  1. Wow no references to the game-ending pickoff? Did I miss an entire thread devoted to the Cards' contribution to the worst-played Series in memory? This is fun: http://deadspin.com/cardinals-radio-guy-laughed-at-red-sox-for-holding-kolt-1453631447 Although I wonder why people are surprised that the runner was being held since that also sealed the line against a double that would put the tying run in scoring position.
  2. I thought it was interesting that the Cards went out of their way to make it clear that they saw nooooo problem with the Mickey Mouse ears and that any way Gonzalez wants to celebrate a big HR is just fine with them. Maybe they're looking at their poll numbers and/or maybe they realize that if Gonzalez (who grew up down here and played for the Pads for years and who nobody has ever had anything bad to say about) is mocking you the problem isn't everybody else it's you. The only people who haven't gotten the message are the Worst Damn Sportswriters in America at the LA Times. They did get rid of TJ Simers (who's suing them, of course, because he's the worst) but Plaschke is still there to ladle on the derp.
  3. Maybe the removal of the jerk in Boston and all the good press he got will help derail the must throw the HR ball back on the field meme.
  4. Should have brought Kinzler in for the 9th, let's hope Roenicke figures out to do that for the 10th. He's thrown under 30 pitches over the last 4-5 days so it's not overusing him to bring him in 3 straight days.
  5. So GoGo and Roenicke have apologized even though they have a lot less to apologize for than McCann and Johnson and McCann is still chirping like he's some kind of hero and apparently Johnson hasn't said anything. Yep those Braves really need to be giving classiness lessons to the rest of the world.
  6. I wouldn't. It's one thing if you protect your pitcher when the batter is charging the mound but GoGo wasn't going anywhere near Maholm. I would be amazed if Lucroy did anything like this, which is another reason to like Lucroy.
  7. Exactly. In the real world, if guy A mouths off and guy B blocks his movement while guy C hits him guys B and C are arrested for assault. In the real world, if guy A stares at something he just did and guy B hits him with a baseball thrown 90 miles an hour guy B is charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
  8. You can get the TV and radio calls from both markets here: http://wapc.mlb.com/play/?content_id=30950699 Powell and Sutton go on and on about whether GoGo is on something and I started wondering if they were on something. I'm glad Powell walked it back. And I still don't see how staring and jawing gets you ejected but blocking someone from scoring (in violation of, like, the actual written rules of the game not the hallowed unwritten rules) and initiating a physical confrontation doesn't. So if you stare at a HR and then get plunked the next time up do you get thrown out instead of the P? BBTN had Reynolds saying GoGo was out of line and he liked McCann sticking up for Maholm. Machado said the Braves reacted poorly and 2 wrongs don't make a right. The stat nerd guy I hadn't seen before noted the previous incident 2 weeks ago and asked who made these sanctimonious jerks the guardians of all that is true and holy in baseball? I guess the Braves don't know that's the Cardinals' job.
  9. "Look at the 2007 season, at the end of the year we had 2 relievers who posted what I would consider to be good seasons, Cordero and Shouse." One of the points the Hardball Times post makes is that what Yost did early in 2007 had something to with where the bullpen was later on.
  10. Yes I don't see why you toss Freeman and not the other two and I never did see what Laird did.
  11. Here's something from Hardball Times (ha ha Yost Infection!) about a year before the Baseball Prospectus article that has some examples: http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/yost-infection Over a 55 game stretch that year the Brewers had 13 games (almost 25 percent!) where they had a 3+ run lead at some point and lost the game (5 where the lead was 5 or 6). I don't care what your GM gives you, you can't have a stretch like that and be managing the bullpen competently. A couple months ago the NYT Xword clued a 4 letter answer as Baseball Manager Ned. My brother said it was a trick, should have been Baseball "Manager" Ned.
  12. Spidey yes that's what I meant. On the Brewers radiocast Block called it before Hernandez did ('hey he didn't get out of the way, OK now they're bringing him back'). On the clip from the Braves TV broadcast you can see Lucroy immediately appeal to Hernandez and then one of the Braves' announcers (Powell?) says yes it was the right call. Then after Freddi and the fans start complaining the other guy says that's Angel Hernandez being Angel Hernandez and I have no idea what he means other than he's just being a homer and is ignoring the play and eliciting the prejudice from Hernandez' reputation. Hernandez had to make a call; he made the right one; there weren't any theatrics or showing anybody up; and after Gonzalez went out to try to get thrown out (I think he wanted to fire up his team and the fans, who were dead the whole game until then) he threw him out. As far as I could tell he just did his job in a low-key way. Here's from NBCSports - the first thing you get when you google: "Personally, I wish this got called a bit more often. It’s ridiculous when hitters lean into a pitch to take it off the arm or, worse, an elbow pad. Janish clearly moved his knee into the path of the ball here as a means of getting on first base. That it didn’t work is a credit to Hernandez. Yes, I really just wrote that. I’m going to shower now."
  13. I guess it's tough when you have a fall weeknight game and you've already clinched and there hasn't been much to cheer about but what a weak crowd. The only time they haven't been silent is when Gonzalez play acted outrage after a clearly correct call.
  14. You need tonight to clinch but it looks like you've got it.
  15. Ueck really disgusted on the missed sign on the squeeze. On both ends - if the batter doesn't acknowledge you don't send the runner.
  16. No Ax, Gonzalez, Badenhop = victory
  17. Davis picking right up again tonight. He was the player of the day in the Washington Post this morning.
  18. Block just mentioned the last game I ever saw in County Stadium - Labor Day weekend in 1999. The Cardinals took a 7-0 lead, the Brewers tied it up in the bottom of the 9th and then Wickman gave up 4 runs in the 10th. After that I think he had 20+ scoreless outings at home into 2000.
  19. Roenicke with the quick hook. Kinzler had given up only 6 hits.
  20. Ueck's call a little different (preceded by the TV call): http://wapc.mlb.com/play/?content_id=29781807&c_id=mlb&topic_id=vtp_must_c The second "how about that one folks?" of the year (that I've heard at least).
  21. Heeeeee struck out the side! How do you not love this bullpen?? (:
