  1. I'll go with the one to McCutcheon. It's like picking your favorite child.
  2. If it were a player initiated thing instead of a coach initiated thing the players might have been treated harsher.
  3. I started off by saying I agreed with all of what you said so I'll go with we mostly agree as well. You were saying maybe 25% on Gard and I was saying maybe 3% but same idea. Gard should have let it go until the presser when as you note he was better able to control himself. I'm sure he'd handle it differently if he had to do it again. And again, none of this justifies what Howard did.
  4. Howard wanted to make his comment and keep going and Gard got in his way, put his hands on him and prevented him from doing that, short of Howard pushing him out of the way. You don't have to accept Howard's BS that he felt threatened. That's physically detaining him. It doesn't matter who's taller. Just say yeah whatever [loser] or OK cool you mad or whatever and deal with it at the presser. Don't block his way and start yelling at him. What does he think, Howard's going to say now that you're explaining it all to me in this calm and rational setting I feel quite the fool? He's not trying to get Howard to understand he's just venting and fighting. Howard is going to get a richly deserved suspension for at least the rest of the year, and it might be career-ending. He was dumb to even be complaining about the TO to start with. But Gard screwed up too, and I think more than just a bit. I'll think less of him if he doesn't acknowledge that at some point.
  5. This is not true. Howard didn't even get in line to shake hands initially - he waited, and the announcers saw that and commented on that. Then when Howard approached Gard, and Howard dropped his mask and said, "I'll remember that ****[/url]", and you can see on the video Howard dropping his mask as he approaches Gard. That's when Gard reacted and stopped him, according to Gard to try to explain why he did what he did. Gard didn't stop Howard because he passed him or disrespected him - Howard started it by swearing at Gard first. Proof: Thanks, I hadn't seen that when I posted earlier. Gard's behavior looks even worse to me than what was on TV; he reacted to the comment by getting in front of Howard, physically detaining him, and shouting angrily at him (can't tell if that's the f word there or not). Whether the initial trigger was a comment or just walking by (which would have non-verbally communicated the same thing), Gard significantly escalated things instead of de-escalating them. He stays in Howard's face even after Howard says get your hands off me until he's pulled away. We'll see how this sorts out but I'll think a lot less of him if he doesn't acknowledge that he could have handled this better. And he's got a history; it previously took a Come to Jesus intervention by his players before he admitted he had some issues as a coach. You just won the game, why do you have to be so angry? I have this problem too so I kind of know from it. BTW no one is suggesting that Howard didn't behave a lot worse, that's the 97/3.
  6. I agree with all of this. Gard was pissed that Howard passed him by, felt disrespected or whatever, so he physically detained him while making it clear he was really pissed (he looked angrier than Howard at the outset). None of it happens if he just lets it go, or at a mininum de-escalates instead of triggering/escalating it. At a minimum he should apologize and realize he could have done better, anything more I don't know. Howard's problems of course are way way more severe.
  7. ESPN has the Badgers with the easiest schedule in the Big 10 going forward. Ohio State 2d easiest.
  8. I think the playoff has proven that the old way probably wasn't all that broken. Yeah it lead to some seasons where there was some controversy, but this isn't all that better (if at all) This is dumb and unnecessary. I think it was worth it for 2014 alone. It would have been Alabama and Florida State in a deja vu yawner, instead they both got blown out in the semis. I think every year Florida State made it under the BCS system they would have lost in a semi. It was a crime the Oregon teams with Joey Harrington never got in. I don't think it's unnecessary to prove on the field you should be there.
  9. You can add UW women's hockey.
  10. I keep thinking what's it like to be in Minnesota or Iowa or Illinois or Michigan or Indiana and think why does Wisconsin get all the good stuff.
  11. Nice contingent of Badger fans at McCamish tonight; they took over after Davison's 9pt run. Some trouble w FTs and missed a couple chances to put it away earlier but a good road win.
  12. Representating from Truist -.a handful of Brewer fans are here -we're a few sections down from Hank Aaron terrace.
  13. I was at the 1996 game where the Dodgers and Padres were tied after 161 games, winner wins the NL West, loser gets the WC. The Cards as the #1 seed were perceived to be better than than #1 seed Atlanta so if anything both teams were thinking they'd be happier with the L. Can't have that. The Dodgers pulled Martinez after 1 inning, the Pads started their #4. Both teams got swept in the NLDSs. Under the old system Game 163 in 2018 would have been next to meaningless.
  14. At Philippe's - guy here from Rib Lake w a Ueck jersey. My son and I will be in Field 4
  15. Anyone else lose the WTMJ feed on mlb.com?
  16. The NL Wild Card game is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 6. Why wouldn't Scherzer be able to go in that one after pitching last night? He's not scheduled to face the Brewers this weekend, unless the Dodgers throw him on Sunday if it a must-win for their division chances. He is making an assumption that Max Scherzer is going to continue not being scary based on a start or two...not that Scherzer won't start the game at all. I wouldn't bet on that. I'm not making the assumption that he won't start but I don't think it's a sure bet he will. His last WC start didn't go so well - he got bailed out in the 8th there too. Anyway, if I'm the Cards I'm feeling a lot better facing him now than I was on the 6th.
  17. Continuing their run of luck, the Cards now know they won't be facing Scary Max Scherzer in the WC. It may not be Max and if it is he won't be scary. At least he gave us a heads-up. He did pitch well against them a few weeks ago. You know who would be starting a WC game for sure? Corbin Burnes.
  18. https://defector.com/its-not-what-you-want/ DEFECTOR UP ALL NIGHT It’s Not What You Want 24Comments DAVID ROTH 6:09 PM EDT on Sep 29, 2021 Brewers reliever Devin Williams, seen here pumping his fist after getting an out against the Marlins in April. John Fisher/Getty Images On Sunday, the Milwaukee Brewers clinched the National League Central and celebrated their victory, as is the custom, by getting loaded in the clubhouse. Champagne was sprayed and beer was drunk. It was the sort of party at which at least some people were wearing stirrup socks and a majority wore protective eyewear, which is to say the sort of party at which something stupid was more or less guaranteed to happen. These are the scenarios in which soused front office buttheads crow about acquiring creeps and people deliberately mess up Tim McCarver’s meticulously crafted hair. It is a baseball party, and as such the only rule is that it’s going to be dumb as hell. In that sense, it is not entirely relief ace Devin Williams’s fault that he got frustrated at his own team’s victory celebration, punched a damn wall with his pitching hand, and broke his hand in the process. In this reading, something that dumb or dumber was just going to happen, and while it is unfortunate that the Brewers’ bullpen is now to be without one of its most effective contributors, this all transpired mostly because it was just Williams’s turn to become part of his sport’s storied heritage of party fouls. In another, more accurate sense, though, it is absolutely Devin Williams’s fault that he did that. Thanks for your continued support of Defector. I am now going to attend a Mets/Marlins game, so who the hell am I to judge anyone else’s decisions?
  19. They clinched on the next to last day so I think the last game was meaningless.
  20. Since home field advantage in the World Series is based on best regular season win percentage, there's an outside chance the Brewers catch the Rays and an outside chance the Astros catch the Brewers. The chances anyone else catches the Brewers are slim to none. So it's not over yet!! Nail-biting time!!!
  21. Special team, special night. I was hoping to see the 2d no-hitter ever in person too, but this works.
  22. Fox 9 AM games out here, even better.
  23. Be a goldfish didn't work. It's just "Thursday matinee" today. I don't think the Reds have much to worry about - the Pads might not win another game. Tingler pinch ran and pinch hit for position players in the 10th and then didn't double switch the PR even though that left him with no position players on the bench. The Pads had 3 pitchers bat in extras in walk-off situations, twice with the bases loaded. He also left in the one reliever who gave up runs for another inning, where he gave up 2 more, after pulling the previous 6 after 1 scoreless. I think he could be fired for last night alone, like Yost in 2008 after the Phillies series.
  24. Bill James had a formula for a clinch - games ahead x (games ahead + 1) / games left to play x 4. The Brewers have clinched v the Cards using that as well.
