Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Back-to-back HRs doom Sounds Memphis shutout foiled by Branyan's solo shot By MAURICE PATTON Tennessean Staff Writer Russell Branyan's rehabilitation assignment continues to be successful ? which was one of the few positives for the Nashville Sounds last night. Branyan's massive second-inning leadoff home run over the right-center-field fence and onto Chestnut Street helped the Sounds avoid a shutout in a 6-1 loss to visiting Memphis. With the solo shot, all five of Branyan's hits since joining the club on June 27 have been for extra bases. The previous four hits were all doubles. "It felt good to get good wood on a ball," said Branyan, who broke his left middle finger on a bunt attempt on June 1. "I'm just trying to get my legs back under me as far as playing nine innings, get my finger feeling good so I can get my swing back." Starting in right field for the third consecutive night, Branyan moved to third base for the final three innings last night. He was not involved defensively, though. "I hadn't been in there for so long ? four weeks," he said. "It was good to get over there. I didn't get any action, but it felt good to get back on some dirt. "It's day-to-day. I'll get here and they'll let me know what I'm going to do. I don't know what the plan is for (today)." Past Branyan, Nashville managed little offensively. Memphis starter Adam Wainwright held the Sounds in check. The big right-hander gave up just five hits in eight innings of work while striking out six. He also snapped a three-game losing streak. "We saw him in Double-A with the Braves," Nashville Manager Frank Kremblas said. "He's got good movement on his fastball, keeps it low and mixes in the changeup and the curve. He did a good job." Across the field, Nashville starter Jeff Housman lasted just three innings, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks ? including a two-out base on balls in each of his innings. After Branyan's homer tied the game at 1-all, Memphis touched up Housman for back-to-back homers in the third by John Nelson and Brandon Berger to take the lead for good. Early exit: Nashville center fielder Dave Krynzel was ejected from last night's game for complaining from the dugout about home plate umpire A.J. Wendel's strike zone. Krynzel, who had just struck out looking with the bases loaded in the fifth, came back out and drew a line about six inches off the plate to mark where he thought the last pitch of his at-bat was. He then brushed against Wendel's right shoulder as he left the field, likely assuring himself a suspension as well as a fine. Jarvis fan club: According to the Sounds front office, about 30 fans are expected at today's game in support of Memphis pitcher Kevin Jarvis. The former Sounds starter lives in Franklin during the offseason. Game at a glance ? Losing pitcher: Housman (3-7). ? Big stick: Branyan, 1-for-4, solo home run. ? How they lost: Memphis snapped a 1-1 deadlock in the third inning with a two-run home run by John Nelson, followed by a Brandon Berger solo homer. Nashville issued nine walks in the loss ? five with two outs ? but struck out 11. ? What they said: "I didn't know what to expect. I've still got a little pain, but I've got to play through it and try to get back into the swing of things." ? Branyan, who is continuing to rehab a broken left middle finger. ? Tonight's pitchers: Sounds ? RHP Rick Helling (5-3, 4.17 ERA). Redbirds ? RHP Kevin Jarvis (6-2, 2.76). Maurice Patton covers the Nashville Sounds for The Tennessean. 7. Brevard County Site Game Summary: FIREWORKS IN THE SKY AND ON THE FIELD FOR THE MANATEES VIERA, FL ? Tim Dillard got his third straight win and the Manatees pounded out ten hits as they sailed to a 4-2 win Saturday night in front of a packed house at Space Coast Stadium. Dillard has won all three of his last starts and has allowed just two earned runs as he improves his record to 5-7 for the Manatees who are now 7-3. He allowed just four hits while whiffing six Daytona batters. The offense also has been on fire in the second half. The ?Tees put up a run in the first and then really got rolling in the second. Lou Palmisano, Jeff Eure and C.J. Medlin led off the second with three straight singles to load the bases. Steve Sollmann hit a sac fly to center to score Palmisano. Robby Deevers would then come up and smack a bases-clearing double to left to get two across and give the Manatees their four runs. Brian Wolfe would come in the ninth and pitch a 1-2-3 inning to pick up his fifth save. The Manatees now go on the road for their longest road trip of the season that spans 12 days and eleven games including three with Daytona and four each with Clearwater and Dunedin before returning home on July 15. Josh Habel takes the mound for the Manatees in Daytona tomorrow night against Alfredo Polanco who was just called up from the Peoria Chiefs.
  8. West Virginia Site Game Summary: Ramirez Blanks the PowerSalisbury, MD ? Luis Ramirez was 1-1 with a 2.60 ERA against the Power this season, and on Saturday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Maryland, he threw a complete game shutout as the Shorebirds went on to beat the Power by the final score of 6-0. The Shorebirds plated the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning on a two-out, two-run single from Paco Figueroa to take a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the third inning Jason Fransz delivered an RBI double and Brian Bock smacked an RBI single to give the Shorebirds a 4-0 lead. Arturo Rivas knocked in Jake Duncan on an RBI triple in the bottom of the eighth inning and Rivas scored later in the eighth when Bock delivered his second RBI single of the game. Ramirez allowed five hits, walked one batter, and struck out eight batters in his complete game shutout. Ramirez (4-4) earned the victory, and Greg Kloosterman (3-11) obtained the loss. The Power fall to 3-6 in the second half with the loss and the Shorebirds improve to 6-3 with the win. The Power will conclude the series against the Delmarva Shorebirds at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Power will throw RHP Forrest Martin (1-4, 4.93) and the Shorebirds will counter with RHP Dennis Robinson (2-7, 5.54). The first pitch is scheduled for 1:35 PM (12:35 Central).

  10. Final: Helena 16, Great Falls (White Sox) 4 Link for Ryan Braun photo while active, text follows: www.greatfallstribune.com...30340/1006 Brewers give Sox dose of reality By LEE VERNOY Great Falls Tribune Sports Writer For an inning and a third Saturday night, it looked like Yunior Novoa was going to have a game that would do wonders for his earned run average. Unfortunately, that fifth out never came for him, as the Northern Division-leading Helena Brewers shelled Novoa for seven earned runs in the second inning en route to a 16-4 rout of the Great Falls White Sox that disappointed 3,105 fans at Centene Stadium. The 6-foot-3, 175-pound southpaw looked strong in the first, giving up only a one-out single to Michael Bell. Bell was thrown out stealing before Angel Salome flied out to end the frame. Novoa started strong in the second, getting Milwaukee's top draft pick, Ryan Braun, to fan on a 1-2 pitch. Then, the wheels came off the wagon. Catcher Brad Willcutt deposited the next pitch over the right field wall and onto the driving range for his first home run of the year, and Novoa didn't retire another Helena batter. The Brewers loaded the bases via singles from Brendan Katin and Ned Yost and a walk to Stephen Chapman. Then Novoa walked Kenny Holmberg to make it 2-0. Charlie Fermaint lined a single to left to score Yost, then Bell walked on a 3-2 pitch to force home Chapman before Great Falls manager John Orton replaced him with righty Luis Pena. Pena struck out Salome for the second out, then Braun ripped a single to left that drove home two and moved Bell to third. Braun took a wide turn around first and got caught in a rundown that got Bell across the plate before Braun was tagged out to end the inning. And Novoa's ERA, which was 10.80 to start the game, ballooned to 16.87, while he suffered his third loss in as many games. Unfortunately, all five White Sox pitchers took a hit to their ERAs as Helena amassed 21 hits and took advantage of seven walks and two Great Falls errors. Every Helena batter got at least one hit. "Hitting is contagious, just like good pitching and good defense," said Helena skipper Ed Sedar. Braun, a 6-2, 200-pound third baseman, finished the game just a double short of the cycle, going 3-for-6 with four RBI. His first professional home run came in the fourth, a two-run job off Pena that was helped by a stiff breeze blowing out to right field. He added a three-bagger in the seventh. "(Braun) had been pressing, and I talked to him before this evening's game and told him to quit pressing," Sedar said. "I don't know if it had anything to do with it, but he showed why (Milwaukee) picked him number one. "His swing is improving almost every time he's out there. He wasn't here for our minicamp after the draft, and he got off to somewhat of a slow start, but things look like they're starting to click for him." And it didn't stop with Braun: Bell drove in three runs with a single and a double. Chapman scored three times and had three hits and a walk. Holmberg had an RBI double to his bases-loaded walk. Meanwhile, Ryan Marion was keeping White Sox bats muffled, if not totally quiet. He gave up a two-run homer to DH Mike Landry in the third and a two-run jack to Francisco Hernandez in the sixth, but not much of anything else as he earned his first win. Wilfredo Laureano worked a scoreless seventh, and Tyler Morrison struck out three in two perfect innings to finish the game off. "Actually, all of our pitchers pitched really well," Sedar added. "(Helena pitching coach) Mark Littell has a plan each day as to what they're doing, and they just go out and stick by their plan." The same two teams will go at it today at 4 p.m. in the second game of the series. Helena will send 6-9 right-hander Eric Thomas (0-1, 4.76) against Sox lefty Eric Everly (0-1, 2.79). 11. Final: West Tenn (Cubs) 11, Huntsville 0 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Jae-Kuk Ryu tossed 7 2/3 scoreless innings and Casey McGehee and Matt Murton each collected four hits to pace a 16-hit attack in West Tenn?s 11-0 decision over Huntsville Saturday night in the third game of a four-game set at Pringles Park. The Diamond Jaxx handed the Stars their worst defeat of the season and improved to 6-5 to move into a first place tie with Huntsville in the North Division, pending the outcome of the doubleheader between Carolina and Jacksonville. Adam Greenberg?s two-run home run in the first inning started the scoring for the home team, which added single tallies in the second and third innings to open up a 4-0 lead. The Diamond Jaxx broke the game open with four in the fourth on a two-run single by McGehee, a run-scoring double by Ryan Theriot and a throwing error by Brad Nelson in left field that allowed Theriot to circle the bases. Stars? starter Ryan Costello was charged with eight runs, seven earned, for a second straight start and suffered the loss to fall to 0-5. The southpaw has allowed 21 runs, 19 earned, on 24 hits over 8 1/3 innings of work in his last three starts. Keith Stamler allowed run-scoring hits by McGehee and Ryan Theriot in the sixth inning and Murton?s solo home run, his seventh of the season and second against the Stars, off of Brett Evert closed out the scoring in the eighth. Ryu allowed five singles and only two runners to reach second base in picking up his seventh win of the season and first in three starts against the Stars. The right-hander walked three and fanned five in his longest outing of the season. Andy Shipman tossed a scoreless inning and a third to finish off the shutout and ended the game by inducing Brandon Gemoll to ground into a double play, the fourth of the night turned by the Jaxx. Vinny Rottino went hitless in four at-bats and lost a five-game hitting streak, while Gemoll also went hitless in four tries and lost a four-game hitting streak and runs batted in string. Nelson singled twice and walked twice and has reached base in 13 out of 14 plate appearances in the series. The series concludes Sunday evening with left-hander Dana Eveland taking the hill for the Stars against Diamond Jaxx left-hander Sean Marshall. 14. Nashville Pre-Game Audio (from Friday) with Nelson Cruz: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...%207-1.mp3 Final: Memphis (Cardinals) 6, Nashville 1 Nashville Site Game Summary: Wainwright, Redbirds Steamroll Sounds, 6-1NASHVILLE ? Memphis right-hander Adam Wainwright turned in the best outing against Nashville all season on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium, leading the Redbirds to a 6-1 victory over the first-place Sounds in the third game of a four-game series. The 23-year-old Wainwright (6-6) allowed only one run on five hits over a season-high eight innings and struck out six Nashville batters in picking up his first victory in five starts. The Memphis win reduced the Sounds? lead in the PCL American Conference Northern Division to 3 ½ games over the Redbirds. Sounds All-Star outfielder Corey Hart extended his hitting streak to 11 games, matching his season high, with his team-leading 26th double during a 1-for-4 evening. Redbirds second baseman Bo Hart put the visitors up 1-0 with a two-out RBI double off Nashville starter Jeff Housman in the top of the second inning. Housman retired the first two batters in the frame then allowed a Mike Mahoney double before issuing a walk to Memphis starting pitcher Wainwright to set the table for Hart. Russell Branyan tied the game in the bottom of the second with a mammoth home run to right-center off Wainwright. The blast, which was Branyan?s first of his rehab assignment with the Sounds, landed on Chestnut Street on the fly. Audio link of Branyan's Titanic Moon Shot: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...%207-2.mp3 Branyan played his first complete game with the Sounds in the fifth contest of his rehab assignment. He played six innings in right field then moved to third base, where he had no fielding chances for the duration of the evening. Memphis regained the lead with home runs on back-to-back pitches from Housman in the top of the third. Shortstop John Nelson belted a two-run shot to left, his 11th of the season, to score Scott Seabol, who had walked. Brandon Berger followed with a first-pitch tater to left, his 13th roundtripper. The Redbirds increased the advantage to 6-1 with two third-inning runs against Sounds reliever Clint Weibl. Seabol ripped an RBI double into the left field corner to bring home Hart and Nelson drove in his third run of the game with a sacrifice fly. Nashville's best scoring chance the rest of the way came in the fifth, when the Sounds loaded the bases against Wainwright with only one out. However, Dave Krynzel struck out looking (prompting his ejection from the contest) and Warren Morris grounded out to end the threat. Housman (3-7) was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs on five hits in three innings of work. He walked four and struck out four. The teams wrap up the series with a 7 p.m. meeting on Monday evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Rick Helling (5-3, 4.17) will take the hill for the Sounds to face Memphis right-hander and Franklin, Tenn. resident Kevin Jarvis (6-2, 2.76). A: Chris Kline: Are we talking about Corey Hart or Corey Hart? Hart the outfielder has been on a tear since early June, and the way the Brewers are giving guys open chances in the big leagues I doubt he'll be in Nashville much longer.

  20. By the way, the Reds extended their agreement to play in Billings by four years through 2010. Theirs is one of the longest current affiliations in baseball, if not the longest, going back to 1974. To our knowledge, all Brewer affiliations will expire after 2006, and we probably won't hear about two- or four-year extensions until next year.

The victory gave Helena two wins in the three-game series and put the Brewers (9-1) two games ahead of the Mustangs (7-3), who leave for a six-game roadtrip that begins today in Missoula. "It's a game of execution,'' Burleson said. "The teams that do that win.'' The Mustangs battled back twice from three-run deficits (3-0, 6-3) and had their chances in the late innings. In the eighth, Mayker Sandoval led off with a single, his third hit of the game and Burleson brought in the speedy Kenny Lewis to pinch run. Chris Denove popped up a bunt attempt, but Lewis still managed to get to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball. He was left stranded when Josh Holden struck out and Brandon Roberts grounded to first. After the Brewers successfully executed a sacrifice bunt and took the lead on a fly ball in the top of the ninth, the Mustangs had another opportunity to tie or win the game in their half. Eric Eymann reached on a throwing error by shortstop Ryan Crew. Eymann got to second on a wild pitch, but Adam Rosales couldn't advance him by failing to put down a bunt. Rosales struck out and Ben Mummy also fanned. Jordan Belcher drew a walk before pinch-hitter James Langham grounded out to end the game. Despite the loss, there were some positives for the Mustangs. Helena came into the game with a league-leading .364 team average and the Mustangs matched the Brewers' 10 hits. Sandoval had three hits and drove in three runs, two with a second-inning homer. Belcher hit two doubles and knocked in a run. Mummy and Denove each had two hits. Brendan Katin and Kenny Holmberg both homered to deep right center for the Brewers. Katin's two-run shot off starter David Wilson gave the Brewers a 3-0 lead in the second. Holmberg led off the fifth with a blast off Robert Wachman. Helena tacked on two more runs, aided by a throwing error by rightfielder Belcher for a 6-3 lead. Wachman, however, did retire the Brewers in order the next two innings and before a Belcher double triggered a three-run sixth for the Mustangs. Sandoval and Denove contributed RBI singles and fly by Roberts brought in the tying run. Helena took the lead in the ninth. Katin drew a walk and Crew put down a bunt that was fielded by Jose Rojas, who didn't make a throw. Holmberg singled to load the bases. Rojas struck out Darren Ford, but Charlie Fermaint's fly to left scored Stephen Chapman, who ran for Katin. Mummy said the Mustangs have to be better at executing things like bunts. "It's just playing baseball,'' Mummy said. "It's not like we're not trying. I think we're coming together as a team. The good teams are the ones that play well together.'' "It's great to play in a close game,'' Burleson said. "It will make us better. We had our chances. We didn't get it done.'' Kevin Roberts, the third of six Helena pitchers got the win and is 1-0. David Welch notched his second save. Jason Vecchio (0-2) was charged with the loss. So the Sounds got in the spirit by turning back Memphis with an old-fashioned rally en route to a 7-5 victory. Nashville, Memphis and the umpires wore retro uniforms dating back to the late 1800s. The Sounds fell behind 5-2 before rallying for two runs in the seventh inning and three more in the eighth in front of a crowd of 6,105. Outfielder Corey Hart provided the winning hit with a two-run double in the eighth, giving the Sounds their fifth win in their last six games. "That was on a sinker," Hart said. "(Vladimir Nunez) threw that pitch before, and it came in a lot. That one kind of flattened out and he left it over the middle for me." The Sounds tied the score 5-5 on a leadoff homer by Mike Rivera in the eighth. Former Gordonsville High star Jeff Bennett recorded his team-high ninth save for the Sounds by retiring three consecutive batters in the ninth. The first-place Sounds increased their lead to 4½ games over Memphis in the Pacific Coast League's American Conference Northern Division. Nashville built a 2-0 lead with an RBI double by Russell Branyan in the first and a one-run single by Nelson Cruz in the fifth. Memphis rallied to take a 4-2 lead in the sixth on a two-run triple by Scott Seabol, an RBI single by Chris Duncan and an RBI double by Cody McKay. Sounds starter Ben Hendrickson, the International League MVP last year, shut out the Redbirds during the first five innings before running into trouble in the sixth when he gave up five hits. The Redbirds increased their lead to 5-2 on a solo homer by Bo Hart in the seventh. Nashville narrowed the deficit to 5-4 on RBI singles by Branyan and Tony Zuniga in the seventh. The Sounds almost tied the score, but Cruz was thrown out by Duncan in a close play at the plate while trying to score from first on Zuniga's single. Memphis starter Chris Gissell ? who needed 37 pitches to get through the inning ? walked the bases loaded in the third before striking out Zuniga to end the threat. Cruz celebrated his 25th birthday by getting on base all four times with two walks, one single and one hit by pitch. He was promoted from Double?A Huntsville on Wednesday. Fantastic Fridays: The Sounds are 66-30 on Fridays since 2001, easily the team's most successful day during that span. Nashville is 10-3 on Friday's this season, including 6-0 at home. Game at a glance ? Winning pitcher: Mike Adams (1-1). ? Big stick: Rivera went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and one RBI. ? How they won: The Sounds rallied from a 5-2 deficit with two runs in the seventh inning and three more in the eighth. Rivera tied the game with a solo homer in the eighth and outfielder Hart followed five batters later with a two-run double. ? What they said: "The two runs in the seventh came with two outs so that was big. Obviously the big, big hit was Rivera tying it up with no outs." ? Nashville Manager Frank Kremblas. ? Tonight's pitchers: Sounds ? LHP Jeff Housman (3-6, 5.38 ERA). Redbirds ? Adam Wainwright (5-6, 3.58). Chip Cirillo is a staff writer for The Tennessean. 23. Fast radar gun in Delmarva? Read on... Link while active, text follows: www.delmarvanow.com/apps/...20312/1006 'Birds catch up, run past Power Delmarva rallies from an early 4-1 deficit By Jason Barbato Daily Times Sports Writer SALISBURY -- It's becoming a pattern. The Delmarva Shorebirds simply play better baseball from behind these days. For the second straight night, the visiting West Virginia Power jumped all over Delmarva, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and stretching it to 4-1 by the bottom of the second. Yet, as was the case in Thursday's series opener with the Power, the Shorebirds pitching settled in, while the offense awakened later in the contest, and Delmarva again bloomed late for an 8-5 victory at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Friday night. The Shorebirds also fell behind 2-0 in the first inning Thursday, only to rally and edge West Virginia 5-4. Friday's victory marked back-to-back triumphs for the club, unbeaten in its first two home contests of the second half of the South Atlantic League season. "We fell behind early, and there were a couple plays early we should have made," Shorebirds manager Gary Kendall said. "But I'll tell you, we've been swinging the bat pretty well, and we have a pretty good ballclub in here now. It's just kind of exciting with this team. We just go out there and try and play great defense and put the ball in play." Delmarva starter Carlos Perez stumbled to a slow beginning to his six-inning effort, as Power shortstop Alcides Escobar took the game's second pitch over the left-field wall to make it 1-0. Perez would yield three more base hits in the first, as West Virginia would add a second run to grab the early two-run advantage. "I came in confident, and I wanted to throw first-pitch strikes," Perez said. "But when the first hitter got to me, I don't know what happened. After that, I had to work on my location a little bit." Designated hitter Jason Fransz knocked in Jake Duncan in the bottom of the inning to close the Shorebird deficit to one run, but Escobar and Hernan Iribarren would plate off Perez in the top of the second on a double by William Lewis to push the Power lead to 4-1. The SAL All-Star hurler would keep his cool, however, and turn back the next nine West Virginia hitters in order. He wouldn't allow another hit after the Lewis double, and scattered six hits, while striking out three on the night to pick up his sixth win of the year. "I didn't throw fastballs in the middle anymore," Perez said. "I started working on my location. I was throwing fastball inside and away, and mixing in my slider. My manager came to the mound and told me that me to keep working hard, because I still had a chance to get a win. It felt pretty good to pull out the win, and I thank my team for playing well behind me." Meanwhile, Delmarva finally solved West Virginia starter Mark Rogers, whose fastball registered at 100 and 101 miles per hour throughout the night, in the bottom of the fifth. Catcher Matt Houston led off the inning with a gap double, and Paco Figueroa reached first one batter later on the first of four Power errors in the game. Next, shortstop Gary Cates caught everyone off guard in his at-bat, lacing a three-run homer over the left-field wall to knot the game at four. "It was a second and third situation, and he went low and off-speed with ball one, so I knew he had to come to me with a pitch down the middle," Cates said. The bomb was his first as a Shorebird in 2005. "It's great to get that first one out of the way, and it couldn't have come at a better time. It just made me feel good to help the team out, and get us back into the ballgame there." The Cates blast knocked Rogers out of the game, and Patrick Scalabrini later singled in Duncan as the Shorebirds batted around in the fifth, and took a 5-4 lead into the sixth. The hot-hitting Duncan then generated Delmarva's final three runs of the game, first doubling and scoring on a wild pitch in the seventh, then tripling to score Figueroa and Cates in the eighth to make it 8-4. He finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored, and Cates, Figueroa and Houston each contributed two hits to pace the Shorebirds attack, which totaled 11 hits in the contest. Relievers Paul Henry and Casey Cahill would shut down West Virginia into the ninth, and Justin Hennington stepped in and allowed one run, but cut the Power off with the bases loaded to end the game, and register his second save of the season. "It's just all positive right now," Kendall said. "The guys believe that they can win, and they are going out there and proving it. Everything is going good right now, and I just want to keep it up."

It's not often you can look at the scoreboard and see a guy hitting .875 for the season. The Stars cruised to a 5-2 victory at Pringles Park on Friday night, and it was Nelson doing most of the heavy hitting for Huntsville, going 3-for-4 with a double, triple and RBI. A bruising 6-foot-2, 220-pound outfielder, Nelson struggled in Triple-A Nashville before recently being demoted to Huntsville. But now that he's down in Double-A, he's hitting .875 (7-for-8) with a home run, triple, two doubles and four RBIs in two games against the Jaxx. After the game, even West Tenn's clubhouse had high praise for the power-hitting left-hander. ''That ball must look like a pumpkin for (Nelson) now,'' Ryan Theriot said shaking his head. ''That guy can hit. I'd be stunned if he's around Double-A much longer.'' In Nelson's final plate appearance of Friday night, it was obvious the Jaxx wanted no part of his bat, walking him on four straight pitches. ''Right now, everything is really slowing down for me when I'm hitting,'' Nelson said. ''It feels great. This entire team is swinging the bat really well.'' The Stars (35-44, 6-4) out-hit the Jaxx, 12-5. Vinny Rottino went 3-for-5 for his second consecutive three-hit night, while Brandon Gemoll was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. With the loss, the Jaxx (49-30, 5-5) dropped to third place in the Southern League's North Division. Huntsville's David Bradley (3-1) worked five innings, giving up a solo home run to Brandon Sing in the fifth inning. But beside that one mistake, the right-hander's deliberate motion kept the Jaxx off-balance most of the night. Stars' relievers Khalid Ballouli and Mitch Stetter, who picked up his seventh save of the season, combined to give up only four hits and one unearned run in four innings. ''We're playing Huntsville at the wrong time right now,'' Jaxx manager Bobby Dickerson said. ''Those guys are hot. Everything they hit is finding a hole, and everything we're hitting goes right at someone. That's just the way it is sometimes.'' Renyel Pinto (4-1) lost his first decision of the season, giving up four earned runs in six innings of work. After cruising through the first three innings, the big left-hander gave up two runs in both the fourth and sixth. Coming into the game, Pinto had been one of the most effective pitchers in the Southern League with a 1.69 ERA. ''Renyel just didn't really have his stuff tonight,'' Dickerson said. ''His velocity was down early and then he started getting behind in a lot of counts. You can't pitch like that and Renyel knows that.'' Thomas Atlee gave up one earned run in two innings of relief and Jon Searles pitched a scoreless ninth, but the Jaxx's offense was never able to get a rally started. Outside of Adam Greenberg's 2-for-4 night, no one mustered more than one hit. ''(Huntsville's) pitchers had good stuff tonight,'' Theriot said. ''Every time we were hitting, it seemed like we were behind in the count. Country singer George Jones was in Pringles Park for the game, but it did little to boost attendance. The crowd of 1,640 was just slightly above the season average of 1,569.
