  1. "She introduced me to so many things... pasteurized milk, sheets, monotheism, presents on your birthday, preventative medicine."
  2. It should also be noted that DeJesus would mark a bit of a dropoff defensively from Cameron - on a team that already struggles on defense, I'm not sure you want to get rid of maybe your best guy. If Cameron's salary makes a difference in the ability of the club, then you look at other alternatives. Save that, you have a good center fielder under contract for this coming year.
  3. DeJesus is signed cheaply through 2011, which is good for the payroll, but expensive in the acquisition cost. He would be a good guy to get, however IMO not enough of an upgrade from Cameron in the OBP department (and salary savings) to warrant what we'd have to give up to get him. Unless the Royals want to get rid of him for some reason, I don't know why they would be "motivated" to trade him. Mike Cameron isn't a problem on this club, just similar to other players. The rotation, third base and the bullpen need to be addressed before we start tinkering with center fielders.
  4. No, compensation for a Type B free agent is between the first and second round. Quoth the CBA: "For such Type A Players, compensation to the Player's former Club shall be an amateur draft choice ("Regular Draft Choice") of the signing Club and an added amateur draft choice ("Special Draft Choice") in the Major League Rule 4 Draft. For such Type B Players, compensation to the Player's former Club shall be a Special Draft Choice in the Major League Rule 4 Draft. ... The Special Draft Choices described in subparagraph © above shall be additional draft choices to be made immediately following the first complete round of the draft and preceding commencement of the second round. Clubs that have lose a Type A Player shall receive the first selections, in the reverse order of their won-lost percentage in the preceding season. Following these selections, Clubs that have lost a Type B Player shall receive selections, in reverse order of their won-lost percentage in the preceding season. Ties shall be broken by lot." The "Rule 4 Draft" is just the official name of the June amateur draft.
  5. My reaction to this was: "I've never heard of this guy, must have played a long time... oh, Christ. I get it."
  6. I might be wrong about this, but I believe all Type B losses are compensated in the supplemental round after the first round. I believe they did away with the supplemental rounds after the second and third rounds. So, if the Yankees signed CC, Sheets and Cameron, the Cameron supplemental pick would be after the Sabathia and Sheets supplemental picks, but would still be before the second round. All in all, the Brewers would get the Yankees' first round pick (but not the one they gained for not signing their first round pick last year), three picks in the supplemental round, and the Yankees' second round pick.* *This is assuming the Yankees would only sign those three Type A/B free agents.
  7. Assuming Cameron is a Type B player, we would get a compensation pick between the first and second round if: -The Brewers decline Cameron's option, they offer him arbitration, he declines arbitration, he signs elsewhere. -The Brewers decline Cameron's option, he signs elsewhere before 12/1.
  8. Clancy, neither Ryan Braun nor Corey Hart (I'm not even sure which one you're alluding to) will ever play another inning of third base in their pro careers, unless the game is out of hand or we hire LaRussa.
  9. Cameron must have good value on the trade market. Even if you're sure one of those left-handed, plus defense, .360-.380 OBP center fielders will fall in to your lap at some point this offseason, don't you pick up Cameron's option anyway? I'm sure at the very least the Yankees would take him off our hands for a reliever and a prospect.
  10. Right now, somewhere in the United States, Doug Melvin is interviewing Bob Brenly. Icky.
  11. Not Brewers related, but 2002 4th overall pick Adam Loewen was released by Baltimore. They're trying to sign him to a minor league deal, though they have more than expected competition for his services. He was converted into an outfielder late in the year after copious elbow problems derailed his pitching career. He was a heck of a hitter in high school and is still relatively young at 24. I'm not sure if the Brewers are interested, but I sure hope they are.
  12. Well, 20 of their first 27 draft picks in the '08 draft were pitchers. I'm not sure if it would be a good idea to look a lot more closely than that. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I'm sure there will be some change in draft philosophy. If it's not the same guy guiding the ship there are bound to be some differences in strategy and focus. What those changes will be won't really be answered until next June at the earliest. As for Jack Z. taking guys with, I would not be surprised in the slightest to see one of Blengino/Flanagan going to Seattle (perhaps whichever one doesn't get the Scouting Director job here), as well as a crosschecker and a scout or two. The damage won't be insurmountable. Edit: I just remembered what year it was.
  13. Just looking at his career stats, it looks to me like he would have an option left. He's also not arby eligible yet. While I don't see them having a use for Gwynn, the Twins might be interested in a Nelson for Bonser swap. That's an interesting idea, JB12.
  14. "Sanspo is reporting that the Hanshin Tigers are planning to aggressively pursue Texas Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz this offseason, to replace the disappointing Lew Ford." Apparently a 1.030 OPS over 115 AB means you get to replace Lew Ford in Japan. Probably a good move for Cruz - I imagine he would be dominant in Japan. Linky.
  15. I would not trade Hardy for Blackburn and Span... Blackburn has good, not great, stuff, but he'll be 27 next year and has yet to pitch 200 innings in a season. Span had a really good season, but has he turned the corner, or was it just a good season? Betting on the corner means you're willing to overlook 4.5 years of mediocrity for 1 year of productivity. I wouldn't trade Hardy for that. I'd trade Hardy for Slowey+, and trade Hardy, Hall and Iribarren for Slowey and Cuddyer, but the Twins wouldn't do either. This is a case of teams matching up, but teams valuing different things.
  16. According to this AFL update, the reason Jeffress only went 2/3 of an inning yesterday was because of "shoulder fatigue" - his fastball was in the low 90's, not the upper 90's, so they took him out. A decision will be made on his AFL status in about a week. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised to see him shut down. No sense in pushing things this late in the season. The same article notes that Green's injury isn't that severe (about as mundane as getting hit in the cheek can be, I guess) and he might be back in the next few days.
  17. McCalvy notes that Melvin won't interview replacements for Zduriencik until he decides on a field manager.
  18. When I got into my car last night, I noticed that this was the mileage on my odometer: http://images.yuku.com/image/jpeg/ede35631486e9771d3589a2524f50e9dd03c03b.jpg
  19. Melvin has stated a few times (or just once, and repeated elsewhere) that he's looking at "maybe five" candidates for the manager's role. If he is indeed holding five or four interviews, there is still a name or two that we haven't heard yet. If it really is just Brenly, Randolph of Macha, I'd take Macha, but I have a feeling that it won't turn out to be any of those guys. Melvin is pretty good at doling out misinformation and keeping a lid on his real plans.
  20. Jack Z. had two of his crosscheckers get hired as scouting directors in the past few years - Bobby Heck for the Astros in '07 and Tom Allison for the Dbacks in '06. He's taught his guys well. I'd be surprised if the new scouting director didn't come from within the organization. The assistant scouting director is Tony Blengino - he's been on the fast track up the scouting world recently, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's him. It might well be Tom Flanagan also - he was assistant scouting director from 2000-2005, and is now in charge of administration of the minor league operations and scouting operations.
  21. I believe the Brewers are under contract through this year with Maryvale, maybe 2010.
  22. Right, but with the 40-man roster good until opening day, there's not the crunch there was. I like Bonser a bit - with his stuff, he could become a good late inning guy if he keeps his weight in check. I just don't think the Twins will give up on him right this moment. He might be a piece to a larger deal, but he won't be a deal in and of himself, unless they get blown away. Say, like if the Brewers offered Green.
  23. The Brewers wouldn't trade Haydel for Bonser. Haydel is an athletic freak, and might bust out soon. I don't think the Twins would trade Bonser for Haydel. Bonser is still pre-arby and might bounce back... selling low on pre-arby guys doesn't happen a lot.
  24. To be devil's advocate and take it down to the most simplistic level, the end-all objective of any hitter is to score a run. And since the leadoff hitter nominally has more plate appearances than anyone else in the lineup, it makes some logical sense that the primary goal of the leadoff hitter should be to score... he's the run-scoring opportunity most often available.
  25. In today's game... Lorenzo Cain, still playing LF, went 2-6 with a HR, 2 RBIs and a run scored. OPS is at 1.140 over 18 at bats. Taylor Green, playing 3B, went 1-2 with an RBI, run scored and HBP. After he was hit by the pitch, he was removed for a pinch runner. Let's hope he's ok. Agent39? Taylor's OPS is at 990 after 24 AB. Omar Aguilar pitched an inning and a third allowing a hit, and he struck out a dude. ERA is still at 0.00 after 4.1 IP. Jeremy Jeffress had a forgettable day as he did not make it out of the first inning. In 2/3 of an inning, he allowed 6 runs, all earned, on 3 hits (including a HR), 2 walks and a HBP. Jeremy's ERA stands at 12.86 after 7 innings of work. Link to box score.
