Sept. 13: OF Mark Canha undergoes MRI on wrist
Canha left Tuesday's game against the Marlins with a sore left wrist and underwent an MRI on Wednesday morning that revealed no structural damage. He received a cortisone shot and will have to let that work for several days before picking up a bat again on Friday. Based on past flare-ups of the same wrist, Canha said he doesn't anticipate a lengthy absence.
With Canha down, the Brewers were missing a pair of outfielders, since Christian Yelich remained sidelined by a stiff -- but rapidly improving -- lower back. Yelich went through a pregame routine of running and hitting on Wednesday and was nearing a comeback, manager Craig Counsell said.
Sept. 12: OF Blake Perkins, 1B Darin Ruf, OF Jesse Winker begin rehab assignments at Triple-A Nashville
There were 20 days remaining in the regular season as of Tuesday, which explains the timing of the start of 20-day rehab assignments for a trio of players on the injured list, each of whom could be an emergency option in a potential postseason situation, should they be needed.
Sept. 11: OF Garrett Mitchell nearing game action, pending clearance
The Brewers remain hopeful that the speedy center fielder could contribute before the end of the season as Mitchell continues his comeback from left shoulder surgery in May. Mitchell has a doctor's appointment scheduled for Thursday or Friday, manager Craig Counsell said, at which time the club expects him to receive clearance to begin playing games at Triple-A Nashville. The Sounds' regular season runs through Sept. 24, one week before the end of the Major League regular season.
"We’re very likely to, we’re hopeful, of getting a ‘start playing’ that day," Counsell said. "If he gets a thumbs up, the final clearance, he's obviously already doing a lot, taking live at-bats, running around, so if he gets the game action clearance, he would start at Nashville [the next day]. ...
"Garrett is coming back from a serious injury. What I’m encouraged by is he’s going to get 10 or so days of possible game action. There will be some days off in there, obviously. But the more he can play, the more he’s going to learn about, ‘Am I good? Is this still affecting me?’ The game will tell him that. We’ve certainly got to clear that first and see how that goes.’
