Nashville Pre-Game Audio Chat with catcher Mike Rivera: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...%206-1.mp3 Nashville Site Game Summary: Sounds Back On Winning Track With 15-7 RoutALBUQUERQUE ? The Nashville Sounds mashed a season-high five home runs en route to a 15-7 rout of the Albuquerque Isotopes on Wednesday evening at Isotopes Park. With the victory, Nashville (28-26) snapped Albuquerque?s six-game winning streak and pulled back into a tie for first place in the PCL American Conference Northern Division with Memphis. The win was the Sounds? fifth in their last six games and improved the club?s record to a perfect 6-0 in Wednesday action this season. Prince Fielder crushed his team-leading 11th roundtripper to pace the Nashville longball brigade. Kevin Orie, Dave Krynzel, Corey Hart, and Brad Nelson also went deep against Isotopes pitching in the victory. Including this evening?s five taters, the Sounds have belted 24 home runs over their last 10 games of action. Nashville scored at least two runs in six of the first seven innings. Every Sounds position player recorded a hit, posted an RBI, and scored a run except shortstop Trent Durrington (0-for-4). Nine of the 14 Sounds hits went for extra bases on the evening, continuing a recent trend for the club. Hart finished 2-for-5 to extend his season-best hitting streak to 10 games, the third double-digit streak by a Nashville player in 2005. Fielder doubled and homered during his 2-for-5 evening to extend his run of consecutive extra-base hits to 12 in a row. Former Sound Jason Wood got into the longball act late in the contest, belting a two-run homer off Jeff Bennett in the bottom of the ninth, his second home run of the series. Nashville starter Rick Helling (4-2) fell short of his fifth consecutive quality start but earned the victory after allowing five runs (three earned) and striking out a season-high eight batters over five innings. With the victory, the veteran pulled into a tie for the team victories lead. Albuquerque starter Jeff Fulchino (4-4) absorbed the loss after getting tagged for nine runs (four earned) on seven hits, including four homers, in just 2 2/3 frames. The team meet again at 8:05 p.m. CT Thursday evening for the third game of the series. Right-hander Justin Lehr (4-4, 6.40) makes the start for Nashville to face Albuquerque right-hander Ben Howard (1-0, 4.88). Final: Mississippi (Braves) 2, Huntsville 1 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Stars Offensive Struggles ContinueMike Porzio worked a solid five innings and the Braves bullpen tossed four scoreless frames in a 2-1 win over Huntsville Wednesday night in the second game of a four-game set at Trustmark Park. Mississippi improved to 26-27 and pulled to within a game of the Southern Division lead, pending the outcome of the second game of a doubleheader between Montgomery and Birmingham. The Stars dropped to 22-31 overall and failed to score more than two runs for the seventh time in eight games against Mississippi. Callix Crabbe opened the game with a double and advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt but was left stranded when Vinny Rottino bounced out to Porzio and Nelson Cruz grounded out to first base. Cruz would blast a two-out home run, his 11th of the season, to straightaway center field in the fourth to put the Stars on top 1-0. Cruz hit his second home run against Braves pitching and moved into a seven-way tie for the league lead. Jeff Francoeur struck out for what appeared to be the second out of the fourth inning but reached first base on a wild pitch. Scott Thorman then fanned before Huntsville starter Manny Parra hit Brian McCann and walked Wes Timmons to load the bases with two outs. Jon Schuerholz, 3-for-30 against Stars pitching, singled into center field on the first pitch he saw from Parra to drive in Francoeur and McCann to give the home team a 2-1 edge. Parra worked out of trouble in the seventh by striking out pinch-hitter Carlos Duran and Gregor Blanco with runners at second and third and one out. The Stars southpaw matched a season-high with 10 strikeouts and went seven innings for a third time in four starts. Parra walked one and has issued exactly one free pass in 10 of his 11 starts. Porzio, entering the game with an 8.10 earned run average in 10 innings, allowed the Stars lone run on four hits and fanned four to earn his first win since joining the Braves. He had worked in five games in relief and made one other start prior to Wednesday. Ryan Basner retired all six hitters he faced and Blaine Boyer worked a perfect eighth to turn the game over to Jorge Vasguez, who had worked three scoreless frames against the Stars. Crabbe worked a leadoff walk on four pitches, advanced to second on a Kennard Bibbs sacrifice, reached third on a wild pitch with Nelson Cruz at the plate and two outs and was left stranded when Cruz bounced back to the mound on a check swing for the final out of the game. Vasquez earned his sixth save of the season and preserved the Braves fifth straight win, their longest winning streak of the season. The series continues Thursday night with right-hander Glenn Woolard making the start for the Stars against Braves right-hander Matt Wright, the reigning Southern League Pitcher of the Week. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. Link while active, text follows: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...;fext=.jsp Little Unit to start on five years' rest By Jason Ratliff / MLB.com With nearly five years elapsed since his last official Minor League start, having to wait one more day due to a rainout must seem like nothing to Ryan Anderson. The former Seattle Mariners top prospect will make his first official start since September 4, 2000, when he takes the mound for the Brevard County Manatees in the opener of Thursday night's double header against the Daytona Cubs in Viera, Fla. His scheduled start on Wednesday was postponed due to heavy rain. Anderson was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the first round of the 1997 draft after throwing three no-hitters and striking out 133 of the 154 batters he faced as a senior at Divine Child High School in Dearborn, Mich. The 6-foot-10 left-hander was seen as a near carbon copy of Randy Johnson, who was then the Mariners' ace. Anderson lived up to his "Little Unit" moniker in his first three Minor League seasons, striking out an average of nearly 12 batters per game, before having his career halted by a series of major shoulder surgeries. The overpowering southpaw had been pegged for a late-season call-up from Triple-A Tacoma in 2000, but four days after his 21st birthday, he felt discomfort in his shoulder after striking out a season-high 13 batters against Calgary. After a month on the disabled list, Anderson made a start against Salt Lake City on September 4, but was pulled after two innings, never to return, until now. The Mariners finally released their prized prospect this April after he missed the 2001-2004 seasons. Anderson was pitching for the Surprise Fightin' Falcons of the independent Golden Baseball League when the Milwaukee Brewers signed him to a Minor League contract in May and assigned him to Brevard County in the Florida State League. Anderson, now 25, made his first appearance for the Manatees in a "piggyback" role on May 26 against Lakeland, striking out two in a scoreless first inning before giving way to starter Ryan Costello. Ryan Anderson is trying to overcome shoulder problems that sidelined him for four straight seasons. (Otto Greule Jr./Getty Images) http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/images/2005/06/01/IJ6Gv52k.jpg

Link while active, text follows: www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=1600 Helling To Start Tonight, No Worse For Wearby Maurice Patton, Tennessean Five days after making national headlines for his part in a freakish baseball incident, Rick Helling is set to return to the mound tonight when the Nashville Sounds continue their four-game series at Albuquerque. The 34-year-old right-hander had to leave during the seventh inning of a 13-3 win over New Orleans on Friday when a 10-inch shard of wood from the shattered bat of Craig Kuzmic stuck about three inches deep in his left forearm. "You say all the time, 'If you play this game long enough, you see everything,' but that's something I'd never seen or heard of, and no one that I've talked to has ever heard of it," said Helling, who only required seven stitches to close the wound. "I don't think it'll have any effect on me. I may not be able to swing. I haven't tried that. But pitching, I don't think it'll bother me." Pitching coach Stan Kyles said Helling, who improved to 3-2 with Friday's win, has looked fine in his preparation since the occurrence. "Obviously you have a little concern simply because it's his first time out since it happened," Kyles said. "But it's very minimal with him. He's had a good week of work. He threw his side session and he caught balls back at him. "You never know till you know, but he's had a great week, and we fully expect him to go out and do the things he's done and pitch a decent game." With broken bats becoming more common, getting hit by a part of one comes with the territory, Helling said. "Getting hit isn't the strange part," said the 6-foot-3, 241-pounder. "The strange part was it sticking in my arm. "If another one's coming at me, I'll do the same as the last time and try to get out of the way. If not, hopefully it'll hit me on the meaty part of my body and not stick in." Helling, who had his right leg broken by a line drive late in spring training last year, has had his fill of being endangered by flying objects while he's on the mound. "That's two strange occurrences in 16 months," he said. "Hopefully I'm done with that." -

Nashville Site Game Summary: ALBUQUERQUE ? A pair of former Sounds helped to end Nashville?s season-best four-game winning streak on Tuesday evening as the Albuquerque Isotopes extended their own win streak to six games with a 6-3 victory at Isotopes Park. Third baseman Jason Wood (Sound in 2000-01) homered and drove in four runs and starting pitcher Ariel Prieto (Sound in 2003) threw 5 2/3 solid innings to earn the victory for the Isotopes. In addition to his offensive performance, Wood took away two runs from the Sounds with a pair of outstanding defensive plays from his post at the hot corner. With the loss, Nashville (27-26) drops back to second place in the PCL American Conference Northern Division, one game behind Memphis. Albuquerque (31-22) picked up its league-leading 31st victory. The Sounds struck first, taking a 1-0 lead on a pair of back-to-back two-out doubles by Prince Fielder and Corey Hart in the top of the first inning. The RBI two-bagger for Hart (2-for-4) extended the outfielder?s season-best hitting streak to nine games. Fielder?s double was the prospect?s tenth consecutive extra-base hit. Wood knotted the contest with a two-out hit of his own in the bottom of the frame, plating Wilson Delgado with an RBI single off Nashville starter Jeff Housman. Wood delivered again against his old club in the bottom of the third when he belted a two-out, three-run homer off Housman, his eighth roundtripper of the year, to give Albuquerque a 4-1 lead. Ryan Knox pulled the Sounds within a run with a two-out, two-run double to the left-center gap in the top of the fourth. Hart and Julio Mosquera scored on the knock. Audio Link, Ryan Knox's two-run double: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...205-31.mp3 Albuquerque added a pair of insurance runs later in the contest. Isotopes left fielder Mike Colangelo upped the Albuquerque advantage to 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double. Matt Padgett, the Isotopes? top hitter, plated the game?s final run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth to run the score to its final 6-3. Rickie Weeks had his seven-game hitting streak snapped with an 0-for-3 effort for Nashville. Prieto (3-2) earned the win after allowing three runs and striking out six over his 5 2/3 innings of work. Housman (2-4) took a loss for his third consecutive start after surrendering five runs on six hits in five frames. J.B. (formerly Bart) Miadich worked a scoreless ninth for Albuquerque to pick up his team-leading ninth save. Right-hander Mike Adams made an impressive debut for the Sounds, retiring all six batters he faced, including three strikeouts, over two scoreless innings of work. The teams meet again in the second game of the series at 8:05 p.m. Wednesday evening. Right-hander Rick Helling (3-2, 4.43) makes the start for Nashville on schedule, four days removed from having his left arm impaled by a piece of New Orleans catcher Craig Kuzmic?s bat on Friday at Greer Stadium. Albuquerque will counter with right-hander Jeff Fulchino (4-3, 5.26). Nashville Box Score: Has Jeff Housman maxed out his abilities at this point? Final: Mississippi (Braves) 10, Huntsville 1 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Joseph, Lerew Lead Braves to Big WinOnil Joseph singled three times and knocked in four runs as Mississippi pounded out a season-high 15 hits en route a 10-1 win over Huntsville in the first of a four-game series at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Mississippi. The Braves improved to 25-27 and moved to within two games of South Division leaders Birmingham, which was rained out at home against Montgomery. The Stars dropped their fourth consecutive game to the Braves and fell to 22-30 overall and 10-18 on the road in their most lopsided loss of the season. The Braves reached Stars starter Dennis Sarfate for three runs in the second inning, all with two outs. Mississippi starter Anthony Lerew singled back through the middle to drive in Brian McCann from third and push Wes Timmons to third base to start the scoring. Gregor Blanco walked to load the bases before Joseph legged out an infield hit on a chopping ground ball to shortstop Enrique Cruz, who sailed his throw to first past first sacker Brandon Gemoll to allow Lerew to score to make it 3-0. The Braves tacked on two more in the third on when McCann doubled with one out and scored when Timmons followed with a two-base hit. Luis Hernandez then singled home Timmons with two outs. Sarfate was taken out after four innings, his shortest outing of the year, during which he allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits. The right-hander struck out three and issued four walks for a second straight start. The Stars lone run came on an opposite-field home run to left by Gemoll, his second of the season. Lerew limited the visitors to one run on three hits over six innings and has now allowed just one run on six hits with 14 strikeouts over 13 innings in two starts, which have produced two of his four victories on the season. The home team put the game away with four runs in the sixth against Khalid Ballouli, making his second appearance in relief. Joseph singled home a pair, Scott Thorman drove in a run with a single to extend his hitting streak to 15 games and Timmons doubled home his second run of the night and finished with three hits, two runs scored and two RBI. Joseph knocked in four runs in a game for the second time this year and tallied three hits for a first time, while Hernandez chipped with three hits and two runs scored. The series continues Wednesday night with southpaw Manny Parra getting the start for the Stars against Braves left-hander Matt Coenen. Link while active, text follows: www.tennessean.com/apps/p...1/SPORTS04 Sounds complete sweep of Zephyrs in wild series Hendrickson (2-4) earns his first win as a starter By MAURICE PATTON Tennessean Staff Writer With 15 home runs, five ejections ? and don't forget the bat shard in the pitcher's arm ? the Nashville Sounds' four-game series with visiting New Orleans would qualify as nothing less than wild. "There was a lot of testosterone flying around," Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said. But if it was wild, it was wildly successful as well. A 3-2 victory yesterday gave Nashville its longest winning streak of the season (four games), its first four-game series sweep in nearly two years and a share of first place in the Pacific Coast League's American Northern Division for the first time in almost a month. It was the only game of the series in which Nashville did not hit a homer. The Sounds hit 12 in the previous three contests while outscoring the Zephyrs 32-14. "It's nice to be able to win without a home run, especially a one-run game," Kremblas said after the Sounds improved to 9-4 in such contests. While most pitchers would have been envious of the offensive backing the Sounds had produced earlier in the series, Ben Hendrickson was fine with the three runs he got yesterday. "For me, it's easier to pitch when it's a close game," Hendrickson said after getting his first win in a starting role and improving to 2-4 on the year. "When you're winning by a big margin, you relax and all of a sudden they put a 'five-spot' up on you. I'd rather be in a one-run game when you have to keep working and competing." Nashville scored in each of its first two at-bats with Corey Hart and Dave Krynzel picking up RBI base hits, then snapped a 2-2 tie when Krynzel tripled and scored on Rickie Weeks' single in the fifth. Kremblas was more impressed with the team's defense, though, following the game. "We're coming around, hopefully," he said after the Sounds turned double plays in the first, second, fourth and ninth innings. "We've been poor, overall, in my opinion ? not so much from an error standpoint, but getting bad jumps on balls in the outfield, not anticipating things that might happen. But we've talked about all that, and the guys are getting a little better, in my opinion." Finally: Prince Fielder became the first Sounds player to receive Pacific Coast League weekly honors this season, earning the Hitter of the Week award yesterday. In seven games between May 23-29, Fielder hit .360 (9-for-25) with seven home runs, 16 RBIs and a 1.280 slugging percentage. He homered twice on both Monday and Sunday and hit a grand slam in a six-RBI effort Saturday. New arrival: Reliever Mike Adams is expected to join the Sounds for the series in Albuquerque that begins today. In 13 appearances out of the Brewers' bullpen, Adams was 0-1 with a 2.70 ERA. However, he was one of three Milwaukee pitchers that still had options ? allowing them to be sent to the minors without being placed on waivers, thus being exposed to other major league teams ? making him the odd man out when starter Ben Sheets came off the disabled list Friday. Join the band: Sounds infielder Trent Durrington became the fourth Sounds player to earn a Copley guitar after homering off the guitar-shaped scoreboard beyond the left-field fence during Sunday's win. Presented with the instrument prior to yesterday's game, Durrington joins fellow infielders Steve Scarborough, Weeks and Kevin Orie. Game at a glance ? Winning pitcher: Ben Hendrickson (2-4). ?Big stick: Dave Krynzel, 3-for-4, triple, RBI, run. ?How they won: Krynzel's one-out triple in the fifth led to the game-winning run. Rickie Weeks followed with an RBI base hit to snap a 2-2 tie. Defensively, the Sounds turned four double plays to support Hendrickson and reliever Chad Paronto. ?What they said: "I thought if I threw a decent fastball they'd beat it into the ground and get a double play." ? Hendrickson after the Sounds turned three double plays in his six innings. ?Today's pitchers: Sounds ? LHP Jeff Housman (2-3, 5.21 ERA). Isotopes ? RHP Ariel Prieto (2-2, 6.00). Link while active, text follows: www.nashvillecitypaper.co...s_id=41817 Defense lifts Sounds to victory By Mark McGee, Nashville City Paper Sports Correspondent The Nashville Sounds were billed from the start as one of the most powerful offensive teams in the Pacific Coast League, but a team cannot live by hitting alone. Monday afternoon, the Sounds entertained a Memorial Day crowd of 5,313 with a 3-2 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs at Greer Stadium. The win gave the Sounds their first four-game series sweep of the season, and their first as a franchise since the 2003 season when they took three games from Oklahoma July 4-6. The last four-game sweep for the Sounds at Greer Stadium was against Colorado Springs June 21-24, 2003. It was also the first time this season the Zephyrs had been swept. Nashville manager Frank Kremblas pointed to defensive problems as the reason the Sounds took so long to sweep a team this season. ?Our defense has been poor overall, not just in making errors, but from the standpoint of making bad jumps on balls and not anticipating things that might happen in certain situations.? The Sounds turned a season-high four double plays against the Zephyrs. The Sounds did not make an error, the second time in the series they played errorless defense. Kremblas saw defensive improvement in the previous series at Portland. ?The defense has been coming around,? Kremblas said. ?We had two games in Portland without an error. We have been working on the field, and we have been talking about it. When a batter has two strikes they need to be thinking about what he might want to try to do. You have to keep talking to them, and telling them what to do until they tell you they have got it.? Ben Hendrickson started for the Sounds. He picked up his second win in six decisions this season. In six innings he gave up six hits, two runs, five walks and struck out three. Clint Weibl pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Chad Paronto shut down the Zephyrs on one hit in the final two innings to earn the save. ?Ben had 10 ground-ball outs,? Kremblas said. ?Having the team get three of the double plays for him helped. He wasn?t as consistent as he had been in his last four outings, but he only gave up two runs.? The series also featured five ejections, three on Monday. New Orleans Manager Tim Foli and Doug Sisson, roving minor league instructor, were tossed in the first inning after two batters for questioning a call over whether a ball was fair or foul. In the eighth inning New Orleans right fielder Melvin Nieves was thrown out for questioning a third strike call. Nashville?s Prince Fielder was named PCL Batter of the Week for May 23-29. Eveland shines as he holds Smokies to 1 hit in 7 innings in Stars' win By MARK McCARTER Times Sports Staff markcolumn@aol.com Halfway home, it was too early to give it much consideration. But that 0 glowing up there on the scoreboard where the Tennessee Smokies' hit total lived started looking bigger and more impressive with each passing moment. The least-impressed person was the man behind it all, Huntsville Stars' lefthander Dana Eveland. A no-hitter? Don't even waste a thought on it. "I've never even been close before,'' Eveland said. "I probably wouldn't even think about it until the seventh inning.'' The no-hitter didn't live that long. Tennessee's Mike DiRosa spoiled it with one out in the fifth. It was the only hit Eveland would allow in seven innings, pitching the Stars to an 8-2 win over the Smokies Monday afternoon that snapped Huntsville's eight-game home losing streak. "I throw a lot of pitches,'' Eveland said. "I'm effectively wild, I guess you'd say. I don't have a chance to go that deep in a game where I'd have a shot at (a no-hitter).'' "You never know,'' said Stars pitching coach Rich Sauveur, who three times in his career carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning but never had one in the pros. "He's got the stuff to do it. "He knows how to pitch. He's got four pitches and he has pretty good command of them all and he uses them,'' Sauveur said. "His attitude to me is what really shines out to me. I love his attitude. If he gives up a home run, he doesn't let it bother him. He shakes it off and goes back to work.'' Eveland pitched in four games with the Stars in August, including a breathtaking debut in which he threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings in a game Huntsville ultimately kicked away in extra innings. "Last year, I was still in awe,'' said Eveland. "I was here for three weeks, and I was in awe the whole time. It was like I didn't belong yet. I was so nervous about it. But I had a long off-season and I had a lot of time to think about it and I told myself I belonged here. I'm more confident. I'm not afraid to go after hitters now. Last year, I was nervous, trying to hit corners.'' On the opposite end of the pitching spectrum, lefthander Matt Ford was released Monday. A member of the Milwaukee major league staff in 2003, Ford was 3-9 with a 4.22 ERA in his two seasons in Huntsville. He was the losing pitcher in relief Friday and Sunday. "He wasn't making any progress,'' said Reid Nichols, the Brewers' director of player development. "We didn't see him pitching for us in the major leagues.'' The Stars embark on a four-game road trip to Mississippi, then return to Huntsville Saturday to host the Braves.
