  6. Sunday 5/4: Latest Milwaukee Tailgate Podcast - "Steve filled in for an ailing Jaymes this week to discuss an all-Chicago week of Brewers baseball, some more Murphy managerial aggression, why hitting coaches matter and how the NL Central is shaping up at this point." Via the Journal Sentinel Podcast: "The Brewers went 3-3 vs. the two Chicago teams but looked like they misplaced their edge, as manager Pat Murphy put it. The Cubs, right now, are clearly the better team; how can the Brewers narrow the gap? Journal Sentinel reporter Curt Hogg and host JR Radcliffe break it all down. Another great showing from Freddy Peralta, a litany of starting pitchers on the road to return, very rough showings from Tobias Myers and Quinn Priester and a demotion after a blowup outing for reliever Craig Yoho. Can the offensive struggles simply be alleviated by Christian Yelich and William Contreras turning a corner? What's up with Trevor Megill? In Three Up Three Down (43:30), Tyrese Haliburton is mad about a first pitch, Megill celebrates a great catch with an even better dance and the Shane Smith Revenge Game goes Milwaukee's way. In Remembrew When (1:02:15), it's May Day with a father/son twist and in Curt Blanche (1:07:30), something is missing from the AmFam experience. Then, JR is joined by Daz Cameron (1:17:15), who had a nice day Sunday. They talk of course about his former Brewers father, the 2008 season, a home run on his father's jersey retirement day, getting traded for Justin Verlander and his fresh start with the Brewers." Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic Transactions: - RHP Elvin Rodriguez recalled from Triple-A Nashville - RHP Craig Yoho optioned to Triple-A Nashville - RHP Manuel Rodriguez placed on High-A Wisconsin’s 7-day injured list retroactive to May 1, 2025 - INF Luis Pena activated from Low-A Carolina’s 7-day injured list Final: Nashville 3, Gwinnett (Braves) 1, game called with one out in the top of the 9th in Gwinnett, rain Box Score and Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Misiorowski's Quality Start Helps Sounds Win Rain-Shortened Contest - Sounds Earn Third Series Win of the Season Check out Jacob Misiorowski's reaction upon his final K of the night, stranding men on 2nd and 3rd in the 5th (he would toss a scoreless 6th as well) - Regarding Misiorowski's nine baserunners - five singles, four walks - this comment via BrewerFanatic's Spencer Michaelis - "As great as the last few starts were for Miz, it’s good to see him battle through some command issues and still have a good start. Gotta be able to get the job done with your A, B and C stuff" They're not the most exciting three video highlights of the season by any means, but for this low-scoring affair, the Sounds' "X" feed does provide additional action via the Stripers' call you'll wish to view. It's annoying that 1B Ernesto Martinez and his .875 OPS through 18 games last played on April 22nd, sidelined by a non-IL list thumb injury (unless something else has cropped up since that initial report). Not many would guess that 2B/C Anthony Seigler is currently 2nd on the team to Martinez with an .805 mark. Seigler was on base three times in this game as the designated hitter, including the key RBI single linked to above. Seigler stole two bases (seven on the season), though he also was picked off once. Andruw Monasterio played third base as Oliver Dunn received his as promised by Manager Rick Sweet 1-to-2 games a week at shortstop. Monasterio, batting leadoff, doubled, walked, and stole a base, also his 7th on the season. He's contributing on most nights. 31-year-old LHP Tyler Jay has taken his share of online grief mentions, none necessarily his doing, due to his on-and-off 40-man roster status during the offseason and the implications that may have had, even if indirectly. It's been pointed out that even with Jay's inclusion on the 40-man at the time, there was an additional open spot for RHP Shane Smith when Rule 5 protection decisions were made. But upon Jay's subsequent removal from that protection, he became the focal point of any consternation with the front office. Regardless, one can't argue with Jay's effectiveness to this point of the season. Biloxi Pre-Game Media Notes Final: Biloxi 8, Columbus (Braves) 5 Box Score and Game Log Via the Shuckers' website, game details - 7-Run 8th Inning Lifts Shuckers to Wild Comeback Win - Four Shuckers record multi-hit nights, Murray caps off comeback with three-run homer Here's how the boys capped off the comeback you just read about - Via our forum poster @sveumrules in our "as it happens" thread - With the 2B and HR tonight Brock Wilken’s season tally is up to seven singles, six doubles, and four home runs. With two more bases on ball tonight he’s up to 32 BB / 30 K on the season. Batting average, shmatting average, right? Wilken's line is now a .205/.441/.422 jigsaw puzzle that looks intriguing (.863 OPS) when completed, yet you can't quite figure out how it was able to be assembled. We'll let the old-school purists try to avoid being baffled. Outside of closer Justin Yeager (why is he still not yet in Triple-A in his final season of team control?), none of the Shuckers pitchers called upon here impressed, as evidenced by the 11 free passes issued (and this Tate Kuehner fielding mishap). Tyler Bryant did strand three inherited runners upon his entry, which proved to be huge in the end. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes (download link) Final: West Michigan (Tigers) 1, Wisconsin 0 Box Score and Game Log Whitecaps Outduel Rattlers in 1-0 Decision - Hardin strikes out nine over seven scoreless as Wisconsin’s starting pitcher Initially, we had to ask, "How did the Wisconsin social team manage to get four minutes and 36 seconds of highlights for this game?" - Then we realize you just include all nine Tyson Hardin strikeout pitches - be sure to read that Curt Hogg tweet embedded in the linked game summary above. Then find time to listen to Hardin as part of the easily digestible 11-minute podcast this AM to hear from the man himself: It seems so far off (kind of is as we all yearn for immediate big-league assistance), but this is why we follow the minors so closely, allowing us to dream big on Bishop Letson and Hardin becoming the 2021 Corbin Burnes and Brandon Woodruff combo in what, 2030? Now that's a hopeful outcome to the extreme, but it explains why prospect followers glean joy and passion in the process, and why fans in Appleton may very well remember sitting in the 45-50 degree stands on an early May weekend in 2025 and appreciating the memories. Jadher Areinamo singled twice and walked, now with a shiny .293/.372/.475 line that surpasses his 2024 superlative work. While he did commit a throwing error, it was his first miscue of the season, having played 13 games at shortstop (including this contest), 11 at second base, and one at third base. Remind us again why Areinamo's repeating High-A? You can darn-near guarantee that whenever Cooper Pratt departs Biloxi, Areinamo gets bumped up on the same day. Final: Carolina 4, Myrtle Beach (Cubs) 3 Box Score and Game Log Mudcats Secure Walk-Off Win Over Myrtle Beach Having come up one run short after scoring four 9th inning runs Friday night, this amazing Mudcats crew knew the task entering the final frame down by a less daunting one run on Saturday, and that's the thing about this team, is that even in the forum live thread, there was a sense of "oh, they got this". Yet this time, it was not Jesus Made, Luis Pena, and Braylon Payne in the final inning, it was going to have to be the latter half of the order getting the job done. LF Luis Lameda, in just his 4th game at the full-season level, would be the walkoff hero, with Demetrio Nadal and Reece Walling setting the table. Love to see the listed attendance of 4,023, best I can tell fireworks were Friday, not Saturday, as this final version of the Mudcats is giving Zebulon quite the season-long sendoff. These players deserve the attention they are getting. As was mentioned in our forum discussion by my Link Report partner-in-crime "Ro": "John Holobetz goes a whopping 92 pitches over 5.1 innings of relief (2 R) for Carolina. I can’t imagine he’ll be in Low-A much longer." 20-year-old southpaw Bjorn Johnson kept it close late and netted his first professional win. 18-year-old shortstop Luis Pena missed the minimum on the IL with a mild right hamstring strain, returning for this game. How mild was it? Pena was successful on all three of his stolen base attempts, now 15-for-17 on the season (and 54-for-60 in his 58-game pro career). Stud! Just invite any of your friends mired in the current big-league malaise to our Link Reports, it'll take a patient perspective, but it may brighten their day. We often state how we focus on the positive within each report best we can, but in 2025, all we have to do for the most part is just comment on what is happening on the field. There is very little "negative" to weed out most days. Final: ACL Brewers 7, ACL White Sox 6, seven innings as scheduled Box Score and Game Log First of all, it was 85 degrees and sunny - part of the reason the Arizona Complex League season has an earlier start date this year and last, to avoid most of the triple-digit days upcoming. So why are we playing seven-inning games? This game was the only one of seven Arizona games to not play nine innings. In Florida, five of seven games went nine. There are 13 position players on the ACL Brewers roster, 14 when you add rehabbing Mike Boeve (such a pleasant sight, by the way!). There are 16 active pitchers, and it's 18 when you include rehabbers DL Hall and Tanner Shears, both who saw action here. As is always the case, the league takes Sundays off. So, who asked for seven innings, the Crew? The White Sox? The umpires? C'mon, guys... Mike Boeve in the DH spot - line drive single to right, walk, line drive single to right. To quote the Talking Heads, "Same as It Ever Was". Welcome back, Mike, we missed you. Your box score review will tell you how Hall and Shears performed - Shears underwent Tommy John surgery in March of 2024, congrats on getting back to an official mound for the 25-year-old (26 next month). The only position player in the starting lineup not making his stateside debut was 19-year-old first baseman Gery Holguin, .692 OPS in 49 ACL games last summer. Holguin split those games between right field and first base and is miscast as a first baseman. That's not uncommon at the complex level, how many of these teenage athletes are earmarked for that power lumbering position so early on? So, you'll see various bodies rotate at the position here and in the Dominican Summer League. We'll note the five position players who will have to wait until Monday to debut: Catcher Luis Corobo, who just turned 18 years old this week Infielder Kevin Ereu, soon-to-be 19-years-old and the top bonus baby of the January 2023 international class Outfielder Pedro Ibarguen, repeating Maryvale, but still only 18 years old Catcher Freider Rojas, 19 years old Second baseman Jadyn Fielder, 20, Prince's son (Adam McCalvy feature article) and the only U.S. born position player on the squad Not a shock that second baseman Juan Ortuno got the start, and bombed the first-inning grand slam pulled to left field. He was a bit lost in the Jesus Made - Luis Pena hype last summer, but Ortuno only turned 18 years old last month, and his 2024 DSL line of .344/.464/.481 (.945 OPS, 29 BB to 27 K's, 22 SB in 27 attempts) was just as impressive as his more heralded running mates. Venezuelan native Enderson Mercado only turned 18 in March, and he's interesting as a pitcher who saw his share of starts in the DSL in 2024. Along with Jose Meneses, who is repeating the level, Mercado is the only other healthy southpaw on the team. Mercado pitched the final three innings here, was touched a bit, but did not walk a batter (one HBP). May the 4th be with you, as they say on this date. Early afternoon starts at all four full-season outposts, and we'll see Carlos Rodriguez and KC Hunt among the starters. Take care, everyone. Image courtesy of BrewerFanatic Transactions: - LHP DL Hall sent on rehab assignment to ACL Brewers - 3B Mike Boeve sent on rehab assignment to ACL Brewers - RHP Tanner Shears sent on rehab assignment to ACL Brewers - LHP Russell Smith placed on the ACL Brewers 7-day injured list. We also learned, via Curt Hogg of the Journal-Sentinel, that Carolina Mudcats infielder Luis Pena's 7-day IL stint is for a mild right hamstring strain. Final: Nashville 4, Gwinnett (Braves) 1 Box Score and Game Log Via the Sounds’ website, game details, and we encourage readers to review affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Logan Henderson Spins Another Quality Start in Sounds Win over Gwinnett - Second Straight Quality Start with Nashville, Third Consecutive Overall Do you think Henderson's one big league start - six glorious innings, one run allowed, one BB, nine K, has given him supreme confidence since despite the quick demotion back to Nashville? Two starts - 12 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 14 K. Let's say what seems obvious - a swap for Quinn Priester seems like a prudent move at this point. Bryan Hudson has not walked a batter in his three one-inning scoreless outings since his arrival in Nashville, more good news to help sweeten a sour evening on the MLB front. Dunn has five hits in his last three games, and he walked twice in the game prior to that. Baby steps. Andruw Monasterio doubled, walked and stole a base. He'd be no godsend by any means, but the Vinny Capra saga has been difficult to watch despite some better (yet still fruitless) at-bats on that MLB front. Maybe we should all learn about fruit bats instead. Final: Biloxi 7, Columbus (Braves) 4 Box Score and Game Log Catch up on Biloxi Pre-Game Audio Interviews Via the Shuckers' website, game details, and we encourage readers to review affiliate write-ups as part of their Link Report routine: Rodríguez's 3 RBI Night, Fitzpatrick's Dominant Outing Leads Shuckers to Wild Win - Rodríguez smashes second home run of the year, Fitzpatrick lowers ERA to 0.69 through 13.0 innings There's a contest we haven't fully followed - and that's the nightly mentions of any of the Rodriguez' in the Brewers system (there are seven of them) vs. the Garcia's (a whopping nine). At the minimum, we're suggesting a big Family Feud matchup in Maryvale next spring training. In his second season in the Brewers system, 26-year-old Ramon Rodriguez is an interesting cat. The proud father of three, and a pro since age 17 (Dodgers draft pick, subsequent time in the Orioles' chain), he can be heard in a wonderful interview with Javik Blake via the link above. He's enjoying a hot stretch at the moment, and you can add his sacrifice fly to your box score perusal this morning. Speaking of sacrifice flies: SF: Pratt; Rodríguez, R; Vargas; Warren. The most sacrifice flies by a team in one game in Major League Baseball (MLB) is five; the record was established by the Seattle Mariners in 1988, tied by the Colorado Rockies in 2006, and tied again by the Mariners in 2008. Back to Rodriguez, and you can find a couple of additional video highlights for the Shuckers on their "X" feed here: There weren't enough prospect rankers among you to place RHP Alexander Cornielle on BrewerFanatic's Top 20, but I know I did my part (several others voted for him as well). The flashes of brilliance we saw at Wisconsin have turned into a beacon of brightness (and a spiffy 0.42 ERA) through his first five starts at the AA level. Wisconsin Pre-Game Media Notes (download link) Final: Wisconsin 6, West Michigan (Tigers) 1 Box Score and Game Log Letson Ks Nine as Wisconsin Beats West Michigan - Rattlers jump to early lead with four runs in first inning Enjoy reading the summary, watching the highlights (see the "frosty" fans huddle in their coats as we hear Chris Mehring mention "Frosty K's" often - I'm sure we won't tire of that by season's end, good job by the Wendy's name brand placement team), and then listen to the podcast. Importantly, we learn that Juan Baez's HBP exit - hit his helmet - was precautionary in nature. The Timber Rattlers have only one bench body who is a non-catcher, as the organization continues to skate on thin roster ice at various levels from time to time. Going into the evening, we saw a sterling list of planned starters in Henderson, Cornielle, Letson, and we didn't sleep on 18-year-old Melvin Hernandez in Carolina. No one disappointed and just add Letson to the list of upper-Midwest Ginger Poulson draft finds. Blake Burke trips around the bases after a home run are just mesmerizing. It's just a body type that is so unlike 99% (unscientific estimate) of those we see on a daily basis. It works for him, and we're all here for it. Final: Myrtle Beach (Cubs) 7, Carolina 6 Box Score and Game Log Mudcats Rally Comes Up Short Oh, those Cubs on this Friday night. It's a shame that the 9th inning went awry for 19-year-old RHP Bryan Rivera, because the Nicaraguan native had tossed three innings of one-run ball prior. That led to the Mudcats being down 7-2 entering the bottom of the frame, and the rally fell one Eric Bitonti fly ball to center field short. Three hits including a double and a sacrifice fly here, so May is off to a fine start for Adam as well (oh hi, Ginger!). 18-year-old Braylon Payne was on base three times and is now 14-for-16 in SB attempts. That "surprise" draft pick status continues to reflect very well on Brewers brass. The previously alluded to Melvin Hernandez did not walk a batter in his 4.2 innings, and the youngest pitcher in all of full-season ball continues to acquit himself well. What's that, you say? You'll be able to see a box score and game log from Maryvale today starting at 1:00 Central? Darn right, and best wishes to the Arizona Complex League kids (roster and staff listed here). 15. Transactions: - LHP DL Hall sent on rehab assignment to ACL Brewers - 3B Mike Boeve sent on rehab assignment to ACL Brewers - RHP Tanner Shears sent on rehab assignment to ACL Brewers - LHP Russell Smith placed on the ACL Brewers 7-day injured list.
