  1. On my new favorite online music site, rateyourmusic.com, there's a genre called "Traditional Doom Metal" - I am now kind of curious to hear the differences between traditional doom metal and similar genres such as funeral doom metal, death doom metal, brutal death metal, deathgrind, cybergrind and powerviolence. Also, what makes traditional doom metal, traditional?
  2. This post is nearly identical to your previous five posts in this thread. Six posts back, you didn't include any managerial preferences, you just took a shot at Melvin. We get your drift. If you don't have any new information to add, please do not consider it your mission objective to rehash the same point over and over and over again. It got old quite sometime ago.
  3. 25-50' of speaker wire and RCA cable shouldn't be anything to worry about as long as the sheathing is intact on both. That's not really a very long distance at all under normal circumstances... from my experience, interference problems usually only start over 100-200'+ runs of wire, and usually then only because the wire sheathing had become worn or connections were faulty/exposed to too much air and dust. Temperature shouldn't be a big issue either. Unless you've run in to interference problems in the past in that area of your house, I wouldn't worry about it too much. I would make sure you're using at least 14 gauge speaker wire, and I might even go up to 12 if I were doing it. Don't buy Monster Cable, though. Their markup is ridiculous.
  4. Are there strips of metal attached to the two sets of posts on the back of the center channel? I assume the speaker is set up for biwiring, which is stupid and a waste of time and speaker cable. If you want to know the ins and outs of biwiring and why it is stupid, google biwiring. You just need to hook up the speaker cable to one set of the posts (red/black) on the back of the center channel and to the designated center channel posts on the back of the receiver. It shouldn't matter which set you use on the center channel, as long as you use a set of red and black, and not both reds or blacks.
  5. Yes... and Skaalen is gone. I think that if you're running a high-risk, high-reward business like baseball and you have a pretty influential guy (say, a pitching coach) maybe maintaining the status quo for awhile, that's alright, but don't you want to try to get better? Assuming you make a good hire, you're going to stay the same at worst. Maddux is adequate, but he's not done anything to keep his job here under a new manager.
  6. I'd like to see this comment backed up. People keep harping on it, but I can't figure out why. Has he been terrible? No, but to me he's not the miracle worker people make him out to be. He's taught the cutter to a few people? The Brewers didn't have a low-paid pitching staff this year. The Brewers have had guys with a good year or two, but who has really turned their career around under his watch?
  7. His mustache. I also hope it's Bobby Valentine or Davey Johnson. Maybe Mike Hargrove. Anyone else I'm ambivalent about at best, and I'd be pissed if it were Brenly or Macha. Maddux should be canned also, IMO.
  8. Cain (LF) and Green batting 1-2 in the order for the Javelinas tonight. Salome still has only appeared once. FWIW, Palmisano is now on the Javelinas' roster.
  9. It's not Sveum. Melvin extended 3 years, Sveum and Skaalen out. No new news on the new manager.
  10. I'll echo that the most beneficial scenario for the Brewers might be trading Prince to a team like the Rays, sending Cain to San Diego, and getting Peavy whilst the Rays send pitching to the Padres. Giving up Prince is obviously huge, but I'm not sure how much more you can gut the farm system. San Diego wouldn't have any interest in Prince for Peavy, so a third team would have to be involved. And as those types of deals are not very common, the chances of it happening are only slightly larger than the Brewers' chances of still winning the World Series this year.
  11. From what little information is out there, the highest paid GMs seem to make around $2 million a year, though more were closer to around $1 million. Assuming Melvin makes about $1 million, would Jack Z. maybe make half his salary? 3/4? 1/4? Somewhere in there would be my best guess. How that relates to other scouting directors, I couldn't be certain. Zduriencik probably makes above median given his status, and would almost definitely get a sizable raise if he were to become a GM.
  12. No... Nichols' background is in development and operations, not really scouting. If the Brewers promoted from within, I'd think it would likely either be Assistant Scouting Director Tony Blengino, or a national crosschecker, such as Jeff Cornell or Tom McNamara.
  13. Link. This could be a huge blow for the Brewers. Just like the last few jobs he's been up for, I hope we dodge another bullet. Of course he's sure deserving of a shot, IMO. Edit: For what it's worth, he's between 10 and 18 years older than the other three candidates. All four candidates would be first-time GMs, so he's not going against anyone with more experience.
  14. As all pitchers are one arm motion away from making their final major league pitch, I believe it is both foolhardy to give up too much for them, and to undervalue their worth. If San Diego were an American League team, this would be a tailor-made deal to swap Fielder+ for Peavy. As it is, we'd have to go through an AL team to do the deal, and those deals rarely get done. However, Peavy is one of the best few pitchers in the game. If the Brewers aren't comfortable with a Gallardo/Parra front end of the rotation (and I'm not so sure they shouldn't be comfortable with that for the moment), and they are comfortable giving up $125 million to offer to Sabathia, they have to ask themselves if giving up Fielder, Hart, Anundsen and Salome wouldn't be a better option for less long-term risk in a Sabathia equal, Peavy. A deal like that would clear salary, not gut the minor league system, and give the team some room to go after Randy Wynn or something to replace Hart. Or, Attanasio could mortgage Miller Park, sign CC and trade for Peavy. A Peavy/CC/Gallardo/Parra/Bush rotation would be absurd. But that's a pipe dream.
  15. The Javelinas lost 3-2 tonight, but the Brewers' contingent did well by themselves. Taylor Green played third, had a double and a walk in three plate appearances, and raisied his average to .400. Lo Cain got into a game for the first time, played left field, and went 1-3 with a run scored, a stolen base, and a strike out. David Welch pitched a scoreless 8th, striking out two of the three batters he faced. Link to the box score.
  16. It is not necessary to repeat this ad nauseum. Everyone on the minor league forum has now read this, or a version of this, about a dozen times. And it is Lucroy, no capital "C".
  17. It's already been mentioned, but Gwynn's mediocre AAA .328 OBP translates into something even worse at the MLB level. And while you're going to pay Cameron considerably more than Gwynn, that's the price the Brewers (might) have to pay to not have a black hole in the lineup wherever Gwynn is. TGJ also regressed offensively in basically his second full season in AAA. In 2006, he had a .300/.360/.396 line over 447 ABs. In 2008, he had a .275/.328/.331 over 375 AB. The problem with Gwynn is that his OBP (and really his OPS) is batting average dependant. He has no power to speak of, so major league pitchers have no reason to throw him balls. Even if you think he'll hit .280 in the bigs, it'll be a pretty empty .280. I would also take Cameron on the basepaths every time over Gwynn. Gwynn's speed has been overstated quite a bit IMO. He's faster than average, but not much faster, and I would give the baserunning edge to Cameron without a doubt. Finally, as for Cameron regressing, he had a better OPS+ than last year, and better than his career average. He's not a world beater, but he did have the 7th best OPS among CF in baseball last year.
  18. The Cat in the Hat Comes Back is better than The Cat in the Hat.
  19. If Apple doesn't provide an iPod with increased storage over last year's 160 GB model soon, I'm gonna throw a fit. The new '08 iPod Classic is 120 GB? What? I hear the iPod Photo is pretty sweet, jerks.
  20. The Brewers simply have no business paying $28 mil per year for anyone, up to and including Albert Pujols. If Attanasio is seriously considering this, he's beginning to seriously worry me. That's a helluva gamble. Then again, my net worth isn't in the hundreds of millions.
  21. Jeffress won't be moved to closer until he shows himself too limited to be a starting pitcher, or gets injured a lot. I hope neither of those things happen. 200 innings is so much more important than 60-80 innings at the end of the game.
  22. If I trade Prince Fielder to the Orioles, I would want Aubrey Huff as part of the deal. He had a gigantic 2008, but like Roberts and Mora, he only has a year left on his contract. He makes $8 mil, but if they'd take Bill Hall, it would even things out. The flip side to any deal that takes on salary is those are dollars we won't be able to throw at CC or another pitcher. If they do take on money in a trade before CC signs anywhere, you have to think that means they're out of that race.
  23. Unless they bring him back as a minor league free agent, the least they can pay him is 80% of his 2008 salary, which would be $8 million. Thus, they will not offer him arby. (At least I sure hope they won't.) He won't be back.
