  1. On Keith Law's comments... Yes, the Brewers seem to have reached for Medeiros, but everywhere you looked, he was seen as a late first/early second round selection. Yes, he may wind up in the bullpen, but come on, he's a teenager with a live arm from the left side, there's no reason to assume he can't start at this point. Yes, Gatewood has a raw hit tool, which is why he fell from a top-five choice, but he's also got the potential to be a 30-homer middle infielder in the big leagues. Yes, Harrison needs to focus on baseball and prove he can hit as he climbs the ladder, but this kid is a stud. He's not a true burner, but he can certainly run, he has a quick bat, and more than enough arm to play anywhere on the diamond. If he can make enough solid contact with the bat, he truly could become a star. He is what he should be at this point for a true athlete who didn't focus solely on baseball...ahem...this is why they have minor leagues. Did the Brewers gamble last night? Yes. For a team that has taken plenty of criticism for having a system full of #3 starters, and #6 hitters, the Brewers did exactly what they should have - they went for it. You're guessing on what three high school kids will do five to ten years from now, so of course you might be wrong, but Milwaukee took players rated as two first rounders, and at least a Competitive Balance pick last night. When you rank a team 29th in minor league talent, and they have three of the top 50 picks...isn't that exactly what they should be doing?
  2. Carlos Rodon is not a compare for any of the players the Brewers took tonight - he was taken in the 16th round, because they knew the odds were against him signing. FWIW, all three of the kids the Brewers took tonight were in attendance at the draft. I don't know if that will mean anything going forward, but they all took this seriously enough to make the trip. Medeiros and Gatewood seem as though they will sign, I would be shocked if either didn't....Harrison is the challenge. I'm sure the Brewers know what he wants, or they wouldn't have invested the pick in him, and I'll bet on them signing him, because they have too much to lose if they don't. The Brewers won't want to lose the pool money on a pick that high, and there's no way I believe they didn't know what it would take to sign him before they took him. I'll bet on them signing all three of these players. I expect a bunch of below-slot types to be drafted between now and round ten, which just intensifies the need to sign these first three guys. Even if the team goes over their allotment to get these guys, I can't imagine them leaving this talent on the table. All three of these players could bomb...things happen, but this trio of young players has the potential to make a huge impact in Milwaukee. If they all pan out, you've got a tough lefty starter, a big power bat, and an electric athlete in center field....that sells tickets, and wins games.
  3. The Brewers took three of the top thirty players available in this draft, they have to get them signed, and they know it.
  4. You're going to see college seniors in, for example, rounds 8-10, because they have no leverage, so they'll sign WAY below slot, allowing the team to sign Gatewood and Harrison. Would it be, could it be....could one of those spots go to Tyler Badamo, to really put me over the moon? Thanks, 3and2...
  5. OH MY GOD! WOW! HEY OUT THERE, jump up and down! The Brewers are CRUSHING THIS! THERE is your big-time athlete with all the upside you could hope for!
  6. I would take Monte Harrison, but that's going to be big money to buy him out of football, if not, give me Mac Marshall.
  7. MillerParkSouth....no, Medeiros does not profile as a reliever, he is a guy who may end up in the bullpen, but that's FAR from consensus. Paul 253, I don't know how that happened, but that's bad information, Medeiros hit 97 MPH at the workout in Miller Park.
  8. I have no problem with the Brewers' pick, but honestly, when I saw Newcomb was still there, I thought it would be him.
  9. Twitter is filled with, "The Cubs are about to take Schwarber" posts.
  10. Jim Callis' last mock... http://m.mlb.com/news/2014/06/05/78397820/final-mock-jim-callis-picks-for-the-first-round Jonathan Mayo's last mock... http://m.mlb.com/news/2014/06/05/78374912/final-mock-jonathan-mayos-picks-for-the-first-round
  11. "A Short Rant"...by Todd I do not want Finnegan. I don't have anything against Conforto or Zimmer, but neither has won me over, so I'll pass. I like Trea Turner, but I think he'll picked ahead of Milwaukee. Toussaint is a project, and I think the team will play this pick a little safer than that, so I'll bet against it. Hoffman would be a fun pick, but he may not reach the Brewers. I can't stand brussels sprouts, no matter how healthy they are. The Brewers won't do what I'm about to say. The Brewers should be focused on Holmes, Pentecost, and Schwarber, and taking whoever they think the best of the three is. Mark DiFelice's middle name is Andrew. I still think it's Pentecost. If the Brewers take a guy I really didn't expect them to take...it'll be Gillaspie.
  12. I absolutely think the Brewers could have drafted better during Bruce's tenure, but I also think too much of the "blame" gets put on his shoulders. The first round picks from 2006, 2007, and 2008 were all traded, then yes, the early picks in 2009 missed, and then the first-rounder from 2010 didn't sign...that's where the system really fell in the rankings. You have nothing from the first round in five years...some of that was Bruce's fault, but some was not. 2010 produced Nelson and Thornburg - there's certainly nothing wrong with that. 2011 is still incomplete, for those who hate that draft, look again at those pitchers right now, this story is far from over, there could still be some help on the way for the big club. It's incomplete, and it could end up being ugly, but that is far from certain at this point. 2012 was the only year they've really focused on bats at the top, and they've certainly got some promise there. 2013...way too soon to tell, with no first-rounder, and those first two choices being so young. In addition, the Brewers are getting contributions from Scooter Gennett, and Khris Davis, who were picked on Bruce's watch. When the team dealt out a lot of top prospects, and Bruce's first two number ones produced nothing, it surely made things look bad - but there's some talent in the system, and there are some home-grown players in Milwaukee right now who came from Bruce's drafts. Those arms from 2011, and those bats from 2012 are really going to decide whether Bruce was a hit or a miss.
  13. Chris Crawford's mock... http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2014/06/the-penultimate-mock-2/
  14. On Pentecost, here's a new ranking that was just posted, which shows him as the #12 player in this draft. Whether you believe that or not, I don't think it's fair to compare him to Lucroy at this point, because Lucroy was never considered to be anywhere near that good prior to the draft. Obviously, there's something there with Pentecost, or people like Jim Callis wouldn't consider him to be a worthy pick in the middle of round one. http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2014/06/the-final-2014-board-probably/ I've suggested Pentecost to Milwaukee, and that's where I put him in my mock draft, but he's one of several players who would be a good fit. I don't think the Brewers should take Pentecost because he is a catcher, I think they should take him because he's an excellent young player who would fill an organizational need. Schwarber is the same deal, a good prospect, who fits in the range of Milwaukee's first pick, as are several of the pitchers, and a few more hitters. Personally, I don't want them to take Conforto or Zimmer, if they take one of the arms, Pentecost, or Schwarber, I'm a happy guy. Colbyjack...do you still see Chavis as a "maybe" for the Brewers' first pick?
  15. Josh Kusnick... http://www.baseballintheblood.com/?p=1162
  16. Schwarber would be a fine pick, so would Pentecost, Trea Turner, Michael Conforto or Brad Zimmer, among hitters - on the pitching side there are as many players who would not be considered a reach if the Brewers took them. The best thing about the first pick for the Brewers is, they have abundance to choose from, if there's a downside, you just know some of these guys won't make it....with no obvious answer, the risk of missing would seem to go up.
  17. Would I have traded one high upside kid in Low-A for Kyle Lohse prior to last season? We have no idea who the Brewers would have taken, or the impact that player would, or would not, have eventually made, so going with, "what you know"...the move has absolutely worked to this point.
  18. TLB, Tyler's got both feet on the ground - much more so than I would have had at his age. Tyler's dad died when he was 17, and 13 months later, Tyler became a father...he had two ways he could have gone - grow up fast, or collapse. I'm happy to say, Tyler grew up fast.
  19. Here's what I said on my site... 1. Houston – Carlos Rodon, LHP, NC State Houston’s system is loaded, and those kids are just starting to reach the big club now. I say it’s Rodon, because he’ll move quickly, matching up with their other talent at the big league level. 2. Miami – Alex Jackson, C, Rancho Bernardo HS, CA Jackson is perceived as the best bat in the draft, I’ll send him to Miami, who will still have plenty of good arms to pick from when their second pick comes up. 3. White Sox – Brady Aiken, LHP, Cathedral Catholic HS, CA Aiken could just as easily be the first player taken, and maybe he will be. I think the White Sox will get Aiken or Rodon, and I think their scouting staff will all sleep with a smile that night. 4. Cubs – Aaron Nola, RHP, LSU – Nola doesn’t have the skills that make scouts drool, except for one – this man knows how to take the ball, and get batters out. The Cubs will grab Nola, and he’ll reach Wrigley Field in 2016. 5. Minnesota – Tyler Kolek, RHP, Shepherd HS, TX - Kolek is the opposite of Nola, Kolek can break 100 MPH, but he’s only 18, so he’ll take a little while to reach the major leagues. The Twins will be lucky to get him at five. 6. Seattle - Nick Gordon, SS, Olympia HS, FL - Seattle is perpetually searching for offense, and the next Gordon in line is their best bet to find some with the sixth pick. 7. Philadelphia - Kyle Freeland, LHP, Evansville - With the big club aging quickly, the Phillies could go with an arm or a bat to fill a need. Freeland climbed the draft board all season long, and he’s a good fit for this pick. 8. Colorado - Sean Newcomb, LHP, Hartford - The Rockies will always need to develop as much pitching internally as they can, and in this spot, Newcomb is the best bet. While others have suffered from injuries or inconsistency, Newcomb has done the job all season long. 9. Toronto – Trea Turner, SS, NC State – Turner’s stock has been up, down, and up again. He’s one of the best college bats in this class, and he plays a premium position – Toronto’s picking again at 11, which is where they’ll take an arm. 10. Mets - Bradley Zimmer, OF, San Francisco - It could be Zimmer’s fellow college outfielder, Michael Conforto, but I’m going with Zimmer. The Mets need bats, and a college bat probably makes the most sense, because they’ll want him in New York sooner than later. 11. Toronto – Touki Toussaint, RHP, Coral Springs Christian Academy HS, FL - Touki’s got velocity, athleticism, and a mix of pitches – what he doesn’t have is polish. The Blue Jays already have an advanced bat in Trea Turner, so they’ll go with a young arm with upside, Toussaint it is. 12. Milwaukee – Max Pentecost, C, Kennesaw State - A catcher, who will actually remain a catcher, who can hit too. There are several players the Brewers could go with in this spot, but I’m sending them Pentecost. Max is a fairly safe pick, but he’s also a worthy choice who could help the Brewers for years.
  20. Tyler's pre-draft workouts are done, he did four of them. By this time, the teams involved have seen him plenty, they know what he throws, his velocity, his makeup, etc - these move pretty quickly. In the four workouts, Tyler allowed one grounder through the middle, he struck out more than half of the batters he faced. Today's team loved his off-speed pitches in particular. The team questionnaires are long since filled out and returned, the stats are in the books, and the workouts are done...there's nothing left to do now but fire up the grill and wait for the draft.
  21. Oh, AWESOME!....I love the discussion/debate - tell me you love my picks, tell me you hate 'em, tell me you think I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue....whatever. BCD80, on the picks you mentioned, I'll tell you why I did what I did. You have a good point on the Jays' needing to sign that pick, absolutely, I put Turner there because I think the Mets would take him if the Jays don't. Obviously, Toronto will take signability into account, so of course I could be wrong. On Holmes to the Brewers...I wrote this a few days ago, and then posted it today, had I known what I know now about Holmes' workout in Milwaukee, I would have put him in the Brewers' spot. I think Milwaukee is one of the toughest teams to guess on, because they need pretty much everything in the system, and they're in a position where there will be plenty of bats, and arms, to pick from. On Jackson to Miami....I mean that, I think he's going there. Beede...I don't know much about it, but he's falling. Nola doesn't look like he'll get to Toronto, but Beede probably will. If there is the equivalent of the last guy in the NFL Draft green room, I think it's going to be Beede. If there is a kid who comes as a surprise top ten pick, (I really don't see it, but just for fun)....I'm going with Monte Harrison.
  22. Grant Holmes did indeed throw at MP yesterday....only one hitter made contact against him. I'm going to go ahead and assume the scouts liked that.
  23. Narwhal, no, I don't have anything linking the Brewers to Pentecost, Nate's right, the Brewers stay as quiet as anyone before the draft. Pentecost would be a great fit, but so would about ten other players, since the Brewers just plain need organizational depth.
  24. Here is my mock draft...http://www.baseballintheblood.com/?p=1126 We've got a good draft discussion going right here...viewtopic.php?f=69&t=30192&start=380 It's just a few days away now!
