I'm not convinced Funkhouser's arm is sound, I think the Brewers are doing just fine.

Braden Webb is a, "just plain interesting" pick. He's a draft-elgible college freshman, who's already had Tommy John surgery. He has plenty of talent, but may end up as 2-pitch bullpen guy. I like the arm, but this is a hard player to project.

It should always be, "best player available", but in light of last night's picks, I would expect the Brewers to push harder for pitching at the top of the return if Lucroy is dealt. Given the pitching depth they have at the top, this makes me like the Dodgers even more as a trade partner.

On the Oddibe McDowell stuff ..... yes, Harold said Ray looks like McDowell, but he also said, "In this day and age, when they don't make a player like that try to hit the ball on the ground ...." In that respect, Harold is right. McDowell was a great athlete, an exceptional college player and USA Olympian. Texas brought him in, and tried to make him a front of the order hitter, instead of allowing him to use his skills and become what he might become. They are not the same animal, but in this respect, think of Carlos Gomez when the Twins tried to make him a leadoff hitter - it was a flop. Carlos didn't take off until someone finally told him to go ahead and swing hard. As a physical comp, there's nothing wrong with a McDowell comparison.

If you want the guy most likely to get a pitching coach fired, Kyle Funkhouser is right there. I wouldn't argue with the pick at all if it's him, but he's as unpredictable as any "name" pitcher can get. If he'll sign, I like HS third baseman Drew Mendoza. I thought he'd be picked by now, which leads me to think it's about the money. If the Brewers want to continue to add power to the system, there's OF Heath Quinn from Samford. I would stay away from middle infielders in this round, because that crop is weak this year - nobody jumps out in this range.

With the top three picks spent on bats, you have to think the top player back in any Lucroy trade will be a pitcher. We should discuss that in the trade rumors forum, but it was worth a mention here. I'm surprised the Crew didn't take at least one pitcher, this certainly looks like an orchestrated focus on bats, you can't tell me there wasn't a pitcher who fit the bill at any of those three spots, I won't believe it.

OK, two things .... first, there's a legit power prospect .... I said PROSPECT, not sure thing. Secondly, the Brewers are clearly trying to compete sooner than later, it's college tonight, so we're not thinking five years from now with these picks.

Is it wrong of me to hope the Brewers take another outfielder, just for the reaction?

Corey Ray isn't a reach, but I thought they'd take Rutherford, and he is the player I wanted. I don't know what happened with those pitchers, but it had become obvious that they were falling over the last week or so. There are several players I wouldn't argue much about, and Ray is one of them. I wish he had more HR power, that's the one knock, and if he moves from CF, it's a legitimate concern. Ray is definitely a talent, but if he is a .280, 15 HR left fielder, the Brewers had better have unusual power someplace up the middle to compensate.

Fair enough .... but why not? The power grade isn't accurate, I HIGHLY doubt the power translates. He's hitting wall scrapers with a metal bat and he's a smaller guy so there's no projection when it comes to his power. He'll be lucky to hit 10 HRs a season in the bigs. He's more gap power than HR power. I just don't see the 55 grade that MLB.com gave him. I think it's more 40-45 and maybe a 50 at his peak (if everything goes perfect for him). I also really doubt his CF abilities. I think he's a corner outfielder more so than a CF. He's got the speed for CF but he doesn't understand the routes to the ball at the position. You certainly try him there, I just doubt he translates. He's solid and safe but he's not a top 5 talent. Whether Ray proves you to be right or wrong .... this was an excellent response. Thank you for forming an opinion, and laying it out.

Agree. So do you prefer Ray Lankford, Charlie Blackmon or Andrew McCutcheon as comp for Corey Ray? Of the three, Lankford .... Granderson is also a good comp, perhaps also Bernard Gilkey. Some of everything.

This draft has turned into an absolute jump ball .... as fluid as any MLB draft I can remember. I do believe the top two picks are going to be Moniak and Senzel, but after that, it's all interchangeable rumors. One day ago, I was certain the Brewers would not get a shot at either Puk or Lewis, now they may actually wind up with a shot at either one. My stuff ... I bet against the Rockies drafting a prep pitcher. I do not want Zack Collins as the Brewers' first pick. He's a fine prospect, but there are plenty of guys I consider to have higher ceilings. It's a top five pick ... don't play games - take the best guy, and sign him. A while ago, I posted Josh Lowe as the guy the Brewers may take as a surprise - at this point, I'm not sure it would surprise anyone. I think .... and for gosh sakes, this could change 17 more times today ..... I think, it's Rutherford to Milwaukee.

Bradley is a lefty hitter - he's a true prospect, but he's also a long ways from a sure thing. He's got the power, but will he make enough contact? I mentioned Cleveland's need for an offensive boost in the outfield, and I think that's what they'll look for first, but if they can't match up and get it, I can't believe they wouldn't at least talk about Lucroy. In my post, I left the Indians' top two prospects out of the pile - and I didn't even push Brady Aiken, while they're getting a ridiculously underpaid all-star performer at a thin position. Cleveland could do this if they want to, but I'm sure it won't be first on their list.

I said this earlier in this thread, but I can't imagine Cleveland giving Aiken up at this point. They took the chance on the injured kid, and paid him - he hasn't pitched in a pro game yet, if they give him up, and he's what he might be, that really hurts. Cleveland - Is getting nothing from their catchers, and needs offense in general. They'll look for an outfielder first, I would guess, and I would also guess their OF issues will prevent them from offering either of their top two prospects, Bradley Zimmer and Clint Frazier, because they're both outfielders - it makes sense to me that the small market team will want to keep those guys. Lucroy fits here, because he's a clear offensive upgrade, and they could fit him in without destroying their payroll. If Cleveland stays in contention, this might be a fit. Mets - D'Arnaud is clear to hit, but still hasn't been cleared to throw a ball. Does that sound like a catcher who's nearing a return to you? New York says they won't add a big contract .... ok then, Lucroy is an upgrade and affordable. The question is - do the Mets have the prospects to make the best offer? I think the Mets are on the fringe here - they'll wait for D'Arnaud for a while longer before they make a move, and in the end, I think they'll be outbid. White Sox - would be a great fit, but they have little in the farm system. Seattle - would be a great fit, but they have little in the farm system. Houston - is back in the mix, and playing much better. If they decide to pursue a catcher, they'll be a serious contender for Lucroy. Texas - same as Houston, if they decide to push for Lucroy, they can get him. Dodgers - as of today, this might be the best fit, depending on which kids they'd let go of. LA has young arms at the top of their prospect list - enough to deal from if they want to. Cubs - with the top catching prospect in the minor leagues sitting right there at AAA .... there's no reason to bet on this. If they do get in the mix, they could make a great offer. Boston - if they go for a catcher, they're a great match. They're getting little from the guys they have, and now they've lost Blake Swihart for the season. Swihart's injury not only stops them from using his bat in either left field or at catcher, but it will also stop them from trying to make him the centerpiece of a trade right now, opening up other possibilities. Does Boston go for a catcher, a left fielder, or more pitching? With Swihart down, left field is back in play - if Boston decides they want a bat, the Brewers and Red Sox could make a huge trade this summer. In a fantasy league atmosphere, Braun and Lucroy could change cities together. Do the Sox meet the price for a player like Lucroy or Julio Teheran, or do they go smaller, keeping their top prospects intact? They've got four dynamite kids at the top of their list right now, but they're also a true World Series contender. This will be fun to watch.

I know it bothers some of you, but I enjoy a draft that's wide open like this one. I'm hoping for Riley Pint or Blake Rutherford, but I'd be happy with Corey Ray too. I think a lot of you are dismissing Ray as a, "safe pick", rather than the best guy available - time will tell, but I think he's more than that. I really think it's a high school player for Milwaukee, with Moniak off the board ahead of them, and possibly Pint or Groome. If you take Perez out of the mix, that puts Rutherford right in the wheelhouse. Who knows, maybe Josh Lowe is still in the conversation too.

The White Sox play aggressively, they love fast-moving college guys, and they're never afraid to trade a prospect. Do they want the hitter or the pitcher? I'll guess on Dakota Hudson.
