Amateur Scouting Department Shakeup
Jim Goulart replied to Jim Goulart's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
Technically not draft-related, as it's on the pro scouting side, but in addition, Toney Howell was named a special assistant to the GM for the Dodgers. Howell, who joins the Dodgers from the Milwaukee Brewers organization where he was a professional scout, has spent time with the Rangers and Cubs in their respective scouting departments as well. -
Amateur Scouting Department Shakeup
Jim Goulart posted a topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
Brewer Press Release: The Milwaukee Brewers and Jack Zduriencik, Senior Assistant to the General Manager and Director of Amateur Scouting, today announced the hiring of the following Amateur Scouts: Rene Mons - New England Ed Fastia - New York / New Jersey Brian Sankey - South Texas / Louisiana Kevin Ellis - North Texas / Oklahoma / Kansas / Missouri / Arkansas Josh Belovsky - Southern California ***Jesse Levis, who scouted the northeast for one year (2006) has left to join the Red Sox pro scouting ranks, I believe. Rene Mons is a former assistant scouting director with the Padres and has worked as San Diego's northeast guy as well. Ed Fastia, who was a part-time New York scout, moves into NY/NJ, as the Brewers now split the "Northeast" into two sections. I believe Brian Sankey was a Dodger first base farmhand out of Boston College in the mid 90's, and recently was an assistant coach at BC. Some info on Kevin Ellis from this Texas community college: www.mclennan.edu/athletics/?id=kellis Josh Belovsky was a Red Sox farmhand in 1999 and 2000 (reliever), and also has coaching experience on the amateur level. Scouts Ray Montgomery (South Texas), Jim Stevenson (KS /OK, etc.), and Bruce Seid (Southern Cal), previous scouts in the areas noted above, remain with the organization. Montgomery and Seid are now cross-checkers for their region, and Stevenson has joined the pro scouting staff. Earlier this offseason, former Brewer pro scout "J" Harrison became the Reds director of professional scouting. I've plugged it too many times in the past, and it was written nearly five (wow, five) years ago, but the definitive article on life as a Brewer amateur scout, at least as told by yours truly http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif www.brewerfan.net/ViewArt...ticleId=56 -

Scottsdale loses, 6-5 in ten innings, Tuesday. Eight games remain. Dennis Sarfate still managing to strand baserunners he might put on: Phoenix Bottom 9th - Pitcher Change: Dennis Sarfate replaces Matt Wilhite. - Javon Moran flies out to right fielder Fred Lewis. - Drew Anderson (not the Brewer Drew Anderson) singles on a ground ball to right fielder Fred Lewis. - Fernando Perez strikes out swinging. - With Ben Zobrist batting, Drew Anderson steals (3) 2nd base. - Ben Zobrist walks. - Curtis Thigpen strikes out swinging. Ryan Braun singled in the 1st, struck out on a foul tip with the bases loaded to end the 2nd, and hit a sacrifice fly in the 4th as part of a 1-for-4 day. Steve Moss idle. Vinny's first double is at the 1:07:00 mark. His second is at the 1:36:00 mark. Both doubles for "Vincent" (announcer) came on deep counts. First one was smoked... While Ryan's Brevard County numbers were solid in 2006, his Manatee numbers paled in comparison to the huge numbers he posted at Huntsville (a similar pitchers' park and league)and in the AFL. What worked for him at AA? Was it particular instruction from AA hitting coach Sandy Guerrero, or did something else just "click"? How would Ryan describe himself as a hitter (what pitches does he handle best, lay off at the proper time, etc.)? Has it been hard to avoid being too anxious about getting to Milwaukee, given the incredible success fellow draftee Ryan Zimmerman has had in Washington? Is he looking forward to facing Royals pitcher Ryan Braun someday? Thanks for soliciting our questions.

Manny Parra starts Monday, no audio. Vinny Rottino batting 5th at DH. Looks like a day off for Ryan Braun and Steve Moss. Gameday is available for Scottsdale: www.minorleaguebaseball.c.../index.jsp MiLB.com Notebook: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...p;sid=l119 GETTING BRAUN-Y: Ryan Braun was Milwaukee's top pick in the 2005 draft and has done nothing over the last year and a half to make anyone think the pick wasn't a wise one. His latest stint in the AFL is serving as just another reminder of what the folks in Wisconsin have can expect when Braun reaches their state, possibly as soon as this season. He's sixth in the league in hitting (.344), second in homers (six), second in RBIs (22), second in doubles (seven), second in slugging percentage (.734), first in extra-base hits (13) and third in suns scored (18). -

Scottsdale wins Saturday, 4-2 -- now .500 on the season at 11-11 Alec Zumwalt and Dennis Sarfate (Dennis gets the save) each walked two in their respective scoreless innings. Mesa Top 5th - Pitcher Change: Alec Zumwalt replaces Corwin Malone. - Doug Deeds strikes out swinging. - David Winfree walks. - Anthony Raglani singles on a soft ground ball to third baseman Ryan Braun. David Winfree to 2nd. - Chin Lung Hu out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Alec Zumwalt to first baseman Travis Ishikawa. David Winfree to 3rd. Anthony Raglani to 2nd. - Bobby Malek walks. - Brooks Conrad grounds out, second baseman Mark Reynolds to first baseman Travis Ishikawa. In ten innings, Zumwalt has allowed 13 hits and 12 walks while striking out only two. Little known nugget - full name is Sean Alexander Zumwalt. Mesa Top 9th - Pitcher Change: Dennis Sarfate replaces Mike Schultz. - Doug Deeds strikes out swinging. - Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Matt Moses replaces David Winfree. - Matt Moses walks. - With Anthony Raglani batting, Dennis Sarfate picks off Matt Moses at 1st on throw to Travis Ishikawa. - Anthony Raglani walks. - Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Eric Patterson replaces Chin Lung Hu. - Eric Patterson called out on strikes. Sarfate, meanwhile, has allowed 11 hits in 11 innings, walked six, and struck out 19. One rough outing has skewed his numbers, he's having a heck of a fall season. Even as a short reliever, pending results of other games on Saturday, Dennis leads the entire league in K's. Ryan Braun (third base) seemingly is guaranteed to reach base at least twice each game, or so it seems: - flies out to right fielder Anthony Raglani in foul territory in the 1st, manon 3rd, one out -- rare missed RBI opportunity - doubles (7) on a fly ball to left field leading off the 4th, later scores - walks in the 5th, men on 1st and 2nd, one out - lines into double play to second baseman in the 7th, man on 3rd gets doubled off to end the inning Vinny Rottino had the day off. Steve Moss (left field) was 1-for-2. - called out on strikes to end the 2nd, man on 3rd. - doubles (2) on a sharp ground ball to left field in the 5th, none out, man on 1st moves to 3rd; Moss later scores - out on a sacrifice bunt in the 6th, moves runner to 2nd with two out - perhaps bunting for a hit, but gets the scorer's ruling www.minorleaguebaseball.c...n_surwin_1 Team is idle Sunday, next game is Monday afternoon, next audio is Tuesday afternoon. -
Your 2006 Arizona Brewers -- Latest: Omar Aguilar
Jim Goulart replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Boy, there's still plenty of reason to be excited about this kid: Link while active, text follows -- www.mercedsunstar.com/lif...4778c.html Ready to pitch In By Dhyana Levey DLEVEY@MERCEDSUN-STAR.COM Livingston, CA -- Omar Aguilar is almost fully recovered from an arm injury -- and his dream of pitching in the major leagues has been reborn. Now a member of the Milwaukee Brewers organization, the 21-year-old Livingston native wants to make sure other young athletes in this area don't make the same mistakes he did. Aguilar is back in Livingston, on break and awaiting spring training in Arizona. From there, he will find out which minor league affiliate he will play for. But in the meantime, he is offering lessons to children with dreams of a pitching career. He currently coaches his first student at the Merced College baseball field and hopes more will join. "I was throwing in ways that stress the ligaments," he said. "I never had a pitching coach, I did my own stuff. That's what led to my injury." In January 2005, he tore a ligament in his right elbow during a Merced College game. That didn't stop the Brewers from drafting him and paying for his "Tommy John" surgery. Also known as an ulnar collateral ligament replacement surgery, this major medical procedure is common among pitchers. After about eight months of rehabilitation, he was able to play a couple games with the Brewers' Arizona rookie ball team before returning to Livingston. He now coaches Hoover Middle School student Scott Rowan, 13, on Thursday evenings in Merced. Rowan pitches for his school's baseball team and wants to continue playing the position. "I love controlling the game and being in a position that starts it all," he said. "But I've been worried about my mechanics and want to avoid future injuries." Rowan said he is learning how to keep his shoulders intact while keeping good balance in his pitching motions. "He taught me how to stay focused and not let your emotions show so the batters know you are on top of the game," he said. Aguilar started playing Little League baseball at age 5 in Livingston. "When I was young, everyone saw that I threw hard," he said. "I wanted to hit more than pitch. I think every kid wants to hit that home run at the end of the ninth inning ... but I was better at pitching." His father died of alcohol poisoning when he was 5. His mother, Irma, raised him and his two sisters. "Mom was the one who always went to the games, brought me Gatorade," he said with a smile. He pitched for Livingston High School's baseball team, making the all-conference team three years in a row. The San Francisco Giants took notice of his skills during his senior year. Aguilar was drafted by the Giants in the 27th round. If he accepted, he could have started in their rookie ball or minor league team and move up. He turned it down. "I wanted to go to college," he said. "I also wanted more money." He graduated high school in 2003 and signed up at Merced College to study criminal justice. He took his 98-mph fastball to the Merced College baseball team. A Giants scout came calling again, selecting him in the eighth round of the draft. "Going from a small high school to being drafted -- that's a big deal," said Matt Winton, Livingston High School baseball coach. "Offers were going back and forth." Aguilar turned the Giants' offer down again. "I got caught up in the whole situation," Aguilar said. "I thought I was worth more money." In retrospect, he said he wishes he had accepted. After his sophomore year in college, he tore a ligament in his elbow. A scout from the Brewers contacted him in May 2005. "They said 'we know you are hurt. We'll help you recover,' " Aguilar said. "The Brewers were the only ones interested in accepting me now." He accepted the offer and had his surgery in Arizona the following November, about one year ago. In early February he'll start spring training. "I'm excited for him," Winton said. "When he signed, he was relieved. I'm happy he got to one of his goals." Aguilar hopes after spring training he'll make it to the Brewers' minor league team, the West Virginia Power. If he never makes it into the major leagues, his backup plan is to become a police officer. "But I hope I'll make it," he said. "Everyone hopes they'll make it." Omar Aguilar, 21, of Livingston wants to teach children the right way to pitch, so they don't get the same injury he did while pitching at Merced College. He is teaching children like Scott Rowan, 13, of Merced the proper way to pitch a baseball, before he goes to Arizona to start spring training for the Milwaukee Brewers organization. http://www.mercedsunstar.com/images/xtq_pictures/20061104-images/109293-45406.jpg http://www.mercedsunstar.com/images/xtq_pictures/20061104-images/109293-45405.jpg -
Wow, what a miserable night in Hawaii. Darren Ford goes 0-for-6 with five K's (now at .193, 28 K's in 57 AB's -- combined with his regular season, that's 161 K's in 548 AB's). Lorenzo Cain (.206) went 0-for-5. He walked once. Joe Thatcher blew the save in the 9th, allowed three runs, including his first and only earned run of the season (two of his runs scored after his departure and were unearned). North Shore then scored two in the bottom of the 9th to tie things up. Robert Hinton was fantastic in the 10th, coming in to bail out his teammate from a one-out, men on 1st and 2nd jam. In another big jam in the 11th, Hinton nearly pitched out of it, but was done in by his shortstop's error, and he took the loss without surrendering an earned run. Haudricourt: www.jsonline.com/story/in...?id=526197 Baseball America magazine, which first reported the signing Just pointing out we contacted BA and directed them to our link. BA has the contacts and resources to get in touch with folks like the players' agent and those from the Brewer front office, and then post the requisite quotes, so we asked them to follow-up for us. We told BA staff there was no need to credit us, since it was their background story from August that led up to our posting. The Journal's delay was justified in that there's virtually no one on the big league beat other than Haudricourt. Our posting came the morning after the World Series ended, on a Saturday yet, and TH was wrapping up his day-to-day coverage of all the postseason. Certainly there were some days off due after that. More telling is that there's nobody backing up at the JS that could have grabbed the news sooner. But let's not make this a thread on news sources and such, but continue any focus on the Perez signing itself. Just glad we could "push" the news along to you.
