  6. On the Halloween archive, the game (and Manny Parra's first inning) begin at the 6:00 minute mark. The painful first-inning-only audio (the announcer's fine -- it's Manny and his defensive teammates that were brutal), lasts from that 6:00 minute mark all the way until the 23:00 minute mark. www.minorleaguebaseball.c...p?sid=l119 The Scorpions play this afternoon (no audio), then are next available on audio Thursday evening at 9:00 Central (and on subsequent archive).

Link while active, text follows: www.floridatoday.com/apps.../611010386 County puts $2.6M in play to upgrade stadium BY JAMES DEAN FLORIDA TODAY Brevard County will pay at least $2.6 million to fix leaking roofs, peeling paint and flood-prone dugouts at Space Coast Stadium before the Washington Nationals return for spring training in February. That's about five times more than the county had budgeted for upgrades this year on the 12-year-old stadium, but $1 million less than new team owners requested last month. "The building's turned into a sponge," Andy Dunn, the team's director of player development, told county commissioners Tuesday. The commissioners voted unanimously to get started on the work with $2.6 million, which has been generated by hotel taxes paid by tourists. If that's not enough, they'll consider borrowing to finish the work by Feb. 1. "We need to make sure we take care of it all," Commission Chairwoman Helen Voltz said. The county is responsible for capital improvements under the terms of a stadium lease that expires in 2017, while the Nationals handle operations and maintenance. Though the county doesn't make money from ticket sales or concessions, tourism officials estimate Brevard's economy gains about $12 million annually from spring training. Because county staff had already budgeted for some of the upgrades and the Nationals' requests are still being reviewed, the total project cost could drop, Assistant County Manager Stockton Whitten said. So far, the county has agreed to replace canopies over seats, repair leaky roofs and improve field and dugout drainage. Michael Shapiro, the Nationals' senior vice president for business affairs, told Whitten in a letter last week that because of leaks and flooding, "basic sanitation and cleanup must be achieved before the facility can be safe for patrons, ballplayers and staff." "The importance of addressing these substantial health and safety items can't be minimized," he wrote.
  8. Honu/Sharks POSTPONED Due to an unexpected power outage in Waipahu, Tuesday night's game between the Honu and Sharks at Hans L'Orange Field has been postponed. The game will be made up this Wednesday, November 1, in a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 PM (9:00 PM Central).
  9. Scottsdale wins, 7-6, in 11 innings Ryan Braun on base four times (single, double, two walks) in six AB's, committed a throwing error on a force attempt. 10. I've migrated the old Alumni thread that was pinned to the top of this forum to a staging area for some analysis, updates and re-tooling. It'll be back down the road. In the meantime, the occasional update will be added here. Just in the last two seasons, two former Brewer farmhands -- lefty Craig Breslow, expected to be carried on Boston's 40-man all of this coming off-season, and catcher Eliezer Alfonso, who had a strong campaign for the Giants in 2006, both made it to the major leagues after their release by the Brewers. Not that big a deal, except for the fact that each had to take a job with an independent league team before getting back to afffiliated ball. Here's the latest Brewer to work his way back to affiliated ball: www.americanassociationba...1162319812 FROST FORECASTED IN CHICAGO St. Paul Catcher Sold to White Sox The American Association of Independent Professional Baseball announced today the contract of St. Paul Saints C Jeremy Frost has been sold to the Chicago White Sox. He is the fourth American Association player purchased by a major league organization since the end of the season. Fort Worth?s RHP Matt Harrington and INF Shawn Williams were sold to the Chicago Cubs and Tampa Bay Devil Rays respectively while Pensacola Pelicans? RHP Tony Pierce went to the Atlanta Braves. Frost, who turns 27 November 19, is expected to have a shot at making the Sox?s AA team in Birmingham in 2007. ?He?s a versatile guy who has power and the bonus of being a better than average runner for a catcher,? said St. Paul manager George Tsamis, who has had 21 player contracts sold to MLB organizations since joining St. Paul in 2003. ?He played wherever we asked him to and did a lot of little things very well. He?s earned this chance.? Frost easily led all American Association catchers last season by throwing out 30 of a potential 64 base stealers. In two seasons at St. Paul, Frost hit 26 home runs with 93 RBI and stole 35 bases in 176 games. When he first arrived with the Saints in 2005, the Floridian spent a majority of his playing time in right field. He moved behind the plate on a regular basis a month into the season and has been a fixture there ever since. The ex-Central Florida star was originally drafted in the 10th round by Milwaukee in 2002. Prior to coming to St. Paul, he played three seasons in the Brewers? system, advancing as high as High Desert in the Class A California League. 11. As noted in the Hawaii Winter League thread, Mike Lum, hitting coach at West Virginia in 2006, replaces recently-promoted Jim Skaalen as roving minor league hitting coordinator. I'm sure at some point the Brewers' site will begin making their own announcements on items such as this, but until then, Brewerfan's glad to be of service http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif .
  12. Link while active, text follows: www.honoluluadvertiser.co...052/SPORTS Working in Winter enjoyable to Lum By Stacy Kaneshiro Honolulu Advertiser Staff Writer Since graduating from Roosevelt High in 1963, the only profession Mike Lum has known is baseball. But with no pro team in Hawai'i since the Islanders of the Pacific Coast League left after the 1987 season, it was hard for Lum to find a job here. But Hawaii Winter Baseball returned and Lum found work ? albeit a temporary one, lasting just seven weeks ? as hitting coach for the North Shore Honu. "It's nice to get back home and work," Lum said. "With my business, there's no opportunity to come back to Hawai'i and work. There's been no professional teams until now." The irony is this might be his last time coaching in HWB. His duties have changed with the Milwaukee Brewers, as he was recently named hitting coordinator. He was promoted from hitting coach at Low-A West Virginia to succeed Jim Skaalen, who was named hitting coach for the Brewers. The coaching staffs of HWB are made up of managers and coaches of minor league teams. (Coordinators have made brief appearances this season. New York Yankees pitching instructor Nardi Contreras was on hand to watch the four Yankees pitchers ? Joba Chamberlain, Ian Kennedy, Christian Garcia and Jeff Marquez ? last week. Los Angeles Dodgers hitting coordinator Bill Robinson came to observe prospects Blake DeWitt (infielder), Cory Dunlap (first base) and Xavier Paul (outfielder) as well as pitchers Wesley Wright and Zachary Hammes.) "I'm going back to coordinating," Lum said. "I'll be roving again. I interviewed for the big league job with the Brewers, (as) did the hitting coordinator (Skaalen). He's been there four, five years. He was chosen, which is great because he knows the players in the big leagues. He's been around those guys. He and I worked very well together and I think our relationship will continue, with he being the big league coach and I being the roving guy." Lum returns to the type of work he had done for 16 years with the Chicago White Sox. But his contract was not renewed after the 2005 season. He hooked up with the Brewers in January, but the only opening was at West Virginia of the South Atlantic League. "I was a little reluctant at first when they said the position they had open was for a hitting coach in the South Atlantic League, which is A-ball," Lum said. "I thought about it for a day and said, 'I think this will be a great opportunity for me to do something different,' and it was the best summer I had. I loved it." By being here, he also gets to work with Brewer prospects Lorenzo Cain and Darren Ford, who were both outfielders at West Virginia. Cain batted .307 and had 34 steals, while Ford batted .283 with 69 steals. "I think these guys have a chance to become impact players," Lum said.
  13. Hinton Pitcher of the Week: www.hawaiiwinterbaseball....10-30.aspx In a close race for Pitcher of the Week honors, Robert Hinton came out on top. The dependable Honu reliever appeared in two games this week, pitching a combined five innings, while allowing only one hit. He struck out seven while walking none, earning a win and a save. Hinton, a New York Mets prospect (oh, well), has posted a 2.51 ERA on the season, with a 1-0 record and one save. He has struck out 19 while walking only two. He played for class-A Brevard County during the regular season. http://www.hawaiiwinterbaseball.com/images/news/hinton.JPG http://www.hawaiiwinterbaseball.com/images/news/hinton2.JPG

  16. Baseball America -- Link, text follows: www.baseballamerica.com/t...62734.html Cuban Defectors Find New Homes By John Manuel Need evidence that Major League Baseball's revenue sharing is working and that the sport is healthy financially? Agent Jaime Torres said that three of his most recent Cuban defector clients have reached agreement with major league organizations, and the two who received significant money--righthander Yuslan Herrera and shortstop Yohannis Perez--signed not with the Yankees, Mets, Red Sox or Dodgers, or any other large-revenue clubs. Perez, 24, signed with the Brewers on a minor league contract. Herrera, 25, has finalized a deal on a major league contract with the Pirates, though the deal is not official pending Herrera passing a physical. A third defector, infielder Yunesky Sanchez, signed with the Diamondbacks on a minor league contract. Torres did not disclose financial terms. Herrera has had success in Cuba, with a career 18-7, 3.72 record. Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield said nothing was official with Herrera, though Torres said the physical is the only legal obstacle to the signing. He confirmed the organization's interest in Herrera, saying the Pirates have "seen him a few times in the Dominican. I know there's interest from other clubs. I just don't want to comment until it's really official." The 6-foot-2, 200-pound righthander, who is still working out in Santo Domingo in the Dominican, has shown command of a fringy fastball and what Torres termed an above-average curveball, and one scout liked him a lot. "He's got an above-average split-finger (fastball) and was 88-92," the scout said after seeing Herrera pitch in a workout in August. "I could see his velocity jumping up to 90-94 once he gets into a system and he could very easily be a No. 4 starter in the big leagues." Perez has earned comparisons to Mariners shorstop Yuniesky Betancourt for his speed and build. He's also an above-average runner. Because of his defection, he hasn't played in an organized league in two years. Brewers assistant GM Gord Ash confirmed that Perez has agreed to terms with the organization, though he still has some red tape to get through. "We hope to have him in our winter program in Arizona and then in big league camp (in spring training)," Ash said. Both players had trouble being "unblocked" by the U.S. Treasury Department (a process Cuban players must deal with due to cool American-Cuban relations and Cuba's designation as a state sponsor of terrorism), and neither was able to obtain a visa in time for instructional league. Torres said neither has plans to play winter ball either. They are expected to come to the U.S. and begin play in February in spring training.

  19. Latest new name was caught by the Nashville staff: Right-hander Luther Hackman, who joined the Sounds late in the season for his second stint with the club (also 2004), is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA (1 Er / 3.0 IP) with two strikeouts in one start for Hermosillo, where he is a teammate of fellow Brewers farmhand Mike Jones.
  20. Link while active, text follows: www.advancetitan.com/stor...story=5502 Yost makes the leap from Oshkosh to the minors by Tyler Maas, of the Advance Titan University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh From the first pitch of spring training, to the grueling 162-game regular season schedule, to the pressure of the playoffs, Major League Baseball players strive for one common goal: winning the World Series. As the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Detroit Tigers to win World Series crown Friday, players like Ned Yost IV watched, waited and hoped for their chance to one day play in the major leagues and compete for such glory. Yost spent 2005 playing first base for the UW-Oshkosh baseball team. He transferred to Oshkosh from Dallas Baptist University after breaking his wrist. He spent his first two seasons at the University of Georgia, a Division I school, where he struggled for regular playing time and at bats. ?My goal in playing collegiate ball was to get drafted,? Yost said. ?I knew that I needed to leave and go to a school where I could play every day.? Oshkosh senior Adam Roos played with Yost during the 2005 season and thinks of him as a very talented player. ?He is a hard-nosed player who is not afraid,? Roos said. ?He was the guy to ?clutch up? and make the key plays at first base or drive in the winning run from second base.? During his time at Oshkosh, Yost posted a .413 batting average with 11 home runs and 42 runs batted in during the 38 games he donned a Titan uniform. ?I totally enjoyed my time at UWO,? Yost said. ?I had a blast playing under Tom Lechnir and I also made some really good friends.? Prior to the 2005 Major League Baseball amateur draft, Yost signed a professional contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. Yost?s father, also named Ned, once played for and now manages the Brewers. ?It was a great feeling,? Yost said. ?Just to sign a contract was awesome, but also knowing that it was with the team my father was the manager of and to maybe one day have the opportunity to play under him made it even better.? Yost feels no additional pressure being the son of his potential future manager. He believes he belongs in the Brewers farm system just as much as any other player. ?I know that I am here because of the way that I can play,? Yost said. ?None of my teammates ever put pressure on me.? Ryan Crew began playing with Yost this year on the West Virginia Power, the Brewers? Low-A minor league affiliate. By season?s end, both had been advanced to High-A Brevard County (Fla). ?As a member of the Power, he started as a role player,? Crew said. ?Around mid-season he became the go-to guy relied upon for the big hits.? In the combined 117 games Yost spent at West Virginia and Brevard County in his first minor league season, he hit .259 with seven home runs, 52 runs batted in and over 100 hits. Crew, a friend who keeps in contact with Yost in the off-season, sees him the same way he sees any other player, but with a bit more at stake. ?Minor league players have tons of pressure placed upon them every season,? Crew said. ?Having people, critics and fans constantly judge you in the way some do for Ned is indescribable.? Still, teammates remain confident he will continue to overcome speculation and work his way toward a spot on a major league roster. ?He has the same goal as everyone else around him with some extra incentive to achieve it and it shows in his work ethic,? Crew said. ?He?s always in the cages doing extra and whatever he can to make it to his objective of becoming a big leaguer and proving some people wrong along the way.?
  21. North Shore scores five in the 2nd ining and wins, 5-3 Lefty "Super" Joe Thatcher throws two more scoreless innings and runs his season-long scoreless streak to 14 2/3 innings over eight appearances, with fine peripheral stats as well. Darren Ford had a one-out, two-run double and finished 1-for-4 (two K's, thrown out on a bunt attempt leading off the 4th). Day off for Lorenzo Cain. 22. Miscellaneous Southern League and Huntsville updates: Link while active, text follows: www.knoxnews.com/kns/smok...71,00.html Smokies make pitch for all-star game By NICK GATES, gates@knews.com KNOXVILLE - There is a good chance Smokies Park will host the Southern League All-Star Game again in either 2009 or 2010. The seven-year-old stadium was the site of the Class AA minor league's midsummer classic in 2001 and 2002. "We would like to host the game again," Tennessee Smokies general manager Brian Cox said. The SL instituted a rotating schedule after the Smokies hosted the annual game matching the best prospects from the Northern Division against the cream of the crop from the Southern Division on consecutive years. The Smokies' turn wasn't supposed to come around again until 2012. The Mississippi Braves will host the 2007 game in Pearl, Miss., and the 2008 game will be played in Zebulon, N.C., home of the Carolina Mudcats. Birmingham, Huntsville and West Tenn are the only league cities that have not hosted the game since 2002. But the Huntsville Stars and West Tenn Diamond Jaxx have expressed little interest in hosting the game during last week's league meetings in Pearl. Attendance has been in decline in Huntsville and Jackson, where the Diamond Jaxx are in the process of being sold. That likely will improve the odds of the Smokies hosting the game again sooner than anticipated. Representatives from each of the league's 10 cities also proposed each team bring two uniform tops for each series in 2007. "That'll allow fans in each city to see their teams home and away jerseys as well as those of the visiting teams," Cox said. It also will prevent teams playing in the same colored jerseys, an occurrence that doesn't sit well with fans. The SL also proposed to change its playoff format. If a team in the Northern or Southern Division wins the first-half and second-half championship, the team with the best record in the division the second half will advance to the playoffs as a wild card starting in 2007. In the past, the wild card was the team with the best overall record for the 140-game regular season. The change was proposed to prevent teams from "tanking" games. Although there hasn't been an obvious example of a team deliberately losing to improve its postseason chances, the possibility likely will be removed. The proposals will be voted on during a league caucus at the annual Winter Meetings in Orlando, Fla., in December and should pass. The National Association of Minor League Baseball also is cracking down on the number of morning games next season. Teams will not be able to play more than four games before noon and no more than one per series. The Eastern League was the reason for the legislation. Several of its teams last season opted to play 9 a.m. games. The Smokies had three DARE Day games last season that began at 11:30 a.m., so school children could attend the game and be dismissed on time. "We do not plan to have more than two or three DARE Days this season," Cox said. Baseball Advanced Media also will take over operation of the SL's Web site. Meanwhile, the Diamond Jaxx's days in Jackson appear numbered. West Tenn and the Seattle Mariners signed a two-year working agreement last month after the Chicago Cubs left Pringles Park in Jackson and signed a two-year affiliation with the Smokies. However, if the team is sold and the sale is approved the Diamond Jaxx could become a lame duck in 2008. Scuttlebutt has the team relocating to Orlando, if the city builds a downtown stadium. Orlando was in the SL and oftentimes led the league in attendance at Tinker Field adjacent to the Citrus Bowl. But attendance faltered when the team moved to Lake Buena Vista near Disney World. The franchise relocated to Montgomery, Ala., in 2004 and became the Biscuits. The Arizona Diamondbacks, who were affiliated with the Smokies for two years (2005-06) after the St. Louis Cardinals left, have signed a two-year player development contract with the Mobile BayBears. ***New updates from David Weiser: www.starsboxscore.com/ New lights are now up on the standards at Joe Davis Stadium. A crew has been working on the placement for the past couple of weeks. They are done and now painting the poles...... Come April, you may see a difference, but according to information from Stars office manager Earl Grilliot, there is no difference in the wattage. But some lights were out during the season, and some were on their way to expiration, so even though there's no difference in the wattage, the field should look brighter. There are now 160 days until Opening Day 2007. Returning players and out-of-town fans will be happy to know or find out that a Cracker Barrel restaurant opened just weeks ago on the corner of Drake and the Parkway, close to the stadium. It is one of the most popular restaurants in the southeastern U.S., offering marvelous "home-cooked" meals and a rustic country atmosphere. 23. Rotoworld: Robert Hinton worked two scoreless innings and struck out three Saturday to earn a relief win for North Shore of the HWL. Hinton, 22, has a 2.51 ERA and a 19/2 K/BB ratio in 14 1/3 innings in Hawaii. He finished with a 3.31 ERA and a 95/26 K/BB ratio in 89 2/3 innings while being used primarily as a reliever for Single-A Brevard County this year. He lacks remarkable stuff, so he doesn't project as anything more than a middle reliever. However, the Brewers can afford to get more aggressive with him.
  24. Rotoworld: Jose Capellan threw four scoreless innings Saturday in his first start in the Dominican Winter League. He allowed three hits, walked none and struck out two. It's unlikely that this is a sign the Brewers will consider using Capellan as a starter next year. He should battle for a role as the primary eighth-inning man in front of Francisco Cordero.
  25. Robert Hinton gets the win (6-5 North Shore) with two scoreless innings Saturday night -- toss out one very bad outing (bad pineapple?), and he's been darn near perfect. Waikiki Top 8th - Pitcher Change: Robert Hinton replaces Takuya Kikou. - Defensive Substitution: Drew Butera replaces catcher Keiyo Aomatsu, batting 6th, playing catcher. - Kenta Nakanishi hit by pitch. - Offensive Substitution: Pinch runner Ian Desmond replaces Kenta Nakanishi. - Sebastien Boucher called out on strikes. - Eric YoungJr. pops out to shortstop Jonathan Tucker. - With Christopher Nelson batting, Ian Desmond caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Drew Butera to second baseman Blake Dewitt. Waikiki Top 9th - Christopher Nelson doubles (4) on a line drive to left fielder Issei Nakamura. - Dexter Fowler strikes out swinging. - Mark Minicozzi grounds out, third baseman Koby Clemens to first baseman Cory Dunlap. - Devin Ivany called out on strikes. Darren Ford scored the winning run when he pinch-ran in the bottom of the 9th. Tough night for Lorenzo Cain -- 0-for-4 (three K's, pop out) and a throwing error from CF.
