  1. Wow, Chez Panisse, that's some lunch; you owe K-Rod.
  2. I think it was Socalbrewfan or GregMag who siad everytime the Cardinals feel pain somewhere in the world a child is cured of cancer. It's always a good day to check the Cards score.
  3. In July 2008 the Brewers swept a 4 game series at Busch. Braun hit a 2R HR in the 9th to win the last one 4-3 and Hall hit a 2 out solo HR w 2 out in the 9th to win the 2d one 4-3 after the Brewers were down 3-0 into the 7th. Back in April the Brewers fell behind 2-0 and 3-0 at Busch and came back and won in extra innings 2 straight nights. I think the Cards are in the Brewers' heads thing is overstated.
  4. Duke hasn't been able to close out 2 straight games because he couldn't throw a strike in situations where a walk was worse than a home run. Here he goes 3-0 on Holliday and then grooves the 3-1 then grooves the 1st pitch to the next guy. He (RR) did the same thing before the break when he kept going to Smith who was in a bad patch (including the Phillies game where he pulled Garza who was throwing a shutout with 1 out left to get in the 8th so that Smith could give up 7 runs).
  5. The Brewers were 60-49 at the end of July in both 2008 and 2011. In 2008 they went 20-7 in August and in 2011 they went 21-7. Only 27 games this year in August so I'm going with 20-7.
  6. No such luck. It's asking a lot of the Pads to sweep anybody. We can still thank them for services rendered. After Venable made it 12-1 and Maness then gave up a single he hit Cabrera on the knee. Cabrera was not happy. The Pads announcers also noted that Methany was 2 for 16 this year on challenges before he won one last night.
  7. The Card loss does get the Brewers to 53. Both PIT and STL can win 112 at most so 53 Brewer wins with the 60 already clinches.
  8. With the Pirates up 5-4 in the 6th. They don't score again and lose 7-5: Chris Stewart walks. Double play, shortstop Brandon Crawford to pitcher Jean Machi to third baseman Pablo Sandoval to pitcher Jean Machi to shortstop Brandon Crawford. Gaby Sanchez out at home. Travis Snider out at 3rd. Gameday actually has this wrong: the catcher threw to Machi after the walk to start it. It looks like Snyder thought there was a guy on 1st and that the walk moved him to 3d.
  9. Ooops the one time I'm in Madison and blacked out. The game will probably be over before I get to SLC. We were at Miller Park for the first time in 3 years on Thursday for a very pleasant stress-free game.
  10. The comment to 7.08 addresses intentional v unintentional interference. If the interference is deemed intentional both runners are out. If it were deemed unintentional Span would have been called safe since he'd reached second. Once they call Span out they have to call Rendon out. Plus Rendon was out anyway so how can he be put in a better position based on the interference by his teammate. Plus the rules generally make sense. As the Nat announcers commented how can the guy who was safe be called out and the guy who was out be called safe. How can you possibly not know that has to be wrong. Calling Span safe and Rendon out would have been arguable although I think wrong. Calling both out was I think the right call. Doing what they did can't possibly be defended and was just bizarre. There should be a clarification at the least.
  11. Also: 7.08 Any runner is out when— * * * (b) He intentionally interferes with a thrown ball; or hinders a fielder attempting to make a play on a batted ball; Rule 7.08(b) Comment: A runner who is adjudged to have hindered a fielder who is attempting to make a play on a batted ball is out whether it was intentional or not. If, however, the runner has contact with a legally occupied base when he hinders the fielder, he shall not be called out unless, in the umpire’s judgment, such hindrance, whether it occurs on fair or foul territory, is intentional. If the umpire declares the hindrance intentional, the following penalty shall apply: With less than two out, the umpire shall declare both the runner and batter out. With two out, the umpire shall declare the batter out. So it is in the rule book multiple times and it seems under any reading of any of them Rendon has to be called out if Span is.
  12. INTERFERENCE (a) Offensive interference is an act by the team at bat which interferes with, obstructs, impedes, hinders or confuses any fielder attempting to make a play. If the umpire declares the batter, batter-runner, or a runner out for interference, all other runners shall return to the last base that was in the judgment of the umpire, legally touched at the time of the interference, unless otherwise provided by these rules. According to Ueck the throw beat Rendon anyway. Even if it didn't, how could he have reached first at the time of the interference, unless the interference happened well after the throw, and in that case how is it interference? It has to be a blown call.
  13. 2 games in a row Ueck doesn't call his inning and it doesn't go well. Seems like Duke should be used more.
  14. Ueck skipped the top of the 8th. He must have known something.
  15. That would have been a big win. It's not a big loss. 4 games at home against a bad club coming up and then 3 at home v the Cards. The Brewers have split 3 games with the Cards so they haven't really been owned this year. They're still in better shape than the other guys.
  16. Dickerson leaves w an injury. "I think he just didn't want a piece of Wang.".
  17. I'm getting a new appreciation for the Human Element. No one would have given that a second thought before replay. He beat the throw. The Rox didn't make the play. Why should they get rewarded for what is at best a fluke on the slide? It's not like it was clear enought to overturn anyway.
  18. I'm not sure what the point of limiting challenges to 1 is if managers get unlimited calls anyway.
