  1. There appears to be a delay in our Standings source this morning -- we'll check again by the time this evening's action rolls around. Normally we've been including League Leader information on Saturday's in cut-and-paste format, but today we'll simply link you to USA Today's Minor League Index page. 2. It surprises me that no one has mentioned yet either here or in the Nashville thread that Dave Krynzel was the first of the Sounds to get the call to Milwaukee. Hi 403137. Yeah, sometimes we've glossed over moves here that are to the big league club, always discussed on the Major League Forum. Perhaps where Dave has been in Milwaukee before, as well, and this appears to be a temporary assignment, but yes, good catch. Thanks.

  5. Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Sounds adjust outfield after Krynzel's call-up By MAURICE PATTON Staff Writer Following the Thursday promotion of Dave Krynzel to the Milwaukee Brewers, the Nashville Sounds have an opening for a center fielder. The Huntsville Stars, the Double-A affiliate of the Brewers, have a center fielder who's playing particularly well these days. But in the minor leagues, one plus one doesn't always equal two. Although Tony Gwynn Jr. has shaken off a slow start and elevated his batting average to .291, there are no plans to bring him to Nashville. "We're not really looking at (Huntsville)," Brewers Director of Player Development Reid Nichols said. "Tony Gwynn (son of the future Hall of Famer) needs more time; we don't think he's ready. Someone to go in there would be a backup player ... We're going to hold off just a little bit. They seem to be OK for now. We don't want to rush into anything." Krynzel took the roster spot vacated when third baseman Russell Branyan went on the disabled list with a broken left middle finger. Ryan Knox got the start for the Sounds, who are one short of the 24-player limit, in Thursday's 8-3 win at Albuquerque. The bench will be a bit thin for the upcoming series against Omaha, though, because the visitors are an American League affiliate (Royals) and the series will see both teams utilizing the designated hitter. "I think it's more important to have the extra position player when you're hitting with the pitcher," Nashville Manager Frank Kremblas said. "It gives you that extra flexibility." "We talked to Frank and we didn't feel there was an immediate need," Nichols said. "We didn't want to go sign someone just to have 24 players. We're just going to wait and see." With Krynzel gone, the Sounds are down to just three outfielders ? Knox, Corey Hart and Brad Nelson. However, Kremblas still has some flexibility with regards to the situation there. "(Trent) Durrington and (Chris) Barnwell have both played out there," he said, referring to two of the team's infielders. "I'm sure (Steve) Scarborough could go out there and run around if need be." Maurice Patton covers the Nashville Sounds for The Tennessean. He can be reached at mopatton@tennessean.com.
  6. I'm sure many of you have read the EZ Board postings and announcements about the hacking attack on their forums and their lack of recovery at this time. Our Minor League Form, normally twenty pages of threads, pretty meticulously maintained and obviously most not yet archived, is but a shell, with barely a page worth of miscellaneous threads. Here's to their recovery efforts.

Sounds starting pitcher Justin Lehr did it all on Thursday evening at Isotopes Park, hurting Albuquerque from the mound and from the batter?s box in Nashville?s 8-3 victory over the Isotopes in the third game of a four-game series. The 27-year-old right-hander earned his first victory as a starter since the 2001 season after allowing one run on five hits in six innings of work and belted the first home run of his seven-year professional career to highlight a 3-for-3, five-RBI night at the plate. The former collegiate catcher played in the Oakland Athletics? farm system for his first six seasons and never batted before joining the Brewers organization last off-season. Audio Link for Justin Lehr's Home Run: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...%206-2.mp3 Outfielder Corey Hart also did his part for the Sounds, increasing his career-best hitting streak to 11 games with a 5-for-5 evening that included four singles and his fourth triple of the campaign. The five hits for the 23-year-old prospect are a career high and mark the first five-hit effort by a Sounds player in over a year, dating back to Tony Alvarez?s five knocks on September 1, 2003 at Isotopes Park. Somewhat lost in the shuffle was Nashville second baseman Rickie Weeks belting his 11th home run of the season to highlight a 2-for-5 evening for the 22-year-old. With the victory, Nashville (29-26) pulled into sole possession of first place in the PCL American Conference Northern Division for the first time since May 4. Lehr spotted the Sounds a 2-0 lead in the top of the second with a two-out, two-run single to right off Isotopes starter Ben Howard. PCL slugging leader Josh Willingham improved his numbers in the bottom of the frame when he put Albuquerque on the board with a leadoff homer to center off Lehr, making it a 2-1 game. Nashville added a pair of runs in the fourth to up the advantage to 4-1. Hart led off with a triple and scored on Ryan Knox?s one-out sacrifice fly. Lehr followed with his first career longball, a two-out shot to right off Howard. Weeks led off the fifth with his 11th home run of the season, tying the second baseman with Prince Fielder for the Nashville team lead. Lehr struck again for the Sounds in the sixth with his second two-run single of the night, this one off Isotopes reliever Mike Flannery. Hart and Julio Mosquera scored on the knock, which gave the right-hander five RBIs on the evening. Weeks contributed his second run batted in of the night later in the frame, when his singled home Knox to increase the Nashville lead to 8-1. The Isotopes tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth against Sounds reliever Andy Pratt to complete the evening?s scoring. Chris Aguila plated the first run of the an RBI double before ex-Sound Jason Wood delivered a sacrifice fly. Lehr (5-4) earned his team-leading fifth victory and his first win as a starting pitcher since July 28, 2001, when he was pitching for Double-A Midland in the A?s chain. Howard (1-1) was tagged with his first loss of the year after surrendering five runs (four earned) in his five frames. Chad Paronto tossed a scoreless ninth for Nashville to run his current scoreless streak to 12 1/3 innings over eight appearances out of the Sounds bullpen. The teams wrap up the series with an 8:05 p.m. CT finale on Friday evening. Nashville right-hander Jose Capellan (3-2, 4.74) takes the hill to face Albuquerque southpaw Les Walrond (3-2, 3.94). 13. Final: Mississippi (Braves) 5, Huntsville 3 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Braves Big Inning Beats StarsScott Thorman?s two-out, two-run single capped a decisive four-run second inning in Mississippi?s 5-3 win over Huntsville Thursday night in the third game of a four-game series at Trustmark Park in Pearl. The Braves won their sixth straight game to even their record at 27-27 and pull to within a half game of the lead in the South Division after division leader Montgomery and second place Birmingham were rained out for a second time in three nights. The Stars have lost six of their last seven games to drop to 22-32 overall and 10-20 on the road. Mississippi has won each of the last six games against the Stars and outscored Huntsville 33-9 in doing so. Tony Gwynn, Jr. singled with one out in the first inning and scored on a double by Nelson Cruz to give the Stars the early 1-0 lead one night after they failed to score in the first inning by stranding Callix Crabbe at third base with one out. Cruz extended his hitting streak to a season-best six games and has knocked in a run in six of his last seven games. The Braves tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a Jeff Francoeur sacrifice fly. Crabbe opened the second with a base hit, stole second base, his first since May 16, and scored on a two-out single by starting pitcher Glenn Woolard, who picked up his first hit and first run batted in of the season. Wes Timmons opened the home second inning with a single and scored when Jon Schuerholz followed with a double to knock in his third run of the series and 11th of the season. Juan Velasquez advanced Schuerholz to third base with a fly ball out before Woolard walked Braves pitcher Matt Wright and Gregor Blanco to load the bases. Onil Joseph then singled to right field to chase home Schuerholz to put the home team ahead 3-2. Francoeur struck out for the second out but Thorman followed with a line drive single to center field on an 0-1 pitch to plate Wright and Blanco to make it 5-2 and extend his hitting streak to 17 games. Seven of the last 11 batters walked by Woolard have scored after only one of the first 19 he put on with a free pass crossed the plate. The Stars loaded the bases against Wright in the fourth on walks to Crabbe and John Vanden Berg and a bunt base hit by Guilder Rodriguez, who was giving Enrique Cruz his first night off of the season at shortstop. Jeff Winchester, pinch-hitting for Woolard, was called out on strikes on three pitches, Kennard Bibbs delivered Crabbe with a sacrifice fly and Gwynn struck out for the final out of the frame. Crabbe scored twice in a game for only the second time this season. The Stars chased Wright in the sixth after a sacrifice bunt by pitcher Alec Zumwalt moved Vanden Berg to third and Rodriguez to second base with two outs. The Braves called on southpaw Steve Kent to face the lefty-hitting Kennard Bibbs, who lined out to Thorman at first base for the final out of the inning. Kent worked a perfect seventh, Glen Tucker a perfect eighth before Jorge Vasquez took over in the ninth. Vinny Rottino was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to second base on an infield hit by Bibbs, who ended a 16 at-bat hitless streak, before Vasquez fanned Gwynn and Nelson Cruz to end the game and earn his second save in as many nights and seventh of the season. The series concludes Friday night with left-hander Ryan Costello making the start for the Stars against Braves left-hander Matt Coenen, who will come off the disabled list to take the hill. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. 14. From Florida Today: Four players will represent the Brevard County Manatees at the Florida State League All-Star game in Clearwater later this month. Starting pitchers Ty Taubenheim and Carlos Villanueva have been selected to the East squad as have Manatees outfielder Steve Moss and catcher Lou Palmisano. Taubenheim and Villanueva have been as dominant as any duo in the FSL. Going into Thursday, Taubenheim sported a 7-1 record with a 2.13 ERA. Opponents were hitting under .200 (.195) against Taubenheim. They were faring worse against Villanueva. Opponents managed just a .160 batting average against Villanueva, who had won five games without a loss while posting a 2.00 ERA. After Wednesday, Moss led the Manatees with four triples while also hitting .277 with six homers and 22 RBI. Palmisano, meanwhile was hitting .247 with two home runs and 18 RBI. The East and West teams will meet June 18 in Clearwater.

Final, Game One: Brevard County 2, Daytona (Cubs) 1, ten innings, scheduled for seven innings Final, Game Two: Brevard County 7, Daytona (Cubs) 6 No doubleheader summary from the home team Manatees yet (if at all), but fortunately the Cubs' site is outstanding... Brevard County Doubleheader Summary from the Cubs' Site: CUBS FIND DOUBLE-TROUBLE IN BREVARD COUNTY Daytona Lost Both Ends of The Double-Header To The Last Place Manatees In Heart-Breaking Fashion and Have Now Fallen To an Even 25-25 On The Season by: Bo Fulginiti VIERA, Fla?It may be a bit premature for the fat lady to be singing the Daytona Cubs a farewell tune in the FSL East, but on Thursday night in Viera she was humming a few warm-up notes awfully loud. On a night with a scheduled double-header against the last place Brevard County Manatees at Space Coast Stadium, the Cubs were in desperate need of a few wins and a little momentum heading into the final stretch drive of the first half. But apparently the Manatees were more interested in playing the role of ?spoiler? instead, as Brevard County rallied in both games with some late-inning fireworks to win Game 1 in 10 innings by a final of 2-1 and Game 2 by a score of 7-6. Cubs righty Carlos Marmol got the nod in Game 1 and went six strong innings as he gave up just one earned run on six hits but was slapped with the no-decision as Brevard County saved their best for the extra frames. The scheduled seven inning game eventually crept into the 10th inning with both sides clinging to a 1-1 tie, until Manatees centerfielder Steve Moss hit a sacrifice fly off Cubs reliever Weston O?Brien (2-2) to right-centerfield with the bases loaded and one out to score right fielder Travis Ezi with the game-winning run to seal the deal. Manatees lefty Ryan Anderson made the start, and the southpaw pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless ball before yielding to the Brevard County ?pen in the second inning. Manatees reliever Jeremy Lewis (1-3) came in to pitch the 10th for Brevard, and was credited with a scoreless frame and his first win of the season. In Game 2 the Cubs looked for redemption and got off to the hot start with three first inning runs off Manatees starter Ty Taubenheim (8-1), as Daytona banged out three runs on five hits capped off by a two-RBI single from left fielder Kevin Collins. But once again Brevard County got their licks in at the plate, as Manatees catcher C.J. Medlin went 3-for-3 with a three-run home run, two singles and two runs scored to lead the charge for Brevard who would score seven runs, including three in the sixth to hang on and win. Anderson Tavarez (1-6) got the start in the second game and was charged with the loss, and Taubenheim won his league-leading eighth game of the season for the Manatees. Two bright spots offensively for Daytona in the double-header were third baseman Scott Moore and right fielder J.J. Johnson. Moore went 3-for-8 with a pair of homers to increase his team-leading homerun total to 12. Johnson went a scorching 6-for-7 including a double, four singles, a homerun and two runs scored in the two contests to raise his average to .291. With the two losses Daytona has now dropped to 25-25 and is back at the .500 mark for the first time since April 26 when the Cubs were 9-9. The Manatees improved to 21-32 with the two victories and stated their case for a promising second half of the season for the fans of Brevard County. The two teams will once again go head-to-head for a double-dip on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, as lefty J.R. Mathes (3-2, 3.46) will face Manatees lefty Josh Habel (0-3, 2.95) in Game 1, and southpaw Sean Marshall (4-2, 1.73) will take the mound in Game 2 against Brevard County righty Bo Hall (0-0, 3.94). Both games will be seven inning contests with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. EST (5:05 Central). Brevard County Game One Box Score: Great job by the bullpen, gotta feel good for a previously struggling Kenny Durost; lots of baserunning activity for both sides in a 2-1 game -- big night for Brewer farmhands getting picked off base -- Lou Palmisano throws out two, both in a critical 8th inning... 16. www.starsboxscore.com/ What a difference a pitch makesSomehow, Jon Schuerholz, 3-for-30 against Stars pitching, was the one batter Manny Parra had to beat tonight...... The hard-luck pitcher he has been lately, of course Schuerholz becomes the one to single-handedly beat the Stars, 2-1, and go a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate........ Manny, in his last four starts, has gone seven innings three times, striking out 10 now twice, yet in those three starts, the Stars have only scored three runs for him. So he winds up with just one win in his last four starts, despite a 1.71 ERA........ Manny walked one and has now issued just one walk in nine of his 10 starts. In his other start, he walked two. Nelson Cruz blasted his 11th home run of the year to straightaway center with two out in the top of the 4th to give the Stars a 1-0 lead. The home run put Nelson in a seven-way tie for the league lead...... Manny struck out Onil Joseph and Jeff Francoeur to start off the bottom of the inning, but Manny's wild pitch on the final strike put Francoeur on........ That would turn out to be a fatal mistake........ Affer Francoeur stole second, Manny struck out Scott Thorman, the Braves' leading hitter, and 12th in the league with a .312 average, with what should have been the third out......... Instead, Parra loaded the bases by hitting Brian McCann with a pitch and walking Wes Timmons...... That set up Schuerholz to single up the middle on the first pitch he saw to drive in Francoeur and McCann....... Luis Hernandez would hit into a force play to end the inning, as a foursome led by former Carolina Mudcat and Birmingham Baron Mike Porzio would blank the Stars on one hit the rest of the way....... Porzio entered the game with an 8.10 ERA, yet scattered four hits in his five innings of work and walked just one. The Stars have now lost 21 of their last 30 games and 12 of their last 15..... They've allowed four runs or less in half of those losses and lost by a run in five of them...... They are now 5-13 in one-run games this season, after going 0-6 in May. They are hitting .235 in their last 15 games....... The Stars have lost six of eight meetings with the Braves this season. In only one of them, have they scored more than a pair of runs, and are hitting just .188 in the season series. They've scored just one run in four of the last five games against them and scored only two runs in that game. The Stars had a chance to score in the 1st inning, leaving Callix Crabbe, playing after a couple of days off, on third with one out after he opened the game with a double to left, but Vinny Rottino and Nelson Cruz both grounded out....... In the 9th, with reliever Jorge Vasquez on the mound, Crabbe walked on four pitches and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kennard Bibbs. He was able to reach third on a wild pitch, but again was stranded when Nelson Cruz grounded out to end the game. Matt Wright, the reigning Southern League Pitcher-of-the-Week will face off against Glenn Woolard, Thursday night. Woolard lost to Wright, 5-0, last April 26 at Trustmark Park.
  17. Catching up on a few posts from Wednesday's games -- kind words about Josh Wahpepah from Delmarva players and staff here: Link while active, text follows: www.delmarvanow.com/apps/...20322/1006 By Jonathan Howard Special To The Salisbury Daily Times SALISBURY -- Summer is rapidly approaching, and Delmarva is finally heating up after a strangely cool spring. The Shorebirds seem to be heating up as well, and after Wednesday's 4-3 comeback victory against West Virginia, they have now won four straight. But they will have to stay hot without infielder/designated hitter Miguel Delacruz, who injured his leg in the bottom of the eighth inning while sliding into second. He was carried off the field by stretcher and taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center. "We don't know yet," said Shorebirds manager Gary Kendall. "It didn't look too good. It looked a little above the ankle. I don't know whether it's a dislocation or a break." West Virginia jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on a Carlos Corporan solo homer in the first inning, and Agustin Septimo's two RBI double in the second. The Shorebirds came back and loaded the bases on singles in the second inning, but shortstop Rafael Diaz grounded to second base for the final out, stranding the runners. Shorebirds' starter Kevin Hart got into trouble in the third inning. With bases loaded and only one out, Hart got West Virginia's Josh Murray to ground to third, allowing third baseman Juan Gutierrez to throw home for the force out. He then struck out Freddy Parejo swinging. Hart harnessed control of his slider and allowed only two more baserunners before being replaced by Josh Potter after six innings. West Virginia starter Josh Wahpepah did not allow a hit for the three following innings. He allowed six baserunners, but Delmarva could not get any across the plate, and only one advanced to second. "(Wahpepah) did a good job changing speeds," Kendall said. "Tonight he had the changeup and the breaking ball working for him, and it took us a while. They pitched him deep into the game, we managed to get a couple of swings on him, then got to the bullpen." Delacruz finally got to Wahpepah in the sixth inning with a hard single to left field. C.J. Smith and Quincy Ascencion then hit back to back doubles, cutting the Power's lead to 3-2. Gutierrez singled to right, scoring Ascencion from second to tie the game, but Gutierrez was tagged out in a rundown when Power right fielder Adam Mannon's throw was cut off. It was Delacruz again who was the catalyst in the eighth, as he drew a walk from Power reliever Derek DeCarlo to start the inning. Ascencion legged out an infield single that was received behind second base by West Virginia shortstop Alcides Escobar. Escobar hurried a throw to second baseman Hernan Iribarren, forcing Delacruz to hurry the awkward slide that produced his injury. As he lay face down in agony, Delacruz had the mindfulness to keep his toes on the bag, for West Virginia attempted to tag him out. It would turn out to be the most vital detail of the game. Pete Maestrales came in to run for Delacruz after the delay, and scored Delmarva's fourth run on Matt Houston's game-winning double. "(Wahpepah) was throwing the ball well," Houston said. "We were battling. Got some guys on base, got to the bullpen, and good things happened." Delacruz was 1-for-2 with a walk, reached base on an error, and scored one run. Smith, Ascencion, and Houston, were each 2-for-4 with an RBI. Gutierrez was 2-for-3 with an RBI and an intentional walk. Hart (4-2) received the win, recording three hits, three earned runs, five walks and six strikeouts in six innings. Potter pitched two scoreless innings; David Haehnel pitched a perfect ninth for his 14th save. No West Virginia player recorded more than one hit. Shorebirds pitching held Iribarren (batting .475 against the Shorebirds this season) and Escobar (.359) hitless. Wahpepah (3-3) gave up seven hits, three earned runs, three walks, and struck out two in six innings pitched, taking the loss for the Power. The game also began a Delmarva streak: Two straight errorless games. "I don't want to jinx it," Kendall said. "But we did real well (defensively)."
  18. Link while active, text follows: www.wvgazette.com/section...2005060246 W.Va. Power notebook By Doug Smock Charleston Gazette Staff writer The 30 major-league baseball teams are preparing to restock their farm systems via the amateur draft Tuesday, but don?t expect a roster shuffle for the West Virginia Power just yet. And if the parent Milwaukee Brewers follow the script written by Baseball America, the first-round draft pick will be a year from heading to the West Virginia Power. That publication, considered a bible of sorts for the minor leagues, sees high school outfielder Cameron Maybin of Asheville, N.C., heading to the Brewers with the fifth overall pick. That will certainly send him to one of the Brewers? two rookie-league teams, in Arizona and Helena, Mont. Any shakeup in the Power roster would come later in the season as players excel at Helena, a Pioneer League member. (Milwaukee does not have a short-season Class A team.) As Andy Barch, the Power?s broadcaster and director of media relations, tells, the Brewers won?t send a high school player directly to Class A. But a promising college player may be a different story. Maybin played for Asheville?s state-champion Roberson High and also starred last summer for Cincinnati?s well-known Midland Redskins of Connie Mack ball. He hit five home runs and was named the tournament?s most valuable player as the Redskins won the Connie Mack World Series title. Known as a ?five-tool? player, Maybin was a batboy for the Asheville Tourists from 1999 to 2002. As Chris Hook?s ?In The Yard? magazine notes, there is a legacy to that chore ? author Thomas Wolfe, North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams and future ironman Cal Ripken Jr. also served in that capacity. When Maybin was batboy, he already was hitting home runs out of McCormick Field in batting practice. ***The Power (17-37) finished the first half of one of its longer eight-game road trips Thursday by beating Delmarva 8-2, thus avoiding a four-game sweep. From Salisbury, Md., the team bused to Lakewood, N.J., for four games with the BlueClaws. After that series comes a punishing stretch for the Power players. After a night game Monday, the team travels 525 miles back home, getting in around 9 a.m. Tuesday. The Power begins its eight-game home stand Tuesday night and then plays a businessperson?s special Wednesday afternoon. A 15-inning game, such as happened last week at Appalachian Power Park against Lake County, would be most unwelcome. ***The Power erupted for 15 hits Thursday, scoring six times combined in the seventh and eighth innings. After Delmarva starter Carlos Perez left after the sixth inning with the game tied 2-2, the Power roughed up reliever Ryan Schwabe. West Virginia went ahead in the seventh on a throwing error off an Alcides Escobar bunt. After a double play, Grant Richardson, Josh Brady and Nestor Corredor all hit RBI singles. Freddy Parejo tripled to lead off the eighth inning and Escobar doubled him in. Escobar scored on a two-out error. Four of the six runs off Schwabe (0-1) were unearned. Dave Johnson (1-1) picked up the win for West Virginia despite yielding a game-tying run in the sixth. That run was unearned, and was set up on an error by Josh Murray. The victory snapped a five-game losing streak. ***Infielder William Lewis, who was placed on the disabled list with a sore right hand, could be back on the field by the beginning of the home stand. There is no timetable set for hard-luck right-hander Mark Rogers, the 2004 first-round draft pick. Rogers developed a deep blood blister on the middle finger of his throwing hand May 22. The objective is simple: Get it healed 100 percent, without infection. ***Carlos Corporan took the team lead with his fifth home run in the Power?s 4-3 loss to the Shorebirds Wednesday. One of the Power?s two switch-hitters, he has smacked homers from both sides of the plate. From which side does he hit best? Barch thinks the left side, even though Corporan is a natural righty. Then again, ?He hasn?t had a whole lot of opportunities from the right side,? Barch said.
  19. Final: West Virginia 8, Delmarva (Orioles) 2 West Virginia Site Game Summary: POWER SNAP FIVE GAME LOSING STREAKSALISBURY, MD ? Jason Fransz cut the lead in half with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning and Pete Maestrales tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single. Freddy Parejo scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh on a throwing error by Delmarva third baseman Juan Gutierrez. Grant Richardson, Josh Brady and Nestor Corredor drove in the next three runs on back-to-back-to-back two-out RBI singles to give the Power a 6-2 lead. The Power added two more runs in the top of the eighth inning. Alcides Escobar drove in the first run with a double and Escobar scored the final run of the game later in the inning on an error committed by Delmarva second baseman Rafael Diaz. Dave Johnson (1-1) earned the victory, Ryan Schwabe (0-1) obtained the loss. The Power improve to 17-37 with the win and the Shorebirds move to 25-29 with the loss. 21. Link, text follows: www.minorleaguebaseball.c...;fext=.jsp Send Mark an email -- has anyone asked him about Brewerfan.net yet? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif mailto:mrogersmlb@yahoo.com Hey everyone, With the draft coming up on Tuesday, I've been thinking about everything that's happened in the past year. Obviously, a lot has changed since last June. Looking back, I can't believe it's only been a year. I've grown up and changed so much it seems like it had to have been longer ago. Last year at this time, I hadn't graduated from high school yet. Now, I'm living on my own, paying my own bills, doing my own laundry and cooking my own food. It's just a totally different situation. My laundry and cooking skills have gotten better, but they certainly aren't anywhere close to my mom's. Lately, my cooking specialty has been anything I can throw in the microwave. If it's not lobster or steak, I'm pretty much a lost cause. I can do surf 'n turf, and that's about the extent of it. I hope you wouldn't want any vegetables with it. The last couple of weeks on the field have not been that great. I started a week ago Sunday. I went 2 1/3 innings and everything was going well. I had struck out five, but I had to come out because of a blister on the middle finger of my pitching hand and it broke open in that third inning. Since then, I've been taking care of the blister and doing extra conditioning. I was using alum on the finger after keeping it dry with zinc oxide the first couple of days. Then, I'd go do my conditioning, come back in, soak it in pickling paste (the same stuff they use to make pickles, but in paste form) and go from there. After a couple of days, it started to harden and now it looks like a normal finger again. I threw again about four days ago, and it's completely healed. I'm scheduled to start again this coming Tuesday. The littlest thing can keep you out. A blister can keep you out for almost two weeks. On the road, when you can't play, it's really tough. When you're hurt, it makes the game that much harder. It's so much easier staying healthy. I've never had this problem before. It's frustrating. It does, however, give me some time to answer your e-mails, so keep them coming. Thanks for your article and the explanation of the Toastman. As a long time fan of the Charleston Alley Cats/West Virginia Power, we all know how much fun he brings to the ballpark. Do you think ball players at the Class A level have a thick enough skin to "hear past" his chants, or do you think the Toastman creeps into their minds and gives the home team a huge advantage? -- Mark O., Blacksburg, Va. Mark, I wouldn't say a huge advantage, but I'm sure it gets into the heads of some players. For a lot of us, this is our first experience of pro baseball in front of fans. And he knows everything about you, every last stat. I'm sure it gets to some people, and not for others. Either way, it's good to have him on our side. I'm 14 years old and a big fan of yours. I was wondering how hard it was for you to get exposure as a prospect while pitching in Maine. I am currently pitching in a small New York suburb and I think it would be nearly impossible to get noticed here. Thanks a lot for your time! I should be in Lakewood to see you guys play on June 5. -- Adam Adam, the biggest thing I did wasn't so much to get out of Maine. The Atlanta Braves had a small camp in Augusta, Maine. I went every year just to get my name on the board, get me into the system. Then, in my junior year in high school, when I was getting really serious about pursuing baseball, I talked to some scouts who were at the Atlanta Braves thing, and through them I got invited to the East Coast Showcase and the Area Code Games and I kind of got noticed from there. Local colleges were good, too, getting my name out there as a reference point for other schools. See you in Lakewood. I am curious how you feel about being bombarded with autograph requests and do you accept autograph requests via the mail to the stadium? I have a Baseball America cover I would love to have you autograph and the chances of getting it are slim since we lost our SAL team this season as they moved from Columbia to Greenville, S.C. -- Pete L., Lt. Col USAF Lt. Col, with autographs, it depends on the situation. I'll always accept mail at the stadium and send it back. But sometimes, I get 20 things in one envelope and that's hard to do. But if you send one or two things, it's something we're encouraged to do and something we like to do. You guys usually make it easy for us and we just hand the envelope to our clubbie and it's in the mail the next day.
