Brewers prospect Bonet eager to fulfill family MLB tradition RHP Jarrette Bonet, from a family of MLB veterans, is turning a strong first pro season in Wilson into a bid to reach the majors on his own terms By Paul Durham, Wilson Times While playing professional baseball might be a family tradition for Jarrette Bonet, the Wilson Warbirds pitcher hopes to add to that heritage all the way to the big leagues. Bonet, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound right-hander, is off to a pretty good start in his first season of pro ball after signing a free-agent minor league deal with the Milwaukee Brewers last summer. Bonet skipped Rookie ball altogether and came straight to Wilson at the conclusion of spring training. So far, he’s been very impressive at times, if not consistent in his eight appearances, all starts, for the Single-A Carolina League Warbirds. Bonet is 1-2 with a 5.20 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 36 1/3 innings. Opponents are batting .246 against him and his WHIP is 1.35. Bonet has cooled off a bit after a hot start that saw the Brewers name him their Minor League Pitcher of the Month for April after he went 1-1 with a 3.09 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings. Bonet said that his success has come directly from hard work. “I’m working really, really, really hard for this, waiting four years for the opportunities,” he said during a recent interview at Wilson Ballpark. “I’ll be here and there’s hard work every day — like every single day — but I’ll never quit. I think this is the reason I’m doing well right now. I think it’s like, my hard work and I never quit.” Bonet, who hails from Manati, Puerto Rico, has played baseball in the United States before at San Jacinto (Texas) Junior College as well as with the Trenton Thunder summer collegiate team in the MLB Draft League. He said that experience helped him get to where he is, but the pro game is much different. “My preparation right now is so much better,” Bonet said. “What I did in college, my first year in college, I was a little lazy, but I feel like here, you can’t do this. You need to work a lot. This is one of the adjustments I do, and I work on my mechanics a lot in the offseason, like in the spring training, too. So, I think it’s everything like this that has helped me a lot right now.” Bonet was a key member of Puerto Rico’s team in the World Baseball Softball Confederation U18 Baseball World Cup in 2023. He threw 4 1/3 innings of hitless relief to get the win in Puerto Rico’s upset of No. 2-seeded United States. Bonet said that playing for P.R. pitching coach Dicky Gonzalez Baez was a great experience as well. “He played in Japan, and I talked to him (very much), and he’s helped me a lot, like little things I need to learn,” Bonet said. “I think it’s helped me a lot.” Bonet comes from a big-league family with uncles Jose Valentin and Javier Valentin playing a combined 26 years of MLB baseball while cousin Jesmuel Valentin played for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2018. All three, like Bonet, are from Manati, a town of less than 40,000 known for its lush tropical beaches. While Bonet hopes to follow in their footsteps, he’s not comparing himself to his relatives — or anyone else. “No, for me, I don’t feel that pressure,” he said. “But probably, like the people say that you need to be good, like, same or better with your family. But I don’t feel that pressure. I play for me, for my future and for doing better, whether with my family or not.” While Bonet is eager to climb the ladder in the Brewers organization, he likes the vibe in Wilson so far, especially Wilson Ballpark. “The park, I think it’s that part of the city is, like, chill,” he said. “I think the teammates here, there’s a lot of good teammates, a lot of good people. I think it feels special here, like, it’s good.”

WARBIRDS NOTEBOOK: Players come and go — and come back — as season heats up Amid constant call-ups and returns in their inaugural season, the Wilson Warbirds juggle a shifting Brewers prospect roster, uneven offense, solid pitching and steady crowds By Paul Durham, Wilson Times As fans of the Wilson Warbirds become acclimated to the young talent in the Milwaukee Brewers organization, they might want to pay attention because the players might not be here long. The Wilson roster was set at the outset of Single-A Carolina League play April 3 and didn’t change until April 18 when right-handed pitcher Enniel Cortez went on the Injured List. Since then, the Brewers have made 15 roster changes affecting the Warbirds as players come, go and come again. Two of the newest Warbirds — outfielder/first baseman Tyler Rodriguez and catcher Rylan Mills — enjoyed a memorable first week in Wilson with homers that led to victories at Wilson Ballpark over the weekend. Two players on the first Warbirds roster — RHP Garrett Hodges and utilityman Luiyin Alastre — earned promotions to the next rung in the Brewers organizational ladder to High-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers over the last few weeks. Two more, catcher Eric Martinez and pitcher Joshua Quezada, were sent to Triple-A Nashville Sounds last weekend. However, Martinez, who just had 19 at-bats in Wilson, has been transferred to the Development List while Quezada returned to Wilson on Monday after throwing 1 1/3 hitless innings Saturday for the Sounds. Warbirds manager Eddy Morgan is the person who gets to tell the players that they are getting called up and that’s definitely a perk of his job. “That’s the coolest thing, right?” said Morgan, in his first season of pro ball after two decades as a college head coach in Wisconsin. “You see their face, and they’re like, oh, yeah, this is awesome! Yeah, to me, that’s pretty cool. A lot of people have a lot of influence. It’s just not the manager — coaches, our entire staff. “I think our staff here is as good as I’ve been around. I know I’ve been in college for a long time, but just talking to people, this staff communicates well. I think we connect with the players really well. And to me, it has everything to do with the staff and (the player) versus the manager. But I get to tell him!” Hodges, who played at Gardner-Webb University, went 2-1 in Wilson and notched his first victory at Wisconsin on May 13 while Alastre is hitting .310 for the Timber Rattlers after hitting just .160 in 15 games with the Warbirds. “That’s what they’re all playing for, right?” Morgan said. “And no offense to Wilson — we love it here — but the goal is not to stay in Wilson. The goal is to advance and get to Wisconsin and then to (Double-A) Biloxi and Nashville and the big leagues. So, Hodges was the latest in the way he was throwing the ball. He deserved the call-up now. Ran his fastball to 98 the other day. Very confident. Looks in control. And so, he’s ready for that next stage. And I think we’ll see some more of these guys grow up.” ATTENDANCE SO FAR So far, the Warbirds have averaged 2,336 spectators per game with two sellouts (3,700) and Saturday’s game, May 16, with 3,475 in attendance. The smallest crowd so far was 1,003, the opening game of the second homestand. The average per homestand has decreased from 2,333 in the first six games to 2,202 in the second to 2,164 for this past week. This week’s games are the first of two back-to-back homestands for the Warbirds in their inaugural season. The next one will run June 30 through July 12 and will be followed by a two-week stretch without games at Wilson Ballpark. The MLB All-Star Game break is July 13-16, then the Warbirds head to Hickory for three games against the Crawdads before going to Charleston for a six-game series starting July 21. NUMBERS GAME The Warbirds offense has struggled much of the season with the team ranked last in the Carolina League in hits (248), runs (179), batting average (.202) and slugging percentage (.322) while No. 2 in strikeouts with 429. However, there are some bright spots in the lineup. Center fielder Jose Anderson has hammered eight home runs, tying him for the Carolina League lead while right fielder Handelfry Encarnacion has slugged six homers. Both are in the top 10 in RBIs with 26 and 25, respectively. While neither has enough at-bats to qualify for the league leaders, Wilson outfielder/DH Pedro Ibarguen is hitting .315 (23 for 73) and infielder Luis Lameda is batting at a .293 clip (24 for 82). Wilson’s pitching across the board has been better as the Warbirds rank fifth in both team ERA (4.35) and strikeouts (398) but they have given up a league-high 39 homers, with 24 hit in the cozy confines of Wilson Ballpark.

As I detailed in the Nashville section of Saturday’s Link Report, RHP Joshua Quezada made the most of his Wilson-to-Nashville excursion. He’s been rewarded with a return assignment to Wilson to rejoin the Warbirds with a few stories to tell, surely. It’d be cool if he joined the Sounds on their flight to Durham prior to making the redirect to Wilson in the Raleigh area.

What an adventure and thrill it must have been for just-turned 22-year Nicaraguan native Joshua Quezada to board that flight from North Carolina to Tennessee. The blow-out conditions and Stallings' 6.2 inning effort allowed Quezada to enter seamlessly, and the kid retired all four men he faced, registering a AAA strikeout as well. Awesome. Like called-up Peter Strzelecki, it's not hard to envision former big-leaguer J.B. Bukauskas getting a similar reward later this MLB season, but he'll need to provide both results and good health. Shortstop Brady Ebel with a double among his three hits, adding to the prospect luster in the system Saturday. Handelfry Encarnacion walked three times to lift his season long BB% to 17.0%. A total of six Warbirds reached base at least twice. The 4-5-6 hitters (Frederi Montero, Luis Lameda, Filippo DiTuri) each reached once and contributed an RBI apiece. So that's all nine batters contributing in significant ways, one of the prettiest offensive box scores we've seen across any level of the system this season. ***Here's a tip that we should have been taking advantage of previously within our reports. Having heard Sweet on the state of his pitching staff, none of us, including those in the Brewers front office, should be surprised that position player Ethan Murray ended up with a night to remember. One video not included in the game summary shows us how Murray's scoreless frame ended: Each team scored once in the 10th inning, and we'll give Freddy Zamora his video props for tying the game with none out in that 10th. Tyler Black's grounder moved Zamora to third base, but Pratt fanned in a big spot for the second out, and Brock Wilken grounded out to send things to the 11th. So, we congratulate Pratt on his two extra-base knocks, but without that strikeout, Murray would not have had the night to remember for the rest of not only his pro career, but his life. I went to the game archive video to try and learn why Sweet pulled starter Tate Kuehner so early. Kuehner allowed one run in the 1st, as an opening double would come around on a sacrifice fly. OK, no big deal. Kuehner retired the first two men in the 2nd, but it took 13 pitches to do so, then it was walk, stolen base, RBI single, HBP, walk. The bases were thus loaded, still two down, but Kuehner was at 36 pitches for the inning, the last six of those pitches all out of the zone. The video confirmed Kuehner's exit was not injury-related, as Easton McGee was not awarded extra warm-up time. The parade of arms thus began, and we can't wait to hear Sweet talk about this in this coming Sunday's pre-game chat. Oh yeah, in addition to making that catch, Luis Lara reached base four times (two singles, two walks) and now sports a .344/.456/.523 line (.979 OPS). He doesn't turn 22 until November. Incredible. Might as well start discussing things with ghost runner implications. Neither team scored in the 10th in this Biloxi road contest. Jesus Made did double earlier in the game but was only 1-for-5 on the night when the Biscuits chose to intentionally walk him to open the 10th, joining speedster Dylan O'Rae on the basepaths. Blake Burke lined out to right, moving O'Rae to 3rd. Like Cooper Pratt in the Nashville game, an otherwise strong bat in Damon Keith then struck out in a big spot. Mike Boeve flied to center to close the chance. Bottom of the 10th, southpaw Mark Manfredi, Sr. remained in the game for his second inning of work. Old friend Jadher Areinamo sacrificed the ghost runner to 3rd base, but Manfredi struck out a RH bat for the huge 2nd out, walked another RH bat, and then: That set up: What a night for Mark Coley II, the newcomer as of mid-April after his release by the Marlins. Also, what a relief for Coley who had only one base hit in his last 28 at-bats (six walks) prior to Friday. Starting RHP Brett Wichrowski's 2026 game log and now 1.60 WHIP reflect plenty of traffic, and on Friday, he allowed six hits (including a home run and double), walked three and hit a batter. But the damage was limited for the most part, and the 23-year-old gave Manager Mike Guerrero 5.2 innings on 88 pitches, fanning seven. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes (download link) Final: South Bend (Cubs) 9, Wisconsin 0 Box Score and Game Log Via the Timber Rattlers, game details: South Bend’s Fast Start Slows Rattlers Just eleven pitches into RH starter Travis Smith's night, it was 4-0. As the game summary noted, Smith settled down nicely, but if you had a friend or family member who was delayed and didn't arrive at the ballpark until the 7th inning Thursday but came back Friday night, then that friend just watched four innings of a 23-0 whitewash, though we'll note six of those tallies with a position player on the mound. There was some defensive kudos thrown Juan Baez' way in that highlight package. Baez has seen a ton of action given Luis Pena's absence, hasn't taken advantage at the plate, but playing time is playing time. Andrew Fischer reached by HBP but was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. It was the 15th time in 31 games played this season where Fischer has struck out at least twice. In seven of those 15 games, he has K'd at least three times. The incredible .574 SLG and duly noted swagger will only overcome so much of that issue as the ladder is climbed. Wilson Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Wilson 5, Hill City (Guardians) 1 Box Score and Game Log Pitching Powers Wilson Past Hill City - Walther Home Run Secures Victory Respectable attendance in the new ballpark, they saw a quick one to get to the postgame fireworks - T: 2:09. Att: 2,755. That game summary did a nice job spotlighting the only two arms Manager Eddy Morgan would need on this night. Southpaw Enderson Mercado only turned 19 years old in March. It's too bad the offensive output came one inning too late to get Mercado his first win since 2024 in the Dominican Summer League. He has an 0-9 record since, but clearly the Brewers are looking way past (as should we) that mostly meaningless mark. From the start of his pro career, the organization has given Mercado opportunities to start, and Friday was a wonderful showing for the Venezuelan native. Like recently-promoted-to-Wisconsin RHP Garrett Hodges, 23-year-old RHP Tanner Perry is deserving of his own bump. Fun fact: Perry's dad Pat Perry had a nice big-league career, a southpaw 1978 2nd round pick of the Astros, with 182 relief appearances over six seasons, seeing action with the Cardinals (he had been released by Houston), then Reds, Cubs and Dodgers. The José Anderson and Yannic Walther blasts: Not sure if Anderson can match Wisconsin's Andrew Fischer in confidence (we'll let Anderson's teammate Handelfry Encarnacion wear that mantle), but the power vs. strikeout profile is there. Two more K's here, and Anderson, who will play at age 19 all season, is at a 43.7% K rate. It stinks to note this on the night of a big Warbird win, but since he only sees sporadic action (no doubt contributing to his troubles), OF Nick Monile is now 1-for-39 in his pro career. As my fellow Link Reporter Daniel has pointed out on our forum, Monile, an undrafted signing, hit .340 with 84 walks and 42 Ks in his last two college seasons (at Niagara and North Florida) to catch the Brewers' eyes. Now, Monile has walked in 20.4% of his 49 plate appearances with Wilson, but I had to locate that lone hit. A scorching line drive, perhaps? (It's likely a few of those have been caught this season). No, it was a bunt single pushed to 3rd base that contributed to a two-run rally within a 5-3 victory back on April 19th. Final: ACL Guardians 17, ACL Brewers 8 Box Score and Game Log The A-Crew fell into a 7-0 hole after just an inning and a half but then scored seven runs of their own in the bottom of the 2nd, highlighted by a Malachai Halterman two-run double and a three-run home run off the bat of left fielder Kenny Fenelon. It was only the 5th game played for Halterman, who was the designated hitter. Continuing a theme for the night, Fenelon's blast was his lone hit and despite impressive season slug (.485), he struck out three times (41.4 K rate), though that sample is small here in 2026. Soon-to-be 19-year-old RHP Hayden Vucinovich's first career start (2nd appearance) did not go well. The 8th round draft pick out of a Minnesota high school allowed two runs in the 1st and was replaced prior to the inning ending. Under Arizona Complex League rules, Vucinovich was allowed to re-enter in the 2nd, but retired only one of the five batters he faced in that frame, with his night ending on his own throwing error handling a throw from the outfield. You would think one of the eight Maryvale pitchers to see action would have a line to be a bit proud of, but that's not the case, as your box score review will indicate. There were six Brewers errors, though only two of the 17 runs allowed were unearned. Brewer pitchers walked 17 and plunked two. The lone attempted Maryvale stolen base attempt failed. Given his power bat, we hope Jonathan Rangel can stick at catcher, though he had two passed balls Friday, giving him nine in 16 pro games behind the plate, and Guardian baserunners stole ten bases in 11 tries. Tough night... The Maryvale boys need to shake that contest off quickly, as there is a day game Saturday. The Timber Rattlers front office loves scheduling their Saturday matinees, and that's the lone day game among the full-season squads.
