Brewers' Pitching- Why is it so bad?
And That replied to FVBrewerFan's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
It's not the routine stuff/range for me so much, it's the mental lapses, especially at inopportune times. The Brewers do have the third most errors in basebal, FWIW. -

1B Garrett Cooper hits the Colorado Springs 7-day DL. No word on the injury. You wouldn't think this is a move to clear roster space. C Rene Garcia, last seen being taken off the field in a Brewers Miller Park spring training game, is ready to go and is now active on the Sky Sox roster. LHP Andrew Barbosa has been activated from the DL as well for the Sky Sox. He replaces Brent Suter, just recalled to Milwaukee. The Sky Sox and Shuckers now both have three catchers on their active rosters. Curious. -

Brewers' Pitching- Why is it so bad?
And That replied to FVBrewerFan's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I think the biggest problem with the Brewers' pitching staff is the same thing it was last season: the defense. It's better than it was, but still often headache inducing, especially on the right side of the diamond. And not just errors - the corner outfielding has generally been pretty brutal in terms of getting/throwing balls. Their team BABIP is second-worst in baseball, at .321, which is just .001 better than the worst team. That's about 30 points of average higher than median. That's significant. But I don't think the pitching staff has been that bad. Mediocre might be how I'd describe them. The most basic way to compare pitching staffs is ERA. The MLB average ERA is 4.13, the Brewers' team ERA is 4.25. That's 19th overall. Team FIP and xFIP is nearly identical. BPro has them 23rd in team PWARP, B-R has them 19th in their version of WAR, and Fangraphs has them at 12th. They need to get better at not walking people, but they're also doing decently at not giving up home runs and stranding the people who do get on base. -
Rattlers Complete the Sweep of the Captains Wisconsin builds early lead and holds on for 5-4 win By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Photo: Wisconsin Timber Rattlers) Wisconsin Boxscore Demi Orimoloye and Mario Feliciano each with two hits, Orimoloye with the lone extra base hit. Demi also nabbed his ninth and tenth bases of the year. Feliciano pushed his batting average back over .300, and walked once as well. Braden Webb had another impressive outing, striking out five and walking none in 3 two-hit innings. Parker Berberet pitched a clean ninth for his first professional save. There's no reason that Berberet should be in Wisconsin any more than another few weeks. Wisconsin Game Log

How much Brewer baseball do you watch?
And That replied to adambr2's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I usually watch 2-3 hours per day, though minor league stuff for the most part. My six year old and I have fun flipping between the minor league games. He's become a pretty huge Rattlers and Mudcats fan. I saw him running around pretending to be Jake Gatewood the other day. Proud papa. -
Absolutely agreed on Archer. With his arm angle and movement, he's fun to watch and when he's on, really hard for RHB to pick up. Cooper I had at #19 on my preseason top 25 ballot, half expecting to look like an idiot, but he seems to have unlocked some of that plus raw power. And the even better news is that he's hitting with more power without having altered his approach. Doubles power is still opposite field, and home runs aren't all pulled. And he has a much higher OPS on the road, so it's a legit 900+ OPS, unlike the other guys on the team.

Sorry, missed this on Thursday. Recently signed Michael Choice put on Biloxi's 7-day DL, Gabriel Noriega activated from Colorado Springs' DL and transferred to Biloxi's active roster. With the trade of Noonan and the transfer of Noriega, the Sky Sox all of the sudden have an infielder shortage in the wake of the Sogard callup. They'll need to make a move to get back to a full 25 man roster/have 12 position players. -
Rattlers Rally from 5-0 Down to Win 7-5 at Lake County Wisconsin caps comeback victory with three-run ninth inning By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Photo: Wisconsin Timber Rattlers) Wisconsin Boxscore The Rattlers pull back to .500 and third place once again, with a slow-burning come from behind win against the Lake County Captains. Tom Jankins gave up 5 runs before recording the second out in a tough first inning, but those five runs were all he, Miguel Sanchez, and Dan Brown allowed over the final 26 outs of the game. Those final 8 2/3 innings included no walks, 12 strike outs, and just four singles. After scoring six runs yesterday, the offense did one better in East Lake, Ohio on Friday. The comeback included three runs in the 3rd, one in the 5th, and the final three in the top of the 9th. Mario Feliciano paced the team with three hits, including a double, which bumped his average up to .297. Ryan Aguilar picked up his fifth and sixth hits of the past two games, and Demi Orimoloye picked up two hits as well. Caleb Whalen, just up from the Helena roster, hit a three run homer to get the Rattlers on the board in the third. Everyone in the lineup had at least one hit. Wisconsin Game Log Comeback complete: Wisconsin Top of the 9th Demi Orimoloye strikes out swinging. Mario Feliciano doubles (8) on a line drive to center fielder Conner Capel. Monte Harrison reaches on a throwing error by third baseman Miguel Eladio. Mario Feliciano scores. Monte Harrison to 2nd. Tucker Neuhaus strikes out swinging. Joantgel Segovia singles on a line drive to center fielder Conner Capel. Monte Harrison scores. Joantgel Segovia advances to 2nd, on a throwing error by center fielder Conner Capel. Ryan Aguilar singles on a line drive to center fielder Conner Capel. Joantgel Segovia scores. Ryan Aguilar to 2nd on the throw. Jose Cuas strikes out swinging.

By what criteria is Cordell ready right now? He has 120ish PAs above AA. And a 773 OPS in about 60 road PAs in AAA. Is it because he's 25? What else? Any significant outfield roster pressure is still at least a year out. I'm not opposed to trading Santana or Broxton, or any of the Colorado Springs OFs for that matter, but if Stearns stays true to his word, he's not going to dump any controllable players, either. Edit: And there's actually my answer to the question. If it becomes the case that there are too many outfielders for outfield spots, Stearns will trade whichever one(s) he can get the most value/control back for.

Segovia Drives in Five in Wisconsin Win Timber Rattlers beat Lake County 6-0 to open series By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Photo: Wisconsin Timber Rattlers) EASTLAKE, OH - Joantgel Segovia had a big night in the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6-0 win over the Lake County Captains at Classic Park on Thursday night. The Wisconsin outfielder went 3-for-3 with a double, two stolen bases, his first professional home run, and five RBI to provide the offense. A trio of Timber Rattlers hurlers combined on the eight-hit shutout. Ryan Aguilar started the Wisconsin second inning with a triple, but he was still at third base with two outs. Then, Segovia came through with a single to get Aguilar home for a 1-0 lead. The Rattlers (15-16) added to their lead in the third inning. Mario Feliciano drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on an errant pickoff throw. Tucker Neuhaus drove in Feliciano with a grounder to short. Segovia struck again in the top of the fourth to extend the Wisconsin lead. Lake County starting pitcher Justin Garza allowed a leadoff walk to Ronnie Gideon and a hit-and-run single by Jonathan Oquendo to put runners on the corners with one out. Segovia lifted a high fly ball down the line in left field. The ball was called fair for a three-run home run. Lake County manager Larry Day rushed out to argue with plate umpire Robert Nunez and was ejected before Segovia could complete his jog around the bases. The Rattlers got a final run with two outs in the top of the eighth inning. Gilbert Lara double to extend the inning to Segovia. The hot-hitting Segovia cracked a double to left-center to drive in Lara to become the first Timber Rattler this season to have five RBI in a game. The Captains (13-20) had eight hits in the game, but could not solve any of the three Wisconsin pitchers on the night. Zack Brown, who was making his first appearance since Opening Night on April 6, made the start and struck out three over two scoreless innings before leaving on his pitch count. Jordan Desguin was next on the mound for the Rattlers and he picked up the victory with five scoreless innings. He scattered four hits without a walk or a strikeout. Andrew Vernon closed out the game with two scoreless frames and three strikeouts. Game two of the series is scheduled for Friday night at Classic Park. Thomas Jankins (1-2, 3.82) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Juan Hillman (1-3, 9.41) is set to start for the Captains. Game time is 5:30pm CDT. Betancourt leads Shuckers to fourth straight win in Jacksonville Shuckers stay atop South Division and go for five-game sweep on Friday By Biloxi Shuckers (Photo: Benton Reed) JACKSONVILLE, FL - The Biloxi Shuckers won their fourth straight game Thursday night, defeating the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 5-3 to remain atop the Southern League's South Division. Javier Betancourt homered and went 3-for-4 to lead a 12-hit outburst in Jacksonville. The win improves the Shuckers to 18-16 on the season and gives them a half-game lead in the division pending the results of Pensacola and Mississippi's games this evening. The Shuckers, Blue Wahoos, and Braves entered play today in a three-way tie for first place. Luis Ortiz (W, 2-3) started for the Shuckers, working 5.2 innings and allowing just one run on three hits. The righty struck out just one, but did not allow any hits until the fourth inning. Ortiz traded zeroes with Shrimp starter Chris Mazza (L, 0-2) through four innings until the Shuckers got on the board in the top of the fifth. Javier Betancourt launched his second home run of the season around the left field foul pole to put the Shuckers up 1-0. The Shuckers would add another run in the sixth, when Mauricio Dubon singled, advanced to second on a groundout, alertly stole third on a throw back to the pitcher, and came home on a passed ball. The stolen base, Dubon's 17th, extended his lead on the Southern League and Double-A leaderboards. Ortiz finally allowed a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Nick Ramirez entered to finish the inning and keep the lead intact at 2-1. In the bottom of the eighth inning, reliever Bubba Derby benefitted from a heads-up play by his catcher Jacob Nottingham to turn a popped-up bunt into a double play and thwart a threat. In the top of the ninth, the Shuckers broke the game open with a Clint Coulter home run, Art Charles double, and RBI singles from Dubon and Angel Ortega to stretch the lead to 5-1. After Josh Uhen struggled in the ninth, Matt Ramsey (S, 10) finished the game off with the tying run on second to notch his league-leading 10th save. Dubon, Ortega and DeMuth collected two hits each and DeMuth extended his on-base streak to 19 games. The Shuckers have collected double-digit hits in each game of the series and 47 all-together. Biloxi has won 11 of their last 14 games since April 28. The Shuckers will try for their first series sweep of the season on Friday as they send Aaron Wilkerson to the mound against Omar Bencomo. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm, with the Beau Rivage Pregame Show starting at 5:45 pm on Cruisin' WGCM AM-1240/FM-100.9 and the Shuckers Radio Network. The game will also be available at biloxishuckers.com and TuneIn Radio. Biloxi Boxscore Biloxi Game Log Things got a little too close of for comfort in the bottom of the ninth: Jacksonville Bottom of the 9th Pitching Change: Josh Uhen replaces Bubba Derby, batting 9th, replacing Art Charles Jr. Cal Towey doubles (2) on a ground ball to right fielder Clint Coulter. Thanks I remember at the time he went on DL there was no other comment at the time, and since. Hope it's not one of those cases where we find out 3 months later he got TJ. Speaking of this, Jordan Yamamoto has been activated for the Mudcats. Colton Cross goes on the DL. -
The attrition rate for prospects, even good ones, is pretty high. For instance, I love Brett Phillips and desperately want him to succeed, but realistically he won't have a shot in the big leagues until he gets his swing re-figured out. A player in AAA with a 32% K rate is extremely likely to get exposed in the big leagues. His OPS away from Colorado Springs is 739. Ryan Cordell has a 773 OPS on the road this year. Both he and Phillips could be AAA->MLB->AAA->MLB->AAA guys over the next few years. Both have all of their options left. Neither is a top 100 prospect, or close to it at this point. Lewis Brinson has a 776 OPS on the road this year. He has more raw talent than Phillips or Cordell, but it's not like he is busting down the door right now, either. I'm not trying to pour cold water on these guys - I think they all could have extended success in MLB if things break right, but it is important to realize they may not. All three, Phillips especially, still have plenty to work on in the minor leagues. If the Brewers have three outfielders succeeding in Milwaukee, it's kind of a bird in the hand situation. No one should be traded unless at least commensurate value can be returned. Prospects fail. These things tend to work themselves out.

Link Report for Wednesday 5/10 -- Two Early Games

Late Homer Sinks Wisconsin Fort Wayne salvages final game of series with 3-2 win over Wisconsin By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Photo: Wisconsin Timber Rattlers) Wisconsin Boxscore The Rattlers did manage 10 hits, however they also managed to field a lineup where six of the players ended the game hitting below .200. Monte Harrison is getting hot again, with a single, a double, and his 7th walk in his past 36 ABs. Not sure how much of that is related to Monte's approach, and how much of that is related other teams wanting to pitch to the rest of the lineup instead. Ryan Aguilar had four hits, all singles, though he did get caught stealing to end the eighth. David Burkhalter made his first start since June 7th, 2016. He was fine today, though somewhat oddly he only has one strikeout through eight innings on the year. Nattino Diplan gave up the go-ahead home run in the bottom of the seventh. He's one of the Brewers' more frustrating guys to watch pitch. Wisconsin Game Log Fort Rain puts it away: Fort Wayne Bottom of the 7th Pitching Change: Nattino Diplan replaces Luke Barker. G. K. Young grounds out to first baseman Ryan Aguilar. Webster Rivas singles on a ground ball to center fielder Monte Harrison. Nate Easley strikes out swinging. Rod Boykin homers (3) on a fly ball to left field. Webster Rivas scores. Jack Suwinski grounds out, second baseman Jonathan Oquendo to first baseman Ryan Aguilar.
