  1. Is it just me, or have we lost A LOT more games like this than we've won?
  2. http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/3190/hughespz5.jpg http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/7966/hulsejn0.jpg http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/1984/estradapl2.jpg http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/1871/graphxd0.jpg
  3. That's why I think it was wise to only use him if that situation came up. I guess I don't see what the difference is. An inning is an inning. If he pitches the 12th instead of the 13th, it shouldn't make any difference. I understand what you're saying though, that if you used the ace reliever in all "high leverage" situations, he would get used too much because almost every game has a high leverage situation, but not necessarily a save situation. At that point, it'd be up to the manager's discretion to not overuse the pitcher. On second thought, I'm not sure Ned could be trusted to do that. Maybe it is better that he has an automatic time to use Cordero, which will self-regulate his use.
  4. It's not nonsensical since you can't run your closer out every night as I pointed out...Giving him a night off wasn't as dumb as you are making it out to be. That's a completely different issue. If he was being rested, and wasn't going to be used no matter what the game situation was, that's totally different. That's not what we're discussing though. We're talking about what the proper action is, assuming the pitcher is available. Either way, I'd be willing to bet if a save situation had come along, Cordero would've been in there.
  5. The truth of the matter is, if you do end up scoring in the top of the next inning, you will still have to pitch a scrub the inning afterward. So there is really little difference. If a scrub gives up 1 run when you're tied on the road, you lose. If a scrub gives up 1 run when you have a lead, you're *at worst* tied (could possibly still have the lead if you scored multiple runs). So, there is a difference. A big difference. You want to give the scrub more wiggle room, and use your best reliever in tighter situations. Plus, prioritizing Point B (save situation) over Point A (current situation) is non-sensical, since Point B doesn't exist without getting past Point A.
  6. For the record, I'm not blaming Yost for the loss. I can disagree with his managing without necessarily thinking he is the reason we lost. Obviously, there were many other factors. Namely, Johnny Estrada and the rest of the pathetic offensive attack.
  7. If we score we have Cordero for the win. But Ned didn't give us a good chance to even make it to the 13 for a chance to score. I just don't understand this type of logic. People are overly concerned about what might happen when reaching point B, when point B doesn't even exist without getting past point A.
  8. Again, good in theory, but what makes you think they are going to even score A run? Maybe they wouldn't have, but wouldn't you at least liked to have had a chance to?
  9. Can you blame Ned for not sticking with Wise vs. Dunn, thus enabling Rickie to pinch hit for Wise and enabling Shouse to pitch the entire 13th? No. Bringing in Shouse there was smart. We needed to get Dunn out there. No messing around. I wouldn't have wanted Shouse to pitch the entire 13th anyway, as that's not his strong suit. Getting out one tough lefty is his strong suit. That was well played by Ned.
  10. And Balfour sucked tonight....again. Exactly why he shouldn't have been used in such a high leverage situation. That's what your top-notch relievers are for.
  11. In theory, yes you pull him. But you can't warm somebody up in 20 seconds. You're also not planning on getting someone up to warm up when Balfour goes in Or, you just use Cordero to start that inning, since Balfour is a struggling recent call-up. He should be used for mop-up duty, not extra inning tie games. And you worry about "save situations" later, if they come up. Maybe the Brewers score 2,3, or 4 runs. Then, somebody like Balfour has a much nicer cushion to work with than he does in a tie game.
  12. 90% or more of managers in baseball don't use Coco there either Does that make it right, in your opinion?
  13. Get a clue, you don't go to Coco in that situation. Give Ned a rest tonight. You're right. I'm so relieved that Cordero is still available to pitch in the imaginary 13th inning that never happened. What was I thinking?!
  14. Yuck. Sometimes, Ned Yost just makes me sick. I'm soooooo sick of these restrictions for using Cordero in road games. BOOOOOO. http://iamagreat.com/artomelette/wp-content/uploads/2007/03/barf.jpg
  15. To be fair, Jenkins had 2 strikes on him, and did what he needed to do to keep the inning alive. You need to be able to rely on the guy hitting behind you. It's not Jenkins fault that Mench can't hit RHP, and it's not something he can afford to concern himself with.
  16. 1. Don't care 2. Not JJ Hardy 3. Don't care 4. Don't care 5. Not Johnny Estrada 6. Don't care 7. Don't care 8. Don't care 9. Pitcher
  17. Which is too bad, because he managed a heck of a game tonight. With Hardy batting 2nd, and Estrada 5th, "managing a heck of a game" was off the table before the game even started. Does Yost realize how low Hardy's OBP is since the middle of May? It's .288. Estrada's is .280 since mid-May, even more pathetic. How do you keep batting guys like that batting #2 and #5?
  18. If you are a potential playoff team who let's Johnny Estrada bat 5th, you're getting exactly what you deserve when something like that happens. Seriously, I can't believe Hardy is still batting 2nd and Estrada 5th.
  19. you want to just trade the guy for something "better" in Dunn. Why do you have better in quotations? Are you actually trying to imply that Dunn isn't that much better than Jenkins? Jenkins OPS since May 15th is .680, and that's with the benefit of almost exclusively facing RHP. That's not really cutting it for a corner outfielder on a team that hopes to make the playoffs. Dunn's OPS during the same timeframe is .863, and he is over .900 for the entire season. Comparing these two players, it's not even close. The guy has suffered for so many years on this club with all the losing and the injuries and now we're successful...Trade Jenkins at this year's deadline? No way. Give the guy the pennant race that he deserves. I understand the loyalty factor with Jenkins, but winning needs to be #1 priority, no matter what. If Jenkins would be happy sticking around as a 2-3 starts per week reserve outfielder for the rest of the year just to be on a winning team, that's fine with me. Other than that, I couldn't really care less about him. I just want the team to be as good as possible. If the Brewers can upgrade from him, it needs to happen.
  20. It's working! Cubs lose! Cubs lose! http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/7599/dogcrapcubshatzt7.jpg
  21. isn't TGJ sitting on the bench hindering his progression and he is much more important than gross is down the road. I personally think Gross has a higher ceiling than TGJ. Gwynn's skillset isn't necessarily something that needs to be developed any further. He's fast, he slaps the ball, and he plays good defense. That stuff isn't really going to improve or regress based on playing time, and he's never going to hit for any power. He's an ideal 4th or 5th outfielder. I think Gross at least has the potential to be a legit major league hitter. I just don't see that from Gwynn. His offense might improve slightly with more experience/at-bats, but I think he is what he is, and that's a player who's hitting will most likely never justify a starting spot in a major league outfield.
  22. ugh, I might be a little sick if Gross is demoted before Gwynn. Eh. Normally, I'd agree with this sentiment, but Gross wasn't really playing all that much. With Hall coming back soon, Gross would have gone back to barely any playing time at all. If we're going to have a 5th OF, who doesn't get many AB's and is used primarily as a pinch runner/defensive replacement, I actually prefer it to be Gwynn over Gross. The 5th OF spot is actually ideal for TGJ, given his skillset. Gross wasn't really serving any purpose as the team's 5th OF, and rotting on the bench was hindering his progression as a hitter. Let him get some consistent AB's at AAA, and let Gwynn handle the late inning/spot-start stuff.
  23. Are we sure already that Sheets won't be able to make his next start?
  24. Obviously, Sunday and Monday are the only time these young hellraisers don't go out partying all night. Monday - Tuesday: Alert, focused, ready for baseball Wednesday - Sunday: Tired, hungover, can't focus on baseball because they are thinking about the girl(s) they hooked up with the night before and whether or not they should go to the doctor to be tested for "the clap"
  25. They are hot and we are playing average on the road. Thats major league baseball, get used to it...dont expect pull way numbers the whole time. What exactly is it that people don't understand about the vent thread? Posters are supposed to be able to come here to vent their frustrations (founded, unfounded, whatever) without having somebody telling them they're wrong to be frustrated. This is supposed to be the one thread that is a sanctuary from all of the "I'm going to tell you what your expectations of baseball should be" crap. Knock it off.
