MiLB.com: Threshers outslug Manatees John Urick crushed a grand slam in the fifth inning as visiting Clearwater edged Brevard County, 8-7, on Wednesday. The 25-year-old designated hitter went 3-for-4 and slammed his sixth homer as the Threshers erased an early 6-0 deficit. Clay Harris slugged a two-run shot, his fifth, in the fourth to extend his hitting streak to 15 games for Clearwater. The 24-year-old first baseman snapped a 6-6 tie with an RBI groundout in the sixth and Gregory Golson collected three hits and scored twice for the Threshers (5-2). Reliever Brett Harker (1-2) yielded one run on three hits while striking out one over three innings for the win. William Savage fanned one in two perfect frames for his second save. Yohannis Perez went 3-for-4 with a pair of two-run singles and J.R. Hopf clubbed his first homer (with Brevard County) for the Manatees (3-4). Brevard County's Mat Gamel singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to a Florida State League season-high 25 games. The 21-year-old third baseman is batting .429 (39-for-91) during that stretch. Reliever Patrick Ryan (2-2) was charged with two runs on four hits and two walks in 2 1/3 innings and took the loss. -- Shane Figueroa/MLB.com -

Final: Missoula (Diamondbacks) 4, Helena 2 Helena Site Game Summary: Brewer Rally Falls Short in Ninth HELENA--Down three runs entering the bottom of the ninth inning, Helena had runners on first and second without any outs, but could not pull out the victory. Brewers Caleb Gindl and Jonathan Lucroy led off the inning with back-to-back singles, however, Helena could bring only one run to the plate. Pinch-hitter Eric Newton made contact allowing Gindl to score and cut the deficit to 4-2. The Brewers eventually loaded the bases for hitter Matt Cline but he quietly grounded out on an attempted check swing to end the game. Althoug Helena provided some excitement during its final at-bat, a three-run Missoula seventh inning proved to be the difference. Both teams were tied 1-1 through six innings. Helena jumped ahead early with the first run of the game in the first inning on a home run by Caleb Gindl. Gindl hit the first pitch of the game he saw and extended his hitting streak to nine games with his first home run as a professional. The Osprey knotted the game at 1-1 when Derrick Walker hit an RBI single in the third inning. Both offenses quieted down until the seventh inning when Missoula struck for three more runs that proved to be the difference. Reliever Curtis Pasma, who took over for starter Evan Anundsen, was charged with the three runs. Brock Kjeldgaard entered for Pasma in the seventh with two outs and shut down the Osprey the rest of the way. Gindl finished with a 3-for-4 game and brought his batting average to .471 while Jonathan Lucroy and Jordan Swaydan collected a pair of hits each. For Missoula, Walker drove in three of the Osprey's four runs. Osprey starting pitcher Brian Henry earned his first win of the season going seven innings; Evan Scribner pitched two innings for his second save of the year. With the Helena loss both teams are now tied with a 4-5 record. The Brewers and Osprey will now move the series to Missoula. Helena next plays at Missoula at 7:05 PM Thursday (8:05 Central). West Virginia Site Game Summary: POWER SNAP SCORELESS SKID IN 12 INNING VICTORY Taylor Green snapped West Virginia?s scoreless streak of 27 innings with an RBI single in the fourth inning of Wednesday night?s game at Lake Olmstead Stadium, and Green came through again with a run-scoring single in the top of the 12th inning to put the Power ahead for good as they snapped a three game losing streak with a 7-4 win over Augusta. After Green?s run scoring base-knock in the fourth, Andrew Lefave touched home plate on an errant throw from second baseman Marcus Sanders. The Power took a 3-0 lead in the sixth inning on another throwing error from Sanders which plated Lefave again. Augusta got their first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on Ryan Rohlinger?s RBI groundout. In the seventh, Mike McBryde singled in Dayton Buller to bring the GreenJackets within one but Kenny Holmberg ripped a bases loaded, RBI single in the eighth inning to put the lead back at two. Augusta tied the game with a pair of runs in the eighth. Rohlinger doubled in the first run and scored the tying run on a base hit from Brett Pill. Green?s second RBI single highlighted a three run 12th inning for the Power. Holmberg followed Green?s base-hit with a sacrifice fly that scored Chuckie Caufield and Martin Maldonado singled in Green to finish the big inning. Omar Aguilar (7-1) gave up two runs in the eighth inning, but followed with three scoreless frames to get the victory. Matt Kretzschmar (1) got the save in his 2007 Power debut while Dave Newton (2-1) was tagged with the loss. Left hander Brae Wright allowed two runs, one earned on six hits and struck out five through seven innings. The Power improved to 51-24 overall and 3-4 in the second half, while the GreenJackets fell to 55-22 overall and 5-2 in the second half with the loss. The Power committed six errors, a season high. Lefave scored four times and had four base hits to lead the Power. Caufield, Green and Maldonado all chipped in with two hits a piece. The Power will finish the four game series against the GreenJackets Thursday night. The Power will start right hander Alex Periard (3-1, 2.85) and Augusta will start right hander Kevin Pucetas (9-1, 1.67). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central). West Virginia Box Score: Eleven combined errors in this game, but as was noted during the broadcast, the Power in particular also made several fine defnsive plays; four of Brae Wright's last five stars have been quality -- encouraging... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_augafx_1 West Virginia Game Log: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_augafx_1 -

Final: Chattanooga (Reds) 6, Huntsville 3 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...ewsId=1243 Cosme Leads Looks to Another Win Caonabo Cosme collected three hits, including a home run, and knocked in two to carry Chattanooga to a 6-3 win over Huntsville Wednesday afternoon at Joe Davis Stadium. The Lookouts improved to 8-2 in the second half of the season and 37-43 overall, while the Stars fell to 3-7 in the second half and 40-38 overall in losing a third straight game for a fifth time this season. Brendan Katin?s leadoff home run in the second inning tied the game at one and the Stars took a 2-1 lead in the third when starting pitcher Steve Hammond reached on an error, stole second base and scored on a two-out single by Hernan Iribarren. Hammond worked three innings, giving up a run on one hit, walking one and fanning four before the game was delayed an hour and 37 minutes prior to the top of the fourth. Jeff Housman took over for the Stars and retired the first two batters he faced before Cosme tied the game with an opposite field home run to right field, his fifth of the year and second in as many games. J.C. Boscan?s leadoff long ball, his first of the season, in the fifth, gave the Lookouts the lead for good before former Milwaukee Brewer Enrique Cruz doubled in two runs with two outs and scored on a Cosme single to complete a four-run rally. Housman suffered the loss after yielding a season-high five runs on a season-high seven hits in two innings of work. The Lookouts have totaled 26 runs on 39 hits in winning the last three games to square the season series at seven games apiece. Ramon Ramirez and Brock Till each threw two scoreless frames behind starter Carlos Fisher, who did not return after the rain after allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits. Ramirez earned the win in his second double-A appearance and Josh Roenicke worked a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first save at the double-A level. The Stars were held to three runs or less for a 14th time in the last 16 games and held to six hits or fewer for an 13th time in the last 18 contests. The series continues Thursday night, as Huntsville will send southpaw Lindsay Gulin to the mound against Lookouts? right-hander Sam LeCure. The Max St. Pierre as pitcher experiment is already over. The Brewers have released the converted catcher who was acquired in the Ben Hendrickson deal. Filling in some roster updates on the lowest levels, now that the short seasons have begun: RHP Wily Peralta, who underwent Tommy John surgery, is on the Arizona Brewer 60-day disabled list, as is just-turned 18-year-old RHP Joel DeLaCruz -- no word on the extent of the young Dominican's injury. DeLaCruz made two relief appearances in Arizona Rookie ball last year. The Brewers have two players on the Arizona League restricted list: LHP Rene Ducler and OF Jose Rangel. Each was signed after this year's media guide came out, so we'll know more about them when / if they are activated. The following players are technically on West Virginia's disabled list at this time: catcher Jesse D'Amico, RHP Amaury Rivas, and RHP Harold Mejia (Mejia has seen action with the Arizona Brewers recently, but technically he is on a rehab assignment there). Whether these players will report to West Virginia once activated remains to be seen, and none of their injuries are known. Looks like there may be some additional info of this sort to report tonight -- will keep you posted.

Manatees GM Buck Rogers prior to Tuesday's game: Who's Hot at the Plate? Mat Gamel is currently on a 23-game hitting streak with 11 of those games being multiple hit games. Check out these numbers: April's Batting Average: .230 May's Batting Average: .270 June's batting Average: .427 He's hitting .303 on the season. If the opposing teams did their home work they'd see that the LH-batting Mat is hitting an eye-opening .388 against lefties (49 AB's) and.282 against righties. He's also more adept at getting those hits on the road (.336 on the road versus .263 at home). In fact, some other numbers that make Mat the go-to guy in crunch situations at the plate: he's batting .343 with runners on base, .351 with runners in scoring position and even .320 with runners in scoring position with two outs! Mat's only grounded into a double play three times all season. Chris Errecart has hit safely in six of his last seven games and every one of those games was a multiple hit game. He's banging out a .313 batting average including a gaudy .412 average against left-handed pitching. When the season started, Chris' bat was so hot he made the Chicago fire look like a girl scout campfire. He suffered an injury and short stay on the DL, but has gotten right back into the game where he left off and is again making opposing pitchers shake like a small dog next to a fire hydrant with fresh paint. April's Batting Average: .360 May's Batting Average: .217 June's batting Average: .348 He's swatting an incredible .439 as the Manatees lead-off hitter this season in 39 plate appearances. Nothing like standing in there and ruining a no-hitter with the first at-bat. He's also hitting .347 with bases empty. -

Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/sports/huntsvi...amp;coll=1 DiFelice defying odds Stars pitcher making his best pitches for major-league bid at 30 By BRAD SHEPARD For the Huntsville Times Tucked away in the ballpark of a New Jersey-based independent league team the past couple years, Mark DiFelice found himself contemplating Plan B. The Stars pitcher had toiled in four organizations, reached his late 20s and was struggling to regain confidence on the mound. "Really, through those times, all I thought about was my daughter to get me through," DiFelice said. "I had to make this more of a career for her." Near three-year-old Mia in the Philadelphia area, DiFelice began to gain clarity and comfort. He pitched well last year and after the success, he caught the eye of Nashville Sounds pitching coach Stan Kyles in a winter league in Mexico and was signed by Milwaukee. Less than a year later, DiFelice - now 30 and with his fifth organization - was notified Tuesday that he was among eight Stars selected to the Southern League North Division All-Star team. For a guy who's spent most of his professional career mired in invisibility, getting noticed was nice. It also completes a full circle of sorts. Six years ago, he made his first SL All-Star team as a 24-year-old starter for Carolina. "The light is kind of dwindling a bit, I know," DiFelice said, "but I still feel like I can pitch in the big leagues." Especially if he throws like he has this season. In 54 1/3 innings, DiFelice is 5-1 with a 1.66 earned run average. He's started once and should receive at least one more start on Friday, but he's carved his spot on the team with solid relief work. DiFelice is also working on an impressive scoreless-innings streak that has reached 23 2/3 frames over nine games. "He's done the job all year long," Stars pitching coach Rich Sauveur said. "He's been our go-to guy. I don't think he's going to be down here much longer." That's high praise for a pitcher who was left for dead professionally just a year ago. After six seasons in the Rockies organization, he bounced around three systems in two years. Finally, he landed with the Nationals and promptly got lost in the shuffle. With numerous major league pitchers in rehab assignments during 2005, Washington relegated starters like DiFelice to bullpen duty and long droughts between appearances. "I really didn't get a fair shake with them, and I lost my confidence," he said. "People say you've got to take a step back to take two steps forward." So, he went back home. Close to his daughter and playing in the independent leagues for former major league closer Sparky Lyle, a rejuvenated DiFelice regained his form. He also developed a nasty cut-fastball that has "been my bread and butter" this year. DiFelice doesn't regret any of the journey that has taken him seemingly everywhere but the majors. He believes he went to New Jersey for a reason, he played in front of Brewers personnel in Mexico for a reason, and he's still playing professional baseball for a reason. As for Plan B? Right now, he's still taking a shot at that career for his family. "I think I've got a couple years left in me," he said. "This feels like a second chance."

Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...amp;coll=1 Chattanooga shackles Stars in 10-1 romp Cueto allows five hits in six innings, swats bases-clearing double By BRAD SHEPARD For the Huntsville Times Well, at least it didn't rain. One night after the Stars got soaked and were smoked by the Chattanooga Lookouts, they played almost a mirror game Tuesday. This time, the Stars lost 10-1 rather than 10-0 like Monday. This time, they had five hits rather than three. This time, the skies stayed clear through the ninth rather than open up. That's about the extent of the "good" news. "We don't feel good about this right now," second baseman Hernan Iribarren said. "You've got to give them credit, though. They've put a couple of good pitchers out there." Lookouts starter Johnny Cueto worked six solid innings in his Double-A debut, allowing five hits and one run. Also, with the game still close in the fourth, Cueto ripped a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double. It came off Stars starter Corey Thurman, who dropped to 2-5 on the season. He allowed yet another home run, too - his 10th given up in 46 innings this year. Last season, Thurman allowed eight in 140 innings. He finished with six earned runs charged in four innings. The Stars (3-6) struck first when Iribarren led off the game with a homer, his first of the season. Star prospect Jay Bruce again impressed, going 2-for-5 with an RBI. Caonabo Cosme also went 4-for-5. Huntsville's Steve Hammond takes the mound today at 12:05. -

Link while active, text follows: chronicle.augusta.com/sto...3810.shtml Jackets jump on Jeffress By Steve Sanders, Augusta Chronicle Staff Writer West Virginia's Jeremy Jeffress took the mound Tuesday as one of the South Atlantic League's hottest pitchers - and the No. 4-rated prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers organization. With a fastball that has hit 102 mph on the radar gun, the South Boston, Va., native has drawn comparisons to Dwight Gooden. He hadn't given up a run in his previous four starts and was carrying a 1.14 ERA. The Augusta GreenJackets didn't seem impressed, however, and Augusta starter Ben Snyder showed the 19-year-old how to pitch at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The GreenJackets scored five runs in the first inning off Jeffress, who exited after recording only two outs. Snyder won his fifth consecutive start for Augusta in a 7-0 victory over the Power. "One of the things we really like about our guys is that they're sort of up for the challenge, and that counts for a whole lot," Augusta coach Andy Skeels said. "Their attitude is, 'Let's get in the ring and see how it goes.'" For the second night in a row, Augusta's league-best pitching staff silenced West Virginia's league-best lineup, which entered with a .302 average. The GreenJackets blanked the Power for the second consecutive game en route to their minor league-leading 15th shutout. "It's pretty impressive when you can shut out the best-hitting team in the league. And two in a row like that is really nice," said Bert Bradley, the San Francisco Giants' coordinator of minor league pitching. "It's more than impressive what they've done (this season). You don't see it very often." Snyder, who didn't allow a hit until the fifth, gave up just three in six shutout innings. He struck out four and lowered his ERA to 2.06. Relievers Ryan Shaver and David Newton combined to pitch the final three innings to preserve the shutout. "No one wants to give up a run. The relievers don't want to give up the shutout either," Snyder said. Recently-acquired infielder Juan Jean collected three RBI on a single to cap Augusta's five-run first, and Bobby Felmy and Brett Pill each had two hits. The GreenJackets have won 14 consecutive home games and improved to 31-6 at Lake Olmstead Stadium, increasing the best home -field advantage in baseball, winning at a clip of .837. "It's a pitcher's park. It plays bigger than the numbers on the wall," Snyder said. "And Augusta's the hottest, thickest, muggiest place in the world, so we don't go out and try to smash home runs. We just know how to play at our home park." Augusta (55-21, 5-1) has won five of six to open the second half and is 23-5 since May 26. The Power (50-24, 2-4) had only been shut out twice before this series. The GreenJackets sent Jeffress to the showers after eight batters in the first, trailing 5-0. Felmy and Tyler Graham each singled in a run, and Jean drove in three with a bases-loaded single. Burriss also singled in the inning, and Jeffress didn't help himself with two walks. The GreenJackets added another run in the fourth off reliever D.J. Lidyard. Marcus Sanders singled and scored on Pill's RBI hit to right to make it 6-0. Final: Helena 8, Missoula (Diamondbacks) 4 Helena Site Game Summary: Helena wins back-to-back Brewer starter Jose Garcia turned in a solid performance, shutting down the Osprey bats for the second time this season as Helena won its second straight game over Missoula. Garcia tossed seven innings of two-hit, two-run ball for Helena and the Brewer bats backed him to win 8-4. With the win Garica becomes the first Brewer pitcher to record two wins. Although Garcia provided Helena with a quality start it was the Osprey who led early, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Connor Janes brought home the run on an RBI groundout. Brewer Caleb Gindl gave Helena the lead when he extended his hitting streak to eight games on a two-out, two-run single in the third inning. Helena led 2-1 after three innings. Helena added three more runs to its lead in its next-at bat. Kurt Crowell and David Fonseca drove in the runs on respective run-scoring singles. In the fifth inning Gindl continued his tear by leading off with a double; Jonathan Lucroy drove him home with a single to increase the lead to 6-1. Osprey hitter Peter Clifford hit a home run off Garcia in the sixth inning to bring the Missoula deficit back to four. Helena, however, pushed two more across in the bottom half of the sixth. The Osprey later scored two runs in the ninth off Corey Frerichs, but could pull no closer as the Brewers prevailed 8-4. Crowell led the Brewers with three hits in five at-bats while Gindl finished the night 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Others with multi-hit games included Lee Haydel, Eric Fryer, and Curt Rindal. By the end of the game Helena raised its team batting average 15 points to .256. Helena will look for a series sweep Wednesday when the Brewers play host to the Osprey at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central). Link while active, text follows: www.helenair.com/articles...2707_1.txt Brewers bruise Osprey By JEFF WINDMUELLER Helena Independent Record Sports Writer Playing the Missoula Osprey for the fifth time since the season started, the Helena Brewers seemed to have figured out their opponent pretty well. Pitcher Jose Garcia threw seven innings, giving up just two runs, while the Brewers backed him up with 13 hits to beat the Osprey 8-4 Tuesday at Kindrick Legion field. Helena is now 4-1 against Missoula (4-4 overall) and will play them three more times before the month?s end. ?Once you start seeing hitters day in and day out in six games (including today?s game) over a short period of time you get an idea, you know what their tendencies are,? said Brewers manager Jeff Isom. ?We?re trying to pitch to what we see will get them out.? And Garcia was accomplishing that pretty well. Though his first pitch hit Eli Rumler, Garcia was thrown a rosin bag to improve his grip and it paid dividends for the right hander. He gave up just two hits while walking one and striking out five. His lone walk to Andrew Fie in the second led to the Osprey?s first score. Fie stole second before advancing on a ground out by Chance Wheeless, then came home on another ground out by Connor Janes. Down by one, the Brewers came around the next inning and began peppering Missoula pitcher Jason Durst. Curt Rindal and Lee Haydel would both score after singling as the Brewers smacked four hits in the inning. Helena kept up the hitting as Durst began to struggle. He hit lead-off batter Eric Newton to start the fourth then gave up consecutive shots to Eric Fryer and Kurt Crowell, all three of which scored. Missoula failed to answer while Helena?s Caleb Gindl continued his strong performance at the plate. The right fielder cracked a triple to start the bottom of the fifth and scored on a blooper by Jonathan Lucroy. Gindl leads the team with 13 hits after going 2-for-4 on Tuesday with three RBI and now has an average of .433. Kurt Crowell led the Brewers in his second game of the season. He went 3-for-5 and now sports an average of .500. ?We struggled early on swinging the bats and now all of a sudden these guys have had a few games under their belt,? Isom said. After being shut out for three innings, the Osprey got a quick blast from Pete Clifford. He hit a solo home run over the left-field wall to bring the score to 6-2 in the top of the sixth. ?That?s part of the game, that?s part of pitching,? said Garcia, who was able to shake it off to get the final two outs of the inning. His teammates reacted with their final two runs in the bottom of the inning. Lee Haydel smacked a line-drive double down third base to bring home Curt Rindal. David Fonseca would also score after bunting and reaching on an error. Durst received the loss after giving up 10 hits and six runs over five innings. He struck out three. Josh Blake replaced him in the sixth and gave up two runs over two innings. Luke Prihoda came in to finish the final inning and walked away with two strike outs. Corey Frerichs took Garcia?s place on the mound in the eighth and ended with four hits and two runs after Sean Coughlin and Andrew Fie scored in the ninth. Garcia is now 2-0 on the season with a 1.93 ERA. He said there was no new plan when facing the Osprey for a second time. ?I felt strong,? he said. ?I was working on locating my pitches.?
