  3. Nashville Pre-Game Audio Chat with Starting Pitcher Manny Parra: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...206-24.mp3 Final: Nashville 9, Round Rock (Astros) 4 Nashville Site Game Summary: Link for Mike Rivera photo, text follows -- www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=2406 Rivera Slam Keys Big Inning In 9-4 Sounds Win ROUND ROCK, Texas ? Mike Rivera belted a grand slam to highlight a seven-run seventh inning as the Nashville Sounds came from behind to post a 9-4 victory over the Round Rock Express on Sunday evening at The Dell Diamond. The victory snapped a two-game skid for the Sounds (44-32), who remain a half-game behind Iowa in the PCL American Conference Northern Division standings. Round Rock grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning against Sounds starter Zach Jackson. Jason Lane led off the frame with a double to left and later scored on a Mark Saccamanno groundout. Lane struck again in the fourth when he lifted a leadoff home run to left off Jackson for a 2-0 Express lead and his third roundtripper of the season. Express starter Mark McLemore turned in a solid effort before being pulled due to a pitch count. The left-hander held the Sounds to one hit (a Jackson double) while striking out five batters over his four innings of work. He threw 72 pitches. Round Rock extended the lead to 3-0 against Jackson in the fifth with three consecutive two-out singles, the last of which by Brooks Conrad plated Josh Anderson. Joe Dillon put the Sounds on the board in the top of the sixth inning with a two-out, two-run home run to left, the veteran?s team-leading 14th roundtripper of the year. The blast, which came on a 3-2 pitch against Express reliever Jared Gothreaux and scored Callix Crabbe, made it a 3-2 contest and could have tied the game had Tony Gwynn not been picked off second base by Gothreaux earlier in the frame. The Express got a run right back in the bottom of the frame. Lane and Cody Ransom opened with consecutive singles to put runners on the corners and chase Jackson from the contest. Saccomanno greeted Sounds reliever Steve Bray with an RBI single to left that plated Lane to extend the Round Rock lead to 4-2. Nashville pulled ahead for the first time all evening with a season-best seven-run seventh inning against Round Rock reliever Jose Rodriguez, who blew his first save in three chances. Brad Nelson greeted the right-hander with a single and pulled the Sounds within a run at 4-3 when Drew Anderson followed with an RBI double to right. After Chris Barnwell drew a walk, pinch-hitter Jose Macias sacrificed the runners to second and third for Gwynn, who delivered a game-tying single to right to knot the score at 4-4. After Crabbe fanned for the second out, Laynce Nix was intentionally walked to load the bases for Dillon, who drew a walk from Rodriguez to force home Barnwell with the go-ahead score. Rivera followed with his grand slam to left, the catcher?s 12th home run of the season and Nashville second grannie, to increase the visitors? lead to 9-4. AUDIO: Mike Rivera's Grand Slam -- www.nashvillesounds.com/a...206-24.mp3 Bray (4-1) was the beneficiary of the Nashville rally and was awarded the victory after working one scoreless inning of relief. Grant Balfour followed by striking out a season-high six batters over three hitless innings for the Sounds to nail down his third save of the year. With the solid outing, the Australian extended his scoreless streak to 19.0 consecutive innings out of the Nashville bullpen. Balfour has allowed only nine hits in those 19 frames over 13 appearances. Rodriguez (0-3) took the loss after being tagged for seven runs on four hits and three walks in his lone frame of action. The teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. CT on Monday night in the third game of the four-game set. Left-hander Manny Parra (0-1, 3.00) will make his second start for the Sounds in search of his first career Triple-A win. Round Rock will counter with right-hander Matt Albers (2-2, 4.11). 4. Final: Huntsville 6, Chattanooga (Reds) 1 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...ewsId=1237 Stars Start Six-Game Home Stand With a Win Lou Palmisano hit a home run and drove in three runs to pace a 13-hit attack in Huntsville?s 6-1 win over Chattanooga Sunday evening at Joe Davis Staduim. The Stars improved to 3-4 in the second half and 40-35 overall, while the Lookouts dropped to 5-2 in the second half and 34-43 overall. Palmisano led off the second inning with his fifth long ball of the year and his first since May 9 at home against Mobile to give the Stars the early lead against Lookout?s starter Camilo Vazquez. Adam Heether?s two-out single in the fourth chased home Alcides Escobar to give the home side a 2-0 advantage. Escobar and Steve Sollmann singled with two outs in the fifth before Ruben Mateo struck out but reached on a wild pitch to keep the inning going. Palmisano then followed with a two-run single to left field to extend the lead to 4-0. Mateo?s run-scoring single and a Brendan Katin run-scoring ground out in the seventh made it 6-0 Huntsville. The Stars had been held to three runs or fewer in 11 of their last 12 games and to six hits or fewer in ten of their last 15 before Sunday night's game. Mark DiFelice threw four scoreless innings for the Stars in a spot start, allowing four singles and striking out five. He has now thrown 23 2/3 innings since last allowing a run May 23 at Mobile. Jeff Housman worked two scoreless innings to earn his third win of the year and Luis Pena nailed down his second save of the season with three innings of work. He allowed the Lookouts' only run in the ninth inning on a pinch-hit, run-scoring ground out by Jay Garthwaite. The series continues Monday night, as Huntsville will send right-hander Will Inman to the hill against Lookouts? right-hander James Avery. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on Sports Radio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. ***Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...amp;coll=1 Stars' bullpen, bats shine Huntsville hands Chattanooga 6-1 loss at Joe Davis By SKIP VAUGHN For The Huntsville Times skip.vaughn@htimes.com Huntsville Stars manager Don Money wants his players to keep the same intensity they had in winning the first-half title in the Southern League North. "You've got to keep going," he said before Sunday night's game against the Chattanooga Lookouts. "The season's a long season. It's 140 games, not 70. "It (the first-half title) takes the pressure off, but the players have to keep playing. It's a long season. This is where they try to elevate their game to go to the next level." The Stars overcame Chattanooga 6-1 before an announced crowd of 2,149 at Joe Davis Stadium. "We hit a home run (by Lou Palmisano), we picked up 13 hits and got some good pitching from everybody," Money said. "It was all bullpen tonight." Huntsville reliever Mark DiFelice made his first start for the Stars and pitched a solid four innings. He allowed four hits and had five strikeouts in extending his scoreless streak to 23 2/3 innings. He left after throwing 72 pitches, 53 for strikes. "My curveball was really good today," said DiFelice, who got the opportunity to start because of an opening created by last week's doubleheader. "My cutter was my go-to pitch when I was down in the count." He throws his fastball 88-89 mph, his cutter 83-85 mph and his curveball 75-76 mph. He expects to make another start Friday. "He did a very nice job," Stars pitching coach Rich Sauveur said. "He's done a nice job all year, throws strikes, changes speeds, knows how to pitch. Just goes out and does a nice job. This kid is probably going to get one more start and he's going back to the pen. I don't expect for him to be here much longer." Palmisano went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. "Just had a good night at the plate," Palmisano said. "Just one of those nights where you're getting good pitches to hit and squaring them up." He opened the scoring in the second with his fifth homer of the season, a towering drive to left. It came on a 3-1 fastball from Chattanooga starter Camilo Vazquez (4-7). "Just looking for a good pitch to hit and it just happened to go out," Palmisano said. "Bad days you roll those over and good days you hit them well." Huntsville (3-4) upped its lead to 2-0 in the fourth on Adam Heether's two-out RBI single. Steve Sollmann and Ruben Mateo singled to start the inning and Sollmann scored on Heether's hit to right. Stars reliever Jeff Housman (3-1) pitched two scoreless innings and got the win while Luis Pena earned his second save. Pena allowed one run and three hits in three innings. Palmisano delivered a two-out, two-run single in the fifth for a 4-0 cushion. With two outs, Alcides Escobar and Sollmann singled. Mateo struck out but reached first on a wild pitch by Vazquez. Palmisano singled to left to score Escobar and Sollmann. Mateo hit an RBI single in the seventh to make it 5-0. Escobar had a leadoff hit, stole second and scored on Mateo's one-out hit to left. Pinch runner Mel Stocker stole second, advanced to third on Palmisano's hit and scored on Brendan Katin's groundout. Chattanooga (5-2) scored its lone run in the ninth on Jay Garthwaite's RBI groundout off Pena. The second game of the six-game series is tonight at 7:05 at Joe Davis Stadium. Scheduled starters are Chattanooga's James Avery (6-7, 5.29) and Huntsville's Will Inman (0-2, 9.35). 5. Huntsville Times: New Stars shortstop Alcides Escobar was taking batting practice before a game against the Smokies this week when he found out some exciting news: He'd be participating in the XM Satellite All-Star Futures game July 8 in San Francisco as part of the MLB All-Star weekend festivities. Escobar will represent the World Team against the United States, much like Brewers pitcher and former Star Yovani Gallardo did last year. Also, ex-Huntsville and current Milwaukee third baseman Ryan Braun participated last season. "I'm very, very happy," Escobar said. "I'm playing hard for the rest of the season, and when September comes, who knows? You may go to the big leagues. I'm working every day." The 20-year-old earned a call-up from Brevard County by hitting .325 with 25 RBIs and eight doubles. Heading into Saturday, he was hitting .235 for the Stars with four RBIs and two steals in 17 at-bats after replacing Yohannis Perez, who was sent down at the end of the first half. "He deserves it," Stars manager Don Money said of Escobar. "He's playing solid defense and helping us at the plate now. He just needs more time." Perez needs some extra time, too. He showed strong defense but struggled at the plate, batting .195 with 55 strikeouts in 56 games with the Stars. The defector from Cuba hadn't played for two seasons and the layoff was obvious offensively as struggled making contact and pulling the ball.

  7. Link while active, text follows: www.helenair.com/articles...407_01.txt Sox silence Brewers bats By TOM COTTON, Helena Independent Record Sports Editor Five games into the season, the Helena Brewers? pitching and defense is definitely ahead of its offense. The Brewers? bats once again went into hibernation Saturday night as they fell 4-2 to the Great Falls White Sox. Helena has scored just two runs in each of its last three games and they have won just one of those contests. Great Falls had Aaron Poreda on the mound in Saturday?s game. Poreda, a 6-foot-6 left hander, was Chicago?s first-round pick earlier this month in the First Year Player Draft. His fastball has been clocked in the mid-90s and he went to that pitch early and often against Helena. The University of San Francisco product struck out five in his professional debut and didn?t give up a hit until the fourth inning. ?I was nervous,? Poreda said. ?There was a lot of hype and pressure on me so I wanted to turn up the heat. I do better when the pressure is on.? The Brewers went down meekly in the first three innings, but finally broke through in the fourth. A single by Jonathan Lucroy started a run of three straight singles. The final hit in that string was a soft liner by Helena?s Steffan Wilson, which brought Lucroy home. That tied the contest at 1-1. The White Sox scored first when Christian Marerro hit an RBI double in the second. Great Falls took the lead for good in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Greg Paiml. After that score, both teams? bullpens settled down until the last two innings. The White Sox extended their lead in the eighth thanks to an RBI ground out by Josh Morgan and an RBI double by Marerro. Great Falls, however, had to endure some nervous moments before closing out the win. ?We got better at bats later in the game,? said Helena manager Jeff Isom. ?No question, we have to get our bats going and we feel like we have the personnel to do that.? In the eighth inning, Helena trailed 4-1 but looked like they could rally past the White Sox. Eric Farris got the fans on their feet with one out, when he smacked a triple that landed at the base of the right-field wall. He was brought home on a single by Lucroy, which was followed by a single by Caleb Gindl. Gindl continued his hot start by going 3-for-4 in the contest and is hitting .444 after five games. The 18-year-old from Pace, Fla., was in the cleanup spot for the Brewers on Saturday. ?That guy can swing the bat,? Isom said. ?He has made the adjustment to pro ball and he is an exciting kid to see play.? The eighth-inning rally died, however, when the White Sox turned a double play to end the threat. Helena also had the tying run at the plate with two outs in the ninth, but Great Falls reliever Ronnie Morales registered a strikeout to get the save. Isom was pleased with the way his team pitched. Brock Kjeldgaard got the start and went five solid innings before Donovan Hand and Nick Tyson came in for the last four innings. The two teams will meet again today at 4:05 PM (5:05 Central) at Kindrick Legion Field. Roque Mercedes is the probable starter for Helena. 8. Helena Site Game Summary: Helena Loses Second in a Row HELENA?Despite bringing the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning the Helena Brewers fell to the Great Falls White Sox for the second night in a row. With two outs and one runner on Brewer pinch-hitter Eric Newton came to the plate with a chance to tie things up. Instead White Sox pitcher Ronald Morales got a big strikeout to end the game. The Brewers fell behind in the second inning 1-0 and later tied the game in the fourth inning, but the White Sox outscored Helena the rest of the way for a 4-2 Great Falls win. Three consecutive singles from Brewers Jonathan Lucroy, Caleb Gindl, and Steffan Wilson tied the game at one apiece, but Helena failed to take a lead. During their ensuing at-bat the White Sox added a run in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 advantage. Great Falls later added two more runs in the eighth inning. The Brewers tried to get things going in their half of the eighth and ninth innings, but could score only more run. Eric Farris hit a one-out triple to the right-centerfield alley during the eighth and Lucroy drove him in to cut the lead to 4-2. Helena advanced runners to second and third with one out, but an inning-ending double play quelled the threat. With the loss Helena falls to 2-3 while Great Falls improves to 3-2. The Brewers will try to salvage the series with the White Sox when they take the field 4:05 PM Sunday (5:05 Central) against Great Falls.

The Nashville Sounds suffered a 6-1 loss to the Round Rock Express on Saturday evening at The Dell Diamond in the opener of a four-game series. With the defeat, the Sounds (43-32) suffered back-to-back losses for the first time since late May and fell out of first place in the PCL American Conference Northern Division, dropping a half-game behind Iowa in the standings. Round Rock starter Philip Barzilla (7-5) worked a complete game to earn the victory. The southpaw allowed one run on six hits over his nine innings of work. The Sounds grabbed an early lead against the Express, plating the game?s first run in the top of the first inning. Tony Gwynn led off with a triple and scored two batters later on Laynce Nix?s RBI single off Barzilla. AUDIO: Laynce Nix RBI Single -- www.nashvillesounds.com/a...206-23.mp3 Round Rock rallied for three runs against Sounds starter Chris Oxspring in the bottom of the second inning to grab a 3-1 lead. Former Brewer farmhand Danny Klassen (1993 - 1997) walked to open the frame and moved to second on a Cody Ransom single. Mark Saccamanno tied the contest with an RBI double to center that left runners on second and third. Two batters later, Danny Ardoin ripped an RBI double to left that scored Ransom with the go-ahead run. Nix gunned down Saccamanno at the plate as he attempted to score a second run on the play. Barzilla helped his own cause by driving in the third run of the inning when he followed with an RBI single off Jackson. The Express added single runs in the fourth and sixth to increase the advantage to 5-1 before capping off the evening?s scoring on Josh Anderson?s two-out RBI triple in the eighth against Greg Aquino. After the first inning, Nashville failed to advance another runner to second base until the ninth as Barzilla allowed only two hits from the second through eighth frames to keep the Sounds at bay. Oxspring (6-4) had a four-game winning streak snapped as he suffered the loss for the Sounds. The right-hander surrendered four runs on seven hits over six innings, walking two batters while striking out six. The teams meet again at 7:05 p.m. CT on Sunday evening. Left-hander Zach Jackson (8-3, 4.61) will take the hill for the Sounds to face Round Rock southpaw Mark McLemore (0-1, 3.05). 22. Final: Tennessee (Cubs) 2, Huntsville 1 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/n...ewsId=1235 Stars Suffer Disappointing Loss to Finish Series with Smokies Huntsville committed two costly errors and Tennessee?s bullpen tossed four scoreless innings to preserve a 2-1 win in the final of a six-game set Saturday night at Smokies Park. The Smokies took four out of six to begin the second half to improve to 40-34 overall, while the Stars dropped to 39-35 overall. Steve Moss led off the game with a single, moved to second base on a ground ball out and scored on a single by Lou Palmisano to give the Stars a 1-0 lead. Huntsville scored in the first inning in four of the six games in the series but wound up losing three of those games. Sam Fuld and Issmael Salas started the home first with singles before Jake Fox hit a potential double play grounder to third base. Adam Heether fielded and threw to Hernan Iribarren for the force at second base but first baseman Steve Sollmann could not handle the relay throw, allowing Fox to reach safely and Fuld to score from third to tie the game. Jorge Cortes singled with one out in the home fourth and advanced to second base with two outs when Iribarren mishandled a ground ball hit by Smokies? starter Paul Schappert. The inning continued and Sam Fuld made the Stars pay with a single to left field that plated Cortes with what turned out to be the winning run. Stars? starter Sam Narron suffered the hard-luck loss to fall to 3-6 after giving up two unearned runs in six innings. He gave up seven hits, walked two and fanned three. Bo Hall and Robert Hinton each tossed a scoreless inning in relief. Billy Petrick worked 2 1/3 scoreless innings behind Schappert and was followed to the hill by Jerry Blevins, who retired both batters he faced. Jim Henderson took over in the ninth and retired the first two batters he faced before giving up singles to Brendan Katin and Hernan Iribarren. However, the right-hander squelched the threat by striking out Alcides Escobar to end the game and record his second save of the series and sixth of the season. The Stars have been held to three runs or fewer in 11 of their last 12 games. The Stars return home on Sunday to begin a six-game series with Chattanooga, as right-hander Mark DiFelice will take the mound for Huntsville against Lookouts? left-hander Camilo Vazquez. DiFelice gets a spot start due to the doubleheader the Stars played earlier this week. Coverage of the game begins at 5:50 p.m. central time and can be heard locally on SportsRadio 730 WUMP and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. Huntsville Box Score: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_tenaax_1 Huntsville Game Log: As noted above, the lead runner in the Smokies' first inning scored from second base on Steve Sollmann's drop of the double-play relay throw at first base. Otherwise, you can't assume the double play and no error would have been charged. That's why the first-inning run was unearned... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_tenaax_1
