  1. Narwhal, you're right. Jacob Gatewood was a projected Top 5 pick at this point last year....but heck, its fun to talk about these guys anyway.
  2. My way too early look things - the Brewers' first pick will come from this list... Chris Betts, Catcher, Wilson HS, CA Ian Happ, 2B/CF, Cincinnati Alonzo Jones, 2B/CF, Columbus HS, GA Mike Nikorak, RHP, Stroudsburg HS (PA) Nick Plummer, LF, Brother Rice HS (MI)
  3. Montgomery is in, and this is a solid move. Ray's been around the game a long time, and he's done solid work, he's worth trying in this role, for sure. When you look at how many players the Brewers have who are entering the final year of their contracts, you can see the obvious need for young talent in the near future. The system has some better athletes in it now, and adding to them is going to be absolutely essential. Welcome, Ray, no pressure now, just draft a handful of Hall of Fame types in the next two years.
  4. Hi 3and2- Given the needs of the team, and the price tag of Estrada, there's no reason for the Brewers not to make this trade. If the Brewers are going with a platoon at first base, Lind is obviously a much better option than Lyle Overbay at this point. I have no problem with a good platoon at one position or another, but I've grown weary of the team trying to band-aid the first base position, so I was hoping for a sexier upgrade than a guy who couldn't hit a 60-year-old if he threw with his left hand. I'm sure that's my issue, more than anything Lind is or isn't. I think I'm just gun shy. After watching a complete offensive collapse, hearing the team say this part-timer has the ability to hit in the middle of the order brought an immediate, "oh no" sensation for me. A good platoon can be a wonderful thing, but first base is a platoon, if Aramis returns, he's going to need some help at third base along the way, given his age, and Scooter may need some help handling lefty pitchers at second base too. This just has a feeling of hoping for too many things to go right.
  5. Ray Montgomery is highly regarded in the baseball community. He has paid his dues and climbed the ladder, including several years with the Brewers - he has been a candidate for the GM spots in AZ and SD. I think this is a good hire, and as others are suggesting, he may be the heir apparent to Doug Melvin.
  6. I'm not a Lind fan, I was hoping for a better option at first base. I don't think the Brewers overpaid in the trade, I'm just not into Lind. If they're going to go with Lind in a platoon at first base, "Hey, why not?", but I'm not thrilled.
  7. If you're going to play at the trade deadline, this is exactly the type of deal you make. Parra will help the Brewers, honestly, I don't see how anyone could doubt that. Haniger is definitely a prospect, he's a young man who will have a nice major league career, IF things work out for him, but he's not the kind of prospect that ruins an organization if he reaches his ceiling somewhere else. Arizona got a real prospect, which they should have, and the Brewers got an upgrade for the playoff run, which they should have. To me, both teams did fine, and now we watch and see who "wins" the trade. The Brewers got exactly what they hoped for in Sabathia, and the Indians, though they got four players, wound up with Michael Brantley. He was a big part of that trade, but he wasn't even, "the guy", that was Matt LaPorta, who didn't pan out. You never know, and we won't for a while, but at this point in time, this was a solid move by both GMs.
  8. I like the addition of Parra, that's a good outfielder, and certainly an upgrade.
  9. "There's nothing to see here, folks, move along..." No conspiracy, it's a lottery system, St L just wound up with that pick, they could just as easily have gotten no pick at all. I wrote this in 2012, before the first one of these... The ten smallest-market teams will be in the lottery, and the ten lowest-revenue teams will be there too. There is plenty of crossover on the two lists, and a team can only be counted once, so this year, there will be 13 teams in the lottery. All you have to be is small market or small money, this has nothing to do with how a team did the year before, etc.
  10. I just posted on this in the Major League Forum, the Brewers got the 4th pick, after round one.
  11. The Competitive Balance Lottery was held by MLB today, I don't have the full results yet, but I do know the Brewers were awarded the 4th Competitive Balance Pick, following round one, in next year's draft. This is good for the obvious reason - it gives the team an extra high pick to grab a player with, but it also increases the amount of money the Brewers will be allotted to sign picks with next year. That came into play big this year, when the Brewers had three of the top 50 overall picks - they were essentially able to grab three first-round talents, because "signability" was not a concern.
  12. Josh, what's the latest on Jeremy Jeffress?
  13. Watch this, Wang will stay on the DL until at least close the roster expansion on September 1, then he becomes, "the player to be named" in the trade that gets the Brewers a piece for the stretch run, once the season is over.
  14. The kids are at the ballpark every day at 6 AM, they do a full workout, then play a game, which begins at noon. They're all back in their hotel rooms by late afternoon, where many of them take a long nap. The players have no money, and the town they're in doesn't offer much night life, even if they did. Obviously, the young men are tested physically, but I think the mental/emotional grind is the real test they face at this level.
  15. Josh, thanks for calling today, and thank you for writing the BP article on Tyler. I can only imagine what it's like at the players' hotel at the lowest levels - Domincans, high school kids, college guys, all thrown together in their first experience with pro ball. That has to be a zoo. Let us know if you get the new client you mentioned to me today. Folks, keep an eye on Brandon Diaz, there's no way that young man should have lasted until the 8th round last year. He'll be in Appleton next year, and I have a feeling he'll quickly become a favorite here on the site.
  16. Mass, Josh called here today after that article posted, and we had a long talk about a list of baseball topics. Tyler's doing great, the Mets have him on an innings limit, so he's not getting as much work as he had expected this season, but it's strictly because the Mets view him as a real prospect, so they're being careful with him. Tyler pitched to six hitters today - 5 Ks. This level of baseball is tough stuff, the kids are living on next to nothing, while the get acclimated to pro ball, a long ways from home. This whole thing has truly been an education.
  17. I've known Tyler since he was two, and I know his agent as well, who is BF.netter, "Agent39." Life at the bottom of the pile is anything but glamorous... http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=24118
  18. I'm sorry to hear it, I don't buy the, "bad karma for posting that" routine, but I do prefer to see the best players playing at the highest level. Best to Molina on his rehab - Brewers fans have been through this a million times.
  19. Swartz will not sign, he's been firm on that since right after the draft.
  20. The first batter Tyler faced as a pro...took him deep to lead off an inning. He followed that with a pop out, a ground out and a K.
  21. I heard he has a broken leg and a disease.
  22. Josh, I think you're right, Brandon Diaz is better than people think.
  23. I read today that St L is among the teams that have been watching David Price, I wondered why they would bother chasing an arm...now we know.
  24. I wouldn't expect more than 2-3 more signings at this point. From what I've heard, Onyshko, Pelham, and White are all, "maybes", I have heard nothing at all on any of the other unmarked picks in this thread... viewtopic.php?f=69&t=31416
