1. Double steal attempts with 2 on and 1 out. Leaving Jenkins in TWICE to face bullpen lefties in a close game. Seriously, is this pea-brain trying to lose? I can't wait until the day after the season ends. I'm going to take off of work just so I can enjoy spending the day watching him get fired.
2. Double steal doesn't work? Jenkins K's against a lefty? What a shocker!! Seriously, get this bird-brain out of the dugout. He's embarassing himself. Ned Yost: Killing rallies in a major way since 2003.
3. I took Advertising in American Society with the same professor that you have. It was a pretty fun course, and not terribly difficult from what I remember. Man, that seems like a long time ago. I feel old. http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/wink.gif
4. Bingo. Great post, jeffyscott. I would love to see more managers with the courage to go against the managerial formula that has become so ingrained in baseball. They would probably risk getting torn apart by sports media pundits (like Tom Haudricourt and especially Joe Morgan) who believe traditional baseball "knowledge" is the be all and end all. Also, as long as managerial positions are reserved almost exclusively for ex-players, things aren't likely to change. They learned about baseball in a certain way, and will always think of it in those terms. Some of them seem to think that the intellectual/SABR approach to baseball is just for nerds who don't really understand "The Game." Lots of old school guys still think the Billy Beane way of examining baseball is some sort of an abomination.
5. Why the heck are you reading the "Ned Yost: Yay or Nay" thread, if ongoing debate about Ned Yost bothers you so much? The thread actually dimishishes your excitement for the pennant race, and yet here you are reading and posting in it. You must be a glutton for punishment. 74-71 (49-58 since May 15th, 29-45 in road games) and second place in a crappy division is success? You'll have to excuse me if that kind of success by Yost and the Brewers doesn't exactly knock my socks off.

7. If Yost does something one way he gets blamed for the loss. He makes the move the other way the next time and still gets blamed. I don't see how the Turnbow thing classifies as "the other way" from the Aquino thing. You're implying that the two moves are somehow intertwined, and in reality, they aren't. Are you saying that if Yost makes two totally unrelated decisions, 10 days apart, that fans can only criticize one or they're somehow being unfair? Isn't it possible that his handling of both situations was poor? They're not mutually exclusive.
8. I must be missing something. Care to explain the correlation between the two situations (other than the fact that they were questioned by fans)?
9. I don't know if that's worse. More like equal. And it's easier to give a guy a break when he's been managing in the majors for 5 weeks. When it's 5 years, this kind of crap becomes much more intolerable. Anyway, I've got a solution. How about no former Brewer players manage the team next year.
10. I just heard Britney's new song. It sucked. And how can you make a "comeback" when you've been the #1 entertainment news/paparazzi target for the past year?
11. Actually, Hall's OPS this year is lower than Weeks'. Hall has a .758 OPS, Weeks has a .777 OPS. So, that poster has a point. Hall deserves as much wrath for this season's performance as Weeks. Personally, I've cut Hall some slack because he was so good the last two seasons. Up until two weeks ago, Rickie Weeks hadn't really done anything in his major league career but get hurt and make errors. For what Hall contributed the past two seasons, I'm more willing to put up with his down period. How do you figure? Below is a comparison of 2006 Hall and 2007 Hall. Seems like his number have dipped big-time, all the way across the board. Not just HR totals. AVG OBP SLG OPS Hall 'o6 .270 .345 .553 .898 Hall '07 .260 .320 .438 .758
12. I think Johnny Estrada participated in the "Mr. Universe" contest. Ned Yost was cut from his high school's "Stratego" team.
13. Couldn't agree more. If Villanueva gets sent back to the bullpen in favor of Vargas at any point the rest of the season, I will be a very sad young man.
14. If his wrist was causing him to play that badly for that long, then he probably should have been on the DL to start the year. I think the theory that he fell into some bad habits while hurt probably has more merit. His defense still needs lots of improvement too. I still hold out hope that he will be a very good player someday, but it's going to take more than two weeks of good hitting to convince me he is "there." You certainly could have fooled me.
15. Were people not supposed to be down on him? Because he eventually started hitting now in September, are people supposed to be retro-actively satisfied with the .685 OPS he posted from April through Mid-August? Again, I fail to see the point of your thread. It seems like you are telling people they were wrong to ever be down on him, and I don't see how you have a leg to stand on with that argument. Rickie flat out stunk, the stats prove it, and people who were disappointed were more than justified.
16. What the heck is your point? People were disappointed when he was playing terrible for 3/4 of the season. Most of those people figured he'd get better, but were still disappointed that he was playing so poorly. Then, like we all knew (your words), he snapped out of it. He's been playing better lately, but that doesn't make being disappointed or unsatisfied with his earlier play wrong. He sucked. I fail to see how him hitting well now proves everybody who pointed out his prior suckiness "wrong." Of the 80% you mentioned, find me a single post that claims Weeks was alway going to suck and never get any better. You probably won't find one, so I don't understand the "I told you so" nature of your post.
17. Remembering that Brett Favre is totally old. Finding out that James Jones isn't really the second coming of Sterling Sharpe. Watching the Brewers play a road game, which is sure to be a positive experience.
18. A swarm of angry bees made Ned use Aquino the other day. A deer tick threatened to give Ned lyme disease if he didn't bat Estrada 5th for half the season. Mench was left in to bat against Dempster and the Cubs because an army of fire ants didn't like Jenkins in that situation.
19. There is a realistic chance we could join the Orioles as the only teams this season to: 1. Get no-hit in a game and 2. Give up 30 runs in one game That would be some exclusive company. I have confidence the Brewers can do it. You gotta believe...
20. Actually, they've pretty much been crap their whole careers. McClung too. Apparently, sucking for your entire career makes you ready for prime time during a playoff chase, but being temporarily shaken up after beaning a guy in the head is totally unforgivable and sends you straight to the end of the bench.
21. I'm getting really sick of seeing Matt Wise get treated like a worthless piece of garbage. He's been a very good pitcher (over a good sized span of time) for the Brewers, and yet they have never shown any sustained faith in him. Now, he has a couple of bad outings after a bean-ball, and now all of the sudden the organization is treating him like he's got some kind of psychological disorder. Suddenly he's a mop-up guy, and we're relying on Spurling, Aquino, and McClung to pitch in game-changing situations. It's just ridiculous. I think Wise should get off this team as soon as possible, and latch on with a team that actually realizes and appreciates the fact that he's better than the aforementioned garbage we're trotting out there now.
22. You still haven't really answered my question. I know you think spirit, unity, and a good clubhouse help win games. Just re-stating it doesn't really qualify as tangible evidence or reasoning. How and why do these things help a baseball team win more games? I would really like just one solid reason that shows some type of direct correlation between a good clubhouse and winning baseball games. There's countless studies, data, and facts that show baseball-related decisions have a direct impact on wins and losses, so I'll take sound strategy and logic over clubhouse unity anyday as a means to increase my team's chances of winning. Hey, if you don't have leg to stand on in the debate, just begin name calling and ad hominem responses. Nice.
23. I guess I still fail to see how anybody figures that kind of stuff is going to translate into more wins. It might make Braun a nicer, more likeable guy, but I don't really see how it would improve him as a baseball player. I hear so much stuff like "he's a players' manager!" or "he's a great clubhouse leader!" First, I don't really understand how anybody can know that. Have you been down in the clubhouse, gauging the teams' spirits and respect for Ned? Are you in any position to judge how much better or worse of a clubhouse guy Yost is than other managers around the league? Probably not. And even if it is true that he's such a solid leader, what makes everybody so sure that it is making the Brewers a more successful on-the-field baseball team? If anybody could offer up some tangible evidence, I'm more than willing to listen.
24. That's true...because Yost probably would have been fired in April or May if the team had started the season 9-21 or whatever. He's actually lucky that all of the horrific baseball came after the 24-10 start. That hot start probably saved his job, because it has held the team's overall record near .500 all season long.
25. http://i.esmas.com/image/0/000/003/817/tavarez_N.jpg Julian Tavarez. I could never stand that guy.
