, details the minutia here, including his brief press room visits with Brett that fateful evening. Our thanks again to Brett. If you wish to chime in on any of the announcers' observations and/or comments, please feel free to do so within this thread.
  13. This article discusses the current situations of four minor leaguers from the Fort Myers, Florida area, including Brendan Katin. Some interesting insights into their in-season salaries and off-season jobs as well. The specific passage on Katin is below: Fort Myers High graduate Brendan Katin, 25, played for the Huntsville Stars of the Double-A Southern League last year. He's been a pro for three years, rising through the ranks but not yet where he wants to be - in the majors. He led the Southern League with 24 homers last year. That makes him feel good about the future, about the chance that someday he'll be in the majors. He allows himself to daydream about the call to the majors. "Every day," Katin said. He's spending the winter in West Palm Beach. He's working out and working. Katin has an off-season job installing fire sprinklers. With the average Double-A salary around $1,500 a month, off-season employment is advisable, if not fun. "It's terrible," Katin said of his job. "You go to a job site where you're on the low end of the totem pole. I'm getting up at 5:45 every day, working to 4, 4:30. Get a snack and work out." Soon, though, he'll report to spring training with other Milwaukee Brewers minor leaguers, pursuing the big-league dream, when his job once again will be playing baseball and not installing fire sprinklers. A real job makes him appreciate his baseball job. "It makes me look so forward to going out to the season," Katin said. "It makes the season a lot more fun."
  14. Locking this thread -- we'll discuss each episode in a new thread this winter / spring.
  15. Here's your lineup for the 3:00 PM Central show Saturday February 9th (listen live here) : -- Doug Melvin taking your calls -- Cub play-by-play man (and former Brewer broadcast employee) Len Kasper -- Bill Hall -- Manny Parra Craig Counsell -- Open lines with your calls to wrap up We may have our own archive, which would be available before the official Sports Bubbler archive, which was ready a day or two after the show last week.
  16. This archive looks as though it will be available for a week or so. Considering it's on Auburn-area radio, Gabe was certainly sincere with his comments on Milwaukee fans. To find the interview, position the audio player at the 25:00 minute mark -- it's a 15-minute interview.
  17. RHP Ryan Trytten (39th round, 2000) spent '00-'03 in the Brewers system, '05-'06 in the Padres organization, with independent league stints sprinkled within. He'll return to the independent American Association, signing with the Lincoln (NE) Saltdogs this week. He'll be 27 in May, he reached AA with the Padres in '06.
  18. Just a reminder to review our international thread which extended with an occasional update throughout the offseason...
  19. Gotta love when players who haven't been in affiliated ball since '04 get back in action -- infielder Rich Paz signs with the Astros. Diehards will remember his split 2003 season between Huntsville and Indianapolis, when at age 25, he posted some nice OBP figures as a second baseman. It was Paz' only season in the organization. It even earned him some Power 50 recognition from Toby at the time.
  20. Noted Minor League aficionado John Sickels with his take on Yovani
  21. RHP Eric "Mega" Thomas, the 6'9" RHP the Brewers drafted in the 3rd round in 91, has been traded by the Reno Silver Sox of the independent Golden Baseball League to the Sussex (N.J.) Skyhawks of the independent Can-Am League. He was released by the Anaheim Angels orgnization early last year. On the short money independent leaguers make, you'd think they wouldn't have to also deal with being uprooted cross-country, but you see trades among different independent leagues all the time. Perhaps sometimes it's to accommodate a player's wishes.
  22. Lefty reliever Mike Myers (Dodgers), RHP Nelson Figueroa (Mets), minor league deals.
  23. ABBA? Ace of Base? Starland Vocal Band? I'm color-blind http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  24. Matt Kinney agreed to a one-year deal this past December to play with the Seibu Lions of Japan.
  25. Are you basing that on the 6 innings he pitched in the majors in september last year? He had a 4.48 ERA in AAA, that's not that impressive. In the Arizona Fall League, Stetter faced 22 LH batters -- he allowed one hit against them, he walked one of them, and the other batters went 0-for-20 with 15 K's. If we could trust Yost to use him as a LOOGY in the strictest sense, there's no better candidate. That's a big IF.
