  3. 22-year-old Callix Crabbe would be the top second base prospect in most organizations -- he'll see big league time, but it won't be with Milwaukee unless Mr. Weeks is moved to another position. The fact Crabbe is tied to that one position isn't a plus, however, in terms of any future utility role.

  8. Link while active, text follows: Southern League profile - Q&A with Stars' skipper Don Money By DAVID BRANDT dbrandt@jacksonsun.com Don Money left Busch Stadium in 1982 with no World Series title. And that was terrific news for St. Louis Cardinals fans in the West Tennessee area, but bad news for the current Huntsville Stars manager. Money was the designated hitter for the Milwaukee Brewers when his team lost four games to three to the Cardinals in the '82 Fall Classic. The memories of the Brewers teams Money played for are still fresh in the mind of a guy who spent 16 seasons in the big leagues - five with the Philadelphia Phillies and 11 with Milwaukee. The four-time All-Star finished his career with 1,623 hits, 176 home runs and a .261 batting average. A few questions for the Huntsville Stars manager:- Q: What was it like playing in the 1982 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals? A: Well, we'd been trying for so long to finally get to the Series and then we finally did. Obviously, it was incredible. Just getting there was amazing. We played the California Angels in the American League championship and came back after being down two games to win 3-2. Then we had to travel to Busch Stadium for the World Series - it all happened so fast. We won that first game in the World Series and we had a real chance, it just didn't work out in some of the later games. I can remember those last two games at Busch Stadium when we had a 3-2 lead going into Games 6 and 7. In Game 6, (Cardinals pitcher) John Stuper just pounded us and we lost 13-1. Then in Game 7, it seemed like the Cardinals were just getting all their base hits to fall in and we couldn't. We jumped out to a 3-1 lead but then we lost 6-3 and that was it. But still, it was an incredible experience. Q: Talk about some of those good Brewers teams from the late 70s and early 80s. How was it playing with Robin Yount, Paul Molitor, Cecil Cooper and all those other guys? A: You know, for several years, probably from 1977-1983, we were one of the best teams in the American League. There were just a lot of other good teams during that time - the Yankees, the Orioles. But we won a lot, too. The best thing about those teams was we all grew up together. Heck, I was 26 years old when I got to Milwaukee and I was one of the old men at first. When I got traded to the Brewers from Philadelphia - I had to look on a map to see where Milwaukee was - but it turned out to be one of the best things that happened to me. Our teams had great players and very good camaraderie. When you play with guys for six, seven, eight years like Yount, Molitor, Cooper, (Ben) Ogilvie, you really start to become a family. When our team really started to get good was in the early 80s when we made that trade with the Cardinals for (Pete) Vuckovich, (Ted) Simmons and Rollie Fingers. Simmons could really hit and Vuckovich was a good starting pitcher, but it was Fingers that made the huge difference. Before, we had never really been able to close games, but Rollie gave us that great end-of-the-game guy. Q: During your playing days, where were the best places to play and the toughest pitchers you faced. A: I used to love playing at Boston - I was a dead pull right-handed hitter and that Green Monster always looked good. You know, back then Baltimore had great pitching, but I always seemed to do well against them. Yankee Stadium was obviously pretty awesome with the history and all of that. As far as pitchers, back when I was in the National League, Bob Gibson and Juan Marichal were very tough. Not to mention guys like Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman. Q: In 1972, you were on an awful Phillies team that won only 59 games, yet your ace pitcher Steve Carlton won 27 games and the Cy Young award , the only player to win that award for a last-place team. What was that like to watch? A: It was weird, because it's not like we tried any harder when Steve was on the mound. Of course, we knew if we got two or three runs we had a really good shot at winning the game. (Carlton) was just unbelievable that season. He had 45 percent of our wins that season and only gave up 250 hits or so in about 350 innings. He's a Hall of Famer and one of the best I've ever seen. Q: Why do you still enjoy coaching in the minor leagues? A: I enjoy it, it's a lot of fun. Sure, it's trying at times, but if I didn't really enjoy this stuff I wouldn't do it. I like working with the kids and don't mind riding the buses. I just love baseball. miva.jacksonsun.com/miva/...4247153073 JUSTIN VENEMAN/The Jackson Sun - Huntsville Stars manager Don Money spent 16 seasons in the big leagues, including the final 11with the Milwaukee Brewers. His only shot at a World Series ring came in 1982 when the St. Louis Cardinals rallied to beat the Brew Crew in Games 6 and 7 of the Fall Classic for the title. http://miva.jacksonsun.com/miva/photos/200504247153073.jpg

  10. David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update: Vinny and the vind cool down D'Jaxx It may as well been Mars........ A cold 49° game-time temperature, made colder by a 20 mph wind blowing to right, cut Friday's meager West Tenn crowd of over 2,200 to just more than half on Saturday. Those who were present were as silent as space........ Football weather........ The funny part is, announcer Brett Pollock asked the press in the media booth, who were just as silent, if this weather would have kept the fans from a football game....... The quick response was no....... Still, I don't blame the fans for not coming out. I don't think I would have either, and if I had, it wouldn't be for more than three innings........ One of the reasons I enjoy attending baseball games so much is that I expect to enjoy it in baseball weather. Enuf said. Nelson Cruz was out of the lineup for the first time since the season began...... Friday night, he ran full gear on an RBI grounder to first in his 2nd at-bat when he felt a twinge in his hamstring. He's tight and sore back there. No word on how much of the roadtrip he'll miss, but I do believe he'll be back soon........ The update on Brandon Gemoll is good. He wound up with a laceration on his chin, a wrist sprain, a slight quad injury, and a mild concussion --- all that in a collision last Wednesday with Mobile's Greg Sain....... As far as the concussion, the laceration, and the quad, he's doing very well, according to Stars trainer David Yeager....... The wrist is still holding him back. There's some limitation to the motion, but the strength is slowly coming back. He will probably be out for the remainder of this roadtrip. It was Vinny Rottino's coming out night and it's nice to see him out of his shell. His contribution in this night's victory was huge...... The Midwest League slugger who broke Prince Fielder's RBI record last year, started off the season 4-for-34, but after last night, his average is up above .200........ Rottino, 5-for-10 now in his last three games with three doubles, hit two of them tonight and drove in an insurance run in the 5th inning, putting the Stars back at .500, but still two games behind the Diamond Jaxx in the SL North....... The Stars also got key hits tonight from Kennard Bibbs and Jeff Winchester. Bibbs led off the 1st with a double, his 5th of the year, on a 2-1 pitch which came off the top of the wall. Bibbs is 3rd among club leaders in doubles....... With two out, Tony Zuniga, batting in the clean-up spot for the first time this season, hit a 2-and-0 pitch to the opposite field for a line drive single to right to score Bibbs........ Rottino, batting .154 at the time, picked up his first extra-base hit of the season Friday night. In his first at-bat Saturday, he sharply bounced a well-placed 1-0 pitch down the third base line past a diving Casey McGehee, into foul territory. Zuniga coasted into third safely, but the ball was juggled in left field by Matt Murton. His throw to the cut-off man was dropped, allowing Zuniga to score and Rottino to reach second. The Stars took a 2-0 lead. Rottino was given credit, of course, for the double...... Jae Kuk-Ryu's first pitch to Jeff Winchester was lined into left for an RBI single, scoring Rottino, and the Stars were off to a 3-0 lead, their biggest first inning so far this season....... Ryu, ranked 28th among the Cubs' top 30 prospects, was primarily a reliever last year for the Diamond Jaxx, spending most of the season coming back from elbow tendinitis and weakness in his lower back. The pesky Diamond Jaxx, 2nd in batting in the league (.318) , came back, however, with four consecutive extra-base hits to tie the game --- all after Dana Eveland got two quick outs in the bottom of the inning....... Matt Murton, 2nd leading hitter in the league, and 11th among the Cubs' top 30 prospects, went ahead on the count from Eveland, 2-and-0, then lifted a breaking ball high in the air to the opposite field. It sliced away from the scoreboard, where it would have gone over had there been no wind, and landed over the double-decker signs in right-center for his 3rd home run of the season, the Diamond Jaxx' 13th homer of the season, and the 11th allowed by Stars pitching this year....... It was the first allowed by Eveland this season and his first since he's been with the Stars...... Brandon Sing quickly followed with a double down the left field line. Casey McGehee, who drove in three runs Friday night, knocked Eveland's fastball for a double down the first base line past John Vanden Berg. Rottino had to play it near the bullpen, and Brandon Sing scored easily making it 3-2....... Finally Buck Coats finished the string of extra-base hits with a double on a 3-2 pitch, lined back through the middle by Enrique Cruz to left-center. Tony Gwynn Jr. overruns the ball, and McGehee scores to tie the game. Gwynn was given an error ....... Adam Greenberg struck out to end the inning, but six runs on eight hits in just the first inning looked like this was going to be a long and interesting game. But things quieted down for the next three innings. After giving up a leadoff single to returning Diamond Jaxx catcher Casey Kopitzke, Eveland retired 12 in a row....... Ryu (the "R" is not pronounced) was touched for a one-out single and a stolen base by Callix Crabbe in the 3rd inning, and a leadoff single by Winchester in the 4th, his 2nd hit that would help raise his average to .286 after the night....... In the 5th, Ryu's control disintegrated. Tony Gwynn, Jr. slapped a one-out 1-0 pitch to right-center for a line drive hit....... Gwynn now has hits in nine of his last 12 games. Gwynn is also a much better hitter out of the # 2 hole in the lineup, hitting .364 there, as opposed to .167 this year in the leadoff spot, where he was installed early in the season........ On the first pitch to Crabbe, Ryu uncorks a wild pitch in the dirt, skipping in back of Kopitzke to the screen, advancing Gwynn to second........ Ryu's 1-1 offering went between Kopitzke's legs back to the screen, advancing Gwynn to third...... With the tie-breaking run on third, Ryu walks Crabbe on 3-and-1....... Now the Diamond Jaxx have a double-play situation......... Zuniga swings and misses at his first pitch, fouls off the next, takes one outside, then Ryu bounces his third wild pitch of the inning, away from Kopitzke toward the dugout! Gwynn scores and the Stars take a 4-3 lead........ Zuniga strikes out for the 2nd out, but Rottino takes out some insurance with a line drive double down the third base line, scoring Crabbe......... Four of the five runs the Stars scored tonight were with two out. Eveland got out of a 6th inning jam, striking out McGehee and Coats after giving up back-to-back hits by Murton and Sing that put runners on the corners, then finished his evening by getting Adam Greenberg to ground out....... Matt Ford worked a scoreless 7th, giving up a hit to Felix Pie, and Mitch Stetter worked two scoreless for his 1st save....... Stetter becomes the 3rd member of the Stars relief corps to chalk up a save this month, joining Matt DeWitt and Jerome Gamble....... Stetter has allowed only one run in 10 2/3 innings and recorded at least one strikeout in six straight appearances. Sunday afternoon, the Stars will send Dennis Sarfate (1-1, 3.41) to the hill against Ricky Nolasco, whose brother David you may remember, pitched for the Stars two years ago, and was released from the organization before the season...... Ricky is the Cubs' #19 prospect. Nolasco beat the Stars three times last year. I've added a couple of new features to my Standings link....... God grant me the discipline, but I'll try to keep up with the team home-road splits, with particular attention to club batting averages and club ERAs. Also, there's a breakdown of each player's batting averages per starting lineup position (except for pitchers), and I am emphasizing just starting players in the game. These stats should prove to be pretty interesting as the season winds along.

  15. Huntsville Times Sunday Notebook -- link while active, text follows: www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...292320.xml Mark McCarter Covering the bases The Huntsville Stars visit new territory this week. They open a three-game series Monday in Pearl, Miss., outside Jackson, against the Mississippi Braves. The franchise relocated there from Greenville, S.C., when city and county officials there balked at construction of a new stadium or renovation to the current park. Don Mincher, Southern League president and former Stars general manager, was in Pearl on Monday for the inaugural game at Trustmark Park. "It was great," he said. "It's along the lines of Montgomery and Jacksonville, all those stadiums that have a lot of room on the concourses and aisles. There are a lot of seats and a berm area. It's just beautiful." ... Pretty as the park might be, typical of moving into any place new, there were some last-minute hassles. Laughed Mincher, "They were still putting up fencing. They were shoving stuff back into corners, under beds, hiding things to get through the night." ... Mincher was one of 18 VIPs who threw out a ceremonial first-pitch. As he did earlier at Joe Davis Stadium, the former big-leaguer threw a strike. "There's only one thing you need to guard against: Don't one-hop it there." ... Mississippi drew 18,097 for its first two dates, which is more than Huntsville and Tennessee drew in seven dates. ... The Stars' six-game win streak came to an ugly end. Their pitchers yielded 12 hits, seven walks and walked in three runs and wild-pitched in another in a loss at West Tenn Friday. Line of the week Huntsville second baseman Callix Crabbe made five plate appearances in Thursday's victory over Mobile at Joe Davis Stadium but was only 1-for-1 at bat. That single didn't play a part in either of his RBIs. Crabbe had three walks in the game - one with the bases loaded - and the game-winning sacrifice fly, which came on a full count. "I was just taking what they were giving me," Crabbe said. "My job is to try to get on base first and score runs for this team." The walks didn't surprise Stars manager Don Money. "He's usually got a pretty good eye," Money said. Although, "when he gets in a funk, he'll swing at breaking balls in the dirt." Around the league The first two weeks of the season have been, to use Mincher's description, "unusual'' in the number of streaking teams. Montgomery opened with seven consecutive wins. Birmingham won seven in a row. Carolina opened with five straight wins, and had five in a row going into Saturday's play. The Stars won six in a row on their homestand. ... On the opposite end of the spectrum, Mobile had a franchise-worst 10-game losing streak it finally ended Friday. Chattanooga lost seven in a row, Tennessee began the season 0-7 and Mississippi got off to an 0-5 start. ... Jacksonville second baseman Jesus Soto became the youngest player to start a game in the Southern League this season, at 18 years, seven months, 13 days. ... The Suns drew 11,318, second-highest in stadium history, Friday night. ... Ex-Star Noochie Varner had a three-run homer for Tennessee on Thursday. ... No wonder Montgomery is 10-5. The Biscuits are batting .328 as a team. ... The hitters are clearly ahead of the pitchers at this stage of the season. Through Friday, the league's composite batting average was .277. ... Adam Bass, the former University of Alabama-Huntsville pitcher, has had two quality starts out of three for Tennessee. But he is 0-2 after yielding two runs on six hits in six innings for the punchless (4-11) Smokies. ... Corwin Malone, once among the White Sox's top prospects, is back with Birmingham after missing '04 with Tommy John surgery. On deck The Stars finish their series at West Tenn Sunday, then travel to Pearl, Miss., Monday. The Stars are back home Thursday, hosting the Tennessee Smokies (and ex-UAH pitcher Bass) in a four-game series.
  16. Because the Marlins and Cardinals share Roger Dean Stadium, the Manatees continue their road trip Sunday in the same stadium -- against a different team...and another power failure here, that's two tonight! Brevard County Game Summary (Hammerheads' Site): It took 12 innings, but the Hammerheads finally pulled out a 4-3 victory over the Brevard County Manatees tonight at Roger Dean Stadium. Hammerheads catcher Tony Arnerich proved to be the game?s hero, knocking in the winning run with a base hit to left in the bottom of the 12th. Kevin Rival (0-1), who pitched the final two innings for Brevard, took the loss. Manuel Olivera (1-0), who pitched the top of the 12th, gets his first win on the season. The game began with the promise of a pitching duel between Brevard starter Carlos Villanueva and Jupiter?s James Russ. It in fact was that way up until both men left the game after each pitched six innings. Both men left the game with Brevard leading 2-1. Villanueva was solid in his third appearance of the year, giving up one run on five hits while striking out seven. Russ faced 25 batters, yielding two runs on four hits and striking out six. The 2-1 score would remain until the bottom of the 8th, when power became the story of the evening. After a Jose Campusano infield single and an Alejandro De Aza sacrifice, the power went out at Roger Dean Stadium. The outage was caused by a surge, which shut down everything in the stadium. It took seven minutes for the lights to turn on and play to resume. Once it did, Frank Moore grounded out to second, before Angel Molina delivered a two-run blast that hit the light tower in left, putting the Hammerheads up 3-2. Jupiter reliever Kevin Cave could not hold the lead in the 9th, yielding a solo homer to designated hitter Jeff Eure on the first pitch of the inning. It was Cave?s first blown save of the year, an uncharacteristic hiccup from the Hammerhead bullpen, which has been outstanding as of late. Coming into the game, the bullpen had pitched 16 and two-thirds innings, allowing only two earned runs in their last four games, including five perfect innings last night. In the bottom of the 12th, Michael Tucker singled up the middle to begin the winning rally. After Kevin Randel struck out looking, Reggie Abercrombie was intentionally walked, opening the door for Arnerich. Arnerich singled to left, driving in the game winning run and capping off a wild night at the Dean. The Hammerheads won the series 2-1, evening the season series between the two teams at three games apiece. The Manatees will remain in Abacoa for the next three games to face the Palm Beach Cardinals.

  19. Final: Huntsville 5, West Tenn (Cubs) 3 LHP Dana Eveland has walked three, struck out 24 in 21.2 IP... Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link with Mitch Stetter photo, text follows: www.huntsvillestars.com/s...newsId=571 Vinny Rottino collected three hits, scored a run and knocked in a run and Mitch Stetter tossed two scoreless innings in relief to preserve the Stars 5-3 win over West Tenn Saturday night in the second game of a three-game series. The Stars won for a seventh time in eight games to even their record at 8-8, while the DiamondJaxx lost for just the second time in eight games and slipped to 10-6. The Stars won for just the second time in nine games on the road and handed the DiamondJaxx their fourth loss in nine home games. The visitors jumped on starter Jae-kuk Ryu for three runs in the first inning, their highest scoring first inning of the year. Kennard Bibbs led off with a double and scored on a two-out single by Tony Zuniga, who knocked in his eighth run of the year. Rottino followed with a double to left field that moved Zuniga to third before Matt Murton?s errant throw back to the infield allowed Zuniga to score to make it 2-0. Jeff Winchester then singled into left field to plate Rottino to knock in his fifth run of the season. Stars? starter Dana Eveland, who had yielded only two runs in his first three starts, could not hold the lead and gave up three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Murton belted a two-out, solo home run to right field, his third of the year to get the home team on the board. Brandon Sing doubled and scored on a double by Casey McGehee, who drove in his fourth run of the series, before coming into score on a Bucky Coats single. The score remained tied at three until the fifth when the visitors tallied twice with the help of wildness by Ryu. The Korean right-hander yielded a one-out single to Tony Gwynn, Jr. and then uncorked three wild pitches to push the Stars center fielder across the plate with the go-ahead run. Callix Crabbe had worked a walk after Gwynn?s hit and scored on a double by Rottino with two away that gave Huntsville a 5-3 edge. Eveland retired 12 in a row after allowing a leadoff single in the second inning before Murton led off the sixth with a single, moved to second on an infield hit by Sing and to third base on a throwing error by Zuniga. However, the Stars southpaw buckled down and struck out McGehee and Coats and induced Adam Greenberg to ground out to end the threat and keep the Stars in the lead. Matt Ford worked a scoreless seventh inning and Stetter took over in the eighth. He allowed a one-out single and got out of the frame with a ground ball double play and stranded Jose Reyes at first after a one-out, pinch-hit single in the ninth. Stetter earned his first save of the year and joined Matt DeWitt and Jerome Gamble in the save column for the Stars. The left-hander has allowed only one run in 10 2/3rd innings of work and has recorded at least one strikeout in six straight appearances. The Stars will send right-hander Dennis Sarfate to the hill for the final game of the series Sunday against Jaxx right-hander Ricky Nolasco. Coverage of the game gets underway at 12:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. 21. Nashville Site: Saturday night's series opener between the Nashville Sounds and Iowa Cubs, scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and delayed initially by rain, has been postponed due to a power outage in the area surrounding Greer Stadium. The game will be made up as part of a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The power outage was a result of a one-car accident involving an electrical pole beyond the center field fence. Officials were unable to determine when power would be restored. In Sunday's twinbill, Nashville right-hander Ben Hendrickson (0-1, 6.14) will start the opener and face Iowa southpaw Renyel Pinto (0-2, 11.32). Left-hander Jeff Housman (1-0, 4.02) will start the nightcap for the Sounds and face right-hander Sergio Mitre (1-2, 4.24).
  22. Saturday afternoon?s scheduled game between the Lake County Captains and the West Virginia Power has been postponed due to inclement weather. The two teams will attempt to make up the game as part of a doubleheader on Monday evening, April 25th, beginning at 6:05 PM (5:05 Central). The doubleheader will be two seven-inning games -- Captains' site
  23. Oklahoma's Jason Standridge: RedHawks starting pitcher Jason Standridge needed only three pitches to retire the first two batters in the seventh inning Friday night. But before the inning was over, Standridge himself was retired from the game. Nashville broke open a tied game by scoring five two-out runs in the seventh inning, en route to a 7-2 win, with a north wind blowing in at SBC Bricktown Ballpark. "They're not that good of a hitting team," Standridge said. "It's just that we made some bad pitches when they did hit it. But they're not good of a hitting team. We can't give them too much credit. We just made some bad pitches and we walked guys." Hmmm...bulletin board?
